Second, I can't understand why people who are "closet" spice fans could be that way about music. Why would you be ashamed about the kind of music you like. It's something along the lines of what Fiona Apple said about images. I never hide the fact that I like something cuz i'm scared of what other people will think of me, I like Hanson, Spice Girls, Prodigy, and if anyone makes fun of me cuz of that it's their problem. Third, the worst thing about being famous must be that people analize every move you make. The second Jewel is on T.V. she has hundreds of people commenting on her makeup, clothes, and every little word she said. It's gotta suck, people being so critical on her . An eloquent and truthful speech on the real and humane side of Jewel that we have lost track with. Seems to me that some EDAs out there have begun to treat Jewel as just another superstar who "looks down at her multitudes" and strives to achieve materialistic and shallow stardom instead of appreciating her fans. They forgot that fame & fortune may not always change a person (like in Jewel's case) but certainly influence the way he/she deals with their surroundings, including fans. They have to; otherwise they'll just be overwhelmed and incapable to adapt to the demands and pressures they face everyday. Jewel has not forgotten the people who put her where she is today, just like she hasn't forget about her parents, brothers, and childhood friends. But that doesn't mean she has to mention them by name everytime she opens her mouth. And she doesn't have to; the people she loves have enough confidence and security to know that she cares about them by heart, anyhow. Are we so insecure about Jewel that we need vocal confirmation to know that she supports us just as we support her? I do hope the debate will subsides. Thanx for the wonderful and insightful post to counter the pessimestic messages that have come up lately. Steven, the Angel from Mars ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 Sep 1997 18:04:44 -0400 From: Gerry Lipnowski Subject: re Jewel conceited Hi everyone, I didn't particularly feel compelled to enter this debate, but I can't let Sean Hooks' comments on this subject go unchallenged. First, let me assure everyone that I enjoy Sean's thoughtful posts, as I have mentioned before, so this is not a flame of him. However, I believe he has exagerated the definition of the word 'conceit' to suit his argument. Among the things Sean said were: "One Jewel is not becoming conceited, she always was even way before she was remotely popular. And two, conceit is not bad, it's what makes her great. Conceit is nothing more than an extreme form of self-confidence without it Jewel would have never made it out of her van. Arrogance is bad, conceit and cockiness is just knowing you are good. " That's just not true, Sean. Any definition of the word conceit indicates quite clearly that it has a negative and self delusional connotation. Webster's says it's "over-estimation of self-vanity" . Random House describes it as "an exagerated estimate of one's own ability, importance", and Oxford defines it as 'having too high an opinion of one's own beauty, ability, etc" or a "far-fetched comparision." I've never seen Jewel display any behaviour that would be consistent with any of these definitions. We've all heard and seen her refer to herself as a 'dork', and worse, in her efforts to ensure that we do NOT hold her in such high esteem that she becomes too distant from us. (Two examples I can think of off the top of my head include her reaction to our birthday present earlier this year, and the note she sent us after last Thanksgiving upon reading our thank you letters for the Jewelstock tapes.) She does not elevate herself above other human beings, nor above what she is genuinely capable of, which is the foundation of conceit. I've seen her say many times that "if I can make my dreams come true, anyone can..." when she describes how little confidence she had in her musical abilities. I certainly concur with Sean that Jewel has a lot of confidence in herself - which she has developed more of as time goes by - - (and being human, a lot of insecurities as well), but not in any proportion that goes beyond her abilities, which is what conceited really means. Sean also wrote: "DEEP WATER In many ways this is Jewel's signature song. It is extremely reaffirming, positive, and hopeful. It is also about the benefits of selfishness and conceit. To believe that you really can overcome things, that you can make it, that you don't have to sacrifice your pride and health, that you are not just like everybody else and that you don't have to just survive that you can achieve, to do that, requires conceit." I must admit, I disagree with Sean's interpretation of this song. The key to the song is that you CAN'T make it in this world with selfishness, because no matter what you can accomplish, "It's nothing without love..." Otherwise, "you wake up making love to a wall"...meaning, you wind up by yourself. Sean makes another point I disagree with. He says: "I have met this woman and believe me she emanates an air of loftiness in that she is above things." Well, I've been fortunate enough to meet her twice, and talked to her at length (poor Jewel....) one of those times, and in both instances, she was very sweet and down to earth, and nothing at all like Sean's experiences. One last comment. Sean concluded by saying: "If she was just an average person like everyone else we wouldn't love her music so much would we?" I don't think the fact that she's an exceptional person has anything to do with her attitude towards herself that Sean describes as "conceited". I've met at various times of my career Nobel Prize winners, political leaders, Olympic medal winning and Hall of Fame professional athletes, among others, and my experience has been that rather than be conceited, it's nearly always the case that the MORE exceptional people are, the more MODEST they are. You don't have to be conceited to be great. And as Sean is an admirer of Nietzsche, let me end with one of my favourite Nietzsche quotes: "There is not enough love and goodness in the world to throw any of it away on conceited people." Just my two cents. As always, thanks Sean for a thought-provoking post. Hae a good evening Sean and all my other fellow EDA's.
