Okay, Ive seen so many posts about this comment that I felt I had to respond. David Spade is a COMEDIAN. He has made a name for himself by making fun of celebrities. It's what he's known for. I do admit that it sounds like he went too far with that one but Im sure he didn't mean anything personal. It was a joke. Calm down, relax a little. It's all in good fun. Anywayz, it did suck that Jewel didn't perform all though I did figure that it was a mistake because I didn't see it on her scheduled tour dates. Well, that's about it for this post. Have a great week y'all. Many of us don't understand about being homeless and out on the street, like Jewel once did. Having to live in a van without a home to go back to is cruel IMO, and shouldn't be made fun of. Sure, Jewel may have told it to magazine writers and T.V. reporters, but they are always interested in asking her that question, so she naturally tell her story when she is interviewed. I think Spade and the writers of the Billboard Music Award probably were looking for a cheap joke, and they decided to use it on Jewel. Frankly, I'm just as surprised to hear some EDAs out there think Spade's joke was funny or even appropriate. I thought that as Jewel fans you guys should understand her life and situation better than that SNL comedian. Maybe I was wrong. The bottom line is, joking about Jewel being homeless isn't a joke at all; it's not funny to talk about people this way. This is just my observation over the whole thing and not meant to criticize anyone except Spade and folks from BMA. By the way I have met Jewel and she is as friendly and approachable as one can imagine; she has none of that "celebrity" attitude we often heard or seen on T.V. Jewel is just a simple girl with an extraordinary talent and wonderful personality, and she is truly an EDA! :) Steven ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Dec 1997 00:51:10 -0500 From: "Ed Kwon" Subject: Enough on Spade and SNL and etc.! Must we go through this every time someone cracks on Jewel? Alright listen, just to save time and email, the next time someone makes a joke about Jewel in a high profile place, read each of the following statements at least four or five times: A: I'm really upset that XXX made that joke about Jewel at XXX. I thought it was really unfair. B: Guys, it was just a joke! C: I think it should be taken as a compliment as it shows that Jewel's finally made it and is popular and successful. So everyone save this post and keep it handy, ok? And remember to read it next time someone makes fun of Jewel! Sorry, end-of-the-semester stress. Thank You Johnny Wilson ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Dec 1997 13:05:45 +0000 From: peppeg@cni-usa.com Subject: All the whining about Billboard Now just to clear up all this confusion, let me state some facts about the music industry in general and award shows in particular: There are about a thousand different music award shows. Each of them needs to gain as many viewers as possible. If every award show had the same winners, no one would watch any of them. Because of this, each show creates it's own emphasis. For example, MTV is obsessed with creating their own stars (like Jamiroquai), Billboard made the decision to push country, and support Leanne Rhimes. The world will not come to an end because there was one damn award that Jewel didn't win. Award winners are in no way completely indicative of talent (The Spice Girls won, for Christ's sake), album sales (even in the Billboard awards), or concert grosses. Award winners are based on a combination of those three factors, with a little economics and politics thrown in. That may suck, but it's life. The fact is, if every award show gave the same awards to the same people, and had the same performers, nobody would watch them. There would be exactly one award show the entire year, and if your favorite performer wasn't at that one, tough. This is what the market has dictated. People have a rabid need for seeing award shows, and the industry has produced them. Every trade magazine, radio station, TV network, chart, organization, and newspaper in the freakin' country gives out yearly music awards. I somehow don't think that missing out on this one is going to kill Jewel. And about the whole David Spade thing... Grow up, people. It was a joke. Don't take it so damn personally. People need to be able to laugh at themselves. How the hell can you do that if you can't take a joke that wasn't even directed at you? Remember the MTV awards? Chris Rock was being brutal. And every time he made a joke regarding someone in the audience, they showed that person, laughing their asses off. If you are really that offended, I suggest you unplug the TV, turn off the lights, turn on your stereo, and think angelic thoughts. That way, nothing from the outside world will upset you again, and you'll stay the hell out of the way of normal, functional members of society. The costs is 7.99 +.66 tax thats 8.65 if you send me a s.a.s.e (self addressed and stamped envelope) if you wanna go that rout, but its in a jewel case, and i dont wanna hear bout em being cracked when they get to ya, if you go with this rout just send a check for 8.65 and sase. otherwise, i can mail em ina thing thats like .90 cents and the shipping is around 1.10 so add this to the 8.65 thats 10.65, just mail me a check for 10.65 if you dont wanna spend that much on shippin me a thing to ship back to you. my addr is Doug 11770 westheimer rd #407 houston, tx 77077 make checks payable to doug. uhh i guess money orders, cashiers cheks, travelers cheqs, personal checks, whatever, as long as they dont bounce. money orders will get shipped the next day, personal checks will hafta clear first (maby 3 days). and sase's will go out same day, the music store is on my way home from work so i can get em out that day, its first class federal mail, so how ever long it takes to get there, i doubt ill need ta say 4-6 weeks for delivery. ahh what would be cool is if you do send in for it, email me and give me a check number or somthing, with the amount, that way i can email you when i ship it, kinda like tracking or somthing, and youll have a better idea on when to expect it. your angel with a chevy ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Dec 1997 14:26:24 EST From: BudGoddess Subject: SJC: Angela's Thoughts 0;Q) Hello Everyone! Are you saying that the whole time she was living in her van, she has no other things to say, except that she washed her hair in public restrooms, etc.? I think Jewel is great, but I think that some people go a little overboard. David Spade is a comedian, a good one at that. He gets paid to make jokes about people. Some people seem to think that Jewel is so much above everyone, that if someone makes fun of her, they deserve the death penalty. I like Jewels music, but I also happen to think that what David Spade said was funny. Even if it was about Jewel. I'm sorry if I dont put her on a pedestal like a lot of the other people dp here. She's just a regular person who happens to have a beautiful voice. -Lisa > > Steve > > "I'm cold here...without you." -Sarah McLachlan > ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #941 ***************************
