Courtney has a point here. Too much fame can hurt you, and has been exposed a lot over the media. One of my friends, who also used to like Jewel when she first came out, now doesn't like her that much. He's not an EDA, but you don't need to be one to see Jewel. She's EVERYWHERE he said he's pretty sick of her now. Maybe it would be good for Jewel to keep out of the public so much now. What else does she need? People already know about her. Those people that used to say, "Jewel? Jewel who?" are not saying "Jewel? Again?!?" Take for example, Shaquille O'Neal. He's a great player and works his butt off EVERYTIME he's on the court (and yes he does, though some of you may not agree), but he's spread himself out too much through the media to the point where some people don't like him. But like Jewel, he has more than one dream, and will pursue those dreams when they get the chance. Mark - --- Inside my heart there's an empty room. The Viewers Choice Award doesn't say anything about the award going to the best video. There is a separate category entitled "Best Video." So when you vote for the VCA, I think the voter should be selecting the canidate they like the most, not the one who has best video. Also, in the ongoing Atlantic Record debate, I am one who is in defense of Atlantic. The extreme amount of success that YWMFM endured was quite unexpected, and that put the release date for the new album back. I feel that after an artist has a large #1 hit, it is important to have a solid follow-up to that song (YWMFM). Re-recording FG is a strong follow up to YWMFM and it prevents what I like to call a "#1 burn out" or "a one hit wonder in the making." I have more to say, but will keep this post short. I am VERY pleased to annouce that I have completely re-vamped the Adopt-A-Newbie program. I realized when I had 67 newbies and only 10 parents that my old system would no longer work. I've literally worked all day the past two days and come up with a completely new system which is based around my Adopt-A-Newbie web site :). Here's now the new system works: If you are a Newbie: 1) The first thing you need to do (and this is VERY important) is to check out http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup. This will tell you a lot about how the list is run and will help you develop list ettiqutte. This may not seem important, but if you don't learn this stuff, you will almost certainly hear SOMEONE complain about if you happen to make an honest mistake :). Seriously, there are some really good pointers here. 2) Write to me ( cornflkgl@aol.com ) with the subject "Newbie Ads" with the folowing information: a) your name b) e-mail address c) the city and state that you live in d) any other musical interests that you have This info will be put up on the site, so that potential parents can find you and adopt you. :) 1) Read Mike Connell's site and make sure that you KNOW list ettiquette. 2) Check out the available newbies. 3) Choose as many newbies as you'd like to adopt (The more the better :) ) 4) hit "adopt me" next to the newbies name and include the follwing information in the message: a)THE NAME AND STATE OF THE NEWBIE ( very, very important ! ) b) your name c) age d) e-mail address e) the city and state in which you live f) your other musical interests ( if you are approved, I'll send this info to your new newbie ! ) 5) You will get a message back letting you know if the adoption had been approved. You MUST be a list member to adopt a newbie. This will be verified before the adoption is approved. 6) After writing to your newbie and introducing youself, you'll be expected to be a "mentor" to him/her. One of the duties of a parent is to watch for the posts your newbie makes. Make sure you read them all. If your newbie makes a mistake in netiquette ( for instance: posts without NJC or posts a one-sentence post ), please write to them PRIVATELY and tell them ! The same goes for you- well, kinda. Make sure all your posts are made with the correct netiquette, because your newbie will be learning from you. Also make sure you answer any questions your newbie has :). The Adopt A Newbie site is set up with what I call "Newbie Ads". These are categorised by state or country, and have a listing of the newbie's age, name, email address, city, and other musical interests. Each newbie has a mail link next to his or her name. I set this up so that ANY NEWBIE can go to the site and look for other newbies near them- then write to them from the site and make friends :). Newbies often talk about how they don't know anyone- well, here's your chance to meet some people ! If you