As Alan mentioned, this webcast is "well worth recording". I unfortunately do not have the equipment necessary to even hear webcasts let alone tape them. That is why I have made a plea (yes a plea) to any & all list members to record this for me. There are 2 other webcasts that I would like as well. The webcast of Jewel at Irving Plaza w/Duncan Sheik. And the Juliana Hatfield Knitting Factory webcast (which was an excellent show by the way). There is a link to that one on her "desperately seeking Juliana" website at- http://www.satchmo.com/juliana/index.html. This would really mean a lot to me and if anyone could do this for me they will DEFINETLY be on my "good guys" list, and I will make it worth it for you. Thanks Guys. Pete ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Jan 1998 19:23:12 EST From: ABershaw Subject: Hi from MrBB/FF3 plans moving along(re-formatted attempt 2) Hi all, Just checking in on a few things. As you know, Jewel's New Years Eve show was pretty miserable. Not the type of place conducive to Jewel's music..... In happier news, we're getting the "Future Folklore Volume 3" distribution plans together. James Judd & his Taping Army will assist the EDAs this time administrating the FF3 Tree. Huge thanks to James for taking the plunge on this monumental volunteer job! We'll be making instructional announcements soon, so everyone can experience the magic of the Java Joe's EDA Thanksgiving gigs. (If you don't know what I'm talking about, the original post about FF3 follows this short message). I've been trying to figure out ways to improve the "tape tree scene" on the Jewel list & one thing that will be very different this time is that the FF3 tape will remain available indefinately. This means as new people sign on, they'll still be able to get the FF3 tape from various dubbing sites. We also plan to simply post when signup is available. No leaf/ branch requests or any of that involved in signing up. If you want the tape, you'll simply contact the administrator, who will assign you to a branch/dubbing site. That easy. :-) Expect those instructions in the next two weeks or so. Finally, Wendy (the soundman & "house personality" at Java Joe's in Ocean Beach) is visiting us here in New England & says hi! Hope everyone is having a wonderful start to 1998! Talk to ya all soon, MrBB Previously sent FF3 Info: Hello all EDAs, This post is going to be long & hopefully an enjoyable read. (I hope this formats OK on various email systems.) I just want to thoroughly update you & share my excitement about the soon to be FREELY distributed "Future Folklore" Volume 3. The master is finished & I LOVE IT! The music is all incredible & the tape flows real nice & captures the atmosphere during the EDAF Thanksgiving gigs pretty well. You'll be happy to know that ALL the artists authorized material for this, so Jewel, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Joy Eden Harrison, Gregory Page, Elizabeth Hummel, Tara MacLean, Lisa Sanders & Mary Dolan are all featured on the tape. Anyone interested in Jewel's music will certainly welcome a perfect recording of the extremely rare unreleased gems "Jessica" & (the rare operatic treat of) "Lasciatemi Morrire". But it's really the other artists that I think will amaze many of you. Jewel came out of an incredibly talented "scene" in San Diego, which is still very much alive & well! Jewel & these other musicians & songwriters (with the exception of Tara) are all intertwined & connected. I hope you take the opportunity to follow the forthcoming instructions & get this FREE tape while it's being treed in excellent quality. Any Jewel fan on this list who doesn't bother to pay attention is truly missing the boat! I hope to have an admistrator in place in the next few weeks. (and have the finished jcards.) Then we'll get this free distribution off the ground. As always, the tape will be available by sending a blank cassette & return postage & mailer to a person who you'll be assigned to, by the administrator. **IMPORTANT!!! PLEASE WAIT UNTIL INSTRUCTIONS ARE POSTED IN MID JANUARY BEFORE EMAILING ME TO REQUEST THIS TAPE!! What follows are my notes about "FF3", including official finished tracklistings, credits, thank you's & technical info, etc. I think it will answer any questions about the tape you may have. Read on & I'll update you on "tree progress" ASAP. *************************************************** "Future Folklore" Volume 3- NOTES FROM MrBB When I put together "Future Folklore" Volumes 1 & 2, I concentrated on fairly complete performances by Steve Poltz, Cindy Lee Berryhill & Elizabeth Hummel (taken from two EDA events that were documented back in April of 97). For Volume 3, I've selected highlights from both evenings at Java Joe's during the EDA Thanksgiving Weekend of 11/28 & 29/97. There's really a great diversity to the music on this compilation. Powerful & emotional songs from Lisa Sanders, Mary Dolan & Tara Maclean. Updated traditional approaches from Elizabeth Hummel on her dulcimer. Joy Eden Harrison swinging & singing the blues. The sentimentally seasoned songwriting of Gregory Page. Jewel belting out Monteverdi accapella for some culture. And finally my personal favorite, Cindy Lee Berryhill & her Garage Orchestra taking us to "Pop Heaven", when not leading us to some other planet altogether! I think you'll find all of the performances to be enjoyable at the least & mind blowing at the most. For those who enjoyed Cindy Lee & Elizabeth on FF1 & 2, this material is very different than those performances. Elizabeth rocks when playing dulcimer! And Cindy Lee......awesome! On the previous tapes you listened to a unique folksinger, but here those songs are strange & beautiful pop-symphonys that are totally infectious! Although diverse, theres a continuity in listening to these artists together. There1s strong friendships between them all & a never ending support of each other that has impressed me from the minute I was taken in by this San Diego scene. It1s similar support & friendships that are developing & spreading around the planet now by the EDAs, I think. Both sides of the tape end with the humor (& looseness) that these events so often inspire. There's a feeling in the room during these performances that I can't describe accurately. I have tried to capture it on the recordings & I think