Well, she's done that for me. Seventeen years ago I began to incorporate a non-profit society called TSUNAMI -- The Society for Unsung New Art and Music Innovators. The purpose of the society was going to be to foster and promote the development and appreciation of new and unsung musicians and artists of all types (photographers, painters, sculptors, etc.). I put that dream aside until very recently. I'm happy to report that, today, the TSUNAMI society is becoming reality. The legal paperwork has been completed, the government has approved our filings to date, and we're just waiting for the registration as a tax-exempt charity etc. in Canada. TSUNAMI will be operating within the next few weeks. In a big part with thanks to Jewel and the inspiration of EDAs I'll be living a dream of mine and the society will helping others to live their dreams as well. And when the EDA Foundation is up and running and performing its acts of kindness, TSUNAMI will be ready to offer a helping hand on this side of the border any time it's needed. Kindness and charity has many manifestations. In our individual lives. In our group activities. Who knows, one day there may be dozens of societies and clubs or organizations that will have grown out of the soil of goodwill and idealism. In our own ways, big and small we all contribute. That's my story, thanks EDAs Adrian ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Aug 1997 01:02:38 -0700 From: red_ranger@juno.com (Nick the blurred Angel) Subject: Time, and demos Could a Canadian (I hope I spelt that right...) It's also not a complaint, flame, or any other negative-type post. In fact, it's just the opposite. * It will, however, most likely be long, so I will warn(or apologize??) about it now.* As many of you know by now, I am going through a very tough time in my life right now. Two weeks ago, i wrote a post to the EDA's asking for them to keep me in their thoughts and prayers as I was about to undertake 2 days of difficult physical testing. The response that I got touched me more than I could even express in words. The number of people that wrote me offering the precious gifts of friendship, love and support, was incredible. I have never been to an EDA gathering, or have ever met any of you in person, but the words that filled my mailbox and my heart were those of true friends. I joined this list about 4 months ago, and in the process, have met some great people from all over the place. At first, I had my doubts about whether I wanted to stay on the list, but after a couple of weeks, I knew that it was for me. I began to check my computer several times a day to read all of the mail that was coming in, and became really excited about all of those that I had met and would meet in the future. For once in several months, I felt excited about something, and positive that this was somewhere i belonged. Amongst all of the other things that were going on, and going wrong, I knew that at the end of the day, i could sit down, log on, and just read. I just wanted to say thank you publicly to everyone that wrote me a message of love and support, and to all of those that said a prayer or kept me in their thoughts or hearts, and tell you all that knowing that I had the support and confidance of my friends with me played a big part in helping me get through the tests. Both days, when I got home, I logged on and re-read those letters. I will talk to you each privatly, but first, wanted to do this. Here's my hand to join with the others in a gesture of love, friendship, and hope for the future. ****************Hand************** I just hope, and I try now, to be there to offer out the helping hand to anyone that may be in need, and will gladly offer my shoulder to cry, listen, or lean on, or will be there if anyone just needs to talk. Please, if you would, keep me in your thoughts, prayers, and hearts, and I will do the same with all of you. I will update you all on how I am doing, again, especially if it's good news, but if anyone is curious, or just wants to know, feel free to just ask. Thank you all with my whole heart, for listening, for being there, and most of all, for just being you. I love you all. Hey Everyone!!! Here are the directions for Selena's wonderful living room tour!!! If ya wanna show up, and haven;t RSVP'd feel free!! We should have plenty of room. *snicker* The address is 203 Koser Road, Lititz, PA It is right near Lancaster airport, so if ya hear planes overhead, you are PROBABLY REALLY close. :-) Of course this all depends on where you're coming from. So I am gonna give directions coming from the PA Turnpike. (Each Way) Coming from 76E (PA Turnpike)(towards the Atlantic Ocean): Off 76, Exit 19. Take 283S (toward Lancaster). Follow 283S until it merges in with 30E (quite a long drive, but trust me, it does happen, and it is the fastest way :-). One exit after this happens, the exit will be Fruitville Pike. Make a right at the light as you come off the freeway. (This will be Fruitville Pike). Follow Fruitville Pike North. At a little less than 3 miles you will pass Petersburg Rd (Rte 722). The next road will be Koser Rd (about 1/4 miles). There is a stoplight there. And on