Hello everyone. I'd like to take this quick opportunity to introduce myself and ask a couple of questions (I'll try not to be *too* dumb!). I'm Mike Gray, 17, living near Manchester, England. As a Jewel fan living in the UK, I hadn't actually heard anything much of her until I visited the States a few months ago. On returning, I picked up the "Who Will Save Your Soul" single, followed by the album, then the "new" single "You Were Meant For Me" (I *love* Cold Song & Rocker Girl BTW). I've also picked up the promotional video "An Introduction To Jewel" (which is basically just Jewel talking spliced with the WWSYS video). Apparently she was meant to appear on our National Lottery programme this Wednesday which was cancelled due to the sad death of Princess Diana. Anyway. I started looking around the Jewel web sites to learn more and discovered the list. From what I've seen so far, it looks very good. I have tickets for the Manchester University Debating Hall concert on the 16th of October, and I was wondering a couple of things. 1)Apparently Jewel performs a lot of new (or rare) material along with album tracks. Do the majority of the audience know these songs? 2)How averse is Jewel to concert photographs? I'm planning on taking a camera, as I know the security at the Manchester Uni aren't strict at all - but if the artist objects, they always tell you to stop. (Non-flash, I'll just use 400 speed film) 3)If I get some good photos and get them scanned in, is there anyone willing to host them on their home page? Personally (owing to a hard disk crash yesterday), I've lost all my web publishing tools, and they aren't exactly number one on my list of things to replace. Also if anyone wants to put up a real-audio encode of the MTV Awards performance of "Angel Takes A Ride", I RA encoded it for a friend, so if someone wants it to put up, just mail me privately. 4)I'd like to get hold of some Angelfood because I'd like to know some of the songs that she'll be performing at the concert that aren't easily available. Obviously, being new to this whole thing, I don't have anything to trade - however, I do have quite a bit of Tori Amos if anyone feels like trading for that. Otherwise, if any kind souls out there would be willing to copy me something if I sent them cassettes & international reply coupons to cover postage? (This would have to be *before* the concert, obviously). Thanks for listening. Is it from the last issue of Rolling Stone (one with Tu Wang Clan & Rage.. on the cover) where a (stupid) article that wrote about Lilith Fair described Jewel as "stuck-up" and such? I personally think that writer was biased and not really honest in her "report" of the breakthrough music concert of the summer. >> I am a huge Pearl Jam fan. They don't do interviews that often, especially Eddie Vedder.....Well, about 10 months ago Eddie was on the cover of RS, and it had negative things he and the band said, and did. It even said that they were about to break up. Then about 8 months ago Eddie went to SPIN, and offered them an exclusive interview....they accepted. It wasn't as much an interview as it was just Eddie talkin about things. He didn't come straight out and say that RS made everything up, but he basically corrected everything that was in RS. So I guess the whole point of this is that don't believe everytning you read in RS. There has been lots of discussion lately it seems about Jewel is changing and becoming conceited and stuff like that. Let me let you all in on something then, two things really. One Jewel is not becoming conceited, she always was even way before she was remotely popular. And two, conceit is not bad, it's what makes her great. Conceit is nothing more than an extreme form of self-confidence without it Jewel would have never made it out of her van. Arrogance is bad, conceit and cockiness is just knowing you are good. And Jewel does. In fact, her philosophies imply that she promotes conceit and believes it is essential to changing the world for the better and making it more beautiful. DEEP WATER In many ways this is Jewel's signature song. It is extremely reaffirming, positive, and hopeful. It is also about the benefits of selfishness and conceit. To believe that you really can overcome things, that you can make it, that you don't have to sacrifice your pride and health, that you are not just like everybody else and that you don't have to just survive that you can achieve, to do that, requires conceit. She is exceptional. She is not normal. She is unique. I have met this woman and believe me she emanates an air of loftiness in that she is above things. Above the petty lives that most people live as they wallow in their own shallowness while she is there being herself, enacting change, promoting beauty and goodness. If she was just an average person like everyone else we wouldn't love her music so much would we? Later, Sean Hooks "People must be skilled in living on mountains. I also didn't know all those things about her. I'm new to the list and I'm not as knowledgeable of her. I did go to a concert and she didn't thank the fans. As a matter of fact, she told us all to shut-up and that she didn't even notice whether us folk on the lawn were there or not. That kinda sat badly with me. I admore a LOT of the things she does. She's great. I love it when she sings what's in her heart, not what she's supposed to do. Example, VMA. I can understand that she might not take the award seriously, but I think it's an honor. We all know that a piece of her music is being honored by that award. If her music wasn't great, she wouldn't be up there. Honestly, I think she's one of the most geniune artists out there. And, most talented. She inspires my music and a lot of my friends who write. It just seemed odd that this great person was telling people to shut up and saying the award was silly. I apologize if anyone thinks I'm out of line. Especially since I now know that I didn't have all the information. I love Jewel almost as much as all of you. Sorry. JIM ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Sep 1997 17:21:28 -0400 (EDT) From: BluClouds@aol.com Subject: NJC: Friendships There is this whole decency thing when it comes to friendships. You don't say "yeah we are friends" and then treat them some other way. If you aren't going to stick by your word, then you shouldn't have said you would in the first place...you are just an asshole otherwise. I have come up with a few situations like this lately. I think that being friends with someone means being there for them, being honest, loyal, caring, helping them when they are in need, trusting them and being trusted by them, etc. etc. It does not mean acting like someone you aren't, it doesn't mean ignoring your friend, especially when things aren't going well for them as it is. It doesn't mean lying to them. You don't put on this whole facade of who you are, trying to make everyone think differently about you...why should you pretend like that? They only find out later and see what kind of person you truly are and all they do is end up hating you...why would anyone want that? Do people honestly want to be hated? Some people need to start thinking about who they really are. It's terrible how all you ask of someone is their friendship and they can't even give that to you. It is now rescheduled for Sept. 21. Same time, about 4-5 p.m. It was rescheduled so all of you and we could attend Jewel's show at Hospitality Point in San Diego. We can all meet early down there Saturday and have lunch somewhere or a picnic and then head over to the concert. If a picnic sounds good we can maybe combine it with Crazy Lora's, is it birthday?, party in Ocean Beach. Afterwards some can head back to Lora's as it is a two day party or you can follow us back up to our house or maybe even a shorter drive to Nancy's parents' house. They may be out of town and we can use the house as a resting point before heading up here. Here are directions again. Take the 5 to Capistrano Beach in between San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano. Get off at Camino De Estrella from the south turn right, from the north turn left over the bridge. Then turn left at El Molino, just passed the Unocal station. Two stop signs and turn left at Calle Juanita. Go passed Sunset Park and turn left on to Calle Carmelita Address: 34445 Calle Carmelita Capistrano Beach, Ca 92624 714 443-3623 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 07 Sep 1997 14:31:13 +0000 From: tom morales Subject: Re: Jewel conceited??? Jewel is definitely all those things and does not abuse others with these characteristics. They are only flaws when you use them the wrong way and I've yet to see Jewel do that anywhere.
