Take I-75 to exit 104 - If you're coming by I-75 from the north (Tenn), take the Howell Mill/Northside Dr. exit (Exit 104), veer to the right (to Howell Mill Rd.) and then turn left at the top of the ramp. - If you're coming by I-85 from the north (Carolinas), head into the city and take the I-75 North exit, exit 104 (Howell Mill) will be the second exit. Turn right at the top of the ramp. - If you're coming by I-85 (Alabama) or I-75 (Florida) from the south, I-85 will merge with I-75 just before downtown, watch for where they split again right north of downtown. Stay on I-75 and exit 104 (Howell Mill) will be the second exit. Turn right at the top of the ramp. - If you are coming by I-20 from the east or west (Alabama), head into dowtown and then head north on I-75/85, take I-75 when they split and exit 104 (Howell Mill) will be the second exit. Turn right at the top of the ramp. Once you are on Howell Mill, you will travel about 1/2 a mile and Fellini's will be on the corner of Howell Mill and Collier Road. There is a small McDonalds across teh street and a Blockbuster Video diagonally across the intersection. There is parking on the side and behind Fellini's. If we leave by 3:00pm from Fellini's, traffic shouldn't be too bad yet, but for those who want to leave early, here's how to get to Lakewood: Take I-75 south through downtown (it will merge with I-85). Before they split again, you will see exit signs for Hwy 166 - Lakewood Freeway. If you see signs that say 166 - Langford Parkway or something similiar, don't worry, you'll see the Lakewood signs soon. Get on Lakewood Freeway and then either follow the signs or you can follow me from Fellini's (I don't know any street names, I always just follow the signs myself.) Well, not only was the show stellar ,but I got to meet up with a few EDA's and a little girl named , um...Jewel. Ironically enough, the EDA's were supposed to meet at a place called Clyde's for lunch and I only managed to find one at that point , Chuck. He said that Jewel was up by the hotel and we went up there. I needed to check in anyway so it was convenient. There we ran into Jane and Paul , other EDA's, and some evil mean autograph dealers who like to stalk any celebrity that walks through the door. Long story short-Jewel walks out of the door head down sunglasses on , we all stand there mouth agape as she walks past us, finally two other people said , "Jewel." They got this awesome picture w/ her and I managed to get my EDA shirt signed (I don't think she recognized it though) and give her a Pablo Neruda illustrated book that was in my backpack. She said , "Oh cool, I've seen this one before but I don't have it." Right in my moment of glory, those dang dealers shoved a TIME cover in her face and swiped her away. They added that to the plethora of other signed stuff they had . :( Jewel looked mildly irritated by their "attack." She was very obliging to everyone nevertheless. I know all of the EDA's and myself were just thrilled to have been within a few feet of her! After that ordeal , we ate at Bennigans and headed to the show. I met a few other EDA's at the show (Paul and Jules) who were very cool as well. Oh, Jules says to tell all of you hi and that she won't have access to her e-mail for a while:) Here's the set list to the best of my recollection: Near You Always/Little Sister/Deep Water (preceded by story about the old ladies in the bathroom of Denny's watching her wash her hair.)/Don't /*Morning Song/*YWMFM/*Been Down So Long/*Love Me Just Leave Me Alone/*Dancing Barefoot/*Passing Time/Angel Standing By/*Foolish Games/*WWSYS/---encore Amen:) There was very little dialogue between songs probably due to the tight schedule. Great show though! To all the EDA's , Chuck, Jane, Paul and our new additions who had the guts to speak to Jewel first--we gotta do it again sometime soon! By the way , we never found Jewel in the lobby last night either. C'est La Vie. Still in shock and Headached from a helium induced "POY." Ouch. They reviewed another Lilith Fair, and this is the very favourable review that they gave Jewel: It was Jewel, however, who stole Tuesday's show. After more than a year of extensive touring, the Alaskan singer has matured significantly as a performer on big stages. Whereas 14 months ago she joked nervously during an opening slot in a summer shed, Jewel now rules that space confidently, even (especially?) in front of a sold out crowd of 15,000. Moreover, she's strengthened her arrangements. On "You Were Meant For Me," for example, an organ and cello added warmth amid the song's melancholy, but in doing so also accented the hurt inherent in the melody. Also, I'm very saddened to learn of Mr.BB leaving the list. I always looked forward to reading his inside scoops and news updates. His prescence certainly added a lot to this list and I am sure that his abscence will be greatly felt. Hopefully, he can be persauded to rejoin at a later date. Take care all and keep smiling. There were discussions, but hardly any real arguments. Now Mr. BB, whose posts I have always read eagerly, since he has actual information and gives it to us in a really friendly manner, is leaving? I truly am appalled. I've been on vacation recently, and I must have missed something. I just wondered if anyone else noticed that the list was falling apart. What''s going on EDA's? Jeff Walisko, the one who I think started this list isn't even on it anymore and wants to get rid of it. We need to do something and cut back on No Jewel Content Mail--MAKE ANOTHER LIST FOR THAT. Hey, that's a good idea. Alexis ------------------------------ Date: 30 Jul 97 21:30:14 +0100 From: "Chris Groves" Subject: Jewel Interview in NME There is a two page interview with Jewel in this weeks New Musical Express, 2nd August 1997. The interview appears to have taken place the day before Jewel received the keys to the city of Anchorage. There are also two photos, one 3/4 page colour and the other a small black and white. The following are a few brief extracts that I found amusing... Tomorrow she is due at the Mayor's office to be presented the keys to the city, an award slightly less prestigious than being granted a year's free parking tokens. But from the no-bullshit glint in her eyes she may well be planning to piss on this particular parade. "I don't really like very much about Anchorage to be honest with you." she grins through the crooked lower teeth that have graced every magazine cover from Rolling Stone to Which Crooked Lower Teeth?. A girl who now lives in relative luxury in San Diego and finds walking down the street more of a chore than slaving over a hot udder for hours on end. [...] and has become the biggest Stateside phenomenom since crap beer. All without you ever having heard of her. Jewel grimaces at your correspondent as if he'd just served up her pet terrapin in a quiche. Alanis may have the warble, Liz Phair may have the balls (Errr... - Biology Ed), Tori Amos may have the nutter factor and Joan Osborne may have the um, interesting hair, but Jewel has the vulnerabilty, backed with a melodic clout that could stop an encroaching Chinese Army in its tracks. Haven't you even got any stories about vomiting on Bob Dylan, or something? "Y'know, I cannot vomit," Jewel laughs. "It's very hard for me to vomit even when I'm really sick. I've never had a talent for it."
