The second best Jewel show I've ever seen (beat out only by Jewelstock). The outside venue was beautiful (even saw some shooting stars, made a wish for 'Down', 'Carnivore', and 'Face of Love' and all 3 came true...woo-woo!) and the crowd was great! Until the final encoure, I only heard one shout for 'yodel' and I only heard one 'take it off' the whole night. During the last song, some guy climbed onstage and put his arm around Jewel for a picture and she didn't even blink. I'm not even pissed at the guy at all, cuz he didn't interrupt the show at all and when security removed him he walked with them without putting up any resistance. Would've been a different story if I'd of seen a frisbee though... Daddy had some new lyrics to it and if I actually got some sleep last night I might be able to tell them to you. I think Foolish Games was the trimmed down single version, not the longer album version, I like the album version better :( Down kicked ass! I really love this song! She told the NY Post racist story, but went into more detail this time, it was really funny! She said before WWSYS was a hit she played for a model-convention and...well, you'll just have to get the tape to hear this one, it's worth it! Some other stories she told were: the Daddy Story, Bob Dylan stolen lyric story, and the Fragile Flame story. Face of Love was a duet with Lenedra, and was excellent. I love this song too, and I'm so glad she played it. I can think of only two other times Jewel has sang it: Jewelstock, and the breast-cancer fundraiser. Lenedra sang the first verse, and closed out the song with some awesome high-notes. Wonder where Jewel got her talent... Angel Standing Bye was dedicated to the memory of Mother Teresa and Princess Diana of Whales. I thought this was an appropriate tribute because the song fit the sentiment, unlike the Spice Girls who made me want to puke at the MTV Awards. C'mon...dedicating a song, an award, and wearing black armbands was excessive. Plus, the song didn't fit at all. It's called tact, girls...look it up. (sorry, John-Eric) Speaking of which...the only thing missing at the show was JOHN-ERIC! WTF, OB isn't the same without you! I don't care if you have to hitchike...get your self to the next San Deigo Jewel show! OK, now for the personal stuff. Casey said "secruity was like nothing", well that's not what happened to me! While my friend walked right in with his bag and all I got mine checked for 30 seconds! I am not exagerating! The guy digged into my backpack for seriously 30 seconds! He was digging and squeezing and looking and poking and he finally found my tape recorder. I was so pissed! I had already got by one security guard and any other line I could've gone right in easy but this jack-hole had to almost full-body search me. I ended up stashing the tape player outside and walking in without it...damn. And the winner for the bone-head of the night goes to...SINJIN! I don't care what anyone else tells you, IT DOES NOT PAY TO BE NICE! Nice people get the shaft again and again! I was going to hang backstage with the rest of the EDA's, but I overheard some guy locked his keys in his car. Since I'm pretty good at breaking into cars I decided that it was 'more than just a coincidence' that he ran into me so I walked out of the venue to help him out. When I tried to return to the venue, security wouldn't let me in! I tried telling them that a friend had my wallet, but they wouldn't budge. Aaaagh! This makes the 4th time I've blown an opportunity to say 'hi' to Jewel. I'm now batting .200 (that's 1 in 5, or 4:1). Lesson learned tonight: bad things happen to nice people, not only was I not able to greet Steve and Jewel but I wasn't able to hang with some of my friends. >From now on, I'm gonna be an EDD (everyday devil)...cuz nothing bad ever happens to bad people. After striking out with security, we decided to get on the bus and drive home but the bus line was forever! (note to Java Joe...IT'S A RIGHT TURN!!!) So we started walking to our car because we thought it'd be faster. It took us a while to get our bearings and find our car, and wouldn't you know...as soon as we walk up to the car a bus pulls up with the group of people who were right behind us in line. Despite security and the walk, it was a great night! Steve was exellent and Jewel ruled! You haven't seen her until you've seen her in San Diego, the vibe there is so cool. Can't wait for the next show! Sinjin ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Sep 1997 17:14:36 -0400 (EDT) From: Prism14960@aol.com Subject: NJC: sponsor me, please? Hey Angels, Ok, this is my first NJC post, and I feel really bad, but I have to ask this so I'll be really quick. There's this program at school called "Close-Up" and it's basically a trip to Washington D.C. to see the government 'close-up'. (get it?) Well, it costs $1,145 total. I was wondering if anyone would like to sponsor me or maybe the company you work for could sponsor me? It's tax deductible (is that spelled right?) if you do!!!! You or your company doesn't have to pay for the whole thing, but if you'd like to contribute a little I'd really appreciate it. The price includes airfare, hotel, and