I think she saw me up in Sec. 20 screaming and waving my hands because she kept looking up there and she smiled. I forget the setlist because I was SO excited to see her. But she sang 'WWSYS', 'Peices of You', '1,000 Miles Away', And one song that she recently wrote for a friend that just died, 'YWMFM', everyone joined in on that one, and 'Angel Standing By.' Those are the only ones that I remember. But she had an awsome show. The Indigo Girls had an awsome light show. They had everyone up during there set. (Accept for me, I was still getting over the shock of seeing Jewel:-) And then Sarah came out. She had a pretty good set. When she was done she left the stage, and I was starting to get worried because I wanted Jewel to come back out. Then after a little while, they all came out. And yes, once again I started balling because Jewel was down there. And they sang a song and Jewel was AWSOME! So then I left. This is the main reason the album is being held back. AR has stated that the do not want to release the second album until sales from POY start to drop off. They feel having a second album by the same artist would reduce total sales of the first. (aka reduce money made from sales of the first). >That is probably true...to a point. The AR marketing machine also want >to make an artist with longevity. An artist who's next 10 albums will >sell the way they are at a career peak. Hootie and the Blowfish's, >"Cracked Rear View" was AR's last major success story. Record companies always believe that they make every band's fame will last forever. That is why they sign them to ridiculous long-term deals (like REM's $70 Million deal). I cannot think of a band in the last five or ten years whose first album sold as well as POY (6,000,000+) and whose second album sold better or even equal (How many people are dying for Alanis Morrisette's next album?) >I also believe that AR is making >a song base that is easily identifiable to Jewel. This makes no sense either. Jewel said that many of the songs recorded last summer were shelved because she felt she had moved beyond them musically. How does it makes sense then to re-record a three year old song and release it? If stuff she did one year ago is old then FG is ancient. >That's what they're trying to do by releasing as much >of the commercial, mainstream-type songs from her album. Thanks, if you read this far. > >Sincerely, >Ripiano > Once again I think this make no sense from AR's perspective. The new FG and YWMFM are extremely similar. Instead of showcasing Jewel's talents, AR is pigeon-holing her with these lite-pop ballads. If you want to showcase Jewel's talents release one of her rock songs such as Carnivore, Satellite, (the electric) Run Tonto Run, Love Me Just Leave Me Alone or (the sped-up) Jessica. They have done all they could to push her towards the mainstream and increase sales. Want proof that her target audience has changed? Look at the radio stations that play Jewel. Here in Boston, the first two station's to play Jewel were WBCN and WXRV. WBCN broadcasted the concert that became "Jewel Rocks the Paradise" and recorded "Emily" at their studios. WXRV played WWSYS when POY first came out in February of '95. They played the Jaun Patino remix of YWMFM and they even played "Emily" and "Have a Little Faith in Me." Now neither of these stations play her at all. Why? WBCN is a rock station. WWSYS barely made their playlist and YWMFM wasn't even close. Now, they don't even play WWSYS anymore. WXRV considers itself "Adult Alternative" and the new YWMFM and FG were too mainstream for their tastes. (this is a station that was playing O.M.C.'s "How Bizarre" and "Push" by Matchbox 20 over a year ago. Want more proof of the pop-ballad angle? What songs were added to the POY vinyl? Racecar Driver? My Own Private God's Gift to Women? (both of these were on StL). When YWMFM took off, Atlantic figured the could squeeze another song out of POY so the redid FG and got it on the Batman & Robin Soundtrack. Yes, Atlantic took a chance on Jewel. Yes, they stuck with her when POY was struggling. However, now they have made plenty of $$$ off of Jewel's talents and are getting everything they can. Why force her to be judged on things she did almost three years ago when she has written over 100 songs in the meantime. She has expanding we writing talents to include more Rock, Blues, and Country sounds, but is this the side of Jewel Atlantic is giving us? No, instead I expect a new version of Don't to come out this fall (don't get me wrong, I love this song, but I don't see how will help Jewel in the long run.) I have been privileged to see Jewel in concert twelve times. Every time I see people blown away by the songs they have never heard before and surprised by the range of talents _not_ showcased on POY. I don't blame Jewel or Lenedra (both have been very good to the EDA's and me personally). I think