are a newbie and would like to be included on my Newbie ads page, please follow the directions above. So now the only requirements to be a parent are that you are familiar with the list etiquette and "rules" at http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup. I request that if you're going to be a parent- you've been on the list for at least a month, you know what JewelStock was, and you practice good list etiquette. I will check through Majordomo to make sure that adoptive parents are actually on the list... OK ! Most are almost perfect ("Cleveland Today"), but one had much of it mistakenly transcribed. Below is the correct lyrics to "Stranger Enter From The East" (followed by the mistake filled transcription for comparison purposes). Some EDAs have also been very curious about the lyrics to the song "Down". I've heard almost every version she's done of this (approx 30 so far) & each one changes considerably from night to night. It's a song with great music but no definate lyrics yet. The "Down" lyrics have been more consistant lately, though. Following the "Stranger" transcription (below) is some "Down" lyrics currently being used. By the time you read this, they've likely changed again. These were lyrics sang on a few nights of the recent LF tour. All the best, MrBB "Stranger Enter From the East" Jewel Kilcher 1997(corrected) I went out a-wandering Beneath an unknown sky The heavens all shook violently You caught my eye A strange fruit fell And struck me to the core My heart became a single flame It wanted nothing more Stranger, enter from the east Stranger, step inside this place And hold me..........hold me The clock became a bullet hole Cruel and unkind It hurt me with its second hand Alone another night Stranger, enter from the east Stranger, step inside this place Blue.....Is that you? Well, don't bother knocking on my door this time Blue..... Go be true for someone else There's no room inside this heart of mine My heart has four empty rooms Three wait for lightning and one waits for you I must have you all to myself Feel the full weight of your skin I'll hollow out my insides To place you in Stranger, enter from the east Stranger, step inside this place And hold me.......hold me Hold me In response to this previous mistaken transcription: <<"Stranger Enter From the East" I run for the water The leaves and no sky Heaven's all shocked violently You call my name Strange blue fin Stroked me to the core My heart became a single flame It wanted nothing more Stranger, enter from the east Stranger, step inside this place All lonely, all lonely God became a bullet hole Cruel and unkind It hurt me with its second hand Alone, another night Stranger, enter from the east Stranger, step inside this place Blue In that little well of water Knocking on my doorstep Blue We threw for someone else There's no woman inside this heart of mine My heart has four empty rooms Three wait for lightning and one waits for you It must have been all to myself The gentle weight of your skin I hollow out my insides To place you in Stranger, enter from the east Stranger, step inside this place All lonely, all lonely Lonely, lonely All lonely>> ************************************** "Down" by Jewel Kilcher 1997 (a recent correct transcription) Take me down to the water Where the cold wind blows Take me out to the wildlife, baby The red light meets the crossbow I will take you there, I will take you there........ Down The exit sign always leads to the west Bar stools begin to cry Jupiter looks for a cosmic sign Still you wonder why I will take you there, Will you take me there?........ Down Underneath the twilight Stars begin to sigh.....still you wonder why You can't think of any words to say (note: this line changes almost every night) Take me out to the strawberry fields The sun drips like honey through my hair Let the warm lights fill me up L.A. or anywhere I will take you there, I will take you there........ (part I ) WARNING : This is a review of a trip taken by 3 EDAs from approximately August 13th to August 20th. Some foul language may be used. This is not intended for small children. Day 1: Tom picks me up at my house around 2:30. It's pouring out. We head for Tegan's house with somewhat sketchy directions. After a stop at McDonald's for dinner ( Tom had also eaten McDonald's for lunch ), we enter New Hampshire and are immediately befuzzled by Tegan's directions. We finally meet up with her at 5:20. She honks and waves, and we follow The PartyEscort(tm) to her house. At the house we meet her Mom, Dad, 74 cats, and 5 dogs ( that's 7 Canadian dogs ). We then pile all of our belongings into the PartyEscort(tm) and go for a ride so Tegan can pick up her paycheck. We take a scenic tour of Andover , NH ( closed after 7 PM ). We decide to stop for pizza. THIS is where the trip starts getting a bit fuzzy. At dinner, we decide we're all wide awake and ready to depart immediately for Canada. We go back to Tegan's, warn a few people online that we're leaving, and depart around 10:45 PM ( that's EST, not Canadian Time ). With only 2 ( or three ) stops for gas, and a quick birthplace quiz at Canadian customs, we stop for a 10 minute sight-seeing at Niagra Falls. Ooh. We get to our hotel in Missssssssssssssssssssssissagua ( where the wind goes sweeping down the plains ) around 7:30, and attempt to check in. No luck. However, we are referred to the Golden Griddle for breakfast. Looking forward to a big, yummy meal, we get... gross food. FUN THINGS ON THE WAY TO CANADA : - -The glowing penises - -"Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee !!" - -"What's the speed limit ?" - -"That's not the sunrise- it's a city." - -"Those are the tallest free standing light fixtures in the US." FUN THINGS UPON ARRIVAL TO CANADA: - -HOMO milk and Gay Lei ( with a rainbow ) butter for Tegan... - -"This peameal stuff isn't bacon, it's just... fat." - -"Pick up that room ! The guests are sleeping in the lobby !" Fast forward a while... Tegan and I depart from the hotel to get lunch, and almost run over Paul Kim on the way. He jumps in the PartyEscort(tm), and we head off to... yes... McDonald's. Tegan gets a pizza and I pour vinegar all over my fries. I bring Tom back some McDonald's food, much to his dismay. We're supposed to meet eveyone at the hotel at 6 to get to the Holly McNarland show. Apparently, that means 6 CANADIAN time, so we never find them. We get to the show around 7, sit, and wait for other EDAs. Gian shows up around 8. The others show up at 9:15, and still OTHERS show up after we're already in the club. Tom and I don't really feel up for a show, and since Liz is too young to get in, we hang out with Mia and Liz outside instead. We went to a mexican place for dinner, and I had my first real alcoholic drink ever ( strawberry margerita, I think... I dunno, it had tequila in it ). I get somewhat woozy, we all pack in the car, and head back to the hotel. The next day we wake up, take showers, and go to Lilith. Tom and Rachel will now astoud you with our incredible good luck. You see, I HAD tickets for the show, but, um... I forgot them at home. I went to the box office and claimed they never sent me my tickets, so they printed up more for me :) ( good luck #1 ). We then got in line for the lawn seats. A couple came by offering to trade for their seats in the last row before the lawn... we said no 'cause it didn't seem worth it ( bad luck #1/good luck#2 ). After they left and sold the tickets, we realized we should have bought them so we'd have seats...we were bummed. Then, as the line began to move into the venue, someone else came by selling his seats ( Ok, OK, he was a scapler ). We thought quick and bought them ( good luck #3 ). Why was this all good luck ? 1) It poured for almost the entire show, 2) the first tickets we weer offered would have still gotten us poured on, but 3) the tickets we actually bought were JUST under the underhang , so we were dry :). Cool show... We impressed the hell out of the girls sitting next to us with our Jewel pictures and stories :). Then we went back to the hotel and slept. The NEXT day, everyone else went to Lilith again. We all met at Steve Ito's apartment and went out to a rooftop breakfast where you couldn't actually see anything. We then "borrowed" Tegan's car for the day. We let out our other passengers near the venue, and went shopping for a while. Tom bought me a necklace with a piece of rice with our names written on it. We ate at Mr. Sub. We got back to the venue and picked people up, and left. FUNNY THINGS THAT HAPPENED THIS DAY: - -"Wait a minute... weren't THEY the ones that wanted to go to a rooftop breakfast ?" - -"CHINESE FIRE DRILL !!!" - -Do they wanna have a party ? EDAs, I'm going to the show at Jones Beach 8/31. I was wondering if there were any EDA Gatherings taking place. Also, I know that several NY shows have had "after parties" where EDAs have gotten to meet Miss JK. This would be a dream come true for me as you well could expect. Anyone who has info on anything post it (CC to news please). Or contact me directly. Thanks guys you're the best. Music As the rain pelted last weekend's Lilith Fair stop in Toronto, fans of Sarah McLachlan, Jewel, Shawn