About being a better guitarist, I have to give Jewel more credit. Kelly doesn't know how to tune her own guitar, she has her boyfriend do it for her before the show and remains in the same tuning for the whole performance. She tried to tune down once at a Sunday show, but her boyfriend just ended up coming up on stage and doing it for her. She does play well, but again all of her songs are either Jewel songs or sound like Jewel songs. Nothing new, nothing original. Kelly does have a big following; She was extremely popular at Point Loma High in San Diego. Thus, the audience consists of all of her friends and family. When I went to some shows 100% of the audience was not grooving with the music. The show felt like making cameos at high school social events. That is the one aspect I did not enjoy about her shows. There was no apparent passion put into what she was doing. It seemed like she was up there just to do it, and it really proved true through her performance and lack of connecting with the audience and even herself. I did not see any emotion or vulnerability in her music, which is personally something I look for. I think she is ok, but coupled with the fact that, from what I have seen as a bad "rock and roll" attitude, I would not waste $3 to see her again. Another thing that really bothered me about Kelly was the fact that about half of her show consists of Jewel covers, and she only credits Jewel (not Steve Poltz) for YWMFM. Voice. . .very airy voice that really has no power behind it. I kept waiting for her to really rock out with a killer voice (I had heard so much about her from Igor) but it never happened, sounded very droll and uninteresting to me. That's all I have to say about Kelly Hoyer, I am really not a big believer in her musical talents, but like Erick said, if you are in the San Luis Obispo area (Cal Poly) check her out for yourself and maybe you'll come up with some different conclusions of your own. I think there were about ten people there. So then Joy Eden says...."Well then we need to start playin....just the names from the rest of you." I thought that was great. The show was pushed back about 2 hours, so I only saw 4 songs from each of the artists. I told Joy Eden that I had Innerchange with "Jimmy Dean" on it, so she played that first. :) Two beautiful women with amazing voices. Subject: Re: guitar players please read Okay, here's my take. First of all, DON'T go out and buy a $500+ guitar now if you're just starting out. My current electric-acoustic costed @$450, and I've been playing for 8 years and am majoring in music at my college (Lewis and Clark in Portland, OR if any of you care). The guitar does have a laminated top, and I do frequently wish it was solid, but I mostly use it plugged in, and in that situation, the only guitar that will really sound better than every other electric-acoustic on the market is a Taylor (good call Ms. Kilcher). Possibly a Gibson Chet Atkins too, but that's quite a different thing. As far as starting acoustic and then picking up electric, I'd have to vehemently disagree. It's much easier to learn on an electric, and you will therefore be less likely to get discouraged and give up. Then, as you progressively learn chords and scales and such, then, as you so desire, you can pick up an acoustic and work up your finger strength. Plus, you already have an electric. Don't spend money unnecessarily. As far as how to learn, teach yourself chords (start with opens, then move on to barre chords which are a hundred times easier to learn on electric), scales (major, minor, pentatonic, modes), and work on a little ear training, most easily accomplished by listening to songs and trying to figure them out by ear (which will become immensely easier once you know a decent number of chords). Also, teach yourself some theory (get a simple theory book), as this will better help you understand the relationships between notes. My two shiny copper coins. Hope it helped. - -Wayan, the angel who loves his guitar even more than Jewel, but not by much "This was a quote by Sun Ra, but it's really long and I'm lazy" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Sep 1997 00:54:52 -0400 From: N4SIR@webtv.net (Donny Emmert) Subject: POY for sale thanks to everyone who e-mailed me privately....i ran out of my 5 copies that i had..hopefully i can get more if my local record store gets another order in..but i highly doubt it..sorry if you missed out...donny ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #739 ***************************