food. I'm gonna start selling candy at school and write letters to companies. I'd just thought I'd write my first letter to the list. By the way, I'm a good and hard working student! Remember, this is for school and it's tax deductible!! Thanks a lot, Angels!! I really appreciate it! Bye! Hey all you EDA's out there, I was just shopping in our little downtown shopping center at Penn State and guess what I found- 2 great Jewel posters! They're really big too! The one that I bought is a picture of her in a black (I think, I haven't even hung it up yet) spaghetti strap dress. She looks really pretty and is smiling away in this poster. Oh yeah, it is in color too. The other poster this place I went to has is a poster of her on the cover of Rolling Stones magazine (May '97 issue). This one's in b&w. They both cost $7. I will be more than happy to get a bunch of these posters to trade for angelfood or any other Jewel stuff you want to trade. I really love getting new angelfood! Let me know if you guys want a poster! Well after my last visit to San Diego, I was truly convinced that it was my duty in life to live there! So I'm packing up and moving out in 2 weeks! I'll actually will be living in Long Beach until May, and then I'll be heading down to SD! I'm jealous of all of you who will be attending the LRT at the Morales' tonight! Oh, I wish I could be there!! But I shouldn't complain, I definitely got my fair share of the San Diego music scene while I was there. You can never get enough though!! I called Mr. Steven J. Poltz last week to find out how his recording sessions went for his solo album. He is still very intrigued by the whole Living Room Tour concept to promote his upcoming album, so get your houses prepared!! I'll update you with any news I get from him. Speaking of the LRT, I met a wonderful person while I was in SD. He is very good friends with Steve, Stinky, and John, Jewel, Gregory Page, Lisa Sanders, Cindy Lee, and especially Elizabeth Hummel. His name is Frank Lee Drennen and is the lead singer of "Loam" a really great San Diego band. Frank is a long-time San Diego folkie, who started out playing the coffee-house circuit with Gregory Page, John Katchur (the man who taught Jewel how to tune her guitar), Jewel, Elizabeth, Cindy Lee, etc.. He decided to put a band behind his incredible voice and has become quite successful and created quite of following in California. They released an album in 1996 on local SD indie label STUNT Records called "Stereoscopic". They won the Best Local Recording for "Stereoscopic" at the San Diego Music Awards and were nominated for Best Adult Alternative Band. Anyways, they're really great, and Frank rocks!!! Liz loves him too, she's never actually met him, just talked to him on the phone, and you know if Liz loves him, everyone must love him! Anyways, we spent some time together while I was In SD, and he, like Steve, is very intrigued by the LRT concept and is very, very excited and interested in having one. He and Elizabeth have talked in depth about it, so watch your e-mail boxes, you wouldn't want to miss a show like this! Clark, their bass player bought John Castro's acoustic bass three days ago. So according to Frank, "we could totally play acoustic and not even need a monitor!" OK enough PR from me!! But they're great!! I'll keep you updated! So, take care all, nice to talk to you again! See you on the beach! A donation of $15 from 100 people would buy 5 tickets to San Diego, maybe that's what we should focus on! Or 30 donations would buy ten tix.....!!! =) We named ourselves Every Day Angels. We did so because of our effort to be angel-like everyday, not because we pool our resources together and help someone every now and then. We can be EDAs in our everyday, mundane life! Jewel constantly urges that of us! =) Be an Angel Every Day! =) Crunch! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Sep 1997 17:56:29 -0700 From: Ronda Morgan Subject: Re: Jewel News: MrBB-ANSWERS-Jewel's horse/The Benefit Gig ABershaw@aol.com wrote: > > Hi all, > I regret to confirm for you that Jewel's horse > was indeed killed in a freak accident in Del Marr > as was previously speculated. :-( > Although she's understandably upset (& battling > a cold at the moment), there has been no plans made > to cancel the Common Ground Benefit. I was watching SNL this weekend and it said for the season premiere on Saturday(I guess that part's obvious), September 27, the host will be Sylvester Stallone and the musical guest will be Jamiroquai. Since the SHOW was plugging it, I imagine that THAT is going to be the format. I was kind of upset to get confirmation on this... I imagine Jewel might not be on for a while, but I still have my fingers crossed that she will be on again this season. *sigh* Brian -- the Angel that Thinks a Lot brianbc@geocities.