He and She represent the "dark" aspects of these forces, and They are also complimented by "Light" polarities in the form of Lucifer (male) and Gaia (female). It is through the interaction (but *not* conflict) of these polarities - masculine and feminine, light and dark - that balance is maintained both in the world and in the Self." - -#wicca member Sadogoat Since the reformation, The Devil has been a symbol of resistance against the hegemonic forces which seek to subordinate and exploit the Wyrd of Western civilisation; and as the thorn in the side of orthodoxy,The Devil is a fitting standard to be borne with nobility by those who are defiant and proud. The word Devil is derived from the Greek, 'diabolus', for 'the accuser'. Thus, the gifts of Satan can be understood tangibly as liberation from hegemonic tyranny and the celebration of life and all that strengthens and enriches. -The Order of The Deorc Fyre http://members.tripod.com/~osv/index.html Note the last sentence that it notes that it is a "liberation of the hegemonic(Hegemony -leadership exercised by one state, esp. on in a federation of states, New Websters Dictionary and Thesaurus) tyranny" This can be interpreted as liberating ones self from the tyranny of living under rule of the US Govt. and by the look of things he is doing a good job of riviling what the U.S. believes is morally correct. But this has also been done by Elvis Pressley, by Shaking his hips on stage which in resoponse to they never would show his picture below the waist. Not to mention that other rock stars have done this like Ozzy, and Alice Cooper, so M.M. and his Satanic Practices are just a passing phase that will dissappear if people would not make such a big deal about "Satanic" side and all of the things he "supposedly" does on stage. These are all just gimmics that he is using to rival the community. Take it from someone that has been a fan since the 1994 when M.M. was touring with NIN, and has seen him in concert 3 times. Please feel free to send your questions comments and critisims to me. And for the record I am not a follower of any Satanic Religion, but I refuse to have people go off and bash religions that they have not read about from the people who belong to that religion. Don't any of you ever get sick of > > arguing back and forth about how Jewel is doing one stupid thing or another > > when we should all be appreciating the good things that she does do? I personally disagree markedly with this post, and I'll tell you why. Those of us that don't blindly accept everything Jewel does as the bible to are better fans than those who don't. Someone who thinks that one should like Jewel's video just because she's in it isn't a true fan. A true fan is able to view things with an unprejudiced eye. I, for one, haven't seen the video yet, so I can't comment on that. I love Jewel. I consider myself a huge fan. But that doesn't mean I can't criticize some things she does or things she lets happen. The biggest example of this is the delay of her second album. At the expense of true artistry and for no other reason than to sell more copies, the album's release was delayed for a whole year. Am I just supposed to be happy about this? How much of the delay is Jewel's fault? We'll never know, probably. But regardless of this, she did let it happen. Jewel now has the clout to say, "Hey! My fans that have been with me since the first time they saw me on Conan O'Brien have been waiting for over two years for a new album. I want to release new music NOW!". Hootie and the Blowfish did. I'm not a fan of theirs, but against the urging of their record company they released their second album even while their first one was still in the top 20. Did their new albums' sales suffer? This is hard to tell, because the releases off of it were nowhere near as catchy as from their first album. Perhaps a break would have helped sales. But were they in it for the sales? No. They cared about their early fans enough to release a second album when their first was popular. What really ticks me off is that "Foolish Games" isn't helping sales of Jewel's album. It's helping sell copies of a soundtrack to an absolutely terrible movie. I don't even understand why the single wasn't just released under Jewel's name. Maybe the reason why the album delay hurts me is that while I think parts of PoY are great, I don't think it holds up well as a full album. I think it shows great potential, and this was confirmed by such EDA releases as (unfortunately tape-only) Jewel Rocks the Paradise, which showed tons more talent and poise than PoY ever did. It got me itching to hear a new release from Jewel. Unfortunately, the album was delayed and it just made me mad. Part of me enjoys the publicity that Jewel has. I heard of her very early in her career, and it always makes me happy in some way to be able to say that I knew so-and-so when... But the more sensible part of me does not. Jewel's cover of Time is nice and all, but she shouldn't have been on the cover alone. Period. Not with such other great artists appearing on Lilith Fair. Does anyone really think someone is going to rush out and buy Jewel's cd because she was on the cover of Time? There comes a point where super-saturation in the media occurs, and this always incurs a downfall. Jewel has said things to the point before about wanting a strong foundation to build on, something very organic. I think the slow build of the album achieved this, but now we are beyond it. The cover of Time is too much. Now I am