Lilith has a bad rap... ...in the Jewish Lilith story, Lilith questions Adam, "Why must I lie beneath you? I also was made from dust, and am therefore your equal." Many people feel that strong women are bitches, because they want to be the equal of males; do jobs traditionally male in nature or have personality traits that in a man, we would sum up as leadership. In a sense, Lilith Fair is about reclaiming, reclaiming those parts of women that some might feel are more male: strength, power, command. And to take the name of Lilith, is the begining of that. In the process of making the changes, Murphy's Law decided to have some fun with Jeff and us and really caused things to "come majorly unglued" as Jeff wrote me. List mail was delayed and backlogged, and many posts were sent out up to 4 times....YIKES!! I do know he worked feverishly into the night trying to fix the problem, I have no idea as to his progress. All I can say is wish him well, and send good vibes his way and this all may clear up soon. By the way, one unfortunate, possibly permanent side-effect of the changes being made *may* be a delay in list mail being delivered. I have no idea what kind of a delay we are talking about as compared to what was the normal delay a short while ago, and there is no way to predict the amount of delay. I do know that when the whole WWW was seemingly working fine, email I sent to the list usually made it back to my box within ten minutes or so, and I do know that the poor AOL subscribers (I really do cry for them) have been faced with delays from a few hours up to THREE days(!!) for the last six weeks, but that has largely been an AOL problem, they've actually been hanging onto the 'external' mailing-list-type email and making late deliveries on purpose due to difficulties *they've* been having with their email system. (They gotta do what they gotta do) All I can say is hang on, things will get better (as usual) and likely within a few days we will soon know what kind delay may be the norm. I'm a bit confused. The best way to play the above is probably: 3 1) While holding the 2nd fret with your index finger, and the 3rd fret with your middle finger, pick the string. p2 2) Release only your middle finger from the 3rd fret, and let the ringing note descend to the 2nd fret, but do NOT pick again. h3 3) "Hammer on" to the 3rd fret by tapping your middle finger onto the string at the 3rd fret, allowing the note to step up. Again, do NOT pick this note, as the 'hammer on' adds to the vibration of the string. You should probably release your index finger from the 2nd fret now. p0 4) Release your middle finger from the 3rd fret, allow the note to ring on the open string. Let me know if I'm not making any sense. It's much easier to show this 'live' than to describe it.. :) Next week's guitar lesson will be Eddie Van Halen style tapping... ;-) The 'networking' angel.. :D /mel P.S. This is my first post. This morning the House Judiciary committee, subcommittee on intellectual property held hearings to discuss a piece of legislation that, if passed, will forever take away the majority of income for those who write songs. The bill, with the misnomer, the Fairness in Musical Licensing act, if passed, will exempt almost 70% of the restaurants in the US from having to pay royalties to the 3 performance rights societies in this country. Those who would have you believe that the bill is a good idea have painted a picture of the small business owner faced with a looming monopolizing giant in the form of ASCAP, BMI and SESAC. As was pointed out by several in attendance, this is not a case of giant against the small business owner but small business owners against small business owners, each owners of private property. Songwriters own intangible intellectual property that is used to enhance the business of a bar or restaurant. Songwriter Mac Davis delivered a speech that made me want to cry wherein he stated that while he is an anomaly among songwriters and got lucky with hits sung by Elvis, most who are writing songs as a sole source of income are faceless names, don't receive the fame of the artists who sing their songs and are barely getting by on their current royalties. Mock him if you will but there was a brilliant display of camaraderie between committee member and songwriter Sonny Bono and Davis. In the end Bono asked with a smile on his face, fully knowing the answer, "are all songwriters rich?" Davis smiled back and said "of course not, its a minuscule amount of folks who make any money at all from their songs, that's why its so important that you not pass this bill." All 3 performance rights societies have homepages that discuss the legislation and give examples of letters that you can write to your representatives in congress. This bill died in the last congress but this time around it is receiving strong support and could very well pass the House. If anyone cares, please call and write. They are listening and several