The MTV Asia Live and Intimate was a via satellite press conference between Jewel in Planet Hollywood, Toronto and the Singapore press at MTV Studio, Singapore. It is probably different from the Much Music, VH1 and any other MTV broadcasts. As best I can figure, it must have been 15 August about 9:00 a.m. Toronto time. Hope I've been able to help. Thanks to all the people that care. May Angels smile upon you, Joe de Leon The Flip Angel Peace and Prayers She only played a few songs and spent most of the time answering questions. Jewel is interested in doing movies because the rest of her creative body is "atrophying." She did a screen test with Ang Lee (I think that's what she said) for a period piece set in the Civil War. The part she tested for was the female lead! I got to watch the copy this morning (that's just before midnight for North Americans). Sorry, but my copy is not so clear. (Sorry Mr. BB). If any EDAs are still interested, please feel free to e-mail me. Please send your complete address so that when I make one trip to the post office they can do the math for me. (if you have angelfood, we can trade so its simpler)! VHS tapes aren't too expensive here, so I'll only be asking for money to ship the stuff one way and the price of the tape. ____________________________________________________________________ Get free e-mail and a permanent address at http://www.netaddress.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Jul 1997 04:21:30 -0700 From: Richard Enlow Subject: New Angel Hi EDA's, I'm new to the list I just Subscribed two days ago but have been a big fan of Jewel Since after Who Will Save Your Soul. The only problem is I only have one music source for Jewel "Pieces of You" I want to hear her other songs not released or rarities. I heard somewhere she has like over 80 songs on different tapes, rare cd's, and recorded live. I really don't know where to find this stuff so can someone please send me some Angel Food I would Appreciate it very much! Thanks! Richard ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Aug 97 20:22:39 GMT From: st_kuo@ix.netcom.com Subject: R.S.'s Backstage at Lilith/More Negativity on Jewel I just came back from the SuperCrown bookstore and I've read Rolling Stone's article on the backstage of the Lilith Fair. It was less of a review but more a vehicle for the writer to express his feelings toward this whole Lilith phenomenon. I'm not going to explain the details in that article (you can check it out now; it got Tu Wang Clan and Rage Against the Machine on the cover), but I just want to reveal what that R.S. article has to say about Jewel. I already noticed that something was wrong as I was reading about the supposedly "inside story" that the writer was trying to provide when he gave his take on the various personalities of Lilith performers. On to Jewel he described her as "stuck up." I was momentarily stunned. What made he think that Jewel has an ego problem? After I flipped the page I thought I got my answer of why the writer wanted to label Jewel as someone who has an ego trip. I don't really want to post what the writer claimed was a direct quote from Jewel because 1)I don't think the source was entirely reliable and 2)If she indeed made that comment, I'm sure she meant it well and not to put herself atop a pedestal. However, the writer has a different opinion and he even "blew up" the comment by enlarging the quote with a bold color and printed it on top of the next page. I'm afraid that since Rolling Stone has quite a circulation going, people are going to read it and form similar opinion as the writer himself (which is what he wants to do anyway). The media assault on Miss Kilcher is even more serious than I have foreseen... EDA 4-Ever, Steven, the Angel from Mars ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Aug 1997 01:23:18 -0400 From: David McCluskey <6djm@qlink.queensu.ca> Subject: Toronto Lilith Fair & more I just got back from the Toronto Lilith Fair, which was overall a great show. The major problem was: RAIN. I've never voluntarily been that wet in my life (yes, it was worse than swimming)! That's the last time I get lawn seats for anything I really want to see. Jewel's set was pretty much the same as it has been lately, and the crowd was definitely a 'Sarah crowd', but her performance was still great. The best surprises were during the Indigo Girls set, when Jewel & Sarah McLachlan came out to join them for a song (Water is Wide??), then many of the other performers came out as well, to perform 'Closer To Fine'. Jewel sang a verse of 'Closer To Fine' and yodeled (!) during it. It was great to see quite a few EDAs there since I'd never met anyone on the list before. I have to thank Tammy Campbell again for coming through with tickets (and for waterproofing my sister's bag, and for waterproofing my sister, and the binocular loan). Now, I'm just disappointed because it seems I'm the only one who doesn't get to go again tomorrow. I'm going on vacation for a week tomorrow, so I'll temporarily be off the list. If anyone has any TapeBag related problems, they can still mail me. I'm actively recruiting at least one new person to sign up for the Tape Bag, details are at http://qlink.queensu.ca/~6djm/tapebag/ See you all in a week! - -Dave McCluskey ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Aug 