FRIDAY: After a lovely lil' lunch with Elizabeth, Karen, Chelsea, and Larry (fried pasta anyone?) it was time to run over to Java Joe's and meet some other EDA's before Miss Jewel's show! When we walked in we were treated to a table performance by the phenomenal Lisa Sanders and Mary Dolan. Man, can they tear the roof off of a place! The best was when Larry sang Steve's part of "Rainbow!" Rock on Larry! I met some more EDA's briefly (Marcus, Gerrit, Jason, Kris..aggghh I'm blanking so guys forgive me!) before we had to run off to the venue for my 5:00 interview w/ Steve! As we drove over, we could hear Jewel's voice from across the highway! We were getting super psyched! After trying to get backstage without the credentials that were needed , BiBi came out and took Larry and I behind the gate. Whew. Jewel was on the stage doing her soundcheck and man did it sound fantastic. I was then introduced to Bob Duffey and Steve . We decided to do the interview after Steve's soundcheck , which was cool b/c we got to sit back and watch Jewel and Steve on stage! Finally, we saw Bob Duffey and he handed us our backstage passes and took us on back behind the fence. Can anyone see why I'm still trying to wake up from this!? Jewel was standing on the sidewalk talking to these two guys all decked out in her lil' cowboy hat. Steve then came out and asked if we wanted to go over to the picnic tables to do the interview. Somehow ,we ended up in his trailer . As I proceeded to internally freak out and maintain my outer composure.....I started to ask Steve questions about the SD music scene all the while he's strumming away on his guitar. Larry got some great pics of Steve and I that ended up getting exposed later that night (BUMMMMMMER...but we're still going to try and develop them and see what happens.) Part III gets even better............................................................... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Sep 1997 00:16:47 -0400 (EDT) From: HILARYL123@aol.com Subject: EDA SAN DIEGO ADVENTURE PART 3 So, then as I'm interviewing Steve we hear. . . . knock knock at the door. Well, lo and behold it's little Miss Jewel. She enters and says "Hi, I'm Jewel !" (Larry, you can put the voice behind that one if ya want:) I'm in shock but trying to act normal and end up blurting out. . . "Really." sounding kinda snotty. Whoops, I was nervous. From this point on , I wished that I had had a tape recorder rolling to capture this conversation. Jewel or Steve , I can't recall, needed a piece of gum so I gave them some . Some how, the topic of imitations came up and Jewel said that she can do a really good Cindy Lee Berryhill. She didn't do it though. Then, they both sat in this big chair and talked away. Steve told us tons of information about his trip to the doctor's office and Jewel likened him to a "fucking cockroach" b/c he can drink , etc. . while she has to drink vegatable juice to stay healthy. It was a funny moment. Jewel had some really great things to say about the EDA's which was cool. She loves the idea that we just come together to help eachother out and in her words , "it's a real sense of community." Larry asked her if she was relentlessly touring to compensate for the amount of success coming her way and she made a scrunchie face and said , "No." In so many words, she said that she'll know when she wants to put a limit on herself. Steve said that she can't stop touring "otherwise I'll beat her. I'm like a white Ike Turner." So, we all burst into laughter and Jewel's doing that little giggly thing that she does. "He hits pretty hard for a white guy!" That was just classic. We talked about other things that I can't even recall b/c I'm still coming down from this high! After I felt like I had taken too much of their quality time , I decided to say bye bye. As I was packing up, Steve said "Thanks Heather. " Then Jewel repeats it and this goes on as I walk to the door. FInally, I had to say, "Guys, it's Hilary." They were like "oops" then they proceeded to do the same thing with the right name. Goofy kids. Now, completely pumped . . . it was time for the show! ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #774 ***************************
