It was on the list within 2 days--I would have posted it but I was away from the computer for a few days. It was very big news here, there was a huge story on Grandma Kilcher in the paper. Jewel was on her way home (to Alaska) when her Grandma passed away--it was so sad. She performed two sold-out shows in Anchorage on Sunday and Monday, July 13&14. She was presented the "Key to the city of Anchorage" while she was here. Jewel went home to Homer Monday night after the show to spend some quiet time with family and to attend the funeral. The songs Jewel did at her shows were her very melancholy songs, you could just tell she was very sad. I've read that total artist and performer royalties for your average retail CD is around 2 bucks. I'm not completely certain if that is before or after recoupable fund adjustments. (Recoupable funds basically refer to the company expending the money to send you somewhere on promotion, or something. They pay, but the money is deducted out of future royalties, so you end up paying after all. The only plus is that they risk the money, not you, if the record doesn't sell. Since a lot of people would rather see a 3-D yearbook printed out to have as their own rather than an online yearbook site, we decided to work on it. What I need is anyone who would ever consider buying this EDA yearbook, please e-mail with "I'll Buy a Yearbook" in the title. I'm aware of all the faults of this project, yes, but I'm also aware of all the lovely benefits, ya know? Okay, so I got the lowest yearbook prices possible.. let me post.. If we had 600 EDA's want to buy a yearbook and it was about 92 pages in length, the cost including shipping of each book would be around 12-14 dollars. But if we have 100 EDA's wanting to buy a yearbook, the cost would rise to about 38-40 dollars per book. That's a little bit much I think, so I'm going to try and see how many of you would buy this book. Of course this idea is just in the idea, lightbulb stages. We'll need to collect the original photographs from all the major EDA events as pictured on CrashBoy's page, but only the ones that are "worthy enough" for the yearbook. We'll also need someone to design the cover. (Dennis Harris, don't you do a lot of that graphic art work?) Please, I hope you're all going to be supportive of this, and there's definitely room for newbies, because You can send in your own pictures, and try to make it to the meets, etc... I'm sure any problems there are we can smooth over. Please email me back for information and confirmation that you'd possibly buy the yearbook. thanks - -linda the lovable angel spice@castle.carsey.net ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Aug 1997 00:48:44 -0500 (CDT) From: Quang La Subject: Anyone want to trade? With lack of new CDs, I was desperately trying to find something to listen to on the radio. However, all I came across were the same old hollow, tin-sounding songs that are the remnants of the "alternative rock" of the early eighties. Frustrated, I reached towards my stereo to push in a much-used tape. =) Then, all of a sudden, the beggining cords of Foolish Games filled my truck with resonance and clarity. As I relaxed, I began to sense a side of Jewel's music that often escapes those of us that have been fans for a very long time. Jewel's music is different. It harbors an emotion and a purpose that is extremely rare in today's new found spur of female pop. =) More than that, it is becoming better and better. The current radio version of Foolish Games, and especially the live versions, are much more complete than the POY version. As Jewel goes back into the studio, re-recording past and new material, she is evolving musically, adding harmonies and melodies that she never dreamed of two and three years ago. She is adding piano, cello, and percussion to all the places where they are meant to be. =) If I look back to the Who Will Save Your Souls and You Meant For Me, it is apparent that they do not the wisdom and time that Foolish Games now displays. Following in these steps, I can't wait to see what she will do with older favorites such as Don't and 1000 Miles. No matter how much I would like to see the 'rocker-girl' side that Jewel put on at Jewelstock, her strength is in her ballads. And as Jewel evolves with her new-found resources and goals, this music will become stronger, going to places that few female (or male) talents have gone. =) I am happy to hear her re-record and change her music. It allows each song to reach its full potential. We've already got all her material; now we get to see it evolve. Impatience will only bring imperfection. From what I have witnessed of Jewel in the last two years, imperfection is not a word in her vocabulary. Instead she will seek a fullness to her music that has only been tasted thus far. Anyone that has seen Jewel live recently or will be soon, can witness the incredible power that her performances have taken. =) Sure, it would be nice to see her again in a coffee shop with thirty other people, but as for me, I want the breath-taking magnitude and raw emotion of what Jewel is doing right now. When I watch the sincerity and intensity with which people sing along to Foolish Games, I realize that Jewel is making exactly the impact for which she set out to make. She is taking the world by storm, with love and fearlessness! =) Be an Angel Every Day! Granted that other bands deserve a chance too, but don't you think their fans are doing the same thing? Let's not be naive about this. Besides that, don't you think Jewel deserves to win? She, after all, in this day and age of electronic i.e. Prodigy (which I love), are a breath of fresh air. I don't know about you, but to me, a singer and just their one instrument is pure talent. There's no distortion to cover up mistakes, there's no shouting to cover up flat notes get my picture? I am not saying that these people are not talented, on the contrary, they are, but when stripped down to the basics, you have to wonder what they sound like. There are many musicians/singers who use singing machine s out there to help out their singing. You think Jewel needs that? Of course not. Anyways, like I mentioned above, I think Jewel is one of the most talente d performers out today and I think she deserves to win something. Y'know, after all that, I remembered that I should be talking about videos. Oh well, my bad:) - -Jeff- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Aug 1997 17:59:10 -0400 (EDT) From: Dmon951@aol.com Subject: NJC: trying to find an angel . . . uhh . . . so I am looking for an ex-list member, Tali . . . ex because her AOL account no longer exists . . . it used to be chimebell. . . anyway . . . This eliminates a major cost and hassle when coming to tape trading. THE MAIL. Anyone interested email back comments criticism of this idea. I'm looking for just about anything seeing as that I only have 2 shows. I can trade blanks or other artists or whatever. Hi y'all, Well, long-time list member Adam Longfellows' award winning "Pieces Of Jewel" web site has nailed down another top award! :) It has been named by the Point/Lycos as a Top Website. This is THE most prestigious one, not to mention the fact that ONLY 4 other music sites presently have this commendation. He can't rest on the ol' laurels though, it must be kept up to standards to maintain this merit. Considering he's constantly adding to it, and is soon to unveil the "New & Improved" Performance Chronology, that likely won't be a problem. I know it's hard to believe the Performance Chronology can be any better, but wait until you see this! :) This is really kewel, as Jewel can now boast that she has a "Top 5% Internet Website" about her :) This distinction is distributed to CNN Technology and media world wide, and a review of his site (we are not sure by whom exactly) will be out within a week. When I get it I'll post it :) Adam's amazing site can be viewed right here: http://home.sprynet.com/sprynet/xenomorph/jewelmn.htm Mike P.S. Down there they are just getting to know Jewel and she is becoming popular fast. I was watching Fox(its a diffrent channel then we have) and they played YWMFM, but it wasn't the steve polth video. She is was in a trailer(or something like it) cutting pictures and putting them on the wall. Their was also another girl. She had the haircut like in WWSYS, so I am assuming it was Sean Penn video. In the end all it said was Jewel and Atlantic Records. Does anyone have info????? Victoria a newer angel ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #675 ***************************