1997 23:17:43 -0700 From: Sinjin Subject: NJC: CLB at the Largo Well I just got back from my first and last Cindy Lee Berryhill show. The show was excellent...except for the last song. Before I explain, let me publicly say that JAMES REACH is now my public enemy #1, Dennis Harris has finally been dethroned (better watch your back James, or you might get some ice poured down it). Here's the entire humiliating story. CLB was putting on a great show when she decided for the final song she'd get James to play tamboreen on stage with her. Then James decided "Hey, there's enough embarrasment to go around...let's get Sinjin up here!" So he called me on stage, and after trying to hide in the shadows I realized I couldn't let a fellow EDA suffer alone so I had to make a fool of myself by playing christmas bells on stage. The only good thing is that no one had a camera this time to record the spectacle. Lucky for any other EDA's in the crowd I didn't see them or you can bet I would've called them onstage to suffer as a team. Another thing...by saying "and will take so long to turn them into one..." you make is sound like we're a cult, which we are definately not. Our main goal isn't to turn people into "one of us", like we were higher up or superior to everyone else. Our goal isn't to convert them...it's to show and spread the love we show to each other everyday (well, almost everyday) on the list. >I just think it's really great like this.. we all should get a Rolling >Stone cover.. We're not doing all these great things to be on the cover of any magazine. Does it really matter if we get publicity or not? Will we stop doing all these good things if we don't? Of course not! Being glad that you've helped out someone, or made someone feel better is reward enough. This list is open to everybody (well, almost everybody except that Burritohead guy). Don't automatically assume that they joined only because they heard of us from the media and don't even like Jewel as much as we do. This doesn't have to be you. HOW DO I TELL THE ACTS APART? You like rock 'n' roll, right? Well, this stuff's a lot like rock 'n' roll. Sort of. Sarah McLachlan: Remember that chick who was naked in her videos? Tough luck, buddy -- she'll be making eyes at her drummer instead. Jewel: She's the one with the hooters. Indigo Girls: Two of them, one might be blonde. They do that song, you know the one. Sounds something like what you'd hear at a UAW rally. Lhasa and Shawn Colvin: See stories. (You can read, can't you?) Meredith Brooks: Old. Does a lot of calisthenics. Alanis Morissette: No, that's not her. WHY THESE AREN'T THE SPICE GIRLS None of them do backflips. None of them have posed nude in any non-tasteful context. None of them have pierced tongues, as far as we know. None of them are "posh." None of them pretend to be teenagers. One item that was popular were the $3 plastic ponchos.=20 =A0 =A0After Bitch-rocker Meredith Brooks and folkie-with-an-attitude Shawn= Colvin did their main stage sets, the powerful Georgian duo Indigo Girls finally got the soggy crowd off their feet when they asked McLachlan and Jewel to join them for a stirring rendition of Water Is Wide.=20 =A0 =A0It was a slow, if beautiful, song but then Brooks joined "the gals" for= the rockier Closer To Fine and everyone got up to dance, giving Jewel a big cheer when she went into yodel mode.=20 =A0 =A0This all-star jam would later be repeated during McLachlan's encore, when she brought everyone out for Big Yellow Taxi, by the mother of all female singer-songwriters, Joni Mitchell.=20 =A0 =A0McLachlan, by the way, was in fine form last night, performing various selections off her last two albums, Fumbling Toward Ecstasy and Surfacing, including her latest hit single, Building A Mystery.=20 =A0 =A0Flanked by two huge black banners featuring Venus-like nude female forms and a green backdrop decorated with stars and mythical creatures, McLachlan seemed more confident and polished than she was at the first Lilith show.=20 =A0 =A0And frankly, the all-star jams seemed to be what were sorely missing at= the kick-off in The Gorge.=20 =A0 =A0The other notable perfomer of the evening was Colvin, who proved to be an effervescent entertainer just as the sun began to finally shine through the overcast sky.=20 =A0 =A0"It looks like its clearing up for the lawn people," Colvin joked.= "They're a hearty, rugged bunch. I myself am a chairperson."=20 =A0 =A0Lilith Fair wraps up its 35-date North American trek in McLachlan's hometown of Vancouver on Aug. 24.=20 =A0 =A0With 98% of the tickets sold along the way, it's the most successful= music festival of the summer.=20 =A0 =A0Despite earlier saying that Lilith would welcome men in its second year, McLachlan told reporters backstage she has changed her mind.=20 =A0 =A0"I considered it at one point, but I just realized that this is so wonderful the way it is; it's like, don't fix it if it's not broke," she said. "This is our first year and it's been just a wonderful success on every level, and I think it would be a real shame to change the idea."=20 =A0 =A0McLachlan added she hopes to expand Lilith next year by making it two= weeks longer, adding more Canadian dates and maybe even travelling to England, Australia and other parts of Europe.