There were so many people outside that building!! i see the EDAs were represented because in the very begining i can see someone trying to hold up an blue EDA T-shirt! =) Also a sign behind Jewel saying something like "Your my Everyday...." or "Im your everyday...." Something like that! If you were at I&I please email ME personally! I would love to hear some stories about that!! =) Her Replies to questions were nice and meaningful and the host was getting tooo much pleasure out of it! You can tell by the way he was touching her and looking at her when she talked. =P Got a little jealous when they asked Jewel about CanAlien fans are better cause they llisten to her lyrics. Please if you were there email me =) The setlist of Jewel's was good. Lots of stuff on the PoY album. Was great to hear Don't and Last Dance Rodeo again. Plus Satellite, Morning Song and Deep Water. I always get hyped cause Jewel dedicated Deep Water to us. Look for an Audio Ver of I&I soon. It is very hard to make audio of that because theres live music that blends in with Album music. She has said before that she wants to get into other mediums. I think that she should get a supporting role first, but thats my opinion. She might want to try and get a lead, and that would be fine too. Remember, its what she wants, not what we want her to do. As for alantic records, I think they should put out an EP or something like that to tide us over until the next album. Too bad she isn't coming to the west coast anytime soon, I'd like to see her live again. Also, if haven't already, a moment of silence for Princess Diana, she was a good person, who shouldn't ahve been taken like that. I just am not a very forward person and didnt feel like approaching you since I was with my sister at the concert. Anyway, as for the show, here's the setlist with comments. I'm Sensitive-eh, slipped up a little on one verse, "cute" version, nice annunciation on the lyrics though Little Sister-I personally am a little tired of this one but hey its ok Near You Always-same Daddy-with full story, powerful as usual, included new lines about the Cosby Show and dating shady characters 1,000 Miles Away-with Zen Motorcycle story, loses a little of that soft power in such a large venue Pieces of You-again, too much album material Jewel, come on girl Deep Water-thats more like it, preceded by speech about how if she can do you can too so dont give up, still powerful and makes me think BAND ENTERS Morning Song-eh, could do without it, she smiled throughout this one though Who Will Save Your Soul-music a bit above her voice for most of it, it seemed a perfunctory performance the crowd much more into it than Jewel Been Down So Long-totally new reincarnation of this song, really rocks, excellent Down-first time I've heard this one, also very driving and powerful musically especially the percussion, Jewel seems to enjoy really grinding this one out Dancing Barefoot-an OK Patti Smith song done well by Jewel and the band Carnivore-with David Baeyerwald on guitar, this song cant be bad, awesome song awesome live, packs so much punch You Were Meant For Me-to me this will never be a good song, Jewel tried some sing alongs that worked mediocre-ly at best Foolish Games-the lounge act with her crooning over the mic and no guitar, thought I wouldnt like it, totally opposite, she walked out to the edge of stage and wrenched in agony as she powerfully pounded through this song verbally really nailing the important lines in ways that make the radio version look like the weak song that it is compared to such a powerful emotive recital of a brilliantly written song END OF SET, ENCORE FOLLOWS Passing Time-wow, I guess my favorite song of the night despite the yelling and high pitched female screaming at times, perfect encore song the music on this one is so eery and moving, so was Jewel with the lyrics, excellence Angel Standing By-Jewel asks crowd to be quiet before the song and that means no screaming girls, the typical lullabye song otherwise Don't-Crowd was loud again, this song lacks the same things that had hurt earlier 1,000 Miles Away, sincerity and a quiet silent venue for Jewel Chime Bells-good ending song for such a huge venue, after first verse she put down the guitar and led a clap along as she sang, the "kiss" was ommitted :( but otherwise the song rocked and left everyone upbeat and happy(which I of course didnt like, I wouldve liked a second encore of Amen but the crowd was too hyped and loud anyways) COMMENTS Jewel seemed in fine mood and commented twice about how tonite's crowd was better than last night's in Boston. So Jewel, if that is so, how come they got the better setlist!!! They got Satellite, Stranger, SIBTW, Last Dance Rodeo, Fly to Me Angel, and Nikos. Another big criticism I have of Jewel in NJ tonite was that the whole show her whole set lasted barely and hour and a half, maybe ever closer to 1:20. I dont think 1:45 is asking too much is it????? But overall considering the enormous size of the Arts Center for a folk artist like Jewel and despite that I wouldve preferred different songs, this was after all is said and done a good show, not a disappointment like the Beacon shows I attended in March. So I give Jewel a lot of credit. The crowd of course was annoying but most was coming from the back and lawn and usually did not obscure words or ruin songs. But god I still cannot wait for her popularity to fade fade fade. By the way: She dueted on David Baeyerwald's third to last song called Stupid Smart or something like that, she looked really really really cool coming out in a long black and grey trenchcoat/robe with a funky light blue fishing hat. For her set she wore a nice print blouse over a low cute black t shirt and the same brown pants with black shoes. So again, in the grand sense of things it was satisfying, I cant pick the setlist, but could we please please play longer Jewel???? Thats all from me for now. I was one of many EDAs who feel that the delay and postponement of Jewel's second album was a decision made by the executives from Atlantic Records, not from Jewel. What made me suspicious about the possible puppeteering on AR's part is the rumor I