Winds of 65 mph and 3 inches of rain in twenty minutes. The asphalt walkways turned into miniature spillways, the water was up to my calf in some places. :) To give you an idea of the size of the crowd, they ran out of parking spaces. Ticket holders were unable to park. They will get a refund of the ticket price. Even local media was turned away. The official paid attendance figure published in today's Post Gazette was 26,618. Not shabby - few shows come close to this figure. I have two complaints about the concert. The first being the shortened sets played by the bands. Shawn Colvin opened the main stage festivities with only a half hour set. Sarah McLachlan's set wasn't much longer, nor was Jewel's. As this wasn't quite an "all day" affair, it is understandable but disappointing. My second complaint was the sound system sucked. It wasn't bad for the Pavilion or "Lawn Chair" area, but if one strolled the walkway about midway in the aqua shed, the performance was barely above the background level of crowd noise. I will say this - Jewel had one heck of a light show! (lightning big time!) NP: "Another Long One" : Shawn Colvin : _Live '88_ - -!- ViaMAIL!/WC4 v1.30 ! It takes a heck of a lot of time, people, and energy to put together just one concert. Just think of that and multiply it by the mumber of shows that Jewel has put on this year alone. Not to mention the fact that she is probably booked up well into next year. I'm sure she would love to put on a show for us but it's not like she can just fly out to wherever and put on a show whenever she wants. She has committments and a lot of things to do. Remember she is also in the process of putting out a new album which is in itself a huge task. Don't blame her or her mamgers for what is out of their control. Music is a business and in business you can't always do the things you wan't to do because you're to busy doing the things you have to do. This doesn't mean that a Jewelstock 2 is impossible it's just not going to happen any time soon, So, be patient and I'm sure Jewel will give us the recogonition she wants to give us. Pieces of Me (sic) never really crossed into the international market, so the only songs I knew in advance of the show were the radio singles, notably the truly brilliant "You Were Meant for Me." Jewel's strength as a concert performer rests on her subtle guitar work and her songwriting, but above all else on her remarkable, liquid voice, which ripples and builds before swelling to a crest. On "Who Will Save Your Soul" Jewel showed that she has vocal prowess to carry an occasionally clumsy lyric. Her vocal style is a peculiar cross between the lushness of a torch singer's - -- toward which Jewel clearly has aspirations -- and the urgency of a modern singer/songwriter. And, of course, she can yodel like nobody's business. Dressed in a classy red dress, Jewel emanated style and stage experience that belied her youth. She will clearly be with us for some time. - ------- Nice to hear from one not already enamored by Jewel. Hey, I resent that...I'm rather new to this list(less than a month), and I consider myself an EDA to the heart. My friend Dennis got me started on Jewel...I amplified the feeling, and I found the mailing list address. I told him about it and after he's got email, he's gonna be on again too. I don't have much to offer about Jewel, but I love her music and I think her poems are tremendous! Even though I've only been on the list for a short time, I love you all like I love my own family. There are some immature people in the world, but even those people wouldn't put up with 75-150 email messages/day just to harass some individuals :) Ok, now for the permissions part of my email...I'm writing a Jewel page, and I was going to have links to some other EDA's webpages/JewelPages...but 'I' am forcing myself to ask for permission first. It just seems like the polite thing to do...ask for one's permission to put a link to one's webpage. Whoever would like a link, please respond(privately please to reduce bandwidth of list and reduce Mike's job) to this with your name(what you'd like to be called), and your webpage URL. Thank you very much :) ok, finally for my cool idea...I don't know how many of you use ICQ, a program made by Mirabilis Inc.(http://www.mirabilis.com), but they have Users lists and I was curious if anyone'd like to join me in making a Jewel ICQ users list...I'd like to do it, but if nobody else is willing, then I feel it's kinda stupid to just make a list with one person on it(if you get what I mean) :) Email me privately if you're interested, or if you'd like more info. After work I was able to record the Jewel Live and Intimate (10 pm Philippine Time; that's about 9am Canada time). She was incredibly sweet and looked a little sleepy. Even if she had not slept she gave incredible performances and honest, dare I say it, inspiring answers. Jewel performed a few songs: 1. Near You Always 2. WWSYS 3. YWMFM 4. Angels Standing By 5. Foolish Games In between she answered a few questions fielded by members of the Singaporean press. Jewel picked the winner for a Planet Hollywood Singapore Contest. Highlights of the interview: Jewel handled the press quite well. Unfortunately these media people were a little shy at first. Jewel's answers tended to be shorter than these people were used to. She was very nice to them and answered most queries, except one on "foot massages" (she begged off quite charmingly). Some questions were insightful (some were not)and Jewel's responses were consistently intelligent, honest and often wise. Upon request, and a "I don't really understand why people love this so much," she yodeled for Asia. About Love- She admitted that she has a boyfriend(Michel, a French Canadian). They've been together about two years. About the movies- She likes doing soundtracks because she can take a moral perspective other than her own. She also did a screen test for the female lead in a future movie project