So, I thought it might be a cool idea to collaborate and write some jewel-esque songs. There has to be a bunch of us that have a few unfinished songs/song ideas that we could bounce off of each other and make something out of. Maybe write lyrics to a cool progression someone has come up with, or come up with music that fits lyrics someone has written...I'm sure you guys get the general idea. It could be done with a bunch of people, or even between two people. Just a thought- I hope some of y'all are interested! Oh, and since the poetry thing can take up a lot of space and be kind of lame on the list, we would need to keep it in private e-mails. Please e-mail me and let me know what you think. Don't forget, nobody has figured >out that "Nightbirds were singing and the ??? filled the air" line. ;) It is darkness. I know it does not sound the least like darkness, but if you listen to a lot of Jewel's singing, she tends to slur some words together. I suppose it might be just due to her natural stresses on sylables, or just her artistic license on the words (Like in her cover of Donovan's Sunshine SUperman)... whichever, it does kinda create confusion in anyone trying to pick out the lyrics. The "darkness" is more audible in some recordings than others... hope I helped ya out! back to those darn finals... *hugs* Tessa ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Dec 1997 16:27:21 GMT From: jlefler@crest.srhs.k12.nj.us (jlefler) Subject: just a thought... Brian Wallace ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Dec 1997 10:34:46 -0600 (CST) From: dkaracos@marlin.utmb.edu (Derrick) Subject: SJC: Juliana Hatfield vs Jewel I had never seen her (JH) perform live before, not even on TV, I have only heard her CD's...until last night. I went to her show in Houston and was blown away...she has to be the most underated guitar player there is...at least out of all of the females. The only lead/rhythm guitar in the band was her...plus a bass, drums, and keyboards on some songs. And she held her own...very well. The club had about 100-200 people there maybe, and I was first row (floor), a little right of center stage. So I had a great look at her hand movement, chord changes, etc. She's simply amazing. I was skeptical about her being able to duplicate some of the things on the CD's, the lead parts, but she did them near perfect. After the show, right before leaving she came out and signed a few autographs and took some pics. The band was in a hurry and were rushing her so I thought it was nice she took about 5 minutes to do that for the fans...there were only about 10 of us left there at that point. I've seen a few pics and video clips of her on the Lilith site, and all I can say is that she's 10 times better sounding and prettier in person. All of the pics I've seen of her don't do her justice...she told me she's not very photogenic. Guys, brace yourself here, but I think she'd give Jewel a run for her money in the looks category. Meaning in person. Of course Jewel is very photogenic, so comparing pictures isn't fair. I just find it amazing that such a talented singer/guitar player can go from selling millions of albums to playing small clubs again in a matter of a few years. She had 2 multi-million selling albums...one just a couple years ago, and now she's playing clubs...I'm not complaining in one aspect, because it's a great place to see bands, and an opportunity to meet them. She does have a new CD EP out, but I bet almost no one even knows that. It's very good, much different than her last full-length CD. She said she's written enough for another full-length CD, but is having label disputes, thus postponing the release. She played a few of those other songs as well, they were all very good. About 16-18 songs in all with 2 encores. The club I was at had the most people I've seen there in over a year...that surprised me some. I guess some fans are still out there, but the CD sales don't reflect that. So, I was just thinking that this really brings to reality the idea that a few years from now, maybe up to 5, Jewel may be in a similar situation. Once she's released 3 or 4 CD's as Juliana has, and risen to stardom (as she has so quickly), then many of us might just have the opportunity to see her once again playing small clubs...I hope she's successful for a long time, but it would be nice to be able to see her perform in a more intimate setting once again. So everyone, if you want to hear a good all-around CD, go out and buy Juliana's new one...it's not alot of money, about $6-$7, has 6 songs on it, and is called "Please Do Not Disturb." It deserves a listen. And, if any of you don't have her older stuff, I'd say "Become What You Are" is THE cd to get if you only have money for one. That was her most popular. It's very good, lots of diversity. I hope Jewel is successful for a long time to come, but I couldn't help but to think a few times last night, how in the year 2002, I could be seeing Jewel up there on stage...3 or 4 CD's later...ya never know.