the corner on the right, in front of you will be Faith Methodist Church. Follow Koser Rd. At about 1/2 mile, the road will Y. Continue to follow Koser road to the left. The hosue is about 7/8 of a mile from there on Koser Rd. When you pass Airport Rd, the house will be coming right up on your right. After Airport Rd, there will be one house, then a field, then a House that is shrouded by lots of trees. THIS IS IT!!! STOP and PARK!!! YIPPEE!! Welcome!! Coming from 76W (from Rob and Tammy's in NJ): Exit 21 (Route 222/Reading-Lancaster). Head South on 222 (it might say West also, but you'll be going South :-). Take Route 30W. Exit Fruitville Pike (just before 30 splits into 283 and 30). Turn right when you reach a T-intersection (Fruitville Pike). After Airport Rd, there will be one house, then a field, then a House that is shrouded by lots of trees. YAHOOEY!! YA MADE IT!!! STOP!!! (Park and c'mon in!!) Cindy asked for a start time of about 6 or 7. So, that'll be it. If you'd like to get there a bit earlier (say 4 or 5), you'd be welcome. Course we might not be ready yet, but you're welcome to help finalize preparations!! :-) If you have any questions, email me Tom Oh yeah, bring lawn chairs or a blanket or something to sit on if you're coming, ok? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Aug 1997 11:50:49 -0400 (EDT) From: Paul2k@aol.com Subject: Mr. Paul's Wild Ride across america (help) Paul is taking a solo trek across america very soon. like in a week and a half. Hi everyone, The Atlanta Lilith Fair was great!!! God am I tired though... Anyways, on the main stage, Fiona Apple started at 5:50, Emmylou Harris went on around (I don't remember the exact time) but it was a little after Fiona. Then Joan Osborne went on at 8:05. She was really good. Then JEWEL went on--yeah!! She did a great job. Except some a**hole, (probably trying to be nice) threw a rose on stage while Jewel was singing and hit her on the head!! She seemed really pissed off at that, but then again, I would be too. Then some obnoxious people in the very back kept on telling her to yodel, so she told them laughingly to shut up, and they didn't shut up through the whole song, Amen, even though she told everyone to be quiet during that song. I get a message from Eric (Crashboy) that Cindy Lee Berryhill was playing in New York. But we can't find any info on it anywhere - just a post from two weeks ago that Eric saw. The restaraunt mentioned has no phone listing with information. Eric says "let's go anyway - I'm sure she'll be there". I say, "I don't know. I doubt she's playing". But he talks me into it and I'm glad he did! We got to the Sidewalk Restaraunt at about 10:30 when Cindy was due onstage. Things were, naturally, running late so we got to talk to her for a while. She said she was really excited to start the LR tour. She also told us of a couple surprises - - one especially that may not pan out, but if it does, Alan's will definitely be the LRT to be at! Jared showed up with a friend. I was glad to find that Cindy's friend Rick who sang with her at the Knitting Factory was, coincidentally, in town and showed up to sing with her. She told us she stopped by the Bottom Line first and sang a song or two with Freedy Johnston. She got onstage to the sound of an indoor BUG ZAPPER. Has anyone ever seen an indoor bug zapper? Me neither. The snap-crackle-pop added a certain electricity to the room (haha, her joke, not mine!) Most interesting during her set was the fact that she did not have her toy piano. Instead, she played the club's grand piano! Quite a difference for her but she pulled it off quite well, though Aquamarine was played in a much lower key than I've ever heard. Her friend Rick, who I mentioned earlier, is a really nice guy. He told us what he thought of the LRT idea - raving for about 10 minutes that it was a huge huge idea which will certainly mushroom into something really great, allowing artists to circumvent the big labels and go directly to the people. Sound familiar? Unfortunately, he had to fly back to San Francisco today so he couldn't join CLB & EH for any of the stops. After the show, a guy came over to us because he noticed Eric's EDA shirt. It turned out to be EDA David Green. Very nice guy. He said he may be at Tammy & Rob's but sounded kind of doubtful. Eric and I wrapped up the evening (by the way, Jared, GOODNIGHT! You sorta slipped out of there) by having a late dinner at Stingy LuLu's where we were served by a staff of drag queens. :-) So, that's about it - the LRT should be off and running in East Hampton by now! Sorry if this seems unfair right now, but the end result (more people to make tapes) will help everyone. This offer expires tomorrow at 6PM (to save my mailbox :-) I'll let the 5 "winners" know, and provid ethem my list. I thought many of you would like to read this is this njc okay in small amounts??? - -------------------------FWD message----------------------- Around the corner I have a friend, In this great city that has no end, Yet the days go by and weeks rush on, And before I know it, a year is gone. And I never see my old friends face, For life is a swift and terrible race, He knows I