She got her break almost two years ago on one mike night at Lee's Palace (Toronto). I actually saw her quite soon after this opening for TPOH (The Pursuit of Happiness) and Claudia's Cage, at that very same place. Here's what I said then: "March 23, 1996 - Lee's Palace: The Pursuit of Happiness - Claudia's Cage - - Dayna Manning I'd never heard of Dayna Manning before, and having no idea what to expect I was happy to learn that she is a reasonable competent tunesmith. She suffered a bit from "sound guy" syndrome, where if the sound was a little smoother, she would have sounded a whole lot better. She's probably not the greatest act you'll ever see, but she's young and shows a great deal of potential and if she happens to get signed, get less introspective, get a good producer and cut a cd, it will certainly sound good! Someone to watch at any rate. " EMI has a good biography on her (oddly for a major label, its even been updated _this_ year (March 1997): http://www.emimusic.ca/artists/DayMa/DayMa.Bio.html I'd see her a few times after Lee's, here and there, sometimes she was great, other times, quite mediocre. But lately, she's been much more consistently good. Originally, just on her own she's added another guitarist and a bassist. It really rounds out her sound, qhich in the early days was often a bit sparse. She's much more confident on stage than that first time I saw her and seems to enjoy herself, which was not the case then, I think there might have been five people listening and it did seem to get to her. Opening before Claudia's Cage, very frantic, very, very loud was likely a daunting task at the time. For South Central Ontario residents there was an interview with her on CKOH TV about two months ago, a few weeks before the Toronto LF at any rate. She seems reasonably together and quite self-assured. She gives good interview. They might replay it sometime, dunno. This statement pretty much sums her up: "In my mind, I'm just a regular person and that's the image I want." - DM Hope this helps! Hi All, Im just going to give my 2 cents in this guitar shpeel. Note: I work in a music store. I know that 99% of my information is fact. That 1% is speculation :) If you want to start off playing guitar, the best is getting lessons w/ a guitar teacher or a friend that lives nearby & has been playing guitar for a couple years(or more that 3 months). At least get somebody who knows quite a bit more than just 1 power chord. If that isn't possible(due to life's schedule or what not) I'd suggest getting a beginner teach-yourself-guitar book & video. At my work, they come together. Ive hear they work quite well. On getting a guitar, Id suggest getting a Classical guitar to start out on. The ok ones that work for starters are about $100. Not great, but the nylon strings won't hurt your fingers as much as starting on a steel string guitar. BTW - a classical has a wider neck meaning you have to stretch your hand a bit more than on a steel string. Getting a guitar tuner would also help start ear training & pitch tuning. This I tell you won't happen over a week, guarenteed! It took me 3 months to learn the basic chords(major & some minor). With my previous years of instrument playing in band, I caught on quickly. After learning that stuff...I'd say you could play most of what Jewel plays. All you need is a capo(a Kyser costs around $20, mine is about a year old, it still works). The cheaper ones can get down to about $5. Before doing that, get a steel string guitar & start working on that. The advantage is the neck is a smaller width, but you have to press on the strings harder. Getting calises does help, but when your hand hurts too much to play. You'd better call it a day so your hand could heal. Thats it from me...to all the Jewel inspired guitarists Im happy for you :) FYI - I got a teacher. Taught from her for 3 months. Heard(don't be too suprised) Hootie & The Blowfish --got into their style. Got sick of Hootie & stuck to Dave Matthews Band -->Dave plays some of the weirdest stuff, but it all fits! I did get the chance to play a bit of Jazz Band for a semester back in HS. Glad I did. Listen to Jazz. The old stuff like mid '60s or listen to a Jazz station once in awhile. "Never Stop Learning" Hope this answers some questions about starting guitar 'Quiet Warrior' Alex BTW- Im not a master, either :) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Sep 1997 00:29:19 -0500 From: luvstar@glossy.com (Amy hou) Subject: to Mike HI!