Colvin and others, weren't the only ones braving the weather 'til the end of the concert. Soggy camera crews were on hand to capture the back-to-back shows at the Molson Amphitheatre for future broadcast on the CBC. "Each of the performers came out and did a 50-minute set, and there's just so much incredibly beautiful performance material that it's going to be tough to get it into 48 minutes for the CBC," says Carol Reynolds, of Carol Reynolds Productions, one of the executive producers of the project. (Note: Forty-eight minutes is the running time of a one-hour show, excluding commercials). In Toronto, Reynolds' crew taped performances by Meredith Brooks, Indigo Girls, Colvin, Jewel and McLachlan, including "a couple of really special finales where they all came out and sang together." But the crew had to go to Pittsburgh last Tuesday to nab Sheryl Crow, who had bypassed Toronto's Lilith dates. "That is part of the special as well," says Reynolds, even though the broadcast will be billed as being "from Toronto". The program is a collaborative effort among Toronto's Carol Reynolds Productions, Martin Fischer of Nashville's Hi Five Entertainment, and Lauri Feldman. Jim Yukich, known for his work with Phil Collins, is the director. "We were also very fortunate to use the CBC crew and facilities at the Molson Amphitheatre," says Reynolds, who plans to distribute the special worldwide. No official air date has been set by the CBC, though this fall would seem a good bet. Meanwhile, a separate documentary of the Lilith Fair tour -- which wraps up in Vancouver this Sunday -- is also in the works for U.S. music channel VH1. Feldman, again, is the executive producer. The VH1 crew has been on the tour throughout the U.S., says Reynolds. "They came into Canada last weekend, then headed back to the States, Calgary and the big finale in Vancouver. They've actually been busing with the caravan of buses and getting some incredible footage," recounts Reynolds, who doesn't know at this early stage if her TV special will include interviews or backstage material. "This is Sarah's dream to do this," says Reynolds. "A lot of people around her said it would never work, to bring together a tour like this (all-female headliners) and make it work, but it's the hottest tour of the summer in the States, and it came to Toronto and we had this incredible rainstorm Friday night and not one person left. The lawn was full, and they were there the whole evening. It was an incredible audience. And, fortunately, Saturday, we had rain during the day but not in the evening. And Pittsburgh, similarly, when we were taping Sheryl Crow, it was a torrential downpour and not one member of the audience left. It was a very loyal audience." And it's all on tape. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Aug 1997 17:13:41 -0400 From: "Peter Jancaitis" Subject: Jewelry "We can have things to choose from.....You know like an anklet, although it would be kinda hard to spot you know?? a choker which can have the letters eda on it or the one that Caroline wad talking about the one with the angel in the middle?? ( part II ) The NEXT day, we left for Gerry's house in Montreal. It was a lot longer ride then we thought it would be... we got pulled over, we ate at Mr. Sub again, we got to Gerry's house, and he had made food for us :). Gerry's house was the most beautiful EDA abode I've ever seen... Gerry and Tegan left for the next Lilith show, and Tom and I stole Tegan's car again and went to a museum. We ate dinner at Dundee's, and I got 2 ( that's 7 Canadian ) pina coladas. We went back to Gerry's and were asleep when he and Tegan showed up. SOME MORE SEMI-PRIVATE JOKES : - -"What's with all these chick cops ?" - -"You were going 138 in a 100 zone, but I have you half off." - -:::Tegan runs to the cop car::: "What's the conversion for this ticket ?!?" - -"I don't care ! She was cute ! Wonder if she wants to go to Lilith..." - -"Next item you KNOW I won't be able to eat what I've ordered, tell me in a nice way and suggest something else, OK ?" - -"I made ALL this CHICKEN for you guys, and you aren't hungry ?" - -"Eat your vegetables, kids !" Gerry takes us out to breakfast the next morning to a Creperie, and then let us loose on the streets of Montreal. We did church#1, decided to NOT do the Imax, ate Ben & Jerry's, and watched street performers for about 2 hours. Tegn video taped everything :). Gerry then brought us home so we could order Chinese food and prepare for Much Music I&I. Gerry, Tom, and Tegan mailbombed MM with EDA questions for Jewel. We sat down and watched the Sarah McLachlan