Well, here I am in "sunny" California and it's pouring rain. But that's ok cause I love the rain. Anywayz, I was sitting in my room listening to "Pieces of You" with the sound of rain in the background and it dawned on me that Jewel's music is the perfect music for a rainy night. It's so soothing and dramatic that it really brings out the mood of a rainy night. It was neat experience. I think the two songs on POY that really bring out this effect are "Foolish Games" and "You Were Meant for Me". Especially the latter. I just love listening to Jewel in the rain. Anywayz, keep the dream alive. I love you all. It's always been widely reported that Jewel grew up on an 800 acre homestead. However, Atz's sister Stellavera recently told an EDA that it was only 600 acres. I never thought to ask about this, but I was chatting with Jewel's dad, Atz, today & brought it up. He just emailed me the definative answer. Seems there's always more to the story than anticipated! ;-) Here's Atz's answer: My parents bought a homestead that was already proven up on house clearing land etc. It was bought with money that my mother got from her mother in Switzerland. They lived in that old fox trappers cabin, one room, about 12x14, for about 2 years until my dad completed a larger log house, 2 bedroom, 16x16 on the homestead they were homesteading. They each recieved 160 acres. So at this point the homestead totalled 320 acres. Then, in the late 60's or early 70's, my dad aquired 320 acres of "agricultural preferance rights land" adjoining the original land. This brought total homestead acreage up to 640 acres. My brother, sister and I bought 130 more acres next to the homestead also. So, in the Kilcher family, there is currently 770 acres. But the original land that I was raised on was only 320 acres. When Jewel lived out here, it was the 770 figure belonging to the family. How's that for a complete answer? Do I get extra credit?---Atz Well folks...There ya have it! :-) MrBB ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Sep 1997 10:40:10 -0400 From: ABershaw@aol.com Subject: Jewel News: MrBB-MESSAGE FROM JEWEL Hi again, The Kilchers are cyber-active today! I'm heading for Europe but my enthusiasm is pretty low, don't have too much energy for conquering the world, but I'll try. At least I'll have my EDA guitar picks to perk me up! They make me smile. You've seen them stuck to my mic stand sometimes? Mostly I can't wait for time off to process everything that's happened with and to me. And time to WRITE SONGS! I hear from time to time these wonderful stories of you taking good care of each other, helping people in trouble and stuff, and I always feel very proud to know you and have your support. I think that we can't leave it all up to the Dianas and Mother Teresas--we have to see as individuals that no one we know goes hungry in any way we can help. There's so much that individuals can do and you guys really get that. We are the better world. Thank you all so much for being there for me and for others. Hey all, It seems that Lilith Fair was the most succesful concert tour of the summer after all. Apaprantly, Sarah, Jewel and company did indeed narrowly beat out Ozzy Osbourne's Ozzfest. Here is an excerpt from an article found today in Addicted to Noise that explains: "Outgrossing the opposite-end-of-the-gender-spectrum Ozzfest, a testosterone-heavy-metal package featuring big name acts and Ozzy Osbourne reuniting with Black Sabbath by several million dollars, the women of Lilith took the crown for the summer package tour champ. Based on figures gathered to date by concert industry trade magazine Amusement Business (sister publication of Billboard), Lilith outpaced Osbourne's Ozzfest '97, by more than 100,000 attendees. Both tours launched a full schedule of dates for the first time after dipping their toes in the water last year with a handful of trial shows. As of Sept. 24, with the numbers in on 27 of the 37-dates tour, the Lilith Fair, which featured McLachlan and a rotating list of female-fronted acts including Sheryl Crow, Tracy Chapman, Suzanne Vega and Jewel, grossed $12,278,833 with an attendance of 456,819 and 19 sell-outs, playing to 93 percent of capacity. That compares to 80 percent average capacity for the runner-up Ozzfest."