they feel they owe Atlantic for the support they gave Jewel. However, I think it is time Jewel goes to Atlantic and tells them what _she_ thinks is best for her career. Sorry for the length, but these ideas have been cooped up in me for some time. I'm sorry, but I can't abide by someone defending Atlantic Records, especially for how they've handled Jewel's new album. There are few worse record companies, as far as supporting and marketing an artist, as Atlantic (Elektra being an example of a worse label). Atlantic's been getting undeserved props lately for their "undying support of Jewel" and their past "great marketing of Tori Amos." Bull. They've just been damn lucky that they happen to be home to two of the most prominent women in music today, especially in this age of Lilith Awareness. They deserve no credit for being a great label however. They have made so many mistakes in their marketing that I'm impressed anyone wants to sign to them anymore. Take King's X. Heard of them? No? Well, those of you who know and love the band can understand my dismay with those "PR geniuses" at AR. This is a great band with alot of talent, great lyrics, and greater vocals. Ty Tabor is widely regarded as one of the finer guitarists out there today. But why haven't you heard of them? I mean, you know, they've already released 6 albums on Atlantic. Where can you find them? Try the cut-out bin, where they ended up as a result of Atlantic's total cluelessness as to how to market them. Sure, they still release their records, but all that says is that they have deep pockets to make up for their empty heads. Y Kant Tori Read was Atlantic's fault. Oh but they fixed their mistake and look at Tori now, right? No, they simply did the most cost effective thing to do with an artist upon whom they weren't getting much of a return on. Sent her to London. It's not label geniius that produced brilliant American music out of the UK. Ever heard of Jimi Hendrix? Tori's fame now is a product of her being as strong and focused a human being as she is, and a weak staff at AR who can't stand up against her. She's the reason for her fame, not AR. Jewel's new album should be out by now. I got the promo copy of PoY from a friend at a record store a week before the album was officially released. I've had it for @2 years+ by now. in that time, I've heard singles released for three songs off an album that holds a good 5 or 6 potential "singles." Why haven't those been released? There's been plenty of time for it. I heard YWMFM a loooooong time after WWSYS for the first time on the radio. WWSYS got enough airplay to warrant a new single faster than YWMFM was released. Why wait so long? Milk it for every cent it's worth. Oh, but the rest of the world is only just being introduced to Jewel. No, it's not. I was in Indonesia last summer and saw quite a bit of the WWSYS vid on MTVAsia. So they knew about Jewel, they just couldn't get the album. Why not? Oh yeah, cuz AR wants to hype her up as much as possible before releasing PoY overseas to get the maximum profit. Jewel has enough material for her to be in the proccess of preparing her 3rd album by now, but she's not. Hmmm, wonder why? Cuz Atlantic wants to make as much money as possible on PoY before releasing a new album, which we know will sell, since we've heard the material that should be on it, and we know it's not as weak as what was on Fairweather Johnson. The new Jewel album could be a double album, and she'd still have plenty of unreleased material. Take a band like Phish. They're still sticking songs that are 5+ years old on their newest releases, because they still have alot of great old material that they haven't put to tape yet. And as a result, thy can and do churn out a new release every 2 years or less. Same as Jewel. How many songs does she have? Dave Matthews Band does the same thing. They aren't dealing with the whole "well, they haven't been introduced overseas yet" thing. They're just putting out albums and keeping their fans happy. And neither band is on a great label either (especially Phish). Want a good label? Ever hear of Sony? And all their sunbsidiaries? Like the WORK group, home of darling Fiona Apple . They released her album at a low price with multimedia extras, and marketed her through singles and videos well. Arista has done the same thing with Sarah McLachlan (granted, with Nettwerks help). moe. is on Sony. Really good idea. Set them up on Furthur, marketed them to the Phish crowd, tried the single, didn't work, so went with what was good. Epic handles tons of left-field acts with style. They don't pull the money grubbing crap that AR does. They do good. Lets hope they snag Jewel from the oppressive grasp of Atlantic and saves her soul. And lets us hear her music (hey Atlantic, nice job blocking her webcast performance). BTW, no I don't work for Sony. I just know they do their work well.