I&I, and then saw the Jewel one. I liked it :). We saw someone outside holding up an EDA shirt, and Jewel was using the EDA picks. We all stayed up a bit longer, and then Tom and I went to bed :). THINGS THAT ARE HYSTERICAL ONLY TO US : - -"You're the man, Frank !" - -"it's an apple, cheese, and bacon crepe...I can't tell if I like it or hate it." - -"So... you wanna hear how I killed Elvis ?" - -The silver statue guy, AND the white statue guy :). - -"I'm gonna balance this moped, everybody say why, Frank ?""Why, Frank !""My people !" - -"I'll be in Boston next month... My girlfriend lives in Quebec city...I'm an American citizen !" Gerry wakes us up the next morning and leaves us in the house alone :). We're off to Quebec city, woo hoo ! We park under the Chateau Frontenac and walk around for a while. We go visit another church :). We take video of the city, we eat, and we decide to leave because it begins to rain. On the way out of the city, we decide to go visit St. Anne de Beaupre, a big HUGE church outside of Quebec City. We go there, video tape, blah blah blah. We eat at McDonald's AGAIN :). On the way back from the church, we see a restaraunt with two Smurf houses out front ! They're small, and they've got the mushroom tops and everything. The restaraunt is closed, so we pull over, get out, and take pictures. About a mile down the road we find a HUGE, furry St. Bernard statue wearing an accordion and carrying a whisky keg. In a picture taking mood, we stop and pose. We then stop by Montmorency Falls.I told them the legend of the girl who jumped over the falls, adn Holly McNarland's song "I Wanna Die in Water" comes on. It was $6 to park ( but that's Canadian, so it was... oh... $.50 . ), and we got out and walked really close to the water. We got soaked :). We then got back in the car, and with a gas stop, headed back to New Hampshire. MORE KNEE-SLAPPING ANTICS: - -TOM GOT HIS NIPPLE PIERCED !!! - -Tete merde ! Chien ! - -We passed the Big Apple ! - -"Look ! It's the A-Team !" - -"His nipples are the size of his balls !" - -"Tegan and Rachel got really wet at the waterfall... oh yeah, and Tom was there, too." On the way home from Quebec city, we take back roads ( nice navigational skills, Tom ). We see about 5 million churches, and capture every one on video. We also video tape the sunset and the moon. We stop at a gas station where I speak french and the attendant speaks English. We begin to listen to The Wizard of Oz, and right during the jitterbug, we hit... dun dun duhh.... the American customs. We wait at the gate for a customs officer to come over. He asks us a few questions, asks for our ID, and then pulls us over into a garage. We then have to fill out forms declaring everything we bought in Canada. He warned us about 4 times of what would happen to us if we found any drugs in the car, and then proceed to search all our stuff. Tegan asked if she could claim her speeding ticket. Tom and I stood quietly and tried not to bug the easily bug-able customs dude who was searching our stuff. Tegan aroused suspicion by asking if she could take her Holly McNarland poster so it wouldn't get wrinkled by the searcher. I needed to pee really badly, but I knew that if I asked, they'd strip search us or somthing. After searching through all of Tom's stuff and most of Tegan and I's stuff, he let us go. THINGS THAT WERE ONLY FUNNY BECAUSE WE HAD NO DRUGS WITH US: - -"We met on the internet." - -"You having a good time ?" - -"When are you going back to work ?" 10 minutes later... "When are you going back to work ?" - -"let me see that poster." - -"What are these pills ?" " Do you know the name of this perscription ?" - -"Um... you were supposed to pick up your duty-free forms back there... you can drive through Canadian customs again and do a U-turn, but they might search you there too." So eventually we arrive at Tegan's. We all check our email, and then Tom and I go to bed in the same room and have to hide from Tegan's Dad when we get up in the morning ( 'cause, you know, we're not married ). Tom and I get BURGER KING for lunch on the way home, and stop for some stuff for his nipple. We get to my house, where he bonds with my Mom. Tom and I then go see CopLand, and he leaves me house around 7:30 PM. THE LAST FUNNY THINGS: - -"The eagle points toward Russia to watch it... wait a minute... Russia's not over there !" - -"I don't trust that whole bleach and salt thing. Just buy Bactine." - -"What TIME is the MOVIE AT ?!?!?" Wow.... that was a lot :). OK, I'm done :) Rachel :) ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #663 ***************************
