Tomorrow afternoon/evening (or perhaps Sunday) I will be announcing the details about a new mailing list at smoe.org which will exist soley for the planning & discussion of any EDA projects that involve things such as the EDA JEWELry and the EDA paper yearbook. The main reason for this is this discussion really doesn't belong on the jewel@smoe list (at least not with this high number of emails) All those interested in discussing & planning these projects will be able to subscribe to this new list. Plans on how to recruit more folk to this list and updating the regular list on progress will be in tomorrow's/Sunday's announcement. Mike - list manager :) **** The Jewel Mailing List Netiquette & New Member Guide is at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup Patty Griffin Tour Dates & more is at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/pattyg/patttour.htm Ducksoup@spectra.net DuckofPrey@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Aug 1997 01:20:54 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: EDA Guitar Picks: THE Next Order Update - REPOST This is a re-post from what I posted about the EDA Guitar Picks on Thursday August 14th. Seems that somehow many folks missed it, as way too many questions about the picks are still coming onto the list. Mandy (orderer), Dennis (artwork designer) and I (communicator) are the ones who will do this again, most likely with the help of the same investors/sellers (Rachel, Jared, Kris, Larry, Dennis, Mandy & I). Because of this, it is senseless to keep asking on the list about them or offering suggestions TO the list. It's just unnecessarily contributing to the email in-boxes of nearly 1500 people. If you have comment, ideas or suggestions, please send them to me at this address AND Mandy at mandyd@execnet.net :) Updates on idea/suggestions SINCE my post: THE HOLES IN THE PICKS IDEA: we won't be doing that. That's what drills are for :) Everyone who wants holes can put their own holes in them :) These are guitar picks and many folks will be using them as just that. (as will Jewel, I don't think she'd use picks with holes in them, they'll be weaker and they'll break easier) DIFFERENT COLORS: The next order of picks most likely will all be one color. We are not sure what that color will be. The last batch was light yellow because they HAD to be, based on availability. (We ordered ALL the picks to Jewel's specifications as we were giving many of them to her to use, which she is :) When we ordered them, the only color that was available (in Jewel's specs) were the light yellow ones. We don't want to order more than one color, as we don't want to deal with orders like "I want 3 reds, 2 greens and a blue"...it complicates it too much. The rest of my post from a week ago follows. Again, please don't flood the list with questions about these EDA picks, just email myself and Mandy. (mandyd@execnet.net) _________________ Hey everyone, Just wanted to give y'all an update on the "what's and when's" of the next order of EDA Guitar Picks. (For you new folk, an explanation follows below) Quick explanation for the REALLY, REALLY new. EDA stands for EveryDay Angels...EDAs are members of this mailing list....Jewel herself dubbed us as EveryDay Angels :) We are going to wait until mid to late September before we launch the next order of picks so that the college folks get a chance. They were in school last April and May when this idea was born and were out of school (no more email for many) and it's only fair to let them in on it this time. We *will* make provisions for bulk orders by *individuals* too (some folk wanted 50 to 100 themselves), details on that will be announced when we launch the next order. Our plans are to order enough as to not have the quick sellout as before, and to again supply Jewel with a batch of them :) SPECIAL NOTE TO KRIS KANES' CUSTOMERS FROM THE FIRST ORDER: Kris IS going to get replacements NOW for the 100 picks he lost and he will contact you folk privately soon :) To see what the EDA Guitar Picks look like, check out: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/edapicks.jpg (note the actual picks differ slighly than as depicted on the above jpg The desciption below is correct) THE STORY BEHIND THE PICKS: In early to mid-April, talk of what the list could give Jewel for her birthday surfaced, and MANY ideas came up. Two basically came to be. One was the actual star that was named for Jewel. (more on that later) The other was this EDA guitar pick thing. The idea was to make some guitar picks for Jewel, and to sell some to the EDAs. It was hoped to get them to Jewel by her birthday, but due to Murphy's Law, it was not to be. THE BRAND/TYPE OF PICK: The picks made are D'Adario brand, in the medium gauge. They are a pale yellow in color. On one side there is what we call the 'smoo' angel, and on the otherside, it says "We Are EveryDay Angels" and it has an 'illuminated' halo below the print. Both designs are by Dennis Harris. We consulted people in the Jewel camp on pick preferences, and we got these to match one of the styles of picks Jewel uses. We ordered 720 of them, 120 for Jewel as a present from the EDAs, 600 to sell to the EDAs. (They sold out in 36 hours!!) JEWEL'S OTHER EDA GIFT, THE STAR: In a nutshell, the EDAs also gave Jewel a real star for her birthday. A star in the middle of the 'bucket' of the Little Dipper is now