set in the past. About touring- JEWEL IS COMING TO ASIA IN OCTOBER!! End of News Flash. Into the Personals... Any EDAs that want a VHS tape of this performance, it's about 45 mins. long, e-mail me privately and we'll figure something out. If you wait till Monday, I'll probably have the MTV Unplugged ready too. Request to all EDAs, please pray that Jewel comes by the Philippines. Even if she tours Asia, I am worried that she might skip my poor country for the bigger markets like Singapore. The Indigo Girls rocked the hill, building the crowd into a frenzy precipitating Jewel's arrival on stage. They brought Jewel and Sarah onto stage for a breathtaking rendition of a song I did not recognize, and the entire cast of ladies onstage for "Closer to Fine", including a yodel by the present Alaskan. =) Although Jewel was accompanied by the storm, a big ass bucket full of rain poured down on us, precipitating her performance (pun intended!) and setting the atmosphere (pun intended again!) for a no-holds-barred show. Boy, did it rain! =) Jewel, in best form, not only stole the show, but did without pause. Jewel took the stage with a passion that I have not seen to date. Her voice ran across octaves, plunged through cynicism, and left no questions about who was queen vocalist. Although hard put to keep up with Jewel, the fantastic band gave it everything they were worth, complimenting Jewel with cello, piano, percussion, and various guitars in an awesome aural array. This was truly a show to see. =) Austin H. Mandryk stated about the Scranton rendition of Foolish Games: > (halfway through, it was all i could do to > keep my binoculars from shaking off my face).Truly, this Foolich Games brought a few tears to my eyes. In my eighteen months on this list I have kept a closed mouth on alot of anti-popularity posts. I want to state right here and now that the experience of 20,000 people singing along to every word and emotion of Foolish Games is enough to bring even Sean Hooks to his knees. From hearing Jewel in coffee shops to the intensity of Jewel's performance at Scranton, I can say that this girl has come a very long ways, but she is every bit her destiny's mistress. In other words, in case anyone has a doubt, JEWEL ROCKS!! She can rock with the best of them, no questions. Her headlined show should be a real treat! =) Hmmm... I need tickets..... =) Be an Angel Every Day ! =) Crunch! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Aug 1997 20:42:46 -0400 From: Seth Fulmer Subject: Jewel MIDI files Hello EDAs, I'm curious...Does anyone know of anywhere I could find MIDI files for all the songs on the POY CD? I'm making a Jewelpage, and I have the discography for that CD(b/c that's the only one I have so far). Well, I have the MIDI(or at least one version) of YWMFM, but I'd like the rest...I wanna put a link for each of the songs, to it's appropriate MIDI file(if they even exist). If not, then YWMFM will be alone. No prob w/ that :) Anyways, if someone finds something cool along those grounds, could you please let me know? Thanx a bunch from one Angel to another :) TTYL :) Seth Fulmer A.K.A. Jewel is currently at #8 on VH1's Top Ten Countdown, and the person hosting said that Jewel has been talking to movie executives lately and has shown interest in going into movies. Here is what she said about Jewel: "...Counting Crows even moonlighted as Jewel's debut band for her Tonight Show appearance. Now that's what friends are for. Well, remember I told you there was another chick who had her eye on the silver screen? Just so happens to be Jewel... Apparently she's been approached by some Hollywood types, to see if she might be possibly be intersted in getting into acting. Well, Jewel says she'd rather concentrate on her music right now, and that could possibly be a very good thing for Renee Zelwegger, who I'm convinced is her twin sister. Anyway at number 8, her she is, the lady who's just, you know...kicking butt all over America. This is Jewel." Here is the rest of the songs on the countdown: 10. Wallflowers "One Headlight" 09. Hanson "Where's the Love?" 08. JEWEL "FOOLISH GAMES" 07. Dave Matthews Band "Crash Into Me" 06. The Vervepipe "The Freshman" 05. The Spice Girls "2 Become 1" 04. OMC "How Bizarre" 03. Shawn Colvin "Sunny Came Home" 02. Third Eye Blind "Semi-Charmed Life" 01. Merideth Brooks "Bitch" Mark - --- Inside my heart there's an empty room. I thought Jewel was going to play in St. Louis on Sept. 11, so why isn't she? Does anyone why this change was made. This was going to be my first Jewel concert ever. I had major plans around this, and was extremely excited about seeing her. I called the Fox theatre where she was soposed to perform, and they acted like I was an idiot for thinking that Jewel had ever planned to play there. How can she disapoint her fans by cancelling a show in an area she rarley visits to play in a place where the people are spoiled with so many Jewel concerts? Don't take this personally, but I am seriously pissed of at the New England EDA's right now. So, can anyone tell why my fall was ruined? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Aug 1997 18:39:11 -0700 From: That Little Voice Inside Your Head Subject: NJC:CRAZY LORA'S B-DAY BASH OF HORROR! So we have something to munch on at the party, me, Natalie, and my pal Kaylene, will be preparing bowls of cereal, and it would be greatly appreciated if some of you would bring paper bowls. Also, does anyone have a blowhorn? That would be easier instead of me having to yell to 50 people! I forgot who it was, but someone mentioned they could bring a sound system, and that's fine, as long as you have some way to battery operate it or plug it in, and Natalie's grandma will help with that. Any hoo, you also should bring sleeping bags, poetry you have written, presents ;), and if you live semi close to OB, bring some chips and such to share, if you have any ideas like games, and stuff like that for the party, e-mail me!
