In VH-1's own website it has a brief discussion on the CBC documentary on Lilith Fair, this summer's hottest all-female concert tour. VH-1 notes that the televised special on this one-of-a-kind extravaganza featuring such notable female singer/songwriter such as Sarah McLachlan, Fiona Apple, and JEWEL :) will be coming to VH-1 in the near future. However, it will NOT be from the CBC production but instead it will be a separate documentary done by the film crews of VH-1 who followed the festival all summer long. Keep your eyes peel for any upcoming info, and don't forgot to share it with your fellow EDAs when you got the schedule for feature presentation on this wonderful look at the Lilith Fair and its memorable performances! :) Steven, the Angel from Mars ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Aug 1997 02:01:10 -0400 (EDT) From: PucaFddlr@aol.com Subject: Re: Still need tix... It's Shelly, still here in California! I was fortunate enough to spend a lot of time with Steve in the last few days. We talked extensively about his solo album. He begins recording tomorrow (Monday) in L.A. I've never seen him so excited about his music before. Jewel will be singing on the album also. They will be doing "My Body is Changing" and "Impala" for sure. John Castro and Stinky will be joining him in the studio tomorrow to do some back up, but the majority of the album will be just Steve. He does have a couple of guitarists with whom he has never played with before, joining him also. Some other songs on the album will be "Welcome Home" and "All the Folks" two new songs that he wrote recently, "Broken Hearts", "Good Morning I Miss Waking up With You", "Kicking Distance", and possibly "Grandpa's Song". He is having a hard time choosing which songs to use because he can only have twelve. It's been hard for him to narrow down the choices. He said everyone he talks to says "Hey, well make sure you put this song or that song on". I told him that he should do a double CD set! Then he wouldn't have to be so choosy. He asked me what the EDA's were saying about the album, and he was pleased to hear that everyone was excited. The album will be released late January/early February. He is very intrigued by the whole Living Room Tour concept so don't be surprised if he makes a visit to your neighborhood!! I will be filling you in more as he gives me more information. But it looks like he'll be touring in early January after the New Year. In fact, I convinced him to come to the LRT in LA last night so he could see how things were run. He absolutely loves the idea because he really hates playing in bars. He's been doing it for 15 years and he's ready for a change. He feels he has a lot to offer as a singer/songwriter and is ready to play for people who are there to listen to his music, not to get drunk. He's been sober for 28 days, YEAH STEVE!! He's doing really well and he looks and sounds so much healthier! So start looking forward to the album, it's going to be incredible. Beware though, it's not going to filled with songs like "Dick's Automotive" this album is very mellow and is a reflection of the kind of music that Steve enjoys writing and playing now! I leave tomorrow, boo-hoo!!! I Don't wanna!!! I'll fill you in with the rest of my adventures when I get back to Toledo. I'll be so bored that I'll have nothing better to do but sit and write! =( Love you all- Shelly ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Aug 1997 02:21:20 -0400 From: Crunch Subject: Re: Sorry Angels...actual quotes from the list Spyrylz@aol.com wrote: > Sorry to say this but I really don't see a problem with all this. > > > spyrylz =) The problem is that if you are apologizing ahead of time, why then do you proceed to do it? I COULD make the feeble excuse that I'm working on a lot of list-related projects that sometimes slow my response to requests by fellow EDAs. (And that your request and emails had fallen into the cracks.) I could whine about doing things like arranging or helping with a majority of the east coast EDA gatherings; silly things like funding and designing for the pick project... attending four Living Room Tours in three states... recording two of them for the girls, and hosting the final one... coordinating LRT tee sales to the list before I shipped CindyLee and Elizabeth's stock back to them (damn that UPS strike)... designing and printing hundreds of those digitally printed full color LRT tour posters free for everyone... trying to get the online fanzine out by the fall (honest guys, it's on the way)... designing more j-cards for existing and new tape trees... seeding the Future Folklore tapes... working on many other minor projects, and one major project that will be re-announced to the list within a week or two. Around all this, I work as a self-employed consultant (ie, I normally get paid for my TIME). My accountant would spank me if they knew how many hundreds of buttons, angelfood tapes and other BS I have given away gratis (ie, my expense) to EDAs over