dreading when this quick ascent will result in a quick fall. Actually, I'm not really dreading it. If her next album doesn't go gold, then maybe once again we'll be able to see her in a small venue again. Maybe she won't feel the need to use her sexuality to sell herself (YWMFM video). Maybe she'll start releasing albums when they're done and when her fans want them, not when she/her record company thinks they'll get the most sales. - -- Mark the EDA who wishes Jewel the best of luck but wishes she'd release some more music. - -- Mark A. Sorry it took so long for me to get this baby pumped out but I didn't get home till midnight Tuesday and I spent all day Wed recouping and looking for work, whick I did find by the way =) WOO HOO. So I arrived about 3:30 on Tuesday the 8th. The landing at San Diego airport was breathtaking. It had been probly 6 years since I had seen the ocean and the landing was right along the water....WOW. I had a great greeting from Mandy and the person who made it all possible for me, John-Eric. We got so caught up in talking that we almost left the airport without my luggage. After we drove along the coast a little while the 3 of us went skating for about and hour and watched the sunset on some cliffs. Tuesday night was Loam night at Java Joes. I must say that it was very nostalgic for me to walk into Java Joes for the first time after hearing so many shows from there and knowing all that has takin place there. Loam turned out to be AWESOME. After the show was over Mandy and I took a walk along the beach to discuss the wedding plans ;) I almost shed a tear after being on the coast again, it brought back some great memories. Wednesday began with some Mexican breakfast and feeding the birds. Soon JE and I were off to Irvine to see Lillith Fair and our beloved Jewel =) When we got there we had to wait a little while for Larry to arrive so we could pick up our tickets. I had to walk back to the car and the next thing I know Sinjin walks up and introduces himself, I guess the EDA shirt gave me away ;) We hung around till we finally saw Larry. After a great big Hug we all proceeded in the venue. We began meeting up with various EDA's off and on throughout the day. Alex, Mark, Mary, Stanley, and Matt. I finally got to meet Chelsey and Nancy. Nancy and I were glued together for about an hour from the hello hug and hug from Mia =) JE and I had some great seats in the Terrace thanks to Larry and had a great time wathcing the Ballon man blow up 500 ballons during Suzanne Vega and most of Paula Cole. They both Rocked by the way. After JE and I found out that Nettwerk had a booth (thanks to Stanly), we got about 20 of Tara's postcards and bought some posters for her to sign. Off to our seats for the long waited performance. Jewel had the special angelic backdrop raised for her performance and then she was finally on. JE and I both agree that that night she did the best "Angel Standing By" that either of us had heard. Her set was cool, different from what I expected. But it was nice to hear some familiar favorites such as "Deep Water," and "SIBTW." Next was an incredible set by Tracy Chapman. She definitly stole the show. Sarah had an incredible performance as well. Definitly a beautiful way to wrap up an incredible evening. After the show Larry, Kris, JE, and I had a great scavenger hunt game going on...and wouldn't you know it, we found a $3000 video camera in the bushes. But wait, it says property of Kris Kane on it, DAM ;) The 4 of us were off to Larry's after the show and even though we got directions from Larry of how to get there from Land Sea or Air, John-Eric really wanted to take me on a Grand tour of Compton at 1 in the morning :| Finally we made it and it was off to bed before too long............. Seems like 50 EDAs or so will be descending on Steve's Campground... Well, here's a suggestion (or two) for the weekend... Since 95% of the EDAs are at the campground, we should MEET there around noon and establish a couple of "set times" where we know we can regroup. That way we spend less time trying to find each other and more time WITH each other. I have a couple of ideas for "small" activities, and I'll offer them at noon Saturday. However, how's about we try to do these things: 1) The first annual "Angels in the Outfield All-Star Game". Oh yeah, what summer day is complete without (some variation of) America's favorite pasttime? Only thing is, don't take it as seriously as bringing a glove or anything. A stick. A (tennis) ball. That should do it. Seems like we could find room for a field around camp (or a local parking lot). If the dysfunctional Harris clan can find the field and stay vertical long enough, we'll take on all comers! One definite rule -- NO PAINTBALLS. ;-) 2) A "Try to See the World from a Different Angle" fieldtrip -- the word's largest kaleadioscope. Alan came up with this one on Sunday down at Cape Cod (site of the upcoming Living Room Tour on August 9th!). Apparently it is a barn converted into a colorful kaleadioscope. (Talk about looking at the world through rose colored glasses!) Hopefully, it will be open on Saturday. It sure sounds like something this bunch should share together... 