I took my two cousins, Shana (12) and Sierra (6), plus Shana's best friend Emily (12) to the Lilith Fair in Tinley Park, near Chicago. It was Sierra and Emily's first time to see Jewel live and Sierra's first concert ever. Jewel was absolutely fantastic! She began in a jazzy tone with "Summertime" from "Porgy and Bess", singing it as the spotlight followed her while she walked in from the edge of the stage. The highlite for me was an emotionally climactic version of "Foolish Games". The crowd response was overwhelming! It felt like the crowd was totally with her. She really rocked out last night! At one point, she played a gorgeous red sunburst electric Gibson (I think) and then on the next song switched to a black electric. I had seen Jewel at the Irvine California Lilith Fair a few weeks ago, but last night Jewel seemed to connect with the audience a lot better. Maybe, as the tour progresses, she's getting used to playing huge venues. Whatever the reason, the crowd response was much more enthusiastic that in Irvine. Afterwards, as we made our way out toward the parking lot, I noticed a door to the backstage area. We told the security guard that we were Everyday Angels and asked him to let Jewel know that we were hoping to see her. We waited and waited and waited. Eventually the three girls got down on their knees (I swear it's true) and prayed to their angels to let them meet Jewel. Finally, she appeared and was amazingly kind to all three of them. She showered them with love, giving them many big hugs, kisses and lots of affectionate words. She signed all three of their shirts and drew angels on them. Emily said afterwards that it was the first time in her life that she cried tears of happiness. It was a wonderful night, to be long remembered. Young Kristen Faith was not discovered by a group of children swimming in the pool, as reported by[the reporter] Kristen was discovered by her father Rick. He pulled her out and helped perform CPR on her. Just prior to that, my husband left the pool to return some belongings home. It is not several blocks from the pool, but just across the street. I never left the pool until my husband got back, and I saw Kristen wasn't with him. Only then did I leave the pool to check if maybe she had followed him out and he just didn't know it. That's when he found her. It was only a matter of minutes. I'm know living with the truth that it only takes a second. I turned my back on Kristen just long enough to let a friend know we'd give her a ride home. That was the only time I ever let her out of my sight. I had been holding her on my lap minutes before. Not one person out of 15-20 people who were there saw her fall in the water. Kristen was always the center of attention wherever she went. I blame no one. I can't. I can only hold onto the facts. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ has sustained my familly through this tragic time in our lives. He is our strength and refuge from the storm. he know holds little Kristen Faith in his hands. I take comfort in that. Kathy ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Aug 1997 10:45:39 -0400 From: tayamaj@nationwide.com Subject: Polaris Lilith show Amazing. So I've broken the review into THREE pieces in the hopes that I can successfully violate several copyright laws. It's been simmering for a couple of months, but the Jewel backlash is obviously beginning to boil over. From the barbs in Spin to the less-than-enthusiastic responses to her Time cover story (and selectively infantile responses to the Details cover), Miss Kilcher has begun a new phase in celebritydom: the popular backlash. Such is a consequence of a multi-platinum record. Here, for your reading displeasure, is Entertainment Weekly's August 15th review of the "Pieces of You" double LP re-release ... - ----- Part I.a GOING TO "PIECES," AGAIN Now that 1995's "Pieces of You" is being reissued as a two-LP set, we thought it was time to reappraise jewel. The vinyl exam shows she still has a lot to learn. By David Brown Rock critics may not always share the tastes and sensibilitites of the average citizen, but here's one example where the twain did indeed meet. Like 95 percent of the population, I paid little mind to Jewel's first album, "Pieces of You," when it was released in February 1995. I have no qualms about singer-songwriters -- plop me down with anything by Paul Simon, Suzanne Vega, Sandy Denny, or the sadly missed Jeff Buckley, and I'm happy as a clam (albeit a depressed clam). But from its whiff of self-righteousness to its coffeehouse-waif ambiance, "Pieces of You" felt as precious as Jewel Kilcher's own abbreviated stage name. After playing it twice, I dutifully filed it away. When a coworker attended a Jewel concert and reported that one highlight was her yodeling, I sensed I'd made the right decision. To be continued ... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Aug 1997 12:28:13 -0400 (EDT) From: Princess Subject: Tinley Park Lilith Fair Hello angels, this was my first Jewel concert and it was...indescribable. So, first I'm going to give the set list, and THEN I'm going to cast about for different ways to say "really, really good" ;). Summertime Near You Always (Never Trust Your Pink Fleshy Heart to a) Carnivore Morning Song Been Down So Long Love Me Just Leave Me Alone ? (I didn't know this one----does anybody? it was very up-tempo and rocked-out) WWSYS Don't YWMFM Foolish Games Angel Standing By Chime Bells (1st verse then yodel to the end) (I really wish she would've played Deep Water, SiBtW or Race Car Driver...but oh well, gues I'll just have to go see her again sometime, ;) ) She only told one story, but it was a good one. She said back when she was living in her van, and she first found out that a record label was going to hear her play at a coffehouse, she decided she wanted to have clean hair, so she went and washed it at Denny's. Just as she was finishing, and had started to dry it with a paper towel, she noticed two little blue-haired ladies, pressed against the wall. As she was leaving, embarassed, she heard one say "Well, she looked like a pretty enough girl; wonder how she ended up like that?" So...then Jewel looks mischievously at the audience, raises her middle finger and smiles sweetly as she says, "Well, this is for them." Yet, the funniest moment was when, during morning song, she said "I wanna give you some moooore"--she had the sexiest little come-hither look on her face, and she waggled her eyebrows...it was fantastic. But the best part was hearing her do "Angel Standing By." It was too beautiful for words; I cried, and through my tears, looked down on the Amphitheater (I was WAY in the back of the lawn) and saw a few dozen people holding lighters. Normally, that looks all cheesy, and the flames are swaying, but everything was perfectly still, and the flames came out one by one....it was like watching dusk fall and seeing the stars come out. It seemed the perfect tribute for Our Angel. Then, in the encore for the show, she joined Lisa Loeb and Sarah with Indigo girls (who SOOOOO rocked) in "Closer to Fine." Evidently, Jewel has been studying those lyrics, cause she was right on. In all, the show was wonderful. Wish I could've met up with some other EDAs but I didn't plan anything. I checked out an audio only page & Quiet Warrior was there, so I downloaded it. The comments said she played it at the MTV Motel CA, when was she there? Before Mr. BB left, he would tell us about Jewel's schedule. Shes got early Sept. off, right? Of course, it could be just rumor, but I hope it's true. >> Sounds viable to me... I have noticed that I've been seeing the video alot more the past few days... Example, this morning I saw it on VH-1 and about an hour later on MTV ... I personally think it's a big deal for Jewel to get respect from MTV, a station that seems to thrive on mostly HipHop, Rap & alternative music... - --Lisa-- **Warrior Princess Angel** P.S. On a similar note anyone notice how much they play Fiona Apple's Criminal on MTV, seems like a lot... Not the day I have longed for, rather the day I have waited for. I understand completely but I can not comprehend. How his poetry inspired me yet his actions made me weep. I am most likely better off, but I don't want to live this way. I sit waiting, perhaps his love will come another day. What's coming around the corner I cannot say for sure. Its what has past me up and left me that leaves me oh so pure. I musn't regret, for that will scar me ever more. All thats left to do is pick myself up off this dirty floor. I must live each day for a surprise, for "it is better to forget that to remember" him "and cry"! Check him out, check him out, check him out! =) Gregory can be described as James Taylor with a little bit of Hank Williams thrown in for added soul. His album "The Romantic Adventures Of Harry" is awesome and takes you through exactly what the title says, a snapshot of the life of protagonist Harry and his daily search for a love. Gregory is also the Rugburns ex-bassist and is on all three of their albums. He is featured on the 91X Saint Doug cd as well as several local San Diego soundtracks and compilations. Jewel is quoted as saying Gregory is "the sexiest man in San Diego" and he is. =) His personality is humble and genuine, he is absolutely a fun guy to see perform and also a great friend to hang out with. Gregory is up in LA right now recording his new album (John Doe is producing) which I know will land him some national attention. His work is brilliant and fun. He will be doing San Diego Street Scene this year too in September. =) If you would like more info. on Gregory or would like to buy his album, e-mail me at GregryPage@aol.com. I am his fan club president (I have his cds and signed glossy photos for you) and we will shortly be starting a mailing list for him, there is already a web site up (I forgot the address but it is listed under Yahoo!) and Gregory is helping me put out an e-mail and snail mail fanzine and a tape tree for some of his shows at Java Joe's. Please, do yourself a favor and check him out, he is truly a talent and very special. =) Have a great day! =) John-Eric ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #639 ***************************