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Sep 1997 17:14:41 -0400 (EDT) From: DmBear978@aol.com Subject: San Diego Common Ground concert!!! Hi Y'all, I just got home from SD like...5 minutes ago(!:05pm)!! I never knew an escort wagon could go about 95 mph. Man, we were cruising!! Oh yeah, the show. Well, I drove Mark(sparksmark) & Danny(dmon951) yesterday afternoon. Had to stop twice. Once for gas, the other cause we got lost at a freeway fork: the I-5 / I-805 split. I now know why Jewel did WWSYS, I could picture all the stuff she talks about. I think thats the only town(Ocean Beach) that has bums that are buff. We stopped at Hospitality Point cause we didn't have directions to Joes. We parked really close to the entrance. I kinda regret leaving such a good parking spot to go to Joes. Oh well. This is a little funny...Mark called 411 for Java Joes phone #. Then I called the # & some guy picked it up. He must have been on crack or something. Mark missed the # by a digit. Anyway, I call up 411 again & get the right #. Call up Joes and blah blah...The awsome thing was that Jewel & her band was having a sound check we were on the damn phone w/ Joe asking for directions. (uh huh uh huh, Jewel is like...ya know...singing lets throw Mark over the fence! He could flash his EDA shirt!!!) Getting there, I thought it would be a bit...weird...I was right in a sense. A group of people were sitting in the middle of the place, some with EDA shirts, some without. I got to meet a couple cool people : Jason, Sonnia(spelling?), Markus, Garrett, Sinjin, Natille, & Lora :o) Who was the guy in the suit & was he the one that had every possible recording/listening device in his clothes? :) He should be on the Mission Impossible team! (MI theme in the background) The Show. Woe!! WhoRaY!!! I was 10 rows from the stage. I could see/hear everything just fine from my seat. Steve Poltz being the unanounced opening act. Yikes! Whats with him? :) He's singing about getting laid(that do wa do wa baby song) & building an igloo in Alaska?!? Jewel came out & dueted on Silver Linning. That song is so...cute Steve finishes & the house lights turn on. Woe! those are bright. I went up to a guard that was standing in front of the stage, asked him if he could give my card(which probably still on stage under those flowers) to Jewel before she came on. He told me this memorized shpeel about you could set it on the stage in front of her & you have to go back to your seat. Well, right before she started Don't I went up and stuck it between her monitors. The ideal spot for a present to be seen! What happens...a kid on his dad's shoulders dumps a huge load of flowers for her probably on top of my little card!! Argh!! she didn't see it at all. She finished her song. Said something about liking presents with her name on them. Kinda sarcastically :o) Steve comes out again & plays some song they completed that morning. It sounded alright. Heard Everything Breaks for the first time. My favorite was when she played that set with the Les Paul & played Love Me Just Leave Me Alone!!! I was probably the only person in my section that was hopping around in their seat. The rest of the show was good, but it could have been better. She played most of the POY CD, I didn't really expect that. I thought she was going to be chatty cause its SD, her adopted home -- nope. She gave the MuchMusic I&I stories(ok, not the first time she told them I just remember hearing almost the same thing on the tape) I never knew that it would be so hard to get a hotel room at 12:00am. We searched about 8 hotels before finding one at the Holiday Inn. Im telling you, folks it wasn't cheap. Memorable moments: Four words: Liz Hummel was here(Im out of it, thats her last name right?) That guy getting pulled off stage(Jewel didn't even flintch!!) Jewel yelling at the people at the Hot Dog Stand Driving over the same Sunset Cliffs Blvd Bridge about 30 times that evening That whole rock out set with the electric. Listening in the car to/going home from SD -=-JewelStock-=- Whats this I-5 downtown thing & why do we have to get on this damn English double decker bus to get to the parking lot? uh huh huh --Jewel's doing a sound check...lets see if we can get a couple of those Staff jackets!! hehehe Woe!! Nedra can sing!! (whats that song name?) Its long & had a great Birthday present(sorry Lora that I didn't get you anything). Danny turned 20 that night/day & Im 19 on Mon. Woo-Hoo!! Heres my song I made up about my trip to the SD concert: Danny & Mark keep jinkzing me saying that Im going to turn out like Jewel(thats a dream hoping to come true - someday soon. thats all Ive gotta say about that) Here it is(might add more later): Hotel Circle with a Vacant Sign V1 Half awaken headlings show the way Driving blindly to my destination A pillow to rest my head A place to call home one night Chorus Hotel Circle w/ a vacant sign Won't you let me in? Hotel Circle w/ a vacent sign Stay for the night with my friends V2 Staying up after the concert People spread the news About carmel candy color coated Dancing Baboos Swinging from trees that aren't ever seen Who can tell whats happened To that guy Mr. Bean V3 Gotta find a place for the night I fall asleep as time flys by Thats it. I gotta thank those EDAs that were at Joes when we showed up. Later 'Quiet Warrior' <--maybe someday she'll actually play it once Alex :) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Sep 1997 12:35:41 PDT From: "Brandon Nguyen" Subject: Common Ground was Great!
