Here's my guitar experience; hopefully it helps you out: I bought my first guitar from a pawn shop, $150.00, a Sierra Acoustic 6 string (steal string) - A cheapy. I just made sure the strings were close to the face because some are high up and difficult to play. I made sure it sounded good with the few chords I knew and was easy enough to bar a "F" chord - very difficult to do with a bad guitar! Also, I recommend you pay about $6 bucks more to get some new D'Adario strings, gauge .10, the lightest for beginners. It will ease the pain of tuffening up your finger tips with callouses. Then I bought a guitar learning book, Alfred's Basic Guitar Method 1 & 2 for 6 bucks each. I got throught the 1st. book and learned how to read sheet music, play basic chords, and play corney toons like "Happy B-Day" and "Jingle bells". I also learned from this book the basics like what each funny looking symbol means when reading music etc. I started book two and half way through it, I just took off like an EDA out to see Jewel in concert from there! I began writing my own music, and have mastered Jewel's YWMFM CD and live versions, WWSYS, F.G. and on and on. It's great to be able to play like a pro now. It's only been about 9 months too. I have an electric now, and that thing is so easy to play compared to the acoustic. So I would recommend using the electric to learn, then getting an acoustic later after you have finger strength. The acoustic's are torture on the fingers! I don't know what the laminated top vs. the solid-top guitar thing is all about. Would someone enlighten me on this one? Anyhow, you do need to learn the basics, then just learn by playing other artists music. There are great guitar tab sites you can get free music from and you can and will be learning from the best! From people who have succeeded! You couldn't ask for a better teacher of talent than Jewel! If you are interested in those guitar books that I learned from, just let me know because I don't need them any longer. The Angel that Follows ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Sep 1997 20:26:20 -0400 (EDT) From: ViolntPhem@aol.com Subject: NJC: A Sad Self-Revelation EDA's~ I was told off by someone today. They weren't my friend, just someone who gets her nose into everyone else's business. But she spoke the truth. See, in my school, we have a whole lot of poser people, who love the songs on MTV and the radio and whatever else the "popular" people are listening to. It's basically like the blind leading the naked, following trends just because they're trends. Anyway, I've been very upset lately because I found out that this boy named Bryan and his friends went to the Jewel concert in Lowell, just so they could "stare at her tits and ass." (sorry for the vulgarity). This really made me upset, especially since they had better seats there than I did! So, today I asked Bryan how he enjoyed the songs "Nicotine Love", "Everything Breaks", and "Studies in Love #12", just to be all wise and superior. Well, he got flustered, and simply said that she still had nice tits, and that YWMFM sounded really good. For a long time now, I've just had this negative opinion on people who knew Jewel only for YWMFM. It just makes me very upset that they don't recognize her true capabilities. So, on to my death. This girl, Katie, came up to me and said, "You know, just because people don't know every single Jewel song and barely know POY, you shouldn't assume that they're posers. You CAN be a fan of Jewel and not know her whole life history." So, I sat at lunch alone today, feeling very cold and sheltered and confused. Jewel, this woman whose music I adore, has molded me into who I am today. And, although that does sound drastic, it's true. I agree with most of her opinions and beliefs in life. But I have been a very negative angel, and I feel horrible. I know that instead of hording all of my Jewel music, I should be sharing it with the world and let people listen to what makes me happy. I am selfish. And I can't help it. I don't want it all to lose the sacredness it holds for me. I'm scared that someone will feel the same way as me. Does this sound shallow yet? I feel so awful about this; I never meant to be so greedy. Sometimes I need to remind myself that I am human, and not just an untouchable angel... ~melissa "Traded my wings in for a string of pearls, and the string is all I have left..."~ Jewel ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Sep 1997 21:00:15 -0500 From: luvstar@glossy.com (Amy hou) Subject: HI!
