I've read a lot of articles and interviews by musician/songwriters (mostly female). Often the interviewer would ask where they got ideas to their songs. A lot have said that when they write, they go into a sort of subconscious state. They write how they feel at that moment. Often times, they don't realize the meaning of their songs until a while after it has been written. In the Intimate and Interactive w/ Jewel, she did say that Don't was about her ex-boyfriend. That show was the only one where she told us that story. The others I've heard, she told a different story. I'll be reading all the e-mails over the days ahead, but right off I've read some posts about a controversy concerning Jewel's comments at the Pajama Jam. I was there at Java Joes, sitting in the closest chair to Jewel on the stage (Kaili, Beth, Ali, Kim and a few others were seated on the floor between my chair and the stage) and when Kaili handed the EDAs' gift for Jewel and Lenedra up to Jewel - Jewel said thank you and added "this is the best part of the gig". Kaili had a drawing of Steve Poltz (drawn by Marc Ratner) and after Jewel spotted it was "Poltzy" there was some joking around about it and that's when Jewel said "shut up" - it was a joking reference to the Poltzy situation (sorta like Dharma on that tv show says "get out"!) - it was definitely not meant as an insult to Kaili or anyone else. So, if anyone has taken it that way in all the excitement, I'm happy to be able to clear this misconception up. Kris Kane has the whole thing on videotape and Mr BB has it on audio as well - Jewel was gracious and appreciative of her fans presence and both she and Bibi were not in the best of health so them showing up is another indication of the gratitude being extended toward EDAs. The big news of the week is that the EveryDay Angels Foundation is now a legal nonprofit corporation! Yes, folks, we officially exist!! We had almost a week of fun-filled activities out in San Diego, but we also got a lot accomplished. We had our first official Board of Director's meeting where we ratified bylaws and elected officers. Thursday's Thanksgiving visit to Rachel's House was a powerful experience, touching not only the women at the shelter but many of our own angels as well. Thanks go out to Chris Moynihan and Eric Gaerske for lending their musical talents to the day. Friday's Brunch was an event to remember! That night's show and Pajama Jam at Java Joe's was a great success. All the artists, including surprise guest Jewel, were spectacular. Thanks go out to Joe for being a gracious host. A considerable amount of clothing was collected for the Jamaican families which will be fowarded to them by Nancy Morales. As usual, it was the people who made the week so wonderful. We had about three dozen EDA's attend. Of course, none of this would have happened without the generosity and hard work of Nancy and Tom Morales who, once again, opened their home and hearts to us. She and Jewel are friends and performed together with Joy Eden Harrison, Elizabeth Hummel and Peggy Watson in a collective called "The Divas" which was also a kind of women artists support group/thing that went on for awhile in '94 and part of '95. I talked to Lisa Sanders today, and I believe I can help put the "pathetic" issue to rest. Lisa is a good friend of mine, so I feel I can explain this on her behalf. She is aware that there is discussion on the 'net about this issue. This is what she told me: (I'm paraphrasing) Jewel had just flown back from I don't know where, was tired and not really in the mood to deal with anyone (sounds reasonable). Lisa is not always very confident and at times is self-deprecating. Jewel is very supportive of her and felt she was being too hard on herself and used the word "pathetic". Also, when Jewel was leaving Java Joe's she was trying to get Lisa's attention, and Lisa who was also tired wasn't paying attention, didn't hear her, so Jewel loudly told her she was leaving and she wanted to say goodbye. I think its finally cleared up that those who knew Jewel and Lisa Sanders have confirmed that it was all in good fun. But I think this raises another question. Are we allowing Jewel to be human? Seriously, Jewel is a human being just like everyone else, and while she is talented, and wonderful, or whatever, she is STILL a person and she probably makes mistakes.
