I mean something like selfishness, lying because it was easier than the truth, meanness out of frustration, making excuses to avoid dealing with a problem, or a whole bunch of other possibilities. I have. And chances are you have too. It almost seems inevitable. In fact, sometimes people say about our actions, "Oh, that's just human nature." But is it? When we say this we're, kind of, saying more that just what is. We're saying it's part of who we intrinsically are: selfish, liars, or mean to one another. And when we say it's so fundamental to our nature we're tacitly excusing it as unalterable. So to expect ourselves to be more, is like expecting a flower to grow without water. It can't; that's just the way it is. Is it "just the way it is" with us? I don't think so. We can try to be better people and, though it can be really tough, grow into something more. Maybe it's just at first it's so much easier to be less than our potential. Afterall; if you don't lie, make excuses, be selfish or mean; life can become pretty unbearable on the playground. And so it becomes a habit. These things we do to deal with the world become so natural to us because we do them so often. But just because it comes naturally doesn't make it human nature. We can be different. We can break bad habits. And when someone makes an excuse like "Oh, that's just human nature." they're really just continuing the habit of finding the easier way not to be our greatest potential. The next time someone perpetuates this habit maybe we should remind ourselves: What we call human nature in actuality is human habit. Kevin Grobman >> I write this: Somethings are programmed into each person, it's called heredity, and as of now it's uncontrollable. People often do things or think a certain way because of that's how they are wired when they were born. Human nature exists. There are many things that are changeable but there are just as many things, if not more that are unchangeable. A person is a product of their heredity and their environment, that's all. If human beings could change everything about them, then someone could conceivably make themselves perfect, which a human being cannot be. "What we call human nature, in actuality is human habit" is a partially true statement. Some of what people call human nature might just be habit, but also some is also just inborn and cannot be helped. JM ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 03 Aug 1997 22:09:46 PDT From: "R.J. The Only One For those of you who don't know us, i'll back up a step. Summerset is two-year old modern rock original band based in Waterford, CT. We've been playing around the Southeastern CT area for awhile, and recently recorded at Room 29 Recording Studios in Westerly, RI so that we would have a demo tape for clubs. The response from friends was so overwhelming that we decided to record professionally, and pull out all the stops... The rest is history, and that's why you've recieved this mail. Summerset features the following musicians: Ben Kane: Guitar and Vocals Chris Derosier: Vocals Dan Radin: Drums and Percussion Jeff Urban: Bass Matt Zahler: Guitar We're really proud of this work, and we want to expose it to the largest scope of people possible. The tape may soon be available at Strawberries stores, and we're going to do some in-store acoustic sets. I was watching MTV for the first time in a very long time this morning, and finally caught the Foolish Games video. I didn't like it very much. There just wasn't very much of that presence that Jewel usually puts out in her videos and stage appearances. There was too much surrealistic artistry put into the video, when the true beauty of Jewel comes out when she is there by herself without the gossamer wings and stuff floating around her. Something else I noticed, and it is always something that has struck me as slightly odd...very often she uses a half peace sign (from sign language) to point at the crowd/camera/whatever. I see her using it all the time when she is singing, and it always gets to me that she is using it. Just something that I noticed is all... I had a fun night at Rob and Tammy's!! Kim Zercher and I got there around 1:00 p.m., and we were the first to arrive that day, other than the baa baa bastard and Chris! We helped prepare the food--Chicken Caeser Salad (yummy)--actually, all we really did was clean lettuce and tear it up! More and more people started to arrive as the afternoon went on. We all just hung out till it was time to eat. Finally Jared showed up with Elizabeth Hummel and Cindy Lee Berryhill--these 2 women are so nice and down to earth--it's nice to see that! So they ate and got ready to do their show, and everyone gathered in the living room. I must say that the Campbell arts and crafts were nicely done! Yes, Eric, I liked your comet! Rob set the lighting, and it was time to hear their beautiful voices! They put on a great show! I loved it when Cindy used her "ghetto blaster" for the skip song--"she won't even try, she won't even try, she won't even try, she won't even try..."--and she hid behind the curtains and popped out when it was time to sing! Later she gave a few of the people in the front row some instruments to play for a song! They ended up doing "Daydream Believer" by the Monkees at the end--it was so much fun! I definitely recommend all of you to see them sing if you ever get a chance! Afterwards, they hung out and talked to everyone, and signed their autographs in the process. They are both really sweet, and extremely nice! After that night, I couldn't wait for the next day to see them perform at Selena's, and then the following weekend up in Massachusetts! So basically, we had a lot of fun, and it was great to see the EDA's again, as well as meet a few more! Overall, things have been quite fine since then. However, this "hands" thread goes directly against that goal. It's really nice (this "hands"/"friendship ring" thing), promoting list togetherness and all, but we all already know and realize that we have a nice close-knit community here