3) The Tape Grag Bag (with a twist)...if enough folks participate, we might want to do this in the evening when everyone is a little less distracted (and stuck around a blazing inferno of a campfire... yes, I am a confirmed pyromaniac... * ahem * ) Let's do this as a "Yankee Swap"... ;-) 4) The Jewel "C'mon I'm Gonna Give Ya S'Mores" toast-a-thon. A heavenly concoction of graham crackers, marshmallows and Hershey chocolate bars created over an open fire! (Bring some of each with you) 5) Star watching. We'll be on the lookout for late arrivals all weekend. Break down and BE ONE! (Please bring photo ID this weekend as K and I will be patrolling the event grounds... just in case) Well, CrazyCleoChris and I are pulling in late Friday evening and setting up a homestead. Make sure ya'll drop by the HARRIS HOSPITALITY HUT if you find yourself in the Bearsville/Woodstock area anytime this weekend. BTW, four out of five bears sh*t in the woods and party at the HUT! (God I hope they don't get confused and party in the woods instead..) Everyone going please drive careful... the rest of ya'll, pray fer us... Before you know it we had his living room looking and sounding great, you would be proud Crunch :) As the day grew later I got more excited because I had been waiting for so long to see Tara. Larry got home and we were off to the Trubadore. As we walked in I almost Doo Doo'd in my pants when I heard Tara playing but then I found out it was just the sound check.....WHEW. Kris and I managed to get some Media passes and started to set up for the photo shoot. After scopeing out the place I saw Tara upstairs in a hallway and was getting excited. I asked a guy to get Bill for me and he came out and talked for a few minutes...he is really great. Next thing I knew Tara walked out and I was all happy. I tried to regain my composure and I proceeded to introduce myself and tell her that a number of EDA's had traveled here to see her. She was very happy that we came. I also told her that Gian, Dan, Mia, Liz, Tim, Steve, and Chris said hi, she said that you guys are all great =) About that time everyone noticed that I was talking to her so they all came up and I introduced everyone. We talked for a little while and then it was time for her to get ready so we let her go. I must say that Tara had an incredible stage presence. She was very good at maintaining a beautiful smile throughout the show and sang incredibly. Kris and I spent a few songs snapping pictures and then I stopped to enjoy the show, and what a show it was. After she sang "Silence" the crowd was cheering for days for her to do an encore but since she was the first of 3 that night there just wasn't enough time. Later I hauled a$$ down to the local grocery store to get some film. When I got back Tara was in the lounge talking and signing autographs. JE and I got our posters that we got at Lillith signed and various other pictures. Later we got to interview Tara on video and talk to her about her Jewel experiences and how much the EDA's love her. You are all sure to see it on Kris' video project that should be done in a month or so. Finally we had to go. After Tara left to go talk to Bonny Rait Larry and I did the happy hug-and-jump dance. The evening was simply incredible. After we got back to Larry's we had an unexpected visit by Cindy Lee and Paul. That was great. More video entailed and some great stories and laughs. Cindy Lee is really excited about the LRT's and JE and I showed her some of the living rooms that she would be playing in, ones we had pictures of that is. They left and we all were just in awe of what a great day we had just had....WOW. Friday came and it was time for more dubbing and house work. JE and I spent most of the day looking for STL and PBarnaby. We only found 3 copies of each so it wasn't that good of a day :\ WHATEVER.....we found a big fat ZERO. Oh well. It was now time to head back to Larry's and to get ready for the birthday dinner. 7 O'Clock had come and we were off to the rainbow. We had a hot waitress and it just gets better. Larry's associate who must have been a Pimp Defense Attourney showed up with 5 or 6 HOT babes. That was the last we saw of Larry for the night :) The EDA table was hot with conversation but Sinjin and I had a close eye on Larry just in case he needed some help with the women ;) After an Axel Rose spotting and a Heineken taste test it was time for the party to disperse. JE and I stayed up as long as we could that night trying to dub tapes but finally we all feel asleep. After a few sing alongs and scaring some people off the road we all finally made it to OB and met up with the rest of the EDA's, thanks to Gerrit's hat we were able to find em. It was great to finally meet Jimmy and Leif and Gerrit and Lora. JE and Gerrit and I went out to the water for a little while and then came back to relax and get burned. The time at the beach was much to short. We all ended up migrating up to Joes so we could sit in on the interview with the guy from SPEW..or whatever mag he was from. Chelsea and I spent a little quality time skating and we all enjoyed some time visiting in Joe's. Gerrit and I treked up for some pizza and it was finally time for Randi to start her set so we all took our places. I happened to spot Stinky zooming in and out of Joe's and was able to get him to sign my Burns CD and EDA posters. Randi performed a smashing show and spent some time visiting and taking pictures after the show. I only got to talk to Igor for about 5 minutes (and from what I hear is amazing), but didn't get to spend much time with him though I would have liked too. A few of us went back over to the Mansion and Gerard and I got to talk a little about some early Jewel at the Innerchange and stuff. All of us fell asleep eventually after Gerard left and the next thing I knew I woke up and everyone was leaving...ACK!! No