What a night! It was the yin and yang of Larry's and my musical universe. Jewel and Bob together. Wow! Plus Ringo was there in the audience! Jewel did both of what Larry calls her Dylan songs...SIBTW and LMJLMA...Larry's night was already made, before the show started, when he waved at Jewel from across the room and she waved back. The hall was relatively small (800 capacity) and is standing only. The place was packed with hardcore Dylan fans. We saw Paul and Cindy Lee on line and ran into EDAs who were at the front of the line. Larry had done recon the night before and had determined that the chances of getting a recorder inside were nil due to unbelievable security! Kris', undaunted, hid his Canon Elph in the only place guaranteed not to be touched in the full body frisk. It worked thanks to Jockey shorts (briefs that is)! Once inside, Kris chose the up close center position (great visuals, bad sound) while Larry angeled for the corner rail next to the speakers with a slightly elevated view. Kris, hellbent on obtaining at least one excellent photo of Jewel and Bob together, kept his camera hidden throughout Jewel's entire set, so as not to be detected and forcibly expelled. As Jewel approached the mic, someone yelled, "Like A Rolling Stone." She flipped 'em the bird and shot back, "You can leave and come back later." She attempted to start with "Don't" but couldn't finish it due to sound problems. The staff wasn't very accomodating so she switched guitars and launched into SIBTW. The set list included "Stranger Enter From The East" which she called a "new" song. At one point, when people were requesting songs, Kris yelled out "The Winter Song" which Jewel had performed at Java Joe's over Thanksgiving. Jewel paused and said "Did you say "The Winter Song?" Kris responded "Yeah." and she said "How do you know that one?" Among other songs, Jewel did "Pieces of You" complete with the models award show story, "Last Dance Rodeo", and WWSYS. Near the end, she asked whether people wanted to hear "Foolish Games" or YWMFM. Before anyone answered, Larry called out "Deep Water" and she repeated "Deep Water" and promptly launched into it. The crowd near Larry applauded the choice after hearing the song. In general, the crowd, which at the start may have been there mainly to see Bob, seemed to warm greatly. The crowd around Kris and Larry, who were definately "old Dylan fans" and who knew little of Jewel's work, were very enthusiastic by concert's end. She knocked everyone out with "Chime Bells" and Dylan, at the end of his set, even remarked "That Jewel sure can yodel!" As Dylan was approaching his final encore, he said "Where's Jewel? Get her up here. Did she go home already?" Unfortunately, he wasn't near the mic and kind of muttered it so very few people could hear him. Either Jewel already had left or she was unaware that he said it because she didn't come up. Sometimes it be that way. When it became obvious to Kris that Jewel wasn't coming up, he brought out his camera and took a roll of Dylan during his last two songs. That's it in a nutshell. I thought about replying just to Erik, but then decided this is interesting enough to keep on the list for now. I feel the we do, to a certain level, idolize Jewel, but in a manner different then is usual. While some may indeed relate to Jewel as a quasi-religion icon, I feel that the majority of EDAs look idolize her BECAUSE of her imperfections, or rather, because of her approach to them. >From an early age, we are pressured to push our imprefections inward, not to let anyone know they're there. A good student isn't one who thinks alot, but rather one with good grades. A good worker isn't one who comes up with ideas for improvments, but rather one who sticks to what he's "supposed" to do. A good son abides his parents instructions to the word. A good soldier follows orders. While democracy allows us many freedoms, the beaurocracy that comes with it doesn't like it too much if we exercise those freedoms "too much". So most of us ignore our imperfections, hide them, deny them both to others and to ourselves. We try to become perfect. Jewel doesn't. By accepting her imperfections, by being aware of them, of the reasons behind them, of who she is deep down, she is able to come closer to peace with herself then most people are these days. And she does this not only on the singular basis (Jewel herself) but also on larger ones (in Little Sister, for example, she doesn't just complain about the illnesses of modern society (drugs, people fading into the crowds and not making any real difference), but also singles out some of the sources of these problems ("Every day we starve while we eat white bread and beer instead of a handshake or hug"), and what we have to do to solve them ("We've gotta start feeding our souls" and (ask the) "Questions we must ask ourselves to get any answers")). That is the example that Jewel gives