Well, they finally had an update in today's paper about a 'Live' Lilith CD (more on this in a separate post) and the almost week-late review of Jewel (condensed at that). This critic's name is Diana Penner and this is what she had to say: "Sorry, Jewel fans: Technical difficulties and time and space constraints prevented a review of her solo performance. Here's a condensed version: Jewel broke abruptly from the festival's largely organic mood, sauntering out in a slinky red dress and heels, crooning Gershwin's 'Summertime'. It was the highlight of her set, which otherwise featured pleasant pop-rock long on catchiness but short on depth. If I'd had my druthers, the legendary Emmylou Harris, whose repertoire encompasses more years than Jewel has lived, would have preceded Jewel and been allocated 50 minutes with just 35 for Jewel." Unless I was dreaming Emmylou DID precede Jewel. She tied for the lowest ratings among the performers reviewed. Sarah, The Indigo Girls and Emmylou Harris got four stars out of four. Lisa Loeb 3.5 stars, Kelly Willis 3 stars, Mary Black and Jewel 2.5 stars. Send this critic to the outhouse....judging by the crowd reaction there's no doubt who deserved the 50 minutes and four stars. - -Tom ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Aug 1997 18:05:37 -0500 From: twh662@juno.com (T H) Subject: 'Live' Lilith fair CD in the works and next year I don't know if this is old news or not, but here's some excerpts from today's paper: Speaking with reporters before Friday's (Indy) show, Sarah McLachlan, Lilith Fair-y godmother and consistent headliner of the festival tour, said an album of selected performances from the tour may be available by Christmas. She'll be seeking permission from individual artists' labels and choose which recordings to include. Sarah suggested there's enough for "one or more CD's." About next year, Sarah's building a base (of sponsors) for next year's tour, thanks to this summer's success. Speaking of next year, McLachlan again was asked about adding male artists. "I'm kind of wishy-washy about it," she confessed. Sometimes she wants to, but then she starts thinking about just how well things are going without them. She got a kick out of hearing that Beck would like to play Lilith. "That's really a nice feeling, to hear other artists say they want to be a part of this, " she said. I say keep it just lead female artists...it keeps it unique, not to mention attendance exceeded anything the critics thought.. - -Tom ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Aug 1997 15:51:09 -0000 From: "s. buell" Subject: I have a Jewelicious Idea!!! I don't know if you wall have seen the latest Entertainment Weekly, but it caught my eye today in the grocery store with a headline blaring: "JEWEL:CAN 5 MILLION FANS BE WRONG?" I had to find out what they'd been smoking so I read the article. You all should see it too, but I wouldn't encourage buying it. In the first place, I don't like the idea of music critics. Music is a subjective art form. People should listen to what makes a difference to them and take it at whatever value they think it deserves, not be propagandized by people they've never met. I know music critics won't just go away, and there are some good ones, so now I'll talk about the rest of the article. They picked the album apart, even calling the poetry in the liner notes "something you would find in a high school literary magazine". Jewel admits that the album is "young", but she should not be criticized for sharing parts of herself with the world. I am sure that if a friend shared songs or poems with that reviewer, they would surely not come down so harshly. Music should say what the artist feels, which is just what Jewel has done. They also seem to have forgotten that no one's talent can be judged by a single album. PoY isn't Jewel's full capabilities, we know that. But it is a valuable piece of what she has to say. In today's media-heavy society, many artists' hype is greater than their talent. We all see that evidenced with bands like the Spice Girls and Hanson (sorry to fans of both, I was faulting the media, not the artists!) Maybe the press is intimidated that there is an entertainer now who can match them blow for blow, winning the world over with her knockout punch. Maybe they're so surprised by a good role model and musician that they don't know what to do. Maybe they were desperate and wanted to say anything different than other magazines. I don't know where they came from, and I don't really want to, either. I do know that we don't love Jewel because a critic approves. We don't love Jewel because everyone else does. We love Jewel because she is what a good musician should be. We love Jewel because she is the epitome of an everyday angel. And we just love Jewel because she's Jewel. :-) Erin "The Girl With No Angel Nickname" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Aug 1997 18:21:36 -0400 (EDT) From: Linda Subject: Scranton Lilith Fair - thru my bleary eyes :) Well it rained.. which meant i couldn't see cuz my glasses