The San Diego gathering is *offically* canceled due to my parents convincing logical reasoning. I could give you all a load of B.S. but Im not, I'll just be straight out. BTW- Jason V. is giving the ok to have a gathering at his house somewhere in the Riverside area. Didn't say when, but he did say this to me: >we'll have to have a compensatory Gathering at my place sometime soon.< Yeah!! =) One more thing he said that I'd like to back up: >I hope we'll find this New Year to be more conducive to Gatherings< So true, so true. Sorry to let you people down that really wanted it to happen Guitar playin Angel who just popped a string *Doe* Alex ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Dec 1997 01:20:11 EST From: Love1612 Subject: Blockbuster awards Hi- I don't know if anyone has posed this before I think someone has, but just In case, Blockbuster Video&Music has a voting place at each one and Jewel Is nominated for Best Album. I don't think it will be too hard for her to win. She's up against The Wallflowers and The Spice Girls. I think You can also go to the Blockbuster website(I'm not sure what the web address is. it's probably Blockbuster.com) I know for sure you can vote at Blockbuster music and video stores though because I did today. Okay I'm done now. Well, I'd like to get other people's opinions on some non- PoY songs, some of the ones I'm most interested in are Boy Needs a Bike Last Dance Rodeo Race Car Driver Grey Matter Angel Needs a Ride Flower God's Gift To Women Love Me Just Leave Me Alone Anyone want to give their two cents? Bradi ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Dec 97 5:58:16 EST From: Jeffrey Kokosinski Subject: boy needs a bike and bruce springsteen I saw many of the posts on boy needs a bike today and figured that I'd throw my two cents in. The fact that she wrote it in the male voice is not ec?sintirely out of whack. Many people write what their influences write or similar to it a least. I write, although I've only been writing for 3 or four months, I would be lying if I said thta Jewel had not influenced my writing. I have a book of about 40 or 50 songs and I can look back and see that I wrote alot of these for the female voice and with a Jewel type song= in mind. I have also written many songs in the Springsteen voice. So I dont think its a man or woman voice thta Jewel was writing in, but a specific artists voice. It reminds me of SIBTW. That style of song reminds me of early Dylan, where he just squeezed insane amounts of words into a line. As far as Springsteen goes, Boy Needs a Bike comes about as close to Nebraska as I've ever heard. Jewel took the essence of the album, different messages from different songs and combined them into one. There's hope for= a better life like in "atlantic city", a hard influence on familial relations like in "highway patrolman" =7Folike Sean said "used cars" pretty much= defines the whole song pretty well. =20 There are a bunch of other simlarities, but you probably don't feel like hearing them. =20 I for one was all to excited when she said that she was influenced by Nebraska. It was like my 2 favorite artists co-writing a song. JEFF ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Dec 1997 00:29:21 -0800 From: park.place@juno.com (Henry S Park) Subject: FTS/setlist Hello. I trashed my hard drive so I could install new hardware. In any case, here are the most notable shows in California: 1/9 - CINDY LEE BERRYHILL @ the Ghengis Cohen Cantina (all ages) 1/9 - LISA SANDERS @ Borders Books, Elk Grove (8pm) 1/11 - LISA SANDERS @ Borders Books, San Francisco (2pm) 1/16 - LISA SANDERS @ Borders Books, Sacramento (8pm) 1/22 - LISA SANDERS w/MARY DOLAN @ the Belly Up Tavern (21+) 1/26 - STEVE POLTZ @ the Whisky A Go Go (all ages) 3/7 - TARA MACLEAN @ UCSD (venue TBD) I'll be attending each of these shows... hope to see some of you there. NEWS: ...Jewel, Elizabeth Hummel, Frank Drennen and ex-Rugburns Gregory Page and Rob "Doc" Driscoll joined the "new" Rugburns on Dec 20th. Steve Poltz and the Castro Brothers (John and James) had the Belly Up Tavern crowd begging for more as they finished their double encore set with their epic "Dick's Automotive." Unfortunately, Lisa Sanders and Mary Dolan didn't play or the show would have been the best show of '97 for me. [I'm not sure if Lisa and Mary played the 'Burns Casbah show on the 27th although I know Gregory and Cindy Lee joined in on the fun.] I don't remember the setlist precisely but there are others who can give that information. This was indeed one to go into the books of legendary performances. I hadn't seen Greg and Doc onstage with Steve since the 91X SunFest '95 (which Jewel performed at as well). And I hadn't seen Greg, Elizabeth, Steve, Rob, Frank, and Jewel together since... well, a long time. Jewel seemed spirited -- bouncing happily to "Lockjaw" and "The Fairies Came" (my personal fav's.) Most of the crowd knew Jewel would be attending/performing since she does just live down the road from the club and this was The Rugburns -- "The Best Bar Band Ever (?)" The show in Las Vegas should be another great time. For all those going to the show, drive safely going to and from the city -- New Year's is one of the most dangerous times to be driving (especially in Las Vegas.) ...Jewel is mentioned numerous times in the year-end Billboard double issue including a feature about her international success entitled "Jewel's Fortune's Abroad" (pg. 86). ...MTV announced that they will discontinue "MTV Unplugged." Reruns will still be occasionally aired. According to some sources, VH1 will take over production (though not confirmed.) I know I'm forgetting something but this should be enough news for the New Year. Well, Will Smith was the star and he also did the soundtrack, which leads me to... Maybe Jewel will do the soundtrack for To Live On. Not just the title song, but maybe a few more songs. And maybe she'll compose some of the music in the movie. And another note. For everyone who has RealPlayer Plus: What does the flashing BP (or PP) mean? Does it mean buffered play? Perfect play? Sean Hooks and others have given great answers to this question, so I won't go there. What impresses me is that the song is very believably done. As a boy who has needed a bike for almost 50 years, I find it truthful and poingent, and probably the best example of how observant of life Jewel is. ps. This is weird timing because I have just "rediscovered" A Boy Needs A Bike and it ist currently my favorite to listen to.
