It's not true, of course, as all good angels, prophets, social reformers, rabbis, and healers know. Part A may well be true -- experience sadly seems to bear it our -- but part B is obviously not true if one is determined enough to learn about caring, pro-social activities and movements perhaps out of one's own sad personal experience of victimization. I know this from my own experience. Bodies, bucks, and ballots, for example, are the three things which are supposed to define politics. That may describe the way things are, but there are many examples of how that doesn't define the only way things can change. One needn't organize a political majority to effect social change. One need only organize the ones who care. However small a majority they may be, they will be the ones others turn to for help or advice when they need it, like when they get in trouble. As oppressive, disengaged, and exploitative as people in general may seem to be, small, organized groups of caring people can make all the difference in the world. That's about all that any social, political, or religions movement has ever had to offer. As Margaret Mead said "Never doubt a small, committed group of citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Nov 1997 15:54:29 -0800 From: "Larry G."
