I would be extremely happy if either wins, which is good I guess. Now I have less of a chance of feeling disappointed :-). Also, someone mentioned "Surfacing", Sarah's newest album. I agree, it is DAMN GOOD. It's one of those albums you could set on repeat and listen to over and over and over... BUT, if you like "Surfacing", make sure to get "Fumbling Towards Ectasy", one of her previous albums. In my opinion, it is even better. The more I listen to it, the more it grows on me. The songs send shivers up my spine, and every single song on it (I'm not kidding) is simply amazing! I'm going to get a copy of her "Freedom Sessions" disc, which I hear is like a big remix of FTE, for the most part. I love her remixes. I love everything from Sarah McLachlan :-). So, if any of ya Jewel fans out there haven't yet bought Sarah's albums, please do yourself a favor. Building a Mystery really doesn't represent her music very accurately (which isn't bad, it just really surprised me when I listened to the albums). I don't know what I'd do without them! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Jan 1998 22:32:14 -0500 From: kinaba@completebbs.com Subject: SJC:John Hiatt; My Grammy Opinion ~kristy wrote: KC>Have a Little Faith in Me KC> by John Hiatt If anyone has any personal info on John Hiatt, I'd love to hear it. I read an article on him in Guitar World Acoustic, and he has a new album out. He sounded, primarily, like a song writer, and mentions Bob Dylan (all hail) as a major influence to him. I looked for his CD, but could not find it, so if anyone out there has it (or any of his material), could you let me know how it is? Okay, here's my view of the Grammy's. It seems to me like they love to promote new and upcoming artists, or perhaps artist who they feel have gone unrecognized, which would explain why Jewel was left out. After all, I believe she was nominated in three categories last year, including "Best New Artist". Now Jewel is virtually a household name, so there is no need for the Grammy's further establish Jewel's musical career. I see this as a problem for the lack of long term artists in the business today, but that's a whole other topic. Thanks. Also, POY is a '95 release, so it probably isn't either. So... Don't blow a fuse. We all know if she could have released her new CD, she would have swept the Grammies. :) Chopped Liver (Charlie) watkins@selway.umt.edu Share publicly, flame privately, " 'Cause anyone can start a conflict it's harder yet to disregard it ". ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Jan 1998 02:15:23 -0800 From: Reynolds Family Subject: Re: Grammy Nominees Wasn't Jewel nominated for POY and YWMFM at last years Grammy's? I would assume thats why neither one got nominated this year. POY is so old I don't know how they could justify nominating it for a 1997 or 98 award. Does anyone remember last years nominees? I would also like to publicly thank the person who posted Have a Little Faith in Me to the list. It was about time. I think a few other people had seen enough posts asking for it. Yahoo didn't do good for ya....Jewel was nominated for two Grammies last year....Best New Artist and Best Pop Female Performance for Who Will Save Your Soul....or is the category Best Female Pop Performance?....or Best Female Performance With Her Pop? (for when she sang & yodeled with her dad on VH1 Hard Rock Live ;) Also, I don't know the exact dates/months involved, but the Grammy "year" for the awards for any given year does indeed stretch into the previous year....in other words, the Grammy year as far as eligilbility for *this year's* awards may go from like October-ish 1996 to October-ish 1997....those are very likely NOT the *right* months, but I do know (at least from what I read recently and what my memory banks can muster up) that it can/does include late 1996 releases. (I would guess the cutoff date was AFTER You Were Meant For Me was released in September(?) 1996, else she MAY have picked up a nomination for that this year....i.e. if so, she could have been nominated for YWMFM last year also, in addition to WWSYS.....gosh, that was confusing.....my point is, I am quite sure that the release of YWMFM fell into last years Grammy "year", and not this years) Mike :) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Jan 1998 16:36:50 EST From: Alaska35 Subject: hey everyone hey all you E.D.A.'s well i've been off the list for a while, but i'm back. i do have one question though. I think a lot of kids out here never really get "hooked" into Jewel's music. They just want to go with what everybody else is listening too. Its pretty sad to think that there are a load of potential EDAs right around where I live(in case your wondering Im in Orange County, home of non-folk/pop music galore). But back to the subject...this happens almost frequently whenever Jewel gets a nomination. People scwaking "Jewel deserves more than that" or something along the lines of Jewel deserving more credit. Yes, its a bit unsettling in your stomachs that Jewel is only up for a Grammy. So...shes up for a Grammy, lets move on. Maybe get more of those EDAF things up and running(I have not a clue whats been going on in the EDAF, don't ask me). I think that Jewel has really had a superb 3 almost 4 years in the music industry. Going from a "who's this? Jew-who?" to "I love her music" is a good thing. She has really worked her butt off and she still is in '98 with write the books, being in a movie, and Finally, her second album coming out.