and forever known as "Jewel Kilcher - Jewel of the North" (Well, forever on planet Earth anyway, the Klingons may call it D'Martog for all I know ;) To see more on the star gift, all you need to do is go to the page set up for it on Adam Longfellow's "Pieces Of Jewel" page at: http://home.sprynet.com/sprynet/xenomorph/birthday.htm Mike & Mandy :) **** The Jewel Mailing List Netiquette & New Member Guide is at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup Patty Griffin Tour Dates & more is at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/pattyg/patttour.htm Ducksoup@spectra.net DuckofPrey@aol.com **** The Jewel Mailing List Netiquette & New Member Guide is at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup Patty Griffin Tour Dates & more is at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/pattyg/patttour.htm Ducksoup@spectra.net DuckofPrey@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Aug 1997 02:05:18 From: patrik@octonline.com Subject: Re: JEWELry Hi, I just gotta add my idea in this. In article about the Lillith Fair, the writer, Lorraine Ali totally ripped on Jewel. She said that Jewel was the "stuck up one" and quoted her as saying, "What's cool is that no one here acts like a star. It doesn't matter how many records you sell, even though I've sold the most." Now for some reason, I have a hard time beliving that Jewel would say something like that, because it doesnt seem like her (or at least the person I've seen live and on T.V.). And if she did really say something like that, I dont think she meant it like she was better than the rest of the preformers. I think she would have meant it more like she wasn't going to let her success get in the way. Sorry if something like this was posted eariler. See ya! :-) Jeremy P.S. does anyone know about Steve Poltz's solo album? If you do I'd like some information. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Aug 1997 02:40:26 From: patrik@octonline.com Subject: A few things Hi, I just had to add my two cents about a few things. 1) Does Jewel masterbate? I am so tired of the ridiculous amount of posts about this and I'm kicking myself for adding to this absolutly pointless question. Are you aware that this guy might have written as a joke? Maybe he was serious, but I doubt it. I think this guy was expecting an outburst, I too was expecting one, but not to this degree. And for crying out loud, why are all writting to the list? There is such a thing as a reply button. Sorry if this offended anyone but it had to be said. And 2) Jewel's future/media attention. Now a bit more serious. I don't care if Jewel gets all this attention, a lot of people might find it as oversaturation, and they're right, for the past little while she's been everywhere. Another example, the Spice Girls, granted it's not as much as Jewel but they are, and a lot of people are getting tired of them but true fans don't mind. Jewel's "right now" which means everybody wants to see and learn about her, so that's what's happening. Jewel's out of this world now, no one can say differently. I'm so happy for her, she's happy herself. If she lost her popularity, I wouldn't mind too much. She is the only singer who I like ALL her songs(that I've heard at least). I would buy anything she puts out, even if she's not noticed anymore. As long as I can listen to her music, I'm happy. True fans show themselves here as well, only true fans would. Don't go screaming at me about my true fan remarks, you all know what I mean. Ok, that's all I gotta say for now. Maybe he was serious, but I doubt it. It's time for a reality check about these things. It was _exactly_ this kind of nonesense that got the list in trouble to begin with. Was he serious, was he not serious, it doesn't mattter. It shouldn't have been posted here in joke or in seriousness. And even with a [joke] flag next to it it isn't funny. It's really sad and stupid. Anyone who's been on the Internet long enough knows that there ARE people like who ask these questions in seriousness. Dennis said it best when he wrote: "Jewel's touring, things are hopping on the list and some folks choose to skim crap off the floor to discuss. C'mon, the intelligence and taste level on this list is higher than this." Amen Dennis! Thank you for saying it! If something can be taken the wrong way, please please please DON'T post it. It's not appropriate for the list, it upsets people, and wastes so much energy. So before anyone says anything, imagine yourself up in front of a podium with 1000 people looking at you and ask yourself if you would say that in public. Believe me, the responses on the list are exactly how people in that audience would react because we _are_ those people in that audience. In future, if someone does something inappropriate, let's all just send private email to them and spare the list the messages. We have to keep messages down here so let's all do our best to keep the atmosphere positive here on the list. Accept the reality that from time to time someone will do something stupid or offensive. For those who are asking, I am still active in this, and always have been. I haven't been replying to this in list posts, because I expressly asked that this be taken care of via private e-mail between myself and whom ever else....I stated that I would keep the list posted on futher developments. Again, PLEASE DIRECT ALL QUESTIONS