the past year and a half! (And no, my accountant isn't the type I'd like to be spanked by, either! ;-) I COULD use these excuses, but I won't! Like the villian in the old Batman TV series, I have to reveal my diabolical plans for world domination just before the last commercial break! THE REAL STORY is that the Harris Clan * is * running a scam, offering "free" j-cards, and then steaming off your hard-earned 32 cent stamps and selling them for BIG profits on the secondary market! If Josh promises not to pursue legal action, and agrees not sell this incrimidating story to any of the television networks or major book publishers, I can offer this out-of-court settlement: I have already mailed Josh's j-cards in the original envelope he sent me (he even thought to have it metered, thank god, or I would have already steamed off his stamps, don'tcha know...) AND I also sent him TWO of those lovely self-stick collector's edition Bugs Bunny stamps so that his total investment is ONE cheap envelope (hell, I threw in a blank #10 envelope as well)! Why TWO stamps? Hey, I had to. Josh has 64 cents (?) metered on it, and I want him to be 100% satisfied. (Besides, me and the waitresses at "Humpty Dumpty's Coffee, Donuts, Breakfast, Lunch, Car Wash and More" (tm) understand the value of over-tipping!) I am, however, at a loss as how to repair any emotional damage I've done to Josh... * sigh * What a load off my chest... I can now live with myself! I have learned my lesson, and consider myself humbled before the list... (and if you believe that one... ;-) Now that I have redeemed myself, I'd like to announce the latest Harris sca...err, offer! Send me $25 (cash, no stamps or metered envelopes, please), your ATM account/PIN numbers and the names of ten of your most gullible friends or family members and I'll send you details on how you too can make lots of money, $25 (cash) at a time! - -- Dennis (never twice the same conviction) Harris p.s. * doh * I just found a stray envelope for Bill P as well, requesting j-cards! I do every day because I am one. What I really thought is that Jewel was probably an ex-member of the church. I have noticed that many people who have left the church tend to have a very cynical attitude about religion and life in general. The two songs I mentioned are very cynical songs, so maybe thats why I got that hunch. I'm not saying I could tell she used to be a Mormon. I'm just saying I had an small inclination about her that turned out to be true. I'm only posting this to the list to make clear that I am not trying to stereotype or offend any religion. Not only is it a thing of beauty, but it si easily identified at all concerts, etc., making finding other EDAs a simpler effort! Now, on to your points regarding Atlantic and Jewel. Yes, I believe that Atlantic Records is putting profitability ahead of Jewel's artistic integrity, but I would expect no less. Atlantic is a huge company that, for every "Jewel" they find (no pun intended), have to recoup the losses from the other 99 artists they signed that lost money for them. So, in order to survive, I think Atlantic chooses to maximize profits from their hit artists. Not doing so would probably force them out of business, or at least force them to reduce the number of unknown artists they sign. I wonder if Jewel signed with Atlantic because they are so large, and they have the marketing muscle to promote her heavily, and if she knew that she would be giving away some control of her career with this choice. I would have to think that there were plenty of smaller labels that were looking to sign her, and who were probably willing to give her total control of what she put out and when. Finally, about the "new" album. Intuition tells me that EDAs will be disappointed with the new album, at least more than POY. Why? Because we will probably know and have versions of the songs already, and may find that the live recordings we have (e.g. various treed tapes, Hard Rock Live, Unplugged, etc.) are more enjoyable than the album versions. Remember the feeling you had the first time you heard "Angel Standing By?" Well, chances are you won't get that feeling with the new album, since you probably will have heard all the songs already. Yes, she could easily have four albums out right now, based on her fecundity, but who would buy them? All 3,000 of her hard-core fans? Maybe 100,000 curious fans? Probably not enough to justify the albums. hmmm...I seem to sound very corporate. Probably the result of working at a big company for waaay too long. Cris Brafman was asking why Jewel wasn't a nominee for MTV Viewer's Choice Awards in London. In response Tom Harris wrote: "You're watching MTV-Europe, which holds their own award show seperate from MTV-NA, as does MTV-Asia (What about Latin America?). The award shows are all hosted by their own guests at their own venues." As far as I know MTV Asia does NOT have its own awards show at its own venue =(. Maybe the other Asian EDAs can confirm or deny this (at last count