good bye hugs for Mary :\ I ended up leaving later on that day and spending some time with my bestest friend since he was in town. I didn't get back till later that day and then I was off yet again to LA to go to Larry's. Gerrit and I had a great trip up and got to know each other a little better. I basically crashed early that night and was up Monday organizing the Larry tape archives. Monday was full of treats. I got to meet a great friend of Larry's from out of town and got to eat some of the best Asian Seafood in the SoCal area...Thanks Larry :D The fun seemed to fly right by at the restaurant, but you know what....I think Elizabeth will agree with me that the best thing at that rest. was the oranges. I don't think I have ever had a better orange in my life. Anyway, I was really sad to have to say goodbye to Karen. I truely enjoyed my time spent with her and hope to see her more in the future. Elizabeth and Karen were off and we were all headed back to Kooky HQ for more of what we do best...talk and then sleep. Tuesday was certainly a treat for Kris and I when we saw the Foolish Games video. We both jumped out of our boots when it came on. Later Kris and I had a power lunch at Juniors and got some of my pictures developed for Larry. Next thing I knew I was off to the airport for a long journey back to the Farm. I have to say that trips like this one help me to never forget what a great thing this list is. I can't thank John-Eric enough for his generosity...because if it weren't for him I wouldn't have met my Bretheren Rotha :) For those of you who havn't met Larry I will tell you to be carfull of you might catch that disease he is spreading. So the people I was referring to was not necessarily you, but the ones who keep whining and complaining about every little thing she does, as if she actually cares what you think. It is her own life and she can do with it whatever she wants, because this "mailing list" :) does not own her, as much as some of you would like to think that. OK, that's fair. Opinions respected, etc. etc., though it's kinda rude to say "suck" :-) But I hate to see misconceptions stated as facts: >.and I have to say he IS Satinist because he >sings about that and i have a friend, who shall remain nameless, who >LOVES m.m. he pracrices the religion of Satinism because he says that >finally there is a Satinist grup out there First of all, it's "Satanist" as in... um.... you know... maybe... SATAN? :-) Second, I wouldn't take this friend too seriously; it sure looks like he has projected his own beliefs onto Mr. Manson's persona. My daughter and I have all his albums, have read and watched a few interviews, and seen him live. It's pretty obvious after sampling his off-stage persona, that the whole Satanist thing is hype, marketing, and good ol' showmanship. Is he really a member of the Order, or is that just another little tidbit from his publicity sheet? Because I haven't seen anything that makes me think he's really serious about it. When Kennedy interviewed him on MTV, they were all smirking while delivering their "shocking" revelations, and breaking up the moment the mics went off... >.....OH and one more thing, why >do you think he throws around the Bible at his concerts and then kills >innocent animals ?? I've seen numerous posts suggesting that he does these things... and you know what? I've never read a news article or heard a first-person sighting of these alleged acts. I'm sure he loves the people who write about them, though, because they're giving him free publicity and many people will probably go to see him -- and buy his albums -- who wouldn't have before. I'm tempted to say that if a 44-year-old man and his 17-year-old daughter can enjoy Jewel _and_ Marilyn Manson, maybe there's a common factor -- music -- involved. But... that's just my opinion. :-) Enough of this! There's room for MM, Jewel, and even *gasp* Lynyrd Skynyrd in this world -- but this is the Jewel list, and I've said my piece. :-) - -- | Greg Dunn | | | gregdunn@indy.net | "Who is Number One?" | | GregDunn@aol.com | | | http://members.aol.com/gregdunn | Patrick McGoohan | ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Jul 1997 03:20:43 -0400 (EDT) From: Piper1013@aol.com Subject: NJC: Ani DiFranco Hey ya'll, I know that tons of you are Ani fans and thought I'd pass this on to you. :) You can find more about the Spin magazine cover at AOL Keyword: Spin If you don't have AOL, well then i'd *guess* that spin has a web site as well. << Five Foot Two, Hair Of Blue.... Kimonos are an Eastern garb, where they don't have many satanists >(by that name, at least) I tried to shut up, but I have to comment on that. Kimonos are the traditional costume for Japanese women, and calling it satanic is just very, very rude, not to mention ignorant. Maybe you've never seen a person wear a kimono before, but just because it's different, it's not satanic. I'm not Japanese, and I found your comment very offensive. Anyway, about Manson, someone mentioned that his satanic "image" or whatever you call it is just an act. Well then, I really pity all those teenagers who can relate to his music, because they're basically relating to nothing! That's just another reason for me to dislike him-how can someone respect an artist (satanic or otherwise) who's not even sincere about his music? And yes, I have heard his songs and seen his videos, so I guess it gives me the right to slay him too. :) Subash ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #577 ***************************
