I wouldn't miss it for anything! The incredibly beautiful environment is worth the trip alone. Add the talents of the performers and the chance to hang out with EDAs (some of the coolest people on the planet) and you have a formula for one of the most memorable experiences of a lifetime! Who all is planning on going? I'm thinking that some carpools might be in order to help out people who need a ride. Earlier this summer, Larry Greenfield, invited me to visit him in LA to see four concerts in four days. I had just returned from seeing Jewel in Berlin and told Larry that I couldn't afford to make another trip. Larry's response was "Just come...You'll never get the time back." I forgot about all my "reaonable" reasons why I couldn't go and went for it. Needless to say, I had the time of my life and stayed nearly a month. I had many wonderful experiences, saw 15 concerts, met about 50 fantastic EDAs, got a great job and decided to move to LA. In short, as Joseph Campbell used to say, "Follow yor bliss" and see you at Adrian's Livingroom Concert on August 29th and Indian Summerstock on Salt Spring Island on August 30th! Jewel will not disappoint her fans, I'm sure." EDA 4-Ever, Steven, the Angel from Mars<< Atlantic Records is one of the boldest and best of the the major record labels. I know it's hard to wait for Jewel's next album but what they're doing is more than what most people think. The immediate response to why AR is taking so long to allow her to start/finish recording her next album is that they want to ride her success all the way to the bank. That is probably true...to a point. The AR marketing machine also want to make an artist with longevity. An artist who's next 10 albums will sell the way they are at a career peak. Hootie and the Blowfish's, "Cracked Rear View" was AR's last major success story. But what happened to the follow-up of "Fairweather Johnson" which did half the sales? It's all PR. To create a legend you have to create the presence of greatness which means massive PR. It's hard to believe, especially to this list, but Jewel is a "new artist" to most of the world. My brother is in Spain right now and he says that most people have never even heard of her. In fact, he recently caught a commercial of her "New Release" POY. I told him to 'get on it and get those people buying her CD. There are 4 million+ people dying for her next LP.' I also believe that AR is making a song base that is easily identifiable to Jewel. You could be walking through some department store when suddenly you hear the intro bass line to "WWSYS" and you don't have to even hear the rest. You know what that song is, who sang it, what album it's on and so forth. AR wants to create the type of artist that is recognized by their image AND their songs. Not very many people know offhand who sang "Video Killed the Radio Star," unless you watch VH-1 or just into music trivia, but everyone knows who sang "Hotel California" just by listening to the first chord of the song. That's what they're trying to do by releasing as much of the commercial, mainstream-type songs from her album. Each of her singles are hits with pop hooks that showcase her talent. Why did they change "Foolish Games" from the original version? Because the LP version wasn't fit for radio play just as what they did with "YWMFM." In any case, I'm done rambling on. I couldn't sleep and Steve's post caught my eye. Thanks, if you read this far. Ok, here's the deal -- there are a number of EDA's that will be attending the show, so of course we all have to get together!!!! Once again Tammy and I are inviting attending EDAs to our house for a pre-show BBQ. We live about 10 miles (20 minutes) from the venue, so it's a short drive. However, this gathering will not be of the magnitude that our past events have been, there are a few unusual rules -- (1) Please no "pre-cleared" non-EDA guests -- please (2) We are having a "potluck" BBQ -- which means you really should bring something. A&P is right down the corner if you just want to buy something. (3) This is not a normal gathering, so don't expect alot -- it is just a bunch of friends getting together before a show. Schedule of events: 2:00pm -- Gather at our house and fire up the BBQ 6:00pm -- Lawn seat people should make their way to the venue, I will probably follow shortly after 8:00pm -- show begins For those not planning to attend our BBQ, but do want to meet at the show we should probably set a meeting place at the venue. That will be decided later. What I need from you is a quick e-mail letting us know your plans (i.e., will you be at the BBQ or just show). Please e-mail myself at neoblcar@aol.com or Tammy at tlcathome@aol.com Can't wait to see ya there! -- Rob ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Aug 1997 08:45:57 -0400 (EDT) From: MBrytEyes@aol.com Subject: Re: important Jewel Shit In a message dated 97-08-20 03:58:35 EDT, you write: << Subj: Re: important Jewel Shit Date: 97-08-20 03:58:35 EDT From: DMRock73@aol.com Sender: owner-jewel@smoe.org To: jewel@smoe.org >> I had to post this..I apologize for how this will sound....but how can anyone put the two words "Jewel" and "s**t" in the same phrase? First, I must mention that I had the very great