heard about Jewel publicly complained about the constant delay for the release date of her follow-up album. From this information it seems apparent that Jewel does not have control over the direction of her career, but her record company does. If Jewel indeed has the creative control and freedom over her music and wanted to record a replacement for the one she produced over a year ago, I'll be happy to wait the release of her second album...whenever it may come out. I saw a post about a Jewel Concert at Penn State on September 8th, and I'm wondering how I could get tickets...I saw someone had posted that they're $22 for PSU students and $24 for Non-PSU students.. What's the story with that b/c my dad said he could take me...He took courses at main campus a few years ago and knows where it is. I know there's several campuses(or maybe it's "campi"), but I'm guessing it's at the main campus. Do I go through the ticketmaster, or do I go through some department at Penn State? Please help :) Thank you :) Seth Fulmer A.K.A. I was watching the news last night and heard that she had been in a serious car accident and that Dodi Al Fayed and another person were dead, but never expected Princess Diana to die!! It's amazing how fast someone's life can come and go... I'm not a religious person by any means, but it would be nice for everyone to pause for a moment and pray for Princess Diana, the other two men killed in the crash, and especially poor William and Harry. I want to see the original Penn directed version really bad. I've only seen a few seconds of it on that CBS special before the grammy's awhile back. Is the re-mix of the song from that video available anywhere? From what I heard, it sounded like a kick ass version. OK, I'll shut up now. - --Ryan M. Tara MacLean show review coming soon :) Toledo Blade, Sunday August 31, 1997- Arts & Entertainment section MUSIC "Jewel continues to polish sparkling music career" BY DAVID YONKE Jewel Kilcher doesn't want to be put on a pedestal. "People look at me in magazines and feel I'm a phenomenon, as if what I've accomplished is beyond their ability," she told one interviewer recently. "I tell them to knock it off. If you respect what I've done, then go do something yourself." What Jewel has done is blaze her own trail to stardom, starting at her family's 800-acre homestead near Homer, Alaska, and leading to the national spotlight as a concert headliner and multi-platinum recording artist. The 23-year-old singer-songwriter, who performs a sold-out concert Saturday night at the Toledo Zoo Ampitheatre, has connected with millions of fans who appreciate the emotional honesty and intensity of her music. She was one of the top names on the highly successful Lilith Fair tour, the summer festival featuring an all-female lineup, she appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone in May, and has been featured on all the prestigious network shows, from The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Rosie O'Donnell Show to Saturday Night Live and Good Morning America. Jewel's latest album, "Pieces Of You," has sold more than 5 million copies and spent more than 16 weeks in the Top 10 of Billboard magazine's album chart. It wasn't a quick ride to the top, however. "Pieces Of You" was released on Feb. 28, 1995, but didn't crack the Billboard album chart until April, 1996- 64 weeks later. Within a month after that, however, the CD had sold a million copies. Jewel's breakthough song was the plaintive "Who Will Save Your Soul," which she said was inspired by an episode of people-watching. "One of my favorite things to do is sit and watch people walking by. I remember the details of what people look like- their expressions, their posture, their words. I make up their lives to be tragic or boring or brilliant or normal." Jewel developed her vivid imagination while growing up in the family's Alaskan homestead. Not only was there no television, but there was no shower and the only bathroom was an outhouse. Her parents were musicians, and Jewel begain joining them onstage when she was 6. Her yodeling routine was a real crowd pleaser. After her parents got a divorce some years later, Jewel traveled with her father for the next seven years, performing in bars and nightclubs. "After my parents got divorced, I started writing poetry a lot because I didn't always know how to express myself," Jewel said. "That, to me, is the real beauty of writing. It makes you more intimate with yourself." She won a partial vocal scholarship to the Interlochen Fine Arts Academy in Michigan, where she spent her junior and senior years of high school. "My two years there were a turning point. I saw a bigger world," she said. "I immersed myself in everything- drama, dance, sculpture, music." Jewel moved to San Diego to be with her mother after graduation, but felt restless. "I had no desire to go to college but also felt to peace in travelling or just bumming around," she said. "I got a number of dead-end jobs. Got fired a couple of times. I was frightened and depressed. The idea of spending my life in a 9-to-5 job made me feel trapped and hopeless." She said she lived in her van for a while, existing on a diet of carrots and peanut butter. In between surfing and poetry-writing, she began playing guitar and singing in San Diego coffee shops. She got a job performing weekly at the Innerchange Coffeehouse, and the audiences steadily grew. With every show a sell-out, record executives began to take notice. Several major labels courted her until she decided to sign with Atlantic. Jewel's latest release is the single, "V-12 Cadillac," featured in a collection called "Music for Our Mother Ocean, Vol. II." Proceeds from the album sales will go to the Surfrider foundation, a nonprofit organization that works to protect the oceans. "When I was living in my car, I prayed every night that I'd get to live my dream, and that by me living my dream, people would remember theirs," Jewel said. Jewel performs at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Toledo Zoo Ampitheare. The concert is sold out. - ---------------------- just sorta interesting. I think he actually had all of his facts right.