us, and which we mimic. Jewelism, as Erik so nicely put it, isn't about Jewel, but rather about the ideas that Jewel represents. I think the tendency and the desire to idolize or worship Jewel stems from the very fact that Jewel doesn't want to be idolized, nor does she think that she is worthy of such hero worship (I'm basing this opinion on my general impression of Jewel from her work and in no way am I trying to put words in her mouth). That's my attraction to Jewel, she doesn't pretend to be an idealistic icon, and in some way that is what makes her one. I don't particularly care for most rap music, because, regardless what your tastes in music may be you have to admit, it's a lot of self-glamorization. I don't want to spend $16.00 to hear Puff Daddy rap about how rich he is because we're buying his album. I think its sad that we live in a culture where you can make money by singing songs about making it and how great that supposedly makes you. Not that Jewel isn't making a lot of money (estimates say most artists get $2.00 and album they sell, and that makes Jewel worth at least $10 million), but the difference is that Jewel doesn't act like that makes her better than any of us. She just happens to make more money. I don't think it really has anything to do with money, for Jewel, for she is just living her dream, as her motto is "Live your dream, or die." And it is this quality of Jewel's that makes her so wonderful. She is merely a person, no better than you or I, who is trying to live her dream. Perhaps the only difference between Jewel and myself is that she has realized her dream, while I am still trying to realize mine. Jewel therefore becomes a role model for me, for she has already done what I am still trying to do. Jewel does not pretend to be a great person, and that is what makes her great. She does not try to be wonderful, and that's what makes her wonderful. She does not try to cover up her imperfections, nor does she make excuses for them, and that is what makes it easier for us to overlook them. Jewel is not arrogant, and if you are going to make anyone your role model, this quality makes her better suited for the job than many other of her colleagues. I mostly agreed with Erik's letter, it is easy to become offended by the notion that Jewel is a human being, but maybe that is because since Jewel has already owned up to that fact, we become very protective of her. She's only human, she admits it, lets move on and leave her alone. Nothing infuriated me more than reading an review of the LP version of Pieces of You (the one that contains five extra songs) that totally bashed the album for being too simple, too plain. "Who does Jewel think she is, her album isn't that great, half of it was recorded live, where does she get off thinking she's a great music star with such trashy, childish, simplistic music?" That was the message the review gave. It made me mad, not because I love Jewel so much, but that Jewel never said she was a great musician. Jewel herself has said she is embarrassed by Pieces of You for those very reasons. Jewel never said she was a rock star. Jewel never said she was a good song writer. Jewel never said she was great. The article made it sound as though Jewel were trying to be something that she is not, that she was a simple person trying to be great. But they missed the whole point of Jewelism. Jewel is not great. She does not try to be. She is just a human being who wants to express her feelings to us. And her honest humility, more so than her music alone, is what makes her great. In her own words, "I'm sensitive, and I'd like to stay that way." Well, I guess I'm talking too much here, so I'll stop now. Jon, The Killer Angel P.S. The Killer Angel is actually from a Civil War novel. The title is meant to imply that mankind is a combination of good and evil, which, ironically, is what this whole letter is about. Shakespeare said of man, "In action, how like an angel" and a soldiers response, after surveying the destruction at Gettysburg was, "Well, if he's an angel, all right then. But he damn well must be a killer angel." I always loved that line and have used it as a handle ever since, for it keeps me humble, and, somehow, it applies here :) ************************************************************* Jonathan "Jackal" Rodgers "A good brain ain't diddly if jackal@groton.k12.ct.us you don't have the facts." -Ani DiFranco ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Dec 1997 16:10:52 -0500 (EST) From: Albert Sze-Wei Wang Subject: Happy Holidays! This should be really fun, and I know a lot of you are ready to get started. I am, however, right in the middle of a major move (Mississippi to Texas), so I will be computerless for a week or so. But after I get settled down there, I will get the list sent out to y'all as soon as possible. So be working on those songs, and have a great Holiday! Merry Christmas!