pleasure of hosting Tegan, Tom and Rachel for their Montreal visit, which was a total delight for me. Tegan attended the show with me, while Rachel and Tom painted the town red (well, a visible shade of pink, anyway...) In spite of dire predictions of rain, the weather was sunny and dry and the rain never showed. I'll leave out comments on all the other performers, but the quality of all the performances was very high indeed. (I particularly liked Dayna Manning as the most pleasant surprise for me) Jewel was wearing her black pants, black leather shirt outfit, as she wore on the Intiomate and Interactive broadcast. She also wore really glittery eye shadow, which dripped little sparkly stuff all over her face. I found it slightly distracting. Relaxed, charming, very engaged, funny, and in fine voice; it was a real Jewel experience. Won over much of the crowd, drawing some of the only few spontaneous standing ovations. Tegan said it was a better performance than either Toronto shows. (The fact that we were in the second row, dead centre, didn't hurt much either...) You're no doubt wondering about song #3 listed above. She introduced it explaining that (as we all know) her boyfriend is from Quebec. "He taught me five words in French, which I made a song out of. It's a very dumb song. It's stupid and illiterate. You're going to laugh, and I'm going to be embarassed." Well, she was right on all counts ;-) My translation follows: I love you, I love you, I love you, my angel I love you, I love you, I love you, my angel I'm cold. Keep quiet. I'm cold. Keep quiet. I'm cold. Give me your (she mumbles here. She may have meant to say Give me your coat) I'm cold. She then cut it off, saying "okay, you get it." You can well imagine how this went over: the crowd went nuts. The expression she was using for 'keep quiet' resembles, but is not as harsh as, the expression for 'shut up'. (Wonder what this reveals about their relationship? Break out the Freudian readers everybody!) She also dedicated the last song to the Francoeurs (Michel's family) Other highlight. She not once, but twice, totally forgot the words to Emily, asking the crowd for help once, and then repeated part of a verse quickly and quietly to herself to remember how it went. Still charming when she does that. That's about it. Thanks to Tegan, Tom and Rachel (and Ricky, who was sitting behind us for the show) for making the weekend a fuller EDA experience for me. (We also watched Intimate and Interactive together.) Have a great evening everyone. Hope to see many of you in Boston next week. Hi all! I'm new here and I just want to ask of everyone, whould you help a dirt poor EDA? I have almost nothing of hers except for VH1 Hard Rock Live, All of her videos, MTV Unplugged, MTV Movie Awards, SNL , her performance of WWSYS at Rockfest, POY (of course), WWSYS single and the BMAR soundtrack, which I must say was a waste of money because all of the other tracks on it sucked! I'm addicted and I need more. Please e-mail me with any info on anything you've got other than what I've got listed. I'll pay any price for the supplies and mailing cost. Thanks so much! Well...I don't have a whole lot to say about it, just that its an idea that some EDAs and myself have been working on. The idea is basically that every EDA should have some kind of jewelry that they could wear to proudly display they're EDAship. JEWELry is a cleaver name I thought of to call this. It just came to me one day, and I decided to run with it. Some of you may know, but most of you probably don't, Jewel is supposed to be coming out with her own line of merchandise, so we DO NOT want to compete with her line, so this project will be COMPLETELY non-profit. As you all know, the EDA family is growing closer and closer everyday, and we've got so many wonderful things from the list. EDA guitar pics, posters, t-shirts, angelfood, JEWEL, and now we hope to create JEWELry. The idea is still in its beginning, and I need to make contact with Jewel's management to get the go-ahead on making the JEWELry. This will be COMPLETELY non-profit. If you have any futher questions, please direct them to me, and I will attempt to answer them if I can. If you would like to volunteer your services (making some JEWELry ideas), please make your product and mail it to me, so I may evaluate it, and submit it to the decision committee. This really surprised me. Did the writer just have a problem w/her or is she really taht way? I had always liked her because she didn't seem to be that concerned with selling. I have a few questions here, so if you have an answer please E mail me. On my POY CD, YWMFM is not as loud as some of the other songs and I was wondering if the CD is "wearing out." Is that possible? Secondly, I heard something about Jewel returning to the studio in July 1998 to re-record some tracks for the up coming album, "Fritz Creek Store," but when she was at Rockfest, she said she might return to the studio in February 1998. Has the new album release date been pushed back again? MTV Viewers Choice and MOM 2 CD: Help! Jewel is in fourth (4th!) place in the voting. VOTE!!! Also, MTV News says that the MOM 2 is scheduled for release next week. Thanks for reading my message, and VOTE!
