Correct me if I'm wrong.. but doesn't this end up happening at every EDA event anyway!?!? Besides.. i think there are only a handful of EDAs worth traveling to hear sing anyway. ;> (No offense!! I'm definitely NOT one of them! In fact, if I recall.. several EDAs would pay NOT to hear me sing.. ;P eheheh) Then again if those handful of EDAs have tons of time on their hands for months on end, we could tour 'em all 'round 'till they're tired of it! :> eheh *ahem* Oh wait.. time.. So, Guess who's VISITING ME RIGHT NOW!? yes, ladies and gentlemen, the world (ok, northamerican) traveler Mr Paul "I have purple hair" Kim. (the originator of the quote within names) So if you havn't seen him lately, his hair is purpler than mine, and that's just tooooo kewl. He says: "uhmmm... I dunno. Do I have to say something? uhhhm, make up something" Original, huh? wait he continues... "TO everybody that I stayed with, I love you all." Paul met Sarah (I was there too! yeah :) and Tara on his trek across the country. but not Jewel, but I guess that's ok, cuz he's met her in the past. That's pretty groovy. I must say that "bst" is much cooler to say than "nsc". I think Paul bought out every used CD store between here and... uhm... everywhere else he was. OK, I'm embarrasing him I think. I'll stop :) Take good care all! Peace, Mia! ~~~~~ Vale et me ama, Amelia S. The EDA Music Video Compilation -- E-mail me if you would like to contribute a music video. Be creative. I think every Jewel song can easily be shown in a musical video. Please e-mail me at MAXMOUZE@aol.com to inform me on which song(s) you would like to do. The EDA Concert I think this will just be strictly for Southern California's, or anyone who can get to SoCA. However, if people want to arrange EDA concerts elsewhere, that'd be cool, too. But, for the SoCA one...if you live in Southern California (L.A., San Diego - -- that area) and want to participate, e-mail me telling me which songs you want to perform. If you just want to watch, e-mail me telling me this also. I think the concert should be October 19th, the day after Steve Poltz performs at Java Joe's, at the beach or somewhere around San Diego, since many people will be there already. Also, if you can help on either of these projects, please tell me. I hope that these work out -- it'll be a lot of fun, I think. There were so many questions to answer on the address form, that I don't know which ones to answer. Can someone please e-mail me privately and give me the information?? I would be so grateful. Also, I am a very new member of the EDA's and I am in desperate need of maybe some free angelfood from someone out of the goodness of their heart. (Did that make sense??) So be sure to check it out at http://sdam.com/awards/ballot.1997.html Jewel and Steve Poltz are nominated for Artist of the Year but you can't vote in this section. About the weekend -- that began for me on the 18th: Gregory Page at Java Joe's Gregory is simply amazing. I urge you all to check him out -- either by getting his CD from John-Eric or attending his shows. He comes back to LA next month where he'll be performing at The Mint with a full band including Stinky from The Rugburns on percussion. Lora tells me she and Natalie are in the process of making a website for him...so keyword: Cool Acoustic Singer/Songwriter and you'll be there... The 19th: All-Star night at Java Joe's. The packed house was graced with amazing performances by John Katchur, Gregory Page, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Lisa Sanders, and a walk on by Elizabeth Hummel. One could imagine a show with that much talent lined up and would be happy with one of them playing but to have all of them perform was a rare treat. The 20th: Best moment of the night was Tom and Kris finding a place to stash their cameras - "Equipment Next To Their Equipment." Steve was great. Jewel was a little better. Steve and Jewel were the best. And, of course, Nedra performing "FOL" with Jewel was amazing. Best song, I believe, was "Foolish Games." -- it made Lisa Sanders cry... I thought it was kind of weird that many EDA's were sitting so close together...pretty eerie how we all winded up sitting right next to each other despite getting tickets separately. "Down In Front" Larry Greenfield was sitting first row center (of course). All I have to say is that I sat with Lisa Sanders. The 21st: I attended the Local Music Fest in the early afternoon to check out some local bands. It was a great charity event that raised money for music in the elementary schools of San Diego. Those not watching the loud-but-good main stage of rock/punk acts and were lucky enough to be at Elizabeth Hummel and Lisa Sander's half-hour sets were treated with beautiful songs by the two divas. The LRT at Tom and Nancy's was, in my opinion, the best event of the long weekend. I'd just like to thank Tom and Nancy again for having the show. You two are really the best. Let me say first that I have seen Elizabeth, Cindy, and Lisa perform numerous times before dating back to 1993. With that out of the way, I have never seen them perform as well as this night. It may have been the whole intimate atmosphere of the dimly lit room and the beautifully Spanish-influenced abode but nevertheless it simply was a beautiful show. A pleasant -- and perhaps the best -- surprise of the night was Mary Dolan showing up with Lisa Sanders. Those of you who don't know Mary, she's another -- yes, another -- great local musician. Several months ago she and Randi Driscoll opened for the wonderful Dar Williams. So as it turned out, the show had four of the finest San Diego singer/songwriters all in the same living room which rivals the Bel Air LRT when Steve Poltz, Gregory Page, and Frank Drennen did a couple of songs. The Living Room Tour -- which, now, I believe is called The Future Folklore Tour -- is becoming bigger and bigger and getting more and more national attention. I can't tell you how much Lisa and Mary loved the idea. Hopefully, they will make the rounds to your living room soon and add to the growing list of San Diego artists that are touching the hearts of many of EDA's throughout the continent. I also got the newe launch CD with Sarah Mclachlan, you have to pick it up it's great if you love Sarah's music. She performs an acoustic version of building a mystery. There is also a small clip of Jewel saying what bands she likes! But I also got Issue 10 Vloume 3 of "Yahoo! Internet Life" It has a big article on the Web's Top 40. A internet music guide