For another note, Steph is in a poetry slam tomorrow (thursday, september 18) and would really love it if any EDA in Boston or in the Boston area could go to see her for that and what not. She really misses everyone and would like to talk to another EDA again. Well, if you think it's bad being a girl and liking Jewel.. take that and maybe multiply it by 5 and you'd get the feeling of what it is like being a guy and liking her music.. Not only do you get grief about people not liking her music (which they haven't ever really heard), but you get comments like "yeah she's hot" or "she's got nice ... you know whats".. Makes me hang my head in my hands every time I hear it. HOWEVER.. No big deal. Maybe one day they'll come to their senses, or at least learn to accept what other people find in their music. I wanted to take a few minutes to welcome all of the newbies who have joined this remarkable list within the last few months. Jewel's popularity has skyrocketed this year, and with that has come many new fans who (luckily for us and them) have found this list to share experiences and adventures. And adventures there have been. And there will be more! (This weekend in San Diego, for example). Steve (GroovyLyme) just shared a *most excellent* adventure meeting and talking with Jewel. One of the best things about that was hearing about how important and meaningful it was to both Steve AND Jewel that he is an EDA. Many of us have become close friends through this list, and more still are and are becoming fans of one another as well as Jewel ( © ® Kookybaka). I can assure you, there are a number of living legends that exist here (some of them even still post occasionally). Alan (Mr. BB) just posted a wonderful capsule history of Jewel. Part of her history is the history of the EDAs, and that is really a quite remarkable thing in itself. (In fact, Mr. BB is coordinating the effort to get that included in the *official* history pages). In my next post (later today), I will explain how the EDAs (really, ONE EDA, and it isn't *puff daddy*) are responible for making Foolish Games a top-charting single in the U.S. even though it hasn't been shipped to stores or sold as a single since early JULY, as a B side for YWMFM. A great thing to do, and I cannot recommend this too highly, is to go back and read the archives of this list, to see who was here and what was going on over the last few years. Some of the key times centered around the key EDA events, such as (since the time I've been here) Jewel's show at the Paradise in Boston in May, '96, Jewelstock (July 18 & 19, '96), Hampton Beach (August, '96), Jewel at Java Joe's on January 3, February 2 and April 11, '97, Lizstock in February, Hot Dog Fest on April 5, the Jewelstock reunion in July, the Campbell's EDA Great Adventure earlier this summer, and the Livingroom Tours. (I'm leaving a lot out, I know). To get to the archives, go to: I also really urge all of us to reread Mike's great nettiquette guide for the list. In my own view, there are certain things that are very frustrating, which are made way worse when list volume is up. (We are all guilty of these things, at one time or another, BTW.) They include redundant "me, too" posts, quoting the entire letter being responded to, multple posts of no possible interest to more than one person on the list, flaming, complaining about the flaming, complaining about the complaint complainers, et al. Rachel, our own wishesshewasa Cornflake Girl, posted an hysterical post a few months back about the kinds of messages found in a list like this; I hope she reposts it, because it's an eye-opener into the more base aspects of what we are and what we do! Anyway, I just wanted to say welcome all to a great list for a wonderful and inspiring artist. tty'all later, - -=-Larry-=- (a.k.a. I went home this summer during my break from school and didnt have any computer connections. I did have a chance to go to the lilith fair in Scranton and Had a terrific time. It was worth the 2 hour trip even though it poured!! Also, I read the entertainment weekly article crticizing Jewel and I wrote a letter in response basically telling the author, mr brown, he has the right to criticize Jewel, but it was obvious by his article that he didnt do his homework on her or the lilith fair. I think I wrote a real good article supporting our favorite gal. Anyone interested in my letter, I'll be glad to send it to you. My favorite song of Jewel's is Absence of fear. i recently got a hold of her Boston performance and I cant stop listening to the song - anyone who has info on why she wrote the song - please let me know! Thanks so much. Also. I'm looking to get a hold of the Temple Ambler show if anyone has it on tape. I have plenty to trade thanks to the great angels on this list.
