This weekend , I can understand where she's coming from. It was because of a few west coast EDA's that I got to live the most surreal of weekends in San Diego. No less than a week ago I was scrounging together information to do a story on the San Diego music scene . I called up Larry Greenfield to get some inside scoop and he managed to coax me out from Virginia and into heaven..oops...I mean , San Diego. Before I knew it, I was on a plane and off . Upon arriving at LAX, I found Larry who was gracious enough to be my wonderful host for the weekend. I could babble forever about the events of each day, as they were simply unbelievable. However, I'll try to summarize the highlights and do them justice at the same time. Thurdsay: Larry and I drive down to San Diego to catch Gregory Page @ Java Joe's. On the way down, I met two of the most genuine angels as we stopped by Tom and Nancy's house (hi guys!). After that ...it was off to the infamous Java Joe's in Oceanbeach. When we arrived , I was able to say "hello" to Gregory, Java Joe, Wendy, and other EDA's ,Igor, Lora and Natalie(?)god..I forgot the right name (hey, now YOUR fly is down sister:) As I sat back in the comfort of JJ's with a killer Rugburn in my hand (3 shots of espresso kids!) and proceeded to be blown away by the ingenious Gregory Page. Guys, go get this guys album! He recalled a cute moment when he first heard Jewel yodel and said, "Hmmm, this girl is on to something!" He then yodeled as well! To our surprise, we were treated to a mini set by Miss Elizabeth Hummel as well:) Yaaaayyyyy. After the show, Larry and I set off and managed to navigate and find where we were staying using a map w/out house numbers and street names....we're good, what can we say. FRIDAY: After an Einstein Bagels bit o' nourishment and the essential pit stop at Target, Larry and I had a visit with a really insightful fellow named Paul Williams and walked around and about and down to the shore. Before I knew it, I was back at Java Joe's AGAIN for the all star jam. I was able to get a ton of information with my interviews b/f the show in the back room of JJ's . That night was unreal. Every person who played was stellar (Gregory and his smiley ukulele, Cindy Lee, Lisa Sanders, John Katchur, Randy Driscoll, CJ, Elizabeth, etc...). The greatest aspect of these shows is the interaction between the audience and the artist. Part II Coming Soon . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Sep 1997 00:41:57 EDT From: sparksmark@juno.com (Sparks the Everyday Angel) Subject: Re: NJC... a lost friend This is indeed sad news. We are in contact everyday with the people we love and most of the time, we don't even tell or show them that we love them. Like Brian said, we take things and people for granted. We assume that they'll always be around, so why do anything about it now? I haven't lost anyone I loved due to suicide, but I have lost loved ones by other means of death, and it's a big shock! When you hear the news of someone you love dead, it feels like it's a dream. Your heart wants to protect itself from breaking, so it tries to trick your mind into thinking that this really isn't happen. When in fact, it is. Some people are really good at hiding their feelings, and when something is going wrong in their lives, it's hard for their friends to detect it and help them. Sadly enough, most of those people don't get enough love from other people to trust in them and talk to them about their problems, so they never do. They then feel alone and feel that life has no purpose for them anymore...that it has no purpose for anyone else around them. Then, they commit suicide. Anyways, my prayers are with you Brian, your friend, his family and friends. May this tradegy not go on as a complete loss and that all of us may benefit from a great lesson about life, and how precious and delicate it really is. Remember it and pass it on to others that you know might be feeling down and isolated from the world for choosing to be who they are. If you dare to be different and you do not join the crowd - if they laugh at your honesty and taunt you if you're proud - when they talk of you in whispers and criticise the things you say and do - do not fear them, but forgive them - they are more afriad than you - Nanushka This is from a series of books called 'The Thoughts of Nanushka' by Nan Witcomb. (from the back of one book): Nan Witcomb writes under the name of Nanushka which she believes represents the thoughts of people all over the World. Nanushka lives within each of us, belongs to everyone and yet, to no-one - - perhaps Nanushka is part of you.... Whenever I'm feeling a bit low because others choose to criticise me or doubt my ability, I pull out my folder of insperational(sp) thoughts and quotes and read this one in particular. Or Listen to Jewel of course:) If anybody would like to read some more of Nanushka or other stuff from my folder, please e-mail me. Anyway, better go. Last week I was talking to Bibi about this very topic. As of this moment there are NO authorized posters of Jewel out there. There ARE many *promotional* posters and other promo items out there that Atlantic Records sent out to CD stores, radio stations and other media etc for promotional use, and the *posters* are commonly found in used CD stores and CD shows....of course the promo CDs like "Save The Linoleum" and "Phyllis Barnaby Finally Gets A Bra" exist too....I wish everyone luck in finding those promo CDs however (although that one dude posted this week about finding TWO "Phyllis Barnaby" CDs!!) Hmmmmmm, talk about a gray area, Jewel also gets zilch from sales of Atlantic Records produced promo items, but at least THEY are authorized products that were used to promote her. To semi-answer Tim's last question about Jewel posters ("are they done working on it?") she (Bibi) also mentioned that authorized Jewel merchandise would be out there soon. I know you've heard it before, but it IS coming and it IS soon.