were wet and there was nothing to dry it off on.. i love rain.. when i have an umbrella.. not when i just got back from the food tent with Tom with well over 10 bucks worth of food.. makes me cry when that food turns to rain soup :< Anyway.. it was fun! nice drive up there! (For you new folk, an explanation follows below) Quick explanation for the REALLY, REALLY new. EDA stands for EveryDay Angels...EDAs are members of this mailing list....Jewel herself dubbed us as EveryDay Angels :) We are going to wait until mid to late September before we launch the next order of picks so that the college folks get a chance. They were in school last April and May when this idea was born and were out of school (no more email for many) and it's only fair to let them in on it this time. We *will* make provisions for bulk orders too (some folk wanted 50 to 100 themselves), details on that will be announced when we launch the next order. Our plans are to order enough as to not have the quick sellout as before, and to again supply Jewel with a batch of them :) SPECIAL NOTE TO KRIS KANES' CUSTOMERS FROM THE FIRST ORDER: Kris IS going to get replacements NOW for the 100 picks he lost and he will contact you folk privately soon :) To see what the EDA Guitar Picks look like, check out: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/edapicks.jpg (note the actual picks differ slighly than as depicted on the above jpg. The desciption below is correct) THE STORY BEHIND THE PICKS: In early to mid-April, talk of what the list could give Jewel for her birthday surfaced, and MANY ideas came up. Two basically came to be. One was the actual star that was named for Jewel. (more on that later) The other was this EDA guitar pick thing. The idea was to make some guitar picks for Jewel, and to sell some to the EDAs. It was hoped to get them to Jewel by her birthday, but due to Murphy's Law, it was not to be. THE BRAND/TYPE OF PICK: The picks made are D'Adario brand, in the medium gauge. They are a pale yellow in color. On one side there is what we call the 'smoo' angel, and on the otherside, it says "We Are EveryDay Angels" and it has an 'illuminated' halo below the print. Both designs are by Dennis Harris. We consulted people in the Jewel camp on pick preferences, and we got these to match one of the styles of picks Jewel uses. We ordered 720 of them, 120 for Jewel as a present from the EDAs, 600 to sell to the EDAs. (They sold out in 36 hours!!) JEWEL'S OTHER EDA GIFT, THE STAR: In a nutshell, the EDAs also gave Jewel a real star for her birthday. A star in the middle of the 'bucket' of the Little Dipper is now and forever known as "Jewel Kilcher - Jewel of the North" (Well, forever on planet Earth anyway, the Klingons may call it D'Martog for all I know ;) To see more on the star gift, all you need to do is go to the page set up for it on Adam Longfellow's "Pieces Of Jewel" page at: http://home.sprynet.com/sprynet/xenomorph/birthday.htm Mike & Mandy :) **** The Jewel Mailing List Netiquette & New Member Guide is at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup Patty Griffin Tour Dates & more is at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/pattyg/patttour.htm Ducksoup@spectra.net DuckofPrey@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Aug 1997 20:20:14 -0500 (CDT) From: Tien Dang Subject: JC: Jewel in Rolling Stone (Sept 4) Hey EDAs, Hi, how's it going and stuff. Well gotta go now. :) EDA in Houston who now has about 20 magazines with Jewel in it :) Tien "Without you...Everything falls apart Without you...It's not as much fun to pick up the pieces"-NIN ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Aug 1997 21:23:21 -0400 From: Rael Subject: Jerry Moratta Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone else, who has seen the Indigo Girls during the LF tour, noticed Jerry Moratta is their drummer. Jewel recruited Jerry to play at Jewelstock. I was first introduced to Jerry through the music of Peter Gabriel. He is an incredible talent. At the Scranton show yesterday, it was nice to see Jerry and Jewel hanging together during the Indigo Girls "Closer To Fine", Jerry was out in front playing the mandolin on this song. Jewel stood next to him during the song and a few times put her arm around him and hugged him. Hmmm, I wonder if they will ever play together again? So true so true *EDAC* Did you know that there were people at the Nettwerk Booth at the Lilith Fair that knew about the EDA'S? my goodness there were also people in the borders tents and everything that knew about the EDA's... It's really cool and really bad actually.. bad because it's open to everyone and that means the list will get crowded with people that aren't truly EDA's.. and will take so long to turn them into one.. you know what i mean? some of the newbies never check out the FAQ.. and they post too much lalalala anyway it's really cool because those of us that have worked hard to give the EDA's a good name are finally getting the gratitude they deserve... Being in this group that is known for it's positive energy and