there are 5 of us now! =D). MTV Asia VJs actually cover the MTV NA event. There are also a lot of spoof contests, but no official MTV Asia Music Awards. The other two MTV Asia channels (Mandarin & India) and MTV Japan also have their own Viewers Choice Awards but I doubt if they have their own awards show. But, if Tom was talking about the "Viewer's Choice Award" then he is right, MTV Asia has its own "MTV Asia Viewers' Choice Award". This year's winner is a band called "The Eraserheads" and they are from the Philippines (I'm biased but I think they deserve it.). The E-heads will be getting their trophy in New York(?) with the rest of the MTV Awardees. They will be joined by most if not all of the other "Viewer's Choice Awardees" from around the world! So the MTV Awards in North America is actually kind of a global awards show. Of course maybe it is about time for each MTV Area to have their own awards show. Peace and Prayers. I posted this a few months ago, but several new things have been added since then. Its far from finished, but since the Jewel List FAQ is still ridiculously out of date, I've decided to post this new updated version of what's been done so far (in "very rough draft" form.) Quite a bit is purposely left out because I've yet to confirm accuracy on all of it. I want to acknowledge Neal Copperman & Jeff Hanson who began writing this early Jewel history a few years ago. Among other information they provided, both were regulars at The Innerchange so they are able to tell about it first hand. Their previous work was sent out in the FAQ & that was the basis on which this detailed history was started. I hope this helps all the new people & I know there's a few things even the most diehard Jewel fans don't know, so I hope you all find it somewhat educational. Again, forgive my lame writing style. This is simply a rough draft. Enjoy! :-) MrBB ************************************************** P.S. BEFORE YOU EMAIL ME, please be sure to read: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/#mrbb ************************************************** PART 1 - Brief Kilcher Family History: Jewel's grandparents, Yule Kilcher & his wife Ruth immigrated to Alaska from Switzerland in 1941. They settled in Homer on an 800 acre homestead on Kachemak Bay. (Yule later became state senator & was instrumental in drafting the state constitution. ) Yule & Ruth performed publicly throughout Alaska & Europe. The family musical tradition, together with Ruth's particular flair for ethereal verse and love of the natural world became key elements in the musical tradition passed down to their children (& grandchildren) that survives today. The family farm became well known, at first largely through the efforts of Yule, who made a film about the home steading life and took it on lecture tours across the states and Europe. It was a difficult life & Ruth took refuge in music and writing. Ruth & Yule had 8 children named Mairiis, Wurtila, Fay, Sunrise, Otto, Stellavera, Catkin & Jewel's father Atz. ``Mom was the main musical force in the family,'' says Mairiis, Yule & Ruth's eldest daughter. ``Singing was always a big unifying force, no matter what other conflicts went on. You can't be mad at each other when you have to harmonize.'' Jewel Kilcher was born May 23, 1974 in Payson,Utah where Atz & Lenedra were living while Atz attended college nearby. (Jewel also has an older brother Shane,a younger brother Atz & a younger half brother Nikos.) Upon graduation from college, Atz & Lenedra moved their family back to Homer Alaska where Jewel & her brothers were raised on the 800-acre homestead. Jewel's parents became a popular Alaskan folk singing duo, well known regionally as Atz & Nedra Kilcher. They released their 1st self produced primarily acoustic album in 1977 entitled "Early Morning Gold". This album consists of original Alaskan folk songs written in collaboration or by Atz alone. Here's an edited excerpt written by Allen Reeves, who at the time of the release was President of the Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau: "The first time I ever heard Atz & Nedra Kilcher sing, I was struck by the honesty & simplicity of their beautiful folk music---and with the fact they are making history. You see, there has never before really been any Alaska folk music. Oh, there is ample ethnic music, but no real folk music. Not until Atz & Nedra put verse & melody to the spirit of the 'Great Land' The Kilchers paint a pure portrait of Alaska." In 1978 Atz & Nedra released their second album titled "Born & Raised on Alaska Land". This featured more elaborate production & again featured all originals with the exception of a song written by Atz's sister (Jewel's Aunt), Mairiis "Mossie" Davidson (who also released Alaskan folk albums regionally). Part 2: What happened prior to "Pieces Of You"? In 1980 at the age of six Jewel began accompanying her parents performing for locals & tourists in Alaskan villages, clubs & hotels. Her earliest musical influences consisted