I dont know if it was posted already but since Foolish Games was released under The Batman And Robin soundtrack doesn't that mean she has a crack of winning an Oscar for the song? Also if nominated I think all artists must perform on the show so that would mean a televised performance of Jewel >> Technically, yes, it COULD be nominated, but the song would have to be from a good movie. I don't think Batman and Robin did nearly well enough to get an Oscar nomination, especially considering that the movie was just out in the summer for not a long time and that it's already been out on video for quite some time now. so I doubt it would get nominated. Same reason why Seal's "Kiss From A Rose was not nominated from the last Batman flick. My friend got a subscription to this new womens magazine called Jane. The premiere issue, September or October or something, featured an article on the Lilith Fair. Already, by the first paragraph they call Jewel a "whiny coffeehouse wench". I thought that was a little harsh. It got me thinking that when a man, say Bob Dylan, sings songs that are really deep and have stories and morals behind them, then they are hailed as one of the greatest singers to have ever walked on earth. But, when a woman, Jewel, sings about the same thing, she is called whiny or naive. Now I really get butthurt about things like this and I thought that was kind of messed up. The repurcussions of this article were that a letter from a reader was published in the December issue of Jane. In the letter she said that it was a bit harsh to call Jewel a "coffeehouse wench". But then, there was also someone, who I guess doesn't like Jewel, who wrote and said "as soon as she read that line about Jewel, she put her subscription in the mail". Go figure... Now I'm only 16, and I may be a bit naive, but that's just my two cents. Hugs and kisses to you all. Love, Quinn the piggy lovin' angel P.S. Along with the Lilith Fair article, there's a tiny little picture of Jewel. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Jan 1998 18:21:24 -0500 From: twh662@juno.com (T H) Subject: Re: One Stinkin' Grammy Nomination Remember, Jewel was nominated for two awards last year. (1) Best New Artist - Leann Rimes won, and (2) Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "Who Will Save Your Soul" - Toni Braxton won with "Un-break My Heart". But, also remember, she stole the show didn't she? Remember "the dress" when she was a presenter? This year's awards are for recordings released during the Eligibility Year Oct 1, 1996 to Sept 30, 1997. As for this year, of the four general categories Record of the Year, Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best New Artist, she could only have been nominated for Song of the Year (this is a songwriters award). Record of the Year has to be a commercially released single, or track from a CURRENT YEAR's album. Obviously, songs from POY doesn't apply. This also rules out POY for Album of the Year. Of course, Best New Artist no longer applies. A song is eligible for Song Of The Year if it was first released or if it first achieved prominence during the Eligibility Year. Since No Doubt's "Don't Speak" was nominated for Song of the Year, Jewel's YWMFM or "Foolish Games" could have been nominated, but they weren't. I wonder if when the votes were taken, if maybe people split there votes between these two songs, thus neither got enough votes to make the top 5. Of course, there's no reason why both couldn't have been nominated in the same category. It wouldn't be the first time an artist had two nominations in one category. Besides the four general categories, all that's left is the POP category and she's nominated for the only category she qualifies for, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. I believe YWMFM was eligible for this category, but at least she got nominated for "Foolish Games". She's up against some tough competition. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Jan 1998 17:26:46 -0500 From: Andrew Chandler Subject: NJC: Lilith Lilith, in Jewish folklore is the woman who refused to be with Adam because he would not treat her with respect and as an equal. I recently found out that in Christian beliefs, Lilith is the queen of demons and works with Satan to destroy souls. Quite interesting, isn't it? NARAS have always been criticized for being biased and making the Grammies unhip, and because of this, Jewel ends up with one nomination, while Paula Cole, although not very big as Jewel last year, gets seven nominations. Radiohead's "OK Computer" was not a multi-platnium album last year, surprisingly gets nominated for Album of the Year, and the Spice Girls, who we're really big in 1997, get nothing at all. How do artists and songs get nominated? If I'm correct, 9,000 recording label executives, critics, and journalists vote from a big list of artists and songs which are eligible for this year's Grammies. Then the five artists/songs in each category who get's the most votes get nominated. And then those nominations go to the 25 voters at NARAS, where they pick the winner.