like him just as well, As in the days when I rang his bell. And he rang mine if, we were younger then, And now we are busy, tired men. Tired of playing a foolish game, Tired of trying to make a name. "Tomorrow" I say "I will call on Jim" "Just to show that I'm thinking of him." But tommorow comes and tommorow goes, And distance between us grows and grows. Around the corner! - yet miles away, "Here's a telegram, Sir" "Jim died today." And that's what we get and deserve in the end. Around the corner, a vanished friend. Remember to always say what you mean. If you love someone, tell them. Don't be afraid to express yourself. Reach out and tell someone what they mean to you. Because when you decide that it is the right time, it might be too late. Seize the day. Never have regrets. And most importantly, stay close to your friends and family, for they have helped make you the person that you are today. Pass this along to your friends. It could make a difference. The difference between doing all that you can or having regrets which may stay with you forever. pass it on if you would like i think its great....i'm about to call my friend...bye :) Scott ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Aug 1997 18:36:28, -0500 From: AMXD99A@prodigy.com (MISS ANAIS NIN) Subject: JC: Just Wondering For no particualr reason, I was just wondering-how tall is Jewel? But right before I was about to give up hope, the summer program actually offered people to go. I was so happy and enjoyed it alot. After I heard Sarah Mclachlan, I bought two of her CD's the next day. hehehe :) Unfortunatley, Jewel didn't perform :( Well, I just wanted to tell everyone my experience to my second concert. But thinking of that video, I remembered that I got some promo video a long time ago with a contest that had Jewel driving around San Diego and you had to write in about what club she played at and something else. Does anyone know what I'm talking about or do I have to do a massive clean up to find the tape? Judd" Subject: JC: Frisbee Flashback for Jewel Here is my take on everything- I look forward to seeing yours too! EDA gathering: My sister and I were the first on the scene with her driving prowess, and Chris and Jenn showed up soon afterwards. We met at a nice pizza place after following the good directions. Jenn worked hard bringing a Jewel centerpiece cut out that watched us eat among other things. It seemed to be staring at us saying "clean your plates- remember when I was in my van?" Maybe it was just me. They brought posters and goodies to give away and everyone ended up with something. They were excellent hosts. The "we've got a hunger in our bellies" quote on the sign still cracks me up :D Things were kinda segmented conversation-wise til Mykle Mariette came in. He entertained us all and brightened things up for us. He brought us photos of the Hale-Bopp to symbolize the EDA spirit. That was nice. I would encourage everyone to make an EDA gathering if possible- it's so much easier than it is online to get to know people. Mykle was fun to get to get to know and full of energy. He also had the foresight to get all of the atendees' emails and names- something that would make this email alot easier :) Andrew Vernon brought some guests but temporarily abandoned them to come over and visit with us. I've always enjoyed his posts and admired his technical knowledge. I learned he's a good guy to get along with in person as well, something techies sometimes aren't :) Well he *is* big on Macs, so I don't know if you can really call him a techie ;) (just kidding, really!) It was also nice to finally meet Rusty (agentorange). He's been big into in the Tori and Jewel scenes for as long as I can remember and is as nice a guy to deal with in person as in email. Matt came up from UF and was fun to talk to. Seems we've both taken a few more years than expected in school :) Good job keeping up with us on the way to the concert! Upoh... there were two ladies from Florida there... what were your names... anyway I think it's great that you work where you can fly in for events such as this. I agree- it seems that the only intimate concerts for Jewel (for now) will be in Europe. That's really neat that you have been to some of the small clubs she's performed at! Hope to see you two again so we can have the chance to talk more. I enjoyed meeting all of you who were there- I hope you can make the gathering Labor Day weekend (I have no idea when that is- I'll look silly if it's this weekend, but that's okay.) Email me! And sorry if I've left anyone out- it's not intentional. I noticed in getting all the addys for this mail there was one from auburn I didn't see before. We would have offered you a ride Anil if you needed one- sorry you couldn't make the EDA gathering, and I hope to meet you one day. I've got some Jewel goodies at home you'd like to see I'm sure. Lillith Fair August 1/Atlanta Concert Review: Setlist: Near You Always Deep Water I'm Sensitive Morning Song Been Down So Long Love Me Just Leave Me Alone ? (I will take you down... down - what is this one?) Dancing Barefoot (Patti Smith cover) Don't Foolish Games You Were Meant For Me Angel Standing By