primarily of the music of her family and a particular fascination with Ella Fitzgerald. Lenedra, being very spiritually guided, developed Jewel's spiritual side & raised her with a sense of magic as well as an appreciation & deep respect for the Indian Way. Jewel moved to Hawaii in the early 80s & lived with relatives while attending school. She regularly avoided being beat up & the prejudice toward her "being different" by yodeling (a talent she was mastering from Atz). A few years later Jewel's parents divorced & she remained with her father & brothers in Homer. Writing became Jewel's expression of choice since she found herself unable to verbalize many of her strong feelings at this young age. She later became enamored by South American poets Pablo Neruda, Octavio Paz & Giaconda Belli. She also absorbed philosophers Kant, Plato, Dostoevski (& many others) as well as sensual writers such as Henry Miller & Anais Nin. At age 14, Jewel was "adopted" into the native Indian culture. She participated in a ceremony which included a "talking circle". During this she realized that although she had written for years, she was verbally speechless. Her "adopted" uncles took her for a walk & told her "you have a gift to give the world" and related various native Indian wisdom & folklore. (Note: Dig up a copy of a book called "Mindfire- Dialogues In The Other Future" by Alexander Blair-Ewart published by Somerville House. It includes an early interview with Jewel expanding on this time period & her experiences with the native Indian culture.) She then began a conscious effort to speak more from her heart & and began articulating her feelings. During this time she continued to perform with her father as a duo & later in a trio called "New Directions" which featured Jewel,Atz & their friend Suzanne Little. She also joined a local rap group called "Le Creme" briefly. It was over the course of this decade (1980-1990) that Jewel developed her vocal ability & her experience at working a crowd. Atz was a wonderful storyteller & Jewel absorbed his knack for "fun & entertaining between song banter". Her father also instilled an extremely strong work ethic & taught Jewel what a professional musicians life is all about. During this time, repatiore consisted of mainly Atz Kilcher originals with Jewel singing harmony & background vocals. However, Jewel did take lead vocals on popular cover songs of the day such as "Angel From Montgomery" by John Prine, "Me & Bobby McGee" by Kris Kristofferson, the theme from "The Rose", etc, as well as many others. In High School, Jewel began to accompany herself on guitar. Her junior and senior years of high school were spent at Interlochen Fine Arts Academy in Michigan. Here she studied sculpture, art, music & dance. Interlochen is an expensive private school, and 70% of Jewel's first year tuition was paid for by a vocal scholarship. The remainder of the expenses were raised at what turned out to be Jewel's first solo concert. The citizens of Homer were supportive enough to cover the rest of the first year tuition. It was at Interlochen that Jewel's songwriting ideas began germinating. She began to build up a small repatiore of songs. She made a few demo recordings of eleven of these songs. These eleven demos consisted of her very first songwriting attempts. Other than "Don't"(then referred to as "Waltz") & "Dance Between Two Woman"(then simply titled "Dance"), the other 9 songs remain unreleased. Three of those nine ("Billy", "Can't Have My Soul" [NOT WWSYS] & "Money") continued into Jewel's early repatiore. The remaining half dozen being abandoned in favor of many new songs (including "Who Will Save Your Soul"). During Spring Break she joined Lenedra & fell in love with San Diego. The following year she was awarded a full scholarship & returned to Interlochen for her senior year. Upon graduation in the summer of 1992 (& after a brief stay in Boulder, Co,) Jewel again rejoined Lenedra in San Diego, which she now calls home. Jewel worked a variety of jobs including waitressing, but generally lost them when her interest in chatting with the customers surpassed her desire to do the actual job. Eventually she decided that working unfulfilling dead-end jobs was an unbearable way to live. With Lenedra's encouragement they moved out of their apartment, into their vans, to pursue their dreams. With lots of peanut butter, carrot sticks, and a guitar, Jewel settled down to write more songs. Around this time of new songwriting activity, she became very close to local songwriter, Steve Poltz & his band The Rugburns. They shared songs with each other & began collaborating on material. Steve taught Jewel how to better work within a "verse/chorus/verse" structure & his influence balanced her very serious writing style with his more humorous & spontaneous style.