If any of you have closed captioning on you tv, you can get the text from this, but I will try to help out with these little things for those who don't. Chris Rock said "This next artist has albums everywhere. I got one out of a box of cereal." Sorry, Jewel is not on a cereal box at present as some may have thought :-( What Jewel said before performing "Angel standing by:" "I was supposed to sing "Foolish Games" tonight but I wanted to sing a song that I thought was about mercy and love and our ability to understand. It's called "Angel standing by."" I thought it was really cool that Jewel did not see this as a stage to promote her latest single, but play for the moment. She does not believe in set lists and the gal walks the walk...gotta love her. Another thing I would like to point out is the Marilyn Manson performance...did anyone else ever see that Beavis & Butthead episode where they use the eye patches as atheletic supporters? I don't think Mr. Manson was trying to invoke a laugh, but I sure had one :-) A very happy EDA, Jason ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Sep 1997 01:21:17 -0400 (EDT) From: ToxicSlush@aol.com Subject: HEY ALL VERY IMPORTANT Does anyone know how I could get tickets to the SNL show when Jewel is preforming. Gerrit! James is doing well...aside from some family probs. There are some personal probs that I could share over the phone, but not essential. Anyway, his health is looking up. The big tasks ahead are getting Medical to hurry up and approve 8 more weeks of therapy. The prob is that they only approve 8 weeks at a time. Then, he has to get approval, which has taken over 8 weeks now...bureaucratic BS. So, the progress he had made and the strength he had gained are basically in vain for the most part. You know? The way he explains it is like this: when they stand him up on the machine, he can stay up for about 80 seconds before getting dizzy, and then they have to lay him back down. Over the course of about 4 weeks, with therapy every other day, he can increase his "standing" time by almost 20 minutes! BUT...when you get out of "practice" and he has the hiatus due to waiting for a signature, he starts therapy again, and the "standing" at about 120 seconds....takes away from substantial progress. If they would get to this shit in a timely manner, he could be well on his way to walking. It's very frustrating. I learned something interesting yesterday when talking to him about it...I had assumed that in order for him to walk again, he would have to regain feeling in the lower portion of his body; this is not COMPLETELY true. He informed me that you can actually learn to walk, although it is VERY difficult, without feeling your legs. He noted a guy in his therapy classes that walks now without having any feeling whatsoever in his legs/feet. I thought that was interesting, and encouraging. Which brings about a greater deal of motivation on his part, and mine, to help him workout and continue to pursue those exercises and activities that will make walking a reality for him. And that brings me back to the problem of waiting for the paperwork to get done, so that he can get back into the therapy that is vital to his recovery. We went to the Padre game tonight and had a blast. His spirits are up. He does have a doctors appointment next week where they will be running some tests. They think he may have kidney stones, and a serious bladder injury that they didn't see earlier. So, everyone, keep their fingers crossed. I will depart now. Have fun! Take care! Hope you get the glitches worked out at work! Mandy ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Sep 1997 01:38:58 -0700 From: henry.park@juno.com (Henry S Park) Subject: a concert experience . . . I will try to make this as short as possible, but there is information that some of the newer EDA's might be interested in that will help to continue to carry out Jewel's wishes regarding this remarkable young man. Originally, we were introduced to James through a message from Jewel. The list was pondering various Birthday present ideas for Jewel when she (through an EDA) informed us of James Kalanick. Apparently, she had been handed a letter explaining how a young man had been hit by a car that resides in Pacific Beach, where Jewel lived for the time prior to her success. It was a hit and run that left James quadrapalegic. She asked us to please do some fund raising for him instead of using our ideas/talents/money to buy her a gift; after all, helping others is the essence of being an EDA, and Jewel's message to us all. So, this wonderful group that you are a part of, bound together on various occasions, and helped to raise money to help pay for a van and other medical expenses that are incurred with such an injury. The original fundraiser involved selling raffle tickets at $1 a piece, which went into a trust fund that has been set up for James. People on the list contributed various Jewel and other merchandise to raffle off. Amazingly, the EDA's raised about $27,000 collectively; which was enough to purchase a van to at least take James places (originally, we had hoped to raise $40,000 for a van that he could later learn to drive himself so that he could work and carry on a more normal life). At any rate, this was quite a success that has spanned many others like this. Through all of this, I have become very close to James. I would consider him my best friend in many ways. And I can tell you personally, that the cost of being disabled in the ways that he is can be quite financially exhausting. Just to give you an idea: the original medical bills in just the first three months of his injury (he has been injured over a year now) was over $400,000. His wheelchair cost $8,000. The medicine that is not covered by Medical runs about $4500 a month. And the medical supplies, just the ones that allow him to go the bathroom, cost over $200 a DAY. As you can see, this is just a SMALL fraction of the costs just to survive and deal with the tasks that you and I take for granted. So, I am asking everyone again, and for the newbies that may want to get involved now that weren't here at the beginning of meeting Jewel's request...let's see what else we can do. I have about 20 pictures, great quality of Jewel taken professionally that I am willing to raffle off. We will set this up the same way we did before...each raffle ticket is $1. I will give details of the account to send checks to...and a list of merchandise up for grabs within the next week or so...and then we will set a time limit. If anyone has any other ideas, or anything they are willing to donate, please email me privately. Thanks everyone for your help! Well, Im out here in CA & watched most of the MVA show. I would have to agree that Chris Rock didn't do such a good job at hosting then stand-up. I would have punched him if I had the chance cause his jokes were*flat* horrible. Thats as far as Im getting w/ that :) The never-cease-to-be-wierd-Manson I didn't watch Manson's performance & from the reaction I did a smart move. BTW, when Im going to school(college) I always have to take the freeway & durring rush hour(8am) which pretty much bits...Blah, blah...Kevin & Bean(two morning radio show hosts) were in NYC & talked to the marching band leader(drum major I think) of the HS band that performed w/ Manson. Just listening to this kid brown nose his answers about getting to perform w/ Manson made me want to miss out on such an unduplicated performance. Basically Im saying that just *listening* to a participant of Mansons performance got me wanting to miss that part of the show. About our fav. & original EDA - Jewel Impressive to say the least. I thought her look was very different than what I was expecting(of course that could be anything) Straight hair parted down the middle w/ a black dress skirt(somebody help me out here-is that right?). I thought it was really cool that she pulled a rabbit out of her bag of trix(the little Atlantic arguments about the FCS release) & played 'Angel Standing By' instead of 'Foolish Games'. I personnally think that FG is getting its deserved airplay, Im just getting kinda tired of hearing it *everywhere* I go. Guess this proves that Jewel does have a voice in Atlantic calling the shots. :) Also want to Cograd her on getting the Female Video Award. This time she won, last time -wasn't she just nominated? BTW - want to thank Derek(the Canadian Angel) again for being so generous in taping the I&I show *plus* taping for 21 other EDAS *Whew!* To Lora's party I go --15 days till a weekend of fun!! Woo-hoo!! Gotta go to that concert Sept. 20th....gotta gotta gotta :P FYI - I had to go to the doctor to get my right foot(big toe) worked on today. Last night after watching Jewel perform I tapped it against a shoe on the floor & ...kinda gross. Anyway, her performance was running through my head I the pain went away :) Talk about memorable performances!! Thats it 15 days and counting! Woo-Hoo!!