I've succeeded to a certain extent. By suspending very high quality microphones out of the loft over the stage, I was able to blend the "room ambience" into a soundboard direct stereo mix which fed directly into the decks. This enables the listener to enjoy the clear definition of vocals & guitars that a direct soundboard feed provides while still having the ambience & dynamics that only a room recording done with excellent microphones can provide. I mixed these sources direct to digital while it happenned & after analysing it, I felt no post-production or EQing was needed at all. It really sounds that good! I hope you all enjoy the recordings on Future Folklore Volume 3. It was an unforgettable week of good friends, hilarious parties & great music! What else is there, anyway? Future Folklore Volume 3 is dedicated IN LOVING MEMORY OF KENDRICK For "Future Folklore" Volume 3, very special thanks go to: *Neil Sturtevant for his generous help with recording gear in San Diego. *Wendy & Joe at Java Joes for accomodating the EDAs & my "special needs". *The Morales Family for dedication in planning & hosting these events. *John Walker for being our friend & chauffer-extraordinaire. *The EDAs who made these events unforgettable *The musicians for such inspiring performances! *AmyJo for putting up with my continued insanity. *Lenedra & Jewel, Cindy Lee & Paul and Elizabeth All recordings mixed & mastered live direct to 2 track digital by MrBB. All of the artists represented here have authorized the use of their recordings for this non-profit project. Recorded Friday, November 28th & Saturday, November 29th, 1997 at the "EDAF Thanksgiving Concerts", Java Joe's, Ocean Beach, CA. "Future Folklore" Volume 3 SIDE A: "Welcome To Java Joes"-Wendy "Truly Divine"- Lisa Sanders & Mary Dolan "Where Melancholy Goes"-Mary Dolan "Rainbow"- Lisa Sanders & Mary Dolan "Let Her Feel The Rain"- Tara MacLean "Silence- Tara MacLean" "Jessica"- Jewel "Lasciatemi Morirre"-Jewel "Love Lies Broken"-Elizabeth Hummel "Are We Gonna Get Naked"-Elizabeth Hummel "Goodwill Store"-Elizabeth Hummel w/Jewel & G. Page SIDE B: "White Christmas"- Gregory Page "Walking In The Park"- Gregory Page "Great Mystery" - Gregory Page "Where Have You Gone Jimmy Dean?"-Joy Eden Harrison "Angels Watching Over Me" -Joy Eden Harrison "Aquamarine"-Cindy Lee Berryhill & Garage Orchestra "UFO Suite" - Cindy Lee Berryhill & Garage Orchestra "God Bless The Living Room Tour"- Cindy Lee Berryhill ****************************************************** Final note to EDAs: Many of the goals I had with previous volumes of "Future Folklore" have already been realized, including "The Living Room Tour" & the weekend documented here. I hope this series will continue to inspire many more music related events in the future! This will bring back great memories for those who experienced these shows & I hope it helps to share the experience with those unable to attend. A high quality recording of "Jessica" is probably the most common "dream request" from Jewel tape collectors. This one will certainly fill that need real well! Ah.....& finally, Cindy Lee Berryhill & Garage Orchestra. Truly one of the most wonderful things I've ever listened to! Everyone this week was great, but Cindy Lee is from another planet altogether! Fortunately for me, so am I. ;-) MrBB *********************************** New to the Jewel mailing list? But "Big Blue" is a Ferrington. And as for the electric, I do not know what brand or model it is, but I do know, that it can not be a Taylor because Taylors are only acoustic guitars. I don't know about Ferringtons tho. It could be an electric Ferrington. I absolutely love ice skating (not that I can do much more than go straight), so I pay a lot of attention to Ladies Figure Skating, and this particular performance gave me the chills, it was really good. Part of the song was cut out, though, cause after the 1st chorus, it goes straight into "your philosiphies on art...". Oh, well, it was really really good, and she got all 10's except for just one 9.9. I wonder how many people in the Olympics will skate to Jewel? I never imagined there were so many other people out there with the same love of jewel's music. Anyway- to the subject of my mail. I've recently read a few articles with the following facts that I would like a reply to if they are true or not: 1. Jewel is dyslexic. 2. Jewel had a horse named Clearwater, but she had to sell him when she need money for school. : ( 3. That she used to stroll around school barefoot, never wore makeup, and never painted her fingernails. That's it!! Lisa Moeller - Jewel's newest Angel P.S. I know that a lot of people are expecting me to defend her and say she's not, huh? no. I think that most likely she is. From all that i've heard about her, i'd say that the odds that she has turned into a prima donna are quite high. First of all, its kinda expected... she's very famous and probably has got something of an ego... anyone would. But mostly why i think that is related to something she wrote herself. In her poem , Me, she says... "I've been selfish since a child..." Being selfish myself, i understand why she would act this way. :) Love & muffins, Michelle ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Jan 1998 20:47:13 EST From: JewelWN2BE Subject: NJC: CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA = all EDAs IN OR NEAR.... Hello everyone... Just in case you're wondering, maybe you haven't seen me post before. My name is Michelle. I live in Virginia. Quite close to Charlottesville and I was just really curious to see if there are any other EDAs close by. Theres this cool little coffee shop place downtown (unfortunatly no music or anything there...) But you get to sign your name on the walls and whatever. Well, I signed my name and wrote "EDA" and drew a pic of a small angel. And I wondered if anyone who happened to see it would get it. Obviously only people involved with this mailing list would understand... So if any of you Virginian EDAs ever go to "The Jewish Mother" then look for my little EDA picture on the far wall. hehe!! ;o) Anyways, Email me if you want to talk!! My address is : JewelWN2BE@aol.com Hope to hear from fellow EDAs soon!! ~Michelle the angel who loves to jam** ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #4 *************************
