Well for those of you who are familar with the show, there was this one episode were Rikki's dad was beating him and he didn't have a place to stay. And there was this one homeless girl that was sort of watching out for him at this warehouse were he was staying. And this girl played the guitar and sang and before you saw who the girl was you just heard her playing the guitar and singing, and for a second I swore it was Jewel. I just thought it was really ironic almost that there was character that was homeless but had this incredible voice. And what even more incredible, at the end of the show it turned out the homeless girl, she wasn't alive. It was like she was an angel that had been watching over Rikki. It just really touched me. Thanks for reading, if anyone else watches the show or saw this episode I would really like it if you e-mailed me privately. Peace Love Happiness and Kudos Ann the Broken-Hearted Angel P.S. Now, I could see if specific posts ONLY relating to Manson were trashed; afterall, this IS a Jewel discussion list. But posts which discuss Jewel's music and beliefs as opposed to Manson's are fairly interesting and informative to me, although I'm not a Manson fan by any stretch of the imagination. All too often I see posts on here about Sarah McLaughlin, Tori Amos, Tara Maclean (I THINK that's her name), and many other artists, and most of these have NOTHING to do with Jewel whatsoever. If you're gonna ban Manson's name from the list, you gotta ban them all. I don't support Manson's actions or beliefs, but I DO support fairness. And, to be completely honest, I think a BIG part of this decision had to do with Manson's reputation. In all honesty, it's hard to believe that the same actions would have been taken had a Jewel vs. Amos, McLaughlin, etc. discussion erupted. By the way, no need to flame me over this opinion (but you can gladly do so if you wish); at the rate at which this list is plummeting, I don't see myself sticking around much longer. Sorry if anyones feelings got hurt. I never > thought I'd see the day my free speech was trampled. My name is Mike. Free speech does not apply to a *privately* paid for and run mailing list, especially one with 1600 subscribers who are here mostly for Jewel and also are quite active with their private complaints. (and MANY compliments too....thanx folks, you know who you are! :) This list is quite similar to any magazine or newspaper that is PRIVATELY financed and run. They don't publish every "letter to the editor", and they never publish two that say the same thing. It is not a totally public forum. If you want to spend *your* time, money and resources on a mailing list, go for it. If you did, just like this list, it would start out small and have a nice community feel to it...but as it would grow, the same problems that have happened here would happen on your list. Unless of course you decided to just let it run loose with no restrictions, in which case people would likely leave rather quickly. The dude that owns this list spends time and MONEY and quite a bit of it on a monthly basis. I spend a lot of money and A LOT more time running this thing a week than you spend reading it in three months. (IF you read it *all*) > The subject was Jewel and just a thought about her and her > future musical direction. I see now however her hair clips and > feathers are much more interesting. But the Manson thread just got out of hand, and they didn't involve Jewel much anymore. If you noticed it DID go on for a while, where people discussed Jewel and Manson and how they would be interesting together. I even enjoyed the discussion for a while :) However, all that could be said, had been said. Many threads run their course, this one had too. (Plus, as I said, I was getting complaints) About the feathers and hair posts...did you notice they suddenly ended too? I was getting more than a few complaints about those threads too. They ran their course also. (one thing to note, one reason many threads run on & on is simply due to some people not being able to read their email for a while and being behind, and also due to posting before readiing all of the email they have, thus at times repeating something that had already been said or a question already answered....it's THE one major reason we got like 18 "announcements" sent to the list thinking they were the *first* announcing about Jewel's movie and book deals) Some of you may say (and do!), "Well, ignore the complaints". Now what kind of business, list manager or whatever could or want to do that? Here's another factor in ending the thread (which as I said, in my opinion, had pretty much had everything possible said about it).....numbers: Every day, there are about 60 to 80 emails sent to jewel@smoe.org, let's call it 70. There are over 800 people on loose mail and nearly 900 on digest. Every subscriber gets a copy of those emails. 70 daily emails times 800 subscribers equals 56,000. Add on about 900 digest subscribers times 3 or 4 daily digests and the number nears 60,000 DAILY outgoing emails (quite a strain on smoe.org). Juno, Hotmail, AOL and other accounts have maximum email quotas, you are only allowed a certain number of unread emails in your box. When an inbox fills up, further emails to that account bounce back to the sender. For posts from Jewel@smoe.org (and the digest too) the sender is NOT the author of the post, it's owner-jewel@smoe.org....which is me. Due to the high number of daily posts to this list, every day many folks have their email accounts fill up. Also, MANY folks either kill or abandon an account without unsubscribing. When those boxes fill, they begin to bounce to. Normally, that amounts to 300 to 1,200 daily BOUNCED emails to me. (care to guess how many copies of each Manson-only post I got?) Mid last week, AOL had an email downage. All emails to the AOLers were held during the downage, then suddenly released. Those AOL subscribers on this list that don't check their mail often had their boxes fill up. Each day on Wednesday through Saturday I had over 2,000 bounced emails come to me, and on Friday it topped 3,000. I cannot just delete all of them, as the boxes stay filled until the person logs on and gets their mail. Thus, what I have to do is read many of them, see WHO is filled up and move them to digest. (better to get 4 bounces per person than 70) I delete about all but about 200 daily bounces, and use those 200 to hopefully "see" all of the accounts who are bouncing. Since AOL at times takes a week to return bounced emails, I am *still* getting bounces from that downage, ten days ago. (Care to guess how many Manson bounces from this thread I'll get next week?) So, EVERY post to the list adds up, it adds to that 60,000 daily outgoing email figure. It adds to the bounces that come back, which also put an added strain on smoe.org and it's provider. For those of you that weren't here in the summer, I got pressure from the smoe.org owner and his internet service provider to bring the quantity of daily list emails down. ANY small provider would not relish a single mailing list that accounts for that many emails...they DO have them, but if the posts go too far up, they squawk about it. Paul wrote: > All too often I see posts on here about Sarah McLaughlin, Tori Amos, > Tara Maclean (I THINK that's her name), and many other artists, and > most of these have NOTHING to do with Jewel whatsoever. In all honesty, it's hard to believe that the same > actions would have been taken had a Jewel vs. Amos, McLaughlin, etc. > discussion erupted. Well Paul, we'll never know now will we? It's because a Tori or Sarah THREAD never ran on that long. If it did, I'd end it too, you'll just have to trust me on it. (The smoe owner and I once quietly ended a Spice Girls thread...and I like their CD!!) Once a MASSIVE thread gets into a "repeat" mode I start getting complaints. If posts about Manson, Hanson or the Spice Girls didn't create a LONG thread, it would be OK, but those artists are either loved or hated, and people are very vocal about the topic, and passionate about it, thus MANY posts come on the list about them when the topic arises. When a Tara, Sarah or Tori post comes up, it simply does not drive the same number of responses. (although at times, Tori does) Also, if it is/was a factor, it's not Mansons' reputation, it's Manson's music. In my opinion, people talk of Sarah, Tara and others more often on this list than Manson because they are more similar to Jewel's style (an understatement). I would be willing to bet that NIN or some other harder music act comes up on the Manson list quite a bit more often than Jewel does. (just a hunch) How would a *long* Jewel thread go over on the Manson list? > BTW, for anyone who's interested, the +LIVE+ mailing list currently > possesses the same cohesion, love, and unity that I once felt personified > this list. DEFINITELY check it out if you're a fan. I (we) are trying Paul. We really are...it just takes time, what with having an outside life too.