(They still periodically collaborate.) Her new ability to churn out songs was revealing a prolific talent at songwriting. She regularly debuted new songs to friends & this endeared her to the few who heard them. In late 1993 & early 1994, she began performing sporadic gigs to sparse crowds at various area coffeehouses including one in Pacific Beach called The Innerchange. Word started to spread, and eventually she had a regular Thursday night spot there and an ever growing audience. Her name began to show up in the local press and she landed a few choice opening spots. She took an extended trip back to Homer at the end of the year, and things really took off when she returned to San Diego in early 1994. At the start of the year, the coffeehouse was roughly 60% full, and a mere $3 got you a 3-4 hour set of original material, with the only exception being an occasional cover of Tracy Chapman's "Behind the Wall". Becoming a prolific, versatile songwriter, Jewel still regularly debuted a handful of new songs at each show. These shows were a hotbed of local acoustic talent, and Jewel was regularly joined by frequent collaborator Steve Poltz. Fellow Rugburns Rob Driscoll and Gregory Page also joined them, as well as other local musicians including Joy Eden Harrison, Cindy Lee Berryhill, John Katchur and Byron Nash. Jewel also saw her first "official release" as a participant on 91X's sampler of area talent called "Saint Doug" around this time. She included a take of "Angel Needs A Ride". Everyone who saw her must have told five friends, since each week the crowd continued to grow. Soon, people were being turned away, while a few hardy souls could be seen staring through the large windows at the packed house inside. For extra money, Jewel put together a tape that she briefly distributed herself called "Shiva Diva Doo Wop" which contained the songs "1000 Miles Away", "She Cries","Painters" & "My Own Private God's Gift To Woman".The tape came with a j-card insert that also featured an original drawing by Jewel. Income was also supplemented by selling posters of original artwork by Lenedra which featured a blue background with a purple angel on it & the words "Participate In Miracles". The purple angel glowed in the dark & they sold for $5. The concept behind these posters was to buy two of them, keep one for yourself & post the other in a place you felt could benefit from its message. Around this time, the news of the young (19!) singer had gotten to L.A., and record executives started driving down to sleepy San Diego to catch the shows. They immediately recognized the quality of what they were seeing, and soon the limos were directed towards Jewel's van/home. She was wined & dined by various companies only to be dropped off back at her van. :-) After a brief courtship, she was signed to Atlantic Records by Jenny Price in March of 1994. They started making the trek up to L.A. looking for producers and musicians to record with. The advance on the record enabled Jewel to rent a house with Lenedra, & to purchase a new car (a used Volvo) and a new guitar (a steal due to an imperfection in the finish). All this added exposure continued to draw crowds to The Innerchange, which first added a second show, and then upped the admission price to $5. By this time, Jewel had written over a hundred songs. On July 28 and 29, 1994, a sound crew descended on The Innerchange to record 4 sets of Jewel on her home stomping grounds. All the live recordings on "Pieces of You" come from those two sessions. The remainder of POY was recorded at Neil Young's Redwood Digital Studio at his Broken Arrow Ranch in Woodside,CA during the following month. Atlantic prepared to help promote the album with a number of promotional items. The most popular of these is a CD called "Save The Linoleum". This was released to radio stations to promote the single "Who Will Save Your Soul" & featured both live & studio out takes from the POY recordings. Included were unreleased versions of "My Own Private God's Gift To Woman", "I'm Sensitive","Race Car Driver", & "Flower". Also an EPK (electronic press kit) was produced for press release along with a contest to win a trip to San Diego. This EPK included a videotape called "Jewel & Mike Take San Diego". It featured an interview done by local DJ Mike Halloran & a brief tour through Jewel's life at the time. Besides interviews, footage included a tour of The Innerchange, the spot where she parked her van every night, surfing, hilarious footage inside Steve Poltz' apartment along with an impromptu duet of YWMFM & a home video of WWSYS. An official video was also produced for WWSYS for release to the video channels. Jewel began 1995 doing what is termed a "residency tour". January was spent rotating 5 nights a week from 5 California venues. February repeated this procedure but hit a rotation of Washington DC, Philadelphia, Cambridge & NYC. It wound up in NYC at Ludlow Street Cafe on 2/28/95, the same day Atlantic released Jewel's album "Pieces Of You". Back home two days later, on 3/2/95, Jewel performed both an early & late show to friends & local supporters in celebration of the album's release at the Cosmopolitan Theater in San Diego.