and guess who's one of the forty. It's Jewel! Heres the article: Jewel Jewel's online fans have dubbed themselves Everyday Angels, and they communicate with one another through a mailing list that has become one of the most tight-knit in cyberspace. In addition, Jewel was the subject of one of the earliest Mediadome Webisodes. Everyday Angels www.smoe.org/lists/jewel/angels Jewel Webisode www.mediadome.com/webisodes/jewel It also has a small picture of Jewel lying down with her guitar in her van. It also has jewel listed as number 4 in the top Tower Web Sales for "Peices of You". Way to go Jewel!! My best friend that lived in the town I used to live in about 4 years ago committed suicide last night (Sunday) :'(. I know this list receives news of individual tragedies quite a lot, and as many times as I can recall, I sent messages of condolence to those who were in need. For the first time in as long as I can recall, I cried... not because it's some macho thing NOT to, but just because this hit so close to home. Granted, older family members die, and it's very very sad to see them go, but it seems so much worse when a young person, especially a good friend, a BEST friend, dies, not just in an ACCIDENTAL death of some kind, but willingly, voluntarily... by his own hands... The idea of suicide makes me *SO* sad.... not just because someone lost his life, but because they were in *such* despair, such total and complete mental anguish; the very thought of it brings tears anew to my eyes. After I moved away from Zachary (the town in Louisiana where I lived), my friend Justin apparently got in with the wrong crowd, and started using drugs... to what extent I am unsure. After a messy divorce between his parents, he moved to west Louisiana. He also had a mentally retarded sister forever confined to a hospital. After he moved back to Zachary to attend his senior HS year, he again fell into trouble at school. A short while later, LAST NIGHT, he killed himself by shooting himself in the face with a shotgun. I *KNOW* he would not have gotten into the wrong crowd if I hadn't moved away... I feel so bad knowing that. To all Everyday Angels out there, I ask but one thing of you, which has become a personal philosophy of mine recently.... Never, under any circumstances, ever Ever EVER take anything for granted. Things vanish too quickly.... many have lost parents and friends recently, and never thought to say goodbye or how much they cared about them... so I also ask you, find someone you care about tomorrow, and tell them how much you care about them... Please, don't wait until it's too late. And no matter how bad anything ever gets, it's never bad enough to kill yourself over. If you don't know one single person that loves you, contact me somehow... I promise you ONE person always will. My angels, I love all of you. I pray for all of your safety and happiness. Anyway, I wont go into detail about the show since I'm sure the set list , etc. has been posted. One very special moment was when I looked behind me during "Foolish Games" and saw Lisa Sanders with tears trickling down her face . She said so sweetly, "I'm so proud of her. " Gosh, that moment alone embraces the type of community in that music scene. After the show, Jewel hung around the backstage area a little and then went into her trailer. I did manage to snag her for a quick pic, but didn't get anything signed. Once again, my apologies to Marcus for not getting the Mac and Cheese to her. Even though Jewel had disappeared many EDA's were still hanging out and having a great time chatting . Hey, even Stinky was there! So,that was the unreal night of all nights. SUNDAY: The very breathtaking Living Room Tour was the final event on my agenda. I cannot express how special it is to get together with other EDA's ! There's truly and energy generated and a lot of serendipity. Tom and Nancy did a fabulous job of hosting ,adorning their home in a myriad of candles and incense. As the evening got under way, the celestial voices of Lisa, Cindy Lee, Elizabeth and Mary Dolan merged to embrace all of us in hours of bliss. Words cannot do this performance justice. The saddest part was the conclusion of the evening and my dream like adventure. Many thanks to everyone who made me feel like I was with family. . . and in actuality I was. So, yes. . . dreams do come true , trust yourself and make them happen. . . I did and it worked:) Profound eh? Well, lo and behold it's little Miss Jewel. She enters and says "Hi, I'm Jewel !" (Larry, you can put the voice behind that one if ya want:) I'm in shock but trying to act normal and end up blurting out. . . "Really." sounding kinda snotty. Whoops, I was nervous. From this point on , I wished that I had had a tape recorder rolling to capture this conversation. Jewel or Steve , I can't recall, needed a piece of gum so I gave them some . Some how, the topic of imitations came up and Jewel said that she can do a really good Cindy Lee Berryhill. She didn't do it though. Then, they both sat in this big chair and talked away. Steve told us tons of information about his trip to the doctor's office and Jewel likened him to a "fucking cockroach" b/c he can drink , etc. . while she has to drink vegatable juice to stay healthy. It was a funny moment. Jewel had some really great things to say about the EDA's which was cool. She loves the idea that we just come together to help eachother out and in her words , "it's a real sense of community." Larry asked her if she was relentlessly touring to compensate for the amount of success coming her way and she made a scrunchie face and said , "No." In so many words, she said that she'll know when she wants to put a limit on herself. Steve said that she can't stop touring "otherwise I'll beat her. I'm like a white Ike Turner." So, we all burst into laughter and Jewel's doing that little giggly thing that she does. "He hits pretty hard for a white guy!" That was just classic. We talked about other things that I can't even recall b/c I'm still coming down from this high! After I felt like I had taken too much of their quality time , I decided to say bye bye. As I was packing up, Steve said "Thanks Heather. " Then Jewel repeats it and this goes on as I walk to the door. FInally, I had to say, "Guys, it's Hilary." They were like "oops" then they proceeded to do the same thing with the right name. Goofy kids. Now, completely pumped . . . it was time for the show! ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #773 ***************************
