It's always been widely reported that Jewel grew up on an 800 acre homestead. However, Atz's sister Stellavera recently told an EDA that it was only 600 acres. I never thought to ask about this, but I was chatting with Jewel's dad, Atz, today & brought it up. He just emailed me the definative answer. Seems there's always more to the story than anticipated! ;-) Here's Atz's answer: My parents bought a homestead that was already proven up on house clearing land etc. It was bought with money that my mother got from her mother in Switzerland. They lived in that old fox trappers cabin, one room, about 12x14, for about 2 years until my dad completed a larger log house, 2 bedroom, 16x16 on the homestead they were homesteading. They each recieved 160 acres. So at this point the homestead totalled 320 acres. Then, in the late 60's or early 70's, my dad aquired 320 acres of "agricultural preferance rights land" adjoining the original land. This brought total homestead acreage up to 640 acres. My brother, sister and I bought 130 more acres next to the homestead also. So, in the Kilcher family, there is currently 770 acres. But the original land that I was raised on was only 320 acres. When Jewel lived out here, it was the 770 figure belonging to the family. How's that for a complete answer? And everybody who was part of this project should be very proud. As somebody who has the privilege of listening to all kinds of new music, I have to say this tape was the rawest and most amazingly beautiful thing I've come across, since, well, Jewel herself. And I mean raw in the best way, full of emotion and passion. The tape came at a perfect time for me because I've been struggling this week trying to figure out which way I should go in my career. And all of you reminded me how great music can be, and how much of a privilege listening to it and writing about it really is. So Eric and Angela, who I've met, you guys have awed me, and the rest of you that I haven't met, you have awed me as well. Also, Jewel and the EDAs have opened up more personal and professional doors than any of you could possibly comprehend. So to the ones who I met at Rockfest, and elsewhere. I have a story for all of you that I thought was very good. I already read it to my friend, and we both started crying. You don't have to read it, but if you want, here it is.(Its kind-of long. Sorry Mike:-( I got a suprise visit from a friend yesterday at school that I haven't seen for a while. I was in reading class and I was sitting in the back of the room in a group. My principal walked in and siad, "I have a suprise for you all. But it can only saty for a little while. So I thought it was a puppy or something. Everyone went to the front of the room crouded around. I stayed in the back by myself and I couldn't see. I heard my classmates say, "Awww." So I stood up and there was my best friend. Standing right in front of me. My mouth dropprd wide open. I could feel tears and lots of happyness in my heart. I was so shocked that I couldn't move. I finally walked over twards him. I felt one little tear rolling down my cheek. I was stepping closer and closer to a person that I dearly love and havn't seen for a long time. I finally step up to him, tears really coming down my cheeks, and I stop, look into his eyes and I saw the memories coming back. I didn't want to let go, but I couldn't just stand there and hug him. For the rest of the class, I cried and held his hand and heart in my soul. I got to talk to him for a little while, but not long. After a couple classes, he had to leave. I didn't wan to let go for the third time. I didn't want all of those memories to go away again. But they had to. He stood up and walked away. I sat there thinking, "I can't belive that it is happening again. There he goes again, walking out of my life." I wanted so much to stand up and give him a hug and kiss goodbye, but something was wrong. My legs would not move, my arms lay still, I star into another world from the past, my mind totally erased. And my heart, just broken once again. The rest of the day I couldn't think, and i coulnd't blink. I just have that one little memory of my arms wrapping around his body one last time. I hope so much that I will see him again. If we could just spend a little more time with each other, that would be so nice. Thats it. This story was written by me. Accually, it is infact true.
