The morning after hosting my satisfying and oh-so-enjoyable LRT stop, I was called into my boss's office. Uh-oh; time to get my hair cut? Time to stop posting pictures of Toni all over my cubicle wall? Nope; none of those. Since the project I've been working on for the last 17 years (on and off) suddenly lost part of its funding (mismanagement of paperwork -- I'll not be naming names) I was put up for re-assignment. Within minutes, it seems, I was fingered for a high-profile task on a job that's suffering from lack of technical personnel. So, starting Monday, I'm off to sunny Beavis-and-Butthead land, that is Texas, specifically Austin! :-) You remember I said "lack of personnel"? They need people desperately (why else choose me?) and so I'll be spending a large part of the next 3 MONTHS at Fort Hood, playing with some Army tactical data computers, trying to keep them online and learning still more about UNIX in the process. Thanks to the last-minute acquisition of a portable computer (on loan from work) I think I'll be able to maintain net access and keep communicating with everyone. I haven't actually verified it yet, but I don't think it'll be a problem. I'm trying not to get depressed about this; I hate being away from home. I'm probably going to lean on my online friends to keep me company, so change your accounts now if you don't want a lot of sad depressing Email from Texas. :-) I'll have contact info shortly for anyone who wants to send snail mail or (heaven forbid) actually visit. I'll avoid posting NJC to the list about this, unless an EDA gathering sprouts for some reason. And I will be in San Antonio over Labor Day weekend for the World SF convention, if anyone wants to meet the whole family. :-) Till then, thanks for everything and I hope I don't have to go the entire 3 months without something to report on the list. To say that Jewel was the weakest performer at Lilith Fair, without even given her or her fans the dignity of seeing her perform before making such comments reveals an obvious negative bias. What ever happened to journalistic integrity? What gives this man the right to criticize something that he has not even experienced? We all know that the Jewel live completely transcends Jewel on record. Perhaps if this "journalist" would have given Jewel enough respect to see her perform before critiquing her, his "review" would have been more credible, and perhaps positive. The venue was sold out, which doesnt happen that often! Unfortunately, I was had a lawn seat, but a really nice girl in front of me let me borrow her binoculars during Near You Always, Foolish Games, and Don't. Lisa Loeb commnted that this was the largest crowd that they had so far (I'm sure that she says that to everyone) She did very well, but everyone was itching to hear Sarah, Jewel, and the Indigo Girls play. (p.s. by the way, the weather was drizzly, cool, and overcast, not a typical summer night) Jewel started singing from offstage as she did in Indy (I guess) and did a wonderful job. She alternated between singing without the band and jamming with them. I was very impressed by her jazzy approach to a few songs.... she started skatting and at the end of her set she yodeled for us! Her set included Down, Dont, Near You Always, WWSYS, Foolish Games, Chime Bells, and I cant remember the rest. I was so happy to see Jewel and Sarah in the same night that I cried. I started listening to Sarah about 5-6 years ago, and was turned on to Jewel because I heard someone make the comparison between the two. They both have ethereal angelic voices. Sarah's set was amazing as well. At the end of the Indigo Girls' set, Sarah came out to sing with them, then Jewel joined in, then Lisa Loeb, and Emmylou Harris, came out to join in on Closer I am to Flyin ( I think that is the name of the song.... I must confess, I am not that familiar with the Indigo Girls). It was a great ending to a great show! P.S. I did pick up a Jewel book for Greg, but as a warning to future Lilith Fair goers, the books were difficult to find because they werent displayed. I found them with the LF T-shirts. He didn't want his kids watching stuff like that. . .SO, Jewel wrote the song wondering what ever happened to that friend. . .did she turn out like her daddy wanted her to? well, the songs says the rest. p.s. I think I DID hear that story this March, at her show at the Beacon Theartre in NYC. Anybody else know?