Encore: Amen Details: Fiona Apple gyrates so much that I felt guilty for not having any dollars handy but I enjoyed her performance. Very engergetic. It was her last date of the tour, and she interacted with the audience well taping us saying "You look f*cking good Fiona" when she put her sunglasses on so she could get an ego boost whenever she was feeling down. Also she recorded us thanking Sarah for LF. Nice little waves to the sections of the crowd at the end - a nice touch. Suzanna Hoffs - all I have to say is "What were those guys dancing in front of the second stage on and can I have some?" Emmylou Harris - dinner break for me since it's not my kind of music, but she and her band are very talented. Strong voice and good show and the notes were well executed - just not put together how I like ;) I think the only thing that would scare me away from Jewel's music is if she started using a twangy steel guitar. Ugh. I mean please- use a dulcimer or fiddle if you want to sound country (I like those BTW). Joan Osborne - nice version of God at the end, her new stuff she tried out on us didn't do it for me though. Cute outfit with a scarf on her head holding her hair back looking mom-ish (in a good way). Jewel: After Near You Always she told her Denny's (though she didn't mention the restaurant name that I remember) washing hair in the sink story with the blue-hairs saying "She seems like a pretty enough girl- I wonder how she ended up like that?" But instead of the "F*ck you" at the end to them she said "I just hope one day that they Seee Meee!" It lost alot if you ask me... but there were kiddies around so it was nice in that way. She has developed this weird emphasis on the last sylable of words it seems. In Deep Water I especially noticed her putting a load of emphasis on the last words of phrases- more than the usual enunciation- I don't like it myself. Told her little story about how she doesn't like photos while she sings since it always gets her like (she poses in funny poses here). She also added that it looked like she was peeing when she was singing. Timing on I'm Sensitive was a little off at first, but she recovered nicely. She did the Tom Petty "Good" and "Food" thing- nice to hear it again. I hadn't heard of that in a while and really like it. The band came out for Morning song, which she used the lyrics from the album for with Miller and Nin. That's right kids- Glenn Miller and nine inch nails made a surprise appearance! You missed it. Even though they both wore dresses it didn't fool me. Heh, just seeing if you're reading. Back to being serious. Fiona's band really did wear dresses and were introduced as the "Spice Boys" The electric guitar came out after Love Me Just Leave Me Alone, and she used it for that song I'm not sure of and Dancing Barefoot. I don't prefer that stuff, but it was a nice change. She put her guitar down and moved around more. Her hips got into it for a little while there- I was like get down with your bad self Jewel. During You Were Meant For Me someone up front threw a rose and smacked her right in the face. From now on I think we need to reserve the front row for EDA security. We could have spiffy green shirts made up just like the "Safety Team" there. They should all be fired if you ask me for allowing Jewel to be impailed with thorns. But anyway, she paused for a second but kept going. At the end the person apoligized and she said "It's okay, I'm glad I'm not a girlfriend." She redirected her frustration at talkers (which quieted down fairly well) saying "If the person next to you is talking kick them in the teeth." Then she called down a Yodel-requester in the rear. Angel Standing by was lovely, and Amen was the strongest in memory. One good thing about this tour is due to her limited set her voice is the strongest I've heard. Amen was the closest to the album version (which I used to sit in my car and listen to for the tingles on my neck it gave me) I remember hitting the highs very nicely, with only a short inhale at the end on the long note. Her encore was planned since she finished right on time and the lights didn't come on beforehand. I liked that. Even if she didn't play Jessica, I still enjoyed the show. I printed off the lyrics for her and gave them to a member of the "Safety Team" stagefront to try and get them to her with my request. That woulda been neat to hear- even if the venue would most likely only support the fast version. Jewel was wearing strapped high heels with the thick heel, blue skirt to her knees, tight black top with black sweater over it. Her hair is light blond(as usual in the summer). Sarah McLachlan's set was very good, just enough to draw me in after a long night before and draining (but fun!) day. Maybe I'm getting old, but these festivals seem longer than they used to be :) It was weird to see her in concert since her music has always been something to relax by and sink into not really cheer for. Kinda weird for me. Whew, James, who learned that he still doesn't like public display of affection in the seat in front of him even if it is two women :) ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #621 ***************************