=20 =A0 =A0As for the hype surrounding women in music as a result of Lilith,= McLachlan said: "I think with the media there's always been a need to lump everybody together. I think we all look very forward to a time when we're not called women musicians, we're just called musicians."=20 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Aug 1997 16:10:53 -0400 From: C Marks Subject: Re: MTV video music awards st_kuo@ix.netcom.com wrote: > I went to www.mtv.com and I tried to vote for Jewel's video in the > Viewer's > Choice section. Only Dave has posted about it so far and his review was brief and all too rain related! Regarding the rain: There's no need to thank me for sending the rain away. I just thought "enough is enough" and I saw to it that all you lawn folks got a chance to dry off. (If you don't have the foggiest what I'm talking about, just ask those in my section who the master of rain is!) Well the B-stage became the mainstage when they tore it down and transferred the acts to the mainstage. I think it had something to do with all that electronic equipment out in the rain and no one scheduled to use that big ol' stage for several hours. So the first transferred act was Lhasa, a traditional Spanish music performer accompanied by upright bass, accordion, and flamenco guitar. She was really enjoyable and I was disappointed when they only performed two songs. (We lost a lot of time transferring the B-stage acts and it had to be made up somewhere.) Then came Dayna Manning. Surprisingly, she opened with her single (the name of which escapes me at the moment). She played a good little set and she really warmed up the crowd. It'll be interesting seeing her grow over the years as she's -- well she's my age -- 19! Following her was Julia Fordham on the Village stage. I got to listen to her as I waited in line waiting for food that they no longer had. "Well what DO you have?", I said pleadingly to the cashier. Ms. Fordham wasn't my cup of tea. Her voice was a little nasal as I recall and I just didn't get hooked by her music. No matter though because in that futile line I met Dave McCluskey, Tom (Miles (?) ), and Gian (funny, he doesn't look like a Spice Girl) Covello (sp?). I got back to my seat two songs into Meredith Brooks' set. If you like Meredith Brooks, this was a good set. If you don't, that's nobody's problem but your own. (I am of the latter.) The Wild Strawberries followed. They're one of the those bands that I'd like if I knew a band member, but I don't so my opinion of them is lukewarm. But they did perform well and their singer was not encumbered by her second trimester tummy. (Maybe it was just me, but I think they went over the 30 minute mark for their set: not a good move when things are 15 minutes behind schedule already.) Shawn Colvin followed and she was AMAZING!!! I read a post once where someone said she's Jewel at 40 and last night I realized how true that is! Her set was warm and strong and well-rehearsed. It really spoke highly of the musicianship of she and her electric guitarist and bass player that her drummerless set rocked so well. It is arguable that the Indigo Girls stole the show. I was only familiar with a couple of their songs but I liked them and their set was just SO good. (They had Sara Lee of Ani DiFranco fame playing bass for them.) Of course they brought out Jewel and Sarah for the last couple of songs and yes Jewel yodeled through a bit of "Closer to Fine". Jewel's set was good if unsurprising. She opened with Near You Always, (with the first verse a cappella). Then she played Deep Water after a spiel about hope and such. I think it was lost on the Sarah-crowd so it was a bit embarassing. So I've finally heard "Down" and I swear that's going to be the first single off the new album. I'll leave set lists up to other people because I don't remember the order of the 13 songs she played. I really like Satellite with the band accompanying her and the cello solo in Dancing Barefoot had me searching the stage for another guitar player for the first two bars. "Stranger (Return from the East)" was introduced as a brand new song, but seeing as she changed some lyrics, I guess what we'd heard before was a song in progress. Like I said, it was a good set with very little banter (for Jewel) and except for a (new jumbo-type standard tuned definitely NOT Big Blue) guitar not playing through the PA for a couple of bars in one tune, things went off without a hitch. Sarah McLachlan opened with Hold On. And a predictable, albeit very good set followed. The people behind me suddenly found something to be enthusiastic about after shouting at my row to sit down and muttering things throughout Jewel's set. I guess according to them, the concert was a bunch of people opening for Ms. McLachlan, but let's move on. Sarah's performance was just damn good and there's really not much more to be said. If you saw the I & I on Much, then take that, add 15000 people and back up really far... There, that was her Lilith set. She came out for an encore of "Ice Cream" (title?) and then all the performers came out and did "Big Yellow Taxi". And I met a horde of EDAs!!! Unfortunately, due the whole presentation of everybody as a horde, I remember only a handful of names. (I remember many more faces, but those don't really do me much good here in text-land!) But we shall meet again, and practice makes perfect!