REGARDING JEWELry TO ME! joe PS I will be actively answering questions in the list that is to be presented tomorrow *sunday* ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Aug 1997 21:14:23 -0700 From: Reynolds Subject: Jewel's Mormon roots Iv'e read that Jewel was raised Mormon untill she was eight. Since a persons childhood can affect a persons personality so much, I was wondering if any thinks that it affects her music. I think it does and here's why. When I first heard Jewel, almost 2 years ago, I thought her music sounded like she might be Mormon or more likely a former member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints(thought I would use the real name once). I don't normally think this about artists, but I just had a hunch. I wasn't sure about it or anything, it was only a geuss, but I wasn't surprised when I found out that she once was Mormon. When I thought this I had only heard WWSYS and Racecar Driver, so maybe its something about those songs. I've thinking about this for a long time, and I wanted to know if I am the only person on earth who thought this. Does anyone think it changes her music at all. Maybe it was just a lucky geuss that had nothing to do with her songs. I look forward to seeing peoples opinion about how much her religous background affects her music. I posted a couple of weeks ago, warning people that if I didn't recieve their money for the EDA picks, they would be re-sold. Below is a list of people who sent me their money. All of these people have recieved their picks, or will recieve them in a few days. If you ordered picks from me and your name is not on this list, too bad. PLEASE READ THE DIRECTIONS BELOW. If you don't follow the directions correctly, your request will be discarded. 1) I expect these to sell really quickly. Therefore, if you read this message after August 25th, please do not mail me. They will be sold. 2) Send me mail at Cornflkgl@aol.com with "EDA picks" as the subject. IN the letter, write your name, email address, and the amount of picks you want to buy. Remember, the picks come in quantities of 2 ( for $1 ), 4 ( for $2 ), or 6 ($3 ). 6 is the largest amount of picks you can order. 3) I will ONLY reply to your letter if you will be receiving picks. Don't write to me and ask me if you got your request in in time- I won't answer it. You will ONLY be considered if you follow these directions. This is the fairest way I can come up with. Good luck ! Tegan ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Aug 1997 23:37:08 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: Announcing the new EDA-project@smoe mailing list! :) Hi y'all :) I'd like to now formally announce the new eda-project@smoe.org mailing list. This list was launched to aid in some endeavors, and also to solve a problem. It was formed to give a home-base for people who want to continue an already begun Jewel list project (usually producing a product for distribution to other list members/EDAs), so that they can plan, discuss and concentrate on the project and only reach those folks interested in the project during the building stages, as THEY hopefully will all be subscribed to this list during that time. Another reason was to keep the suggestions, planning etc off of the main Jewel@smoe.org list. (why send an email to 1500 people of which maybe two dozen are involved, when you can send that email to just those two dozen?) If there are 10 posts a day on this new list, and let's say 24 folks subscribed, only 240 emails will go out a day via smoe. If this was on Jewel@smoe, there would be roughly 5000 copies of those emails going out thru jewel@smoe per day. Just a weeeeeee bit of a difference :) For those of you now actively involved with discussing the two present EDA projects, the printed EDA Yearbook and the EDA JEWELry, I suggest you all write each other privately and subscribe soon! When you subscribe, you'll get an introductory letter explaining a lot on how we want you to use this new list and keep discussion on the jewel@smoe list to a minimum (only periodic updates to the Jewel list, if/when necessary) To subscribe to this new list, it is a nearly identical procedure as subscribing to the Jewel list(s). Send an email to: eda-project-request@smoe.org and have ONLY the word: subscribe in the BODY of the email. (The subject content does not matter). A few minutes later you will get two emails. (may be a few *hours* later on AOL....honest, AOLers know this) One from majordomo@smoe.org, one from confirm@smoe.org You'll have to reply to that email from confirm@smoe.org to complete your subscription process. In that email from confirm@smoe.org is a code similar to 9757397-4ECFEC2 It is in the body and the subject of the email. All you have to do is reply and make sure that code is mailed back to confirm@smoe.org in either the body or the subject (should be automatic when hitting 'REPLY' on most email systems) and you are in!! That's it. Those of you that want to join....well join! :) Mike :) **** The Jewel Mailing List Netiquette & New Member Guide is at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup If you are new to the list and need someone to guide you check out the "Adopt A Newbie" page at: http://www.geocities.com/wellesley/3079/newbies.html Ducksoup@spectra.net DuckofPrey@aol.com ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #665 ***************************