and we have been emphasizing that fact for well over a year now. Therefore, I am asking all to please discontinue posting Emails to the list *SOLEY* for the purpose of continuing this hands thread/chain. It's not helping our need to bring down list quantity one bit. (And it HAS to come as it may contribute to the problems that may bring this list crashing to an end) **** Added note **** Some of you may think this has *not* been a problem, as maybe 10 "hands" posts have gotten through to the list. Well, over 40 others have *not* gotten through. That's over 50 "hands" posts that were sent to Jewel@smoe. With 452 subscriber to the regular version of this list, that's a potential 22,600 emails going OUT through smoe.org, just for this "hands" thread alone (452 x 50). I guess I'm stuck here now ;) Love You All STILL Till I Split Open and Melt, Lora _______________________________________________________ =AB=A4=BB=A5=AB=A4=BB=A7=AB=A4=BB=A5=AB=A4=BB=A7=AB=A4=BB=A5=AB=A4=BB=A7=AB= =A4=BB=A5=AB=A4=BB=A7=AB=A4=BB=A5=AB=A4=BB=A7=AB=A4=BB=A5=AB=A4=BB=A7=AB=A4= =BB=A5=AB=A4=BB =AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF= =AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF= =AF=AF=AF=AF=AF Be Here Now _______________________________________________________ =AB=A4=BB=A5=AB=A4=BB=A7=AB=A4=BB=A5=AB=A4=BB=A7=AB=A4=BB=A5=AB=A4=BB=A7=AB= =A4=BB=A5=AB=A4=BB=A7=AB=A4=BB=A5=AB=A4=BB=A7=AB=A4=BB=A5=AB=A4=BB=A7=AB=A4= =BB=A5=AB=A4=BB =AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF= =AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=AF= =AF=AF=AF=AF=AF=20 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 04 Aug 1997 12:36:25 PDT From: "Rachel Kotow" Subject: jewel pic HI! It's in the "FacesPlaces" section. There are pictures of some of the artists at Lilith Fair. (Sarah McLachlan w/ Tracy Chapman, and then there's Cassandra Wilson, not to mention Paula Cole, and of course Miss Jewel Kilcher.) The picture's only from waist up and she's holding her guitar, so it's hard to tell what she's wearing, but it looks like it's a red spaghetti strap dress. The pictures not that big, but still...It is Jewel. They posted on this list a while ago saying that the 2LP set would be available through them with an address and an email address. I am a newbie and have been on this list for a little over a week. Everytime I read a post about the memories of an EDA gathering or how much Mr. BB meant to everybody I get a strong sense of great friendship. I hope that someday I will be able to meet all of you and become good friends. I think it's great that there is so much love amongst all of you and it's all because of our favorite artist: Jewel. Obviously we should feel comfortable expressing feelings and opinions here, but arguing and name calling seem quite counterproductive, especially for a group of people who call themselves "Everyday Angels", don't ya think? More to the point, like one EDA said, "What would Jewel think?". Along with her talented song-writing and incredible vocal ability are we not equally inspired by the strength of her soul and her tendency to see the good in all people? From the many posts I've read I think it's fair to say that we EDA's think of Jewel Kilcher as far more than a performer or artist. We (I am assuming, although I honestly only speak for myself) respect her for what she has done with her life, the intimate way she shares her experiences with us through music, and most of all, for the person she has shown herself to be. If this is true, I think as Jewel's EDA's we should at least try to give each other that simple gift of respect she has inspired in us. Lately I've seen a couple posts that say the authors are newbies and not to give up now and the problems can't be that bad. This isn't meant to be rude, but if you've only been subscribed for a couple of days I don't think that you should tell EDAs that the problems aren't that bad and to stop unsubscribing because A.) You've only been subscribed for a couple of days and don't know what problems the list WAS having. and B.) If someone wants to give up, that's their choice. Next subject...Also there have been some posts that ask where poeple can find Save the Linoleum and Phyllis Baranby Finally Gets a Bra and Jewelstock and stuff. I think I remember that when I first subscribed I got a Welcome download. The information on STL and almost every other CD was in there. Did you guys read that? If the number of posts needs to be cut down these posts, I think, aren't needed. (I know that this post was un-neccessary too, but it was bugging me.) I just want everyone to know that I'm no longer a complete noviece at this. Many of you repsonded to my question, and I greatly appriciate that!!! Thanx again!!! Well, I have been in love with her song "Foolish Games" since I first heard it. I think that it has so much emotion and truthfulness. I love it!!! And, to top it all off, they released it as a single. But wait--there's more--it's a video too!!! I saw the video on VH-1, which I watch religiously, and I loved it. I saw someone on the list who was disappointed with the video. So, I was inspired to do a review of the video. So, bear with me...here goes nothing. I thought that the video was very true to the song. It was very moving and inspiring. I do question the use of blue, to tell you the truth. The second video for YWMFM had a lot of blue. This was kinda disappointing in FG because, well, we need variety!! But, that's ok, I still love Jewel. I do have a coupla questions about it. If anyone knows, feel free to mail me personally at grjsiv@hotmail.com. She mentions in the song that "you loved Mozart." Does Jewel like classical music? She also rides a black horse...does she enjoy horseriding? One last question...who does she dance with throughout the course of the video??? If anyone has answers, e-mail me!!! NJC, per se: If you are on AOL, my nick is "grjsiv" so feel free to Instant Message me, I'll put you in my buddy list!! Well, EDA's, have a nice day!! The weather is beautiful here in Cincinnati!!!
