Tara looked very healthy but it was a throat kinda thing ya know? She was _very_ sweet in singing autographs and posing in pictures and I got to talk to her about her hair and she said to me "Your name means beautiful in Spanish doesn't it?" and I was like "Wow!" which is sooo cool because not many people know that... She signed my CD - Love & Light and that all in itself is wonderful.. hey she even gave me a hug.. And i got to interact wit her about colds and how i had one in the morning and i couldn't sing.. and how I knew how it felt.. ANd i just realized now that one of the posters I took down of her has a devils mustache on it.. that's just way too cruel... Of course tho.. there's always a bti extra stuff right? I got to catch the last 2 songs of the Tanya/Juliana show at IRving Plaza.. Didn't see juliana.. just tanya do "feed the tree" and some other song.. really cool.. got these purty gladiolas ;) And someone said to Mr. GroovyLime thru a cab car "Do you got any cigarettes?" and i was commenting about how sad it is that kids are smoking these days and the kid said "You got a problem with that?" and i said "Yeah, I have a problem with your cynicism" and i was preaching happy hippy love love stuff :) it was so cool... But I had a great time.. as always.. walked away with 4 CDs and I only spent 12 bucks.. great eh? :) But i'm sneezing up a bejesus storm here so take care all.. glad you all had fun, those who went lotsa love and huggles - -linda the lovable angel ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 07 Sep 1997 01:17:39 +0000 From: Burkeman Subject: Toledo show review Wow, just got home from Toledo's Zoo Ampitheatre in what was by far the most bizarre Jewel show in a while for me... well here's the setlist off the bat. 0. Is it from the last issue of Rolling Stone (one with Tu Wang Clan & Rage.. on the cover) where a (stupid) article that wrote about Lilith Fair described Jewel as "stuck-up" and such? I personally think that writer was biased and not really honest in her "report" of the breakthrough music concert of the summer. I remember Jewel said in an interview (forgot the source) that goes something like this: "I don't think of myself as a phenomenon; I see the things that happened to me as phenomenon." I believe that whatever degree of success Jewel might achieve in the future, she will always have her two feet firmly rooted in the ground. Here's a re-post: Bayside Jewel show a benefit, but benefiting what? By George Varga POP MUSIC CRITIC September 5, 1997 San Diego singer-songwriter Jewel regards her music as a source of hope and inspiration, and as a means for establishing common ground between her and her listeners. So it's not surprising that Jewel's Sept. 20 Hospitality Point concert at Mission bay is a benefit for an organization called Common Ground. But just what Common Ground is, and her involvement with it, remains unclear. "I think it's a charitable group Jewel is starting, but I'm not sure," said concert promoter Bill Silva, who is staging the benefit here. "I don't have any information about it," Rick Roskin, Jewel's booking agent, said yesterday from New York. A Los Angeles spokeswoman for Jewel's record company, Atlantic, said the label didn't know anything about Common Ground either. Jewel's manager, who was with the singer in New York for last night's MTV Music Video Awards, did not return phone calls. What is known is that the Common Ground Jewel is lending her name to is not affiliated with either Illinois-based Common Ground -- USA, which "promotes justice and prosperity through taxation of land values rather than labor," or Common Ground Network for Life & Choice, a Virginia organization devoted to lowering the rate of unwanted pregnancies. It is also known that tickets for the benefit, Jewel's first major show here since a sold-out April 4 gig at UCSD's RIMAC Arena, will go on sale at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Ticketmaster. Tickets are priced at $39 for gold circle seats, $25 for orchestra seats and $19 for lawn seats. For more information, call (619) 220-TIXS. - -----Taken from the San Diego Union Tribune 09/05/97----- I've called almost every major Southern California music source about the event and, still, no one is very clear about it. It's obviously for a worthy cause and, by the looks of it, EDA's will be in mass quantity. So everyone in the area - or if you're Kris Kane and Larry Greenfield and attend concerts a half-a-world away (who, I'm sure, are going) - then, please do make plans for it. I've seen her perform countless times and she never performs better than she does in San Diego. See you there. Why must we second-guess everything that that she does and not just let things be as they are? I got some news for y'all, no artist at the VMA's thanked their fans. Not the Spice Girls, not Puff Daddy, not Beck, nobody. And yet we come down on Jewel. Why? Is it because we as EDA's feel a special bond and closeness to Jewel that we don't feel towards other artists and thus are more sensitive to certain things that she does? Well that is understandabl. I feel a bond to Jewel like I haven't felt for any other artist before or since, and it is precisely because of that bond that I cut her some slack and try not to second guess every little thing that she does. The video awards are just a piece of tin given out for the video, not the artist but the video. What did we, as fans of Jewel, do to contribute to the success of the video. Nothing. That is why it is "silly", because the artist is being awarded for what is basically a 5-minute commercial that the artist usually has little or nothing to do with creatively. Where we come in, as fans, is when we buy the albums, singles and attend the concerts. And for that Jewel is EXTREMELY appreciative. I have not been to one Jewel concert where she has not thanked the fans for coming to her concerts and buying her albums for if not for us, she would not be where she is today. What other artists would take the time to sign autographs and meet the fans after concerts? Not many, but Jewel does. What other artists put on private concerts for their internet mailing lists? Not many, but Jewel did. What other artists offer free distribution of their unreleased tunes for their fans? Again not amny, but Jewel does. What other artists inspire thier fans to rally around a worthy, yet untrumpeted cause like Jewel did for the JPK fund? Again, not many. Jewel is unique in that she has given us as her fans so much and a lot more than she really has any right to. But she does it because she truly loves us and appreciates us. So the next time Jewel forgets to thank us at an awards show, or fails to come out for an autograph signing because she is tired, try to cut her a bit of slack. After all, Jewel is sensitive, and she'd like to stay that way. Peace, Jeff :) ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #707 ***************************
