I therefore have 2 extra tickets for the friday 8/15 show, but need two tickets for the 8/16 show. They are lawn seats, and I am looking for lawn seats - just wanted to find out if there is anyone out there who would have tix to trade - I doubt anyone does. If there is anyone who needs lawn tickets for the friday show, e-mail me privately - I would be selling them for what we paid which I believe was $24 American. Hope to hear from you Tammy :-) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 08 Aug 97 14:02:13 GMT From: st_kuo@ix.netcom.com Subject: Re: jc: SPIN-some mentions I'm glad that I get to read what the editors of SPIN think about Jewel before I went out and brought a copy of SPIN just for the Jewel pics inside the mag. Now I won't. I think it's very true what Jewel said about cynicism, that cynicism is safer, not better (someone may correct me on this). Jewel herself knows that she's been taking a lot of craps from critics who dismissed her innocent appearance and (in the case of SPIN) her past in poverty as all just an act. The fact is, there are many people out there in the world don't believe that someone can come from such a humble beginning, someone who embodies both talent and beauty, and yet sings such honest and heartfelt songs can become so successful. There seems to be certain degrees of contradiction and therefore they tried to justify Jewel as nothing more than a young girl who knows how to market herself to win sympathy and admiration. This is my take of the story behind that SPIN article on Jewel and frankly I just want to say, "Oh F*ck them...what DO they know about Jewel, anyway?" I guess people just entitled to their own opinion and we all possess a cynical side of our personality. But it seems incredious to me that an unique individual such as Jewel can struggle for so long and finally achieve the top, only to be labeled as nothing more than a well-scripted Atlantic Record plot to market a girl from Alaska who plays in a category of music called "coffeehouse folk." The fact about Jewel living inside the van is that, yes, she did have a choice whether to rent an apartment or to travel around inside a minivan. But as she explained in an interview (I forgot the mag) that she only had so much money, and renting an apartment would have meant that she would have virtually no money left for food. Now what kind of choice is that? Jewel did not live the way she did just so she can come up with interesting stories to tell her audience between songs; she lived and slept inside the van because it's all about surviving on the street when you have very little money to get by, something I'm sure those editors from SPIN probably never experienced and most of us are unfamiliar with. Jewel survived it because of her positive outlook in life and unfeltered hope for the future. This is a cause for inspiration, not cynicism, and I am sorry if I talk for too long. I was sort of suprised by the way it sounded. It is very diferent than all of the songs on pieces of you. Also when I went ot the store to buy it I saw the pieces of you album and I wanted to buy it because of the extra songs but I couldn't because I don't have a record player. If anyone is looking for it, it is at Tower records and most likely is at all of the tower record locations. I must ssay i actually LIKE this idea.. and to furthen it - i have a lot of info for it... When I was about 12 years old, and my father worked at Alston School Photography, his boss gave me a box.. with tons of clip art in it and a yearbook kit. It's really difficult how to set it up - you have to cement glue the pictures and text into the form you want and it has to fit the set lines on the page. Each page goes on a separate piece of posterboard and you have to fill all the info out on what page it is.. lalala all that stuff.... but it's a grand idea! :) We can even arrange photos of people in like school order... we can have pages dedicated to the hard workers - show pictures of them with jewel... lala - definitely putting pictures of all the people that had fun lalalala i'm babbling now... but i'd have no problem finding a yearbook maker company for this if anyone wants to finance it... Money would have to be sent in first of courser to cover costs.... they would probably be expensive tho.. my yearbooks at school are pretty thick and cost 50 bucks.. but we could also save on them if we get soft covers rather than hardbacks... lemme know! i would be proud to run this if i can get enough pictures, etc.. ttyl - -linda the lovable, hard working angel :) On Thu, 7 Aug 1997, BrianBC wrote: > I read a message asking if there was an EDA yearbook to get a copy of. > Of course there wasn't, only the website, but I was just thinking... > wouldn't it be great to really have one? Does anyone know exactly when it comes out. Just two weeks ago I was told by Bibi (a gal who is Jewel's friend and works for her too) that the poetry book will not be out until at least late in the year or early 1998. When it was first announced, the poetry book's release was said to be to be timed with the release of Jewel's next CD. Since what Bibi said about when the poetry book would be out coincides with the latest we've heard about the CD being released, it seems that the two may still be released nearly at the same time. The critics, whoever they are, are right when they talk about marketing. The record companies, except in RARE occasions, sign an artist to a contract because they think the artist can reach a certain market. It's all about profit, and if the artist turns out to be a good person with genuinely good music, then to them, it's "so be it." It is really sad that it works that way, but it's true. It's all about the bottom line. But of course, that's nothing to criticize Jewel for; the artists themselves have genuinely good intentions with their music, and often do not "do it for the money." But the important thing to remember is that she is an ATLANTIC artist, so some of every album sold is lining their pockets... Prince, the artist, or whoever he is has tried to combat that idea with releasing his new 4-cd album without a label, but then again he is doing it for the money so it's just a question of the better of two evils. Anyway, don't read negativity into this post... I love Jewel, like all EDA's, and everything she does, knowing it's not for the money, but a genuine passion which she has. :) Brian -- the Angel that Thinks a Lot brianbc@geocities.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Aug 1997 22:22:58 -0400 From: "Doug Ashton" Subject: Jewel and Atz at Cincinnati LF Hello Everyone, I hope someone will give a complete rundown of the Cincinnati LF show, my memory is terrible.
