I have a Charvel 6 and 12 string acoustic that I believe are laminated. And Until you are on stage performing and even sometime then if you like the sound you don't need to spend that kind of money on a guitar. I also agree with starting with an electric. I have been playing for a year now and started on an Acoustic and still only play acoustic. It is much harder to produce barr chords on the acoustic. I just recently purchase an electric guitar and realized that I probably should have started with that. However I am happy I started with the Acoustic it is more appropriate for the music that I am playing. I think the decision really depends on what style of music you are trying to accomplish. If you want the Folk Rock sound of Jewel, Indigo Girls, Dave Mathews type thing then go acoustic, but be ready for a SERIOUS work out on the old hands.. If you like the Eddie Van Halan, SRV type thing the go for the electric. If you already have an electric use it down't waste the money at this point. I've recieved few emails from people who signed up for this distribution. My original goal was simply to see more non-Jewel/EDA musical events happen which was fully realized by the Living Room Tour. However, I'm still wondering what "non-LRT" attendees think. I welcome any feedback, ideas or whatever. I need to know if this project is worth continuing. I'm considering doing another volume of various other San Diego musicians as well as one focusing on the very active Toronto scene. In the meantime, I'm very interested in reading personal reactions, reviews or any feedback whatsoever. If you've recieved these recordings, let me know what you think. I realize this isn't Jewel news, so my apologies for posting this on the newslist too, but many of you are recipients of these tapes & I want your feedback as well. Wishing you all the best! :-) MrBB ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Sep 1997 12:46:46 -0400 (EDT) From: Shawn Eric Mende Subject: [none] Just out of curiosity, are there any Maryland EDA's around? Galinanes) Subject: Guitar and stuff Hey there: Well I've been playing guitar for almost three years now , and I started out with an electric (Aria Pro $400). Electric guitar necks and fretboards are smaller , and are easier for learning to press down the strings , developing chord progressions and beginners phrasing. I found that I needed to learn classical guitar after I was in a situation where somebody handed my a cheap classical , and power chords don't fly on classical. Since then I bought a nice ovation ( $500) , and now I'm playing bass. I think learning the scales (specially modes) in the electric , and the finger picking in the classical has helped me become a better all around player. I actually would suggest not even an acoustic guitar for starters ... I would start out with a classical guitar that run for $200 and a lot less...and if you're content with the guitar results , move up from there. A couple of friends of mine have started with expensive electric guitars , and then 2 months later have felt the need to sell it for they feel guitar isn't their instrument. And without selling out, you have to play to your audience to a degree." While I agree with this, I don't think Jewel plays for her audience. I think that Jewel plays for Jewel, and the fact that a lot of other people enjoy it too is just a nice extra. I sometimes play a little bit, even though I'll never be very good. Most of the time, I don't do it for any reason other than I want to, or maybe because the song needs to be played. I don't mind if people listen, but I never play "for" them. Sorry if that sounded like a flame, I didn't mean for it to. Also, on the same date, C Marks said that he (?) had sent several messages to the board that didn't get posted. If you read the new member's guide, either the one you got e-mailed to you when you signed up, or the one on the new member's guide web page, it tells you that certain sorts of messages won't get posted. If you send one like that, Mike (did I remember that name right?) usually e-mails you back , telling you that your message didn't get posted and why. If you change it, then resubmit it, your message will get up there. Both shows were incredible, Jewel was at top form, her band worked incredibly well with her. Most concert details have already been covered extremely well by Bill B. and Ted B. (hee, Bill and Ted's most Excellent EDA Adventures), so I won't repeat what has already been said. (Hmm, actually there were 2 Bills who posted. :) ) I was amazed at how the crowds sat mesmerized by a lot of Jewel's non-CD songs. And thank you Alan for requesting Everything Breaks! ;) I promise I won't clap so loud the next time Jewel asks for you. ^_^;;; I definitely feel that the best part of the concerts have been the EDA gatherings before and afterwards. At Lowell it was great to hang out again with Alan, Bill, Chris, Dennis, Rachel, Ted, Tessia, and running into Kevin and his daughter (who were at Harborlights), and Mom and daughter whose names I've unfortunately forgotten. ^_^;;; To me it's the EDAs who make these gatherings as wonderful as they are and I wanted to thank you all for yet another great list memory. I definitely hope to see you all again at the next EDA gathering! :) For now, the Butterfly tour is ended and I simply sit here immersed in happy thoughts. :) Take care everyone and until next time!