great pureness really makes me feel better about myself.. and I showed my father the article about CLB and EH when they're all oohing and aahing over the EDA's and he has a great respect for them now. (And hey - every gathering I've gone to, I came back in one piece and had tonsa pictures) I just think it's really great like this.. we all should get a Rolling Stone cover.. but knowing them they'll call us all hippies crying cuz we missed Woodstock, trying to KEEP THE PEACE, etc... gosh.. dont you just love the cynic? (sharp sarcasm there..) hehehe just wanted to speak about this.. doesn't anyone else feel GREAT about this group? :) I LOVE YOU ALL!!! So I started sending mail to it. Well, I got a message saying it was from the wrong email address than was subscribed. Who was that person who owns the mailing list? I figured that person was an EDA because there was a thread about that a while ago. If you started the list, and are reading this, could you please email me? The email address that I was subscribed under is forwarded to another address which I use to mail to this list and to the poetry list. Thanx a bunch :) TTYL :) Seth Fulmer A.K.A. I've been depressed for weeks after finding out that Jewel wouldn't be appearing at the only Lilith Fair date in my area. Then I saw your note and gave ticketmaster a call and am now the proud owner of 2 tickets to see her on Aug 30th at the Bank Arts Center in Holmdel. Now I just have to figure out how the heck to get to Holmdel from where I am. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Aug 1997 18:16:52 -0700 From: "Adrian du Plessis" Subject: SJC + EDAC: EDAs and the Living Room Tour getting famous in Canada! The Georgia Straight, the top arts and entertainment weekly in Vancouver, Canada has just published the following article that mentions Jewel, the EDAs, Cindy Lee and Elizabeth and the Living Room Tours! SMALL-SCALE TOURING Long before she scored a platinum record, folk artist Jewel toured relentlessly, hanging out with fans and slowly building a following. Inspired by the singer-songwriter, folk artists and their fans are taking that grassroots approach one step further with the Living Room Tour. The idea is simple -- fans arrange private concerts in their living rooms and invited artists show up and play. The concept started in Boston earlier this year when San Diego-based songwriters Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel were asked by members of a Jewel Internet fan club called the Everyday Angels (EDAs) if they would do a small show in between gigs. The two played a four-hour private concert at a Boston house. Things went so well that the Living Room tour is now including stops around North America. On August 29, Salt Spring Island resident Adrian du Plessis will welcome Hummel and Berryhill into his living room. Everyday Angels from as far away as California will be making the trek to B.C. for the concert. "We'll probably have about half EDAs, and some people from the island here," du Plessis told the Straight. "It's not something you sell tickets to -- if there's more than 40 people, they are going to end up being pushed out of the house." For those who won't fit into his living room, du Plessis is also organizing an August 30 all-day concert on Salt Spring on the grounds of the Farmer's Institute, a section of the island set aside to ensure the continued existence of rural life. For more information on the concert which will feature Berryhill, Hummel, Vancouver's Ralph Alfonso and Salt Spring's Lisa Maxx, e-mail du Plessis at howenow@imagen.net by Mike Usinger, The Georgia Straight, August 14 1997 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Aug 1997 21:47:34 -0400 From: Lynne Toussaint Subject: RE: No JEWEL in FLORIDA! Some phrases that capture the day (you can only guess where these puppies came from! It'll be more fun. :) ) "Gee, where's the angels? Oh, I guess we are a bit late!" "Are we actually moving up in the line, or are we compacting?" "Here looks good. Thank God for tarps." "Who is this? DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHO THE PERSON ON STAGE IS?!?!?!?!?" "It's only drizzle." "Wet, anyone?" "I can't clap--I have to ring out my sleeves first." "Is it them [IG]? Oh, those are stagehands? I can't see ANYTHING!" "Barb, go away. Everytime you come over to visit, it RAINS." "UGH! More rain!!!" "CAn we stand on your tarp, girls?" "How many beers can one man drink?" "America would be a better place if there were more naked woman." "I can't see Jewel! You stupid tall people! MOVE!!!" "Binoculars, anyone?" "ME ME ME ME!!!" "Is this...is this...YES!! Morning song!!!" "Shhhhhhh. I'll kick you." "OW!!" "Ohhh! She's going to yodel!!!" "She's not done yodeling yet! Shut up!" "One wish. Women?" "Her voice." "Men?" "Her body." "Pigs." "Are you a les?" "No. Are you?" "I'm a MAN." "Truck stops. THey're not just for truckers anymore." "Heaven is--dry socks." "Can you watch my frog?" Anyway, it WAS a blast. But I've NEVER been so happy to lay down, in my life! PS I came close to having hypothermia.