members are on teetering on the line between support and saying no. Thanks for listening, Erica - --------- End forwarded message ---------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jul 1997 13:25:40 -0500 From: gosiam@juno.com (Margaret E Milsztajn) Subject: Re: Sick of It All What do you mean by this? A nice, helpful > one, but still a fan club. > Josh, thank you for the wake up call. Your message helped me to say the following: From now on I do not want to be connected to the Church of the EDA and do not want to be referred to as an Angel or EveryDay Angel. Even though there is no mention of such a church in the FAQs, that is how it feels to me. Call it a big family or a community or any other form of club or organization, it all comes down to being a part of more than just a group of fans. I have been one of the people that helped feed and create this climate that the Jewel mailing list has evolved to. I even said on TV during an interview that we were all angels. Do as you will, but I no longer will blindly be a follower of this philosophy. For over 15 months I have been reading over 100 messages a day. Little by little I have been fed this nonsense and really started believing it. I can already see the mail I'm going to get. Many so called angels will show how tolerant they can be of free speech and free thinking. Toast me for giving my opinion so others can really see what your made of. One list member even suggested that I might have something wrong with me by saying, "I hope you can begin healing". The healing can begin now that I can think for myself rather than think as an "EDA". I still can enjoy talking about Jewel and NJC without being an angel. I also have to agree about most of the Marilyn manson part... While I do not like his appearance or Music, he is not a Satanist, or the Antichrist. I know he says he is, but it is all an act... and Act he has admitted to. It is all one big huge gimmick to make money. You know how Ru Paul is just a big gimmick? He's a guy, who dresses up to put on a big performance for others... and he makes a shit load of money doing it. Now I don't agree witht he message Mar MAnson sends out, so I don't listen to him... if his videos come on, I turn them off... etc... On a different note... does anybody else agree with me that M2 should be the station that they move all the gameshows to, anf the beach mtv, and the dance shows, and the real world shows... and bring MTV back to it's original All Music All the Time days? All MTV has to do is say it's on the "Batman and Robbin" Soundtrack. Why did they have to use the words "inspired by" How could anyone be inspired by a grown man running around in a rubber muscle suite with pointed ears and killing a criminal with a gun that shoots ice. A 2 year old boy maybe. Not a 23-year-old award-winning singer/songwriter! But what can you expect from a station that repetedly plays videos of the antiChrist transvestite Marilyn Manson (which makes me glad I have VH1!) By the way, what's the E-mail address for MTV. I want to give them a piece of my mind. I hope all you other EDAs do. >> ARGH! Once again do I have to remind people that MTV has NO CHOICE of what to put for the name of the album it's on... why?, you may ask... it's because the NAME OF THE ALBUM is "Music from and inspired by Batman & Robin"... go ahead, go to the record store and look for yourself everyone... it's right there on the package... that IS the full name of the CD. And Vh-1 has the same credits for Foolish Games that MTV does... please do NOT write MTV, you will only look silly if you do.... oh sigh.... This isn't a flame or anything, I"m just starting to get frustrated .... hehehehe... :) I promise. - --Lisa ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jul 1997 12:52:16 -0700 From: smithr@agcs.com (Roger Smith) Subject: Final JEWEL Fake Update: Here's a copy of the email that I got regarding the fake Jewel... I wanted to reply to Bob's message on the list - it's not a flame - but it's going to set some people straight on a few things.. Well I think you kind of missed my point on how he reached people... It's mostly the scarred teenagers.. ones who have experimented with drugs and are recuperating as I've said... it's mostly the ones who have been in mental homes, tried to kill themselves - the SERIOUS problems... with substance abuse and child abuse and such... Marilyn Manson sings about things like that - and that's where kids can connect. He doesn't sing about heartbreak, which you may have misunderstood... ttyl - -linda the lovable EDA :) p.s. and in response to never thinking you'll find a manson fan on a jewel list - that's kind of labeling... I enjoy lots of different music styles depending on my mood. Do I have to hate Marilyn Manson now that I like Jewel? No.. I don't think music tastes should be that way. I have no faith myself by I came to that decision on my own terms as people should. Anyway Manson's music is just noise in my ears.
