I think the kimono's added to the video. They were kind of eerie, and that only added to the darkness of the song itself. They really didn't look like satanists, because satanists can be ordinary people like you and me. The video was wonderful I thought, althought this was only the third music video I've ever seen. The song to me seems like a dark song, and the coloring, lighting, kimono girls, and dead tree's all added to that. They really enhanced the video. I loved it, but I also realize that everyone's entitled to their own opinions, so I respect yours and everyone else who has thought the video was not so great. I can only agree with you. She doesn't sing with as much emotion as she did on the original. Also, the piano and the cello don't stand out as much. It's probably a simple case of a new record company (Warner Bros.) telling her what to do. They probably wanted it to "fit the movie". WHAT REALLY TICTS ME OFF is that I have never heard the POY version on the radio. It's the new version that is becoming popular. The people through which this version is becoming popular have probably never heard the POY version. As for the new video, who put the makeup on her? whoever did, extremey overdid it. She is extremely prety when she doesn't put that much on, expecially that blue, metalic, looking stuff. She looked just perfect in Hard Rock Live. Personaly, I liked the old VH1 video of her just singing. All the griping and complaining I have done today is compaired to Jewel at her best. It's going to be held at the Woodlands Pavillion (just north of Houston on I-45). This takes place on Sunday, August 3. Gates open at 3:00pm, show starts at 4:30pm. An EDA gathering is being planned for this and there are already several who either have tickets or plan on getting them. This won't be a huge gathering like some in the past, but just something where a few of us can join one another and have a great time while enjoying the concert. There may be a dinner planned for after the show, but things are still in the very preliminary stages. For now, this is just a list of the EDA's so far that have expressed interest in being there (and most do already have tickets). There are 3 sections to choose from for seats. Reserved (covered), reserved (non-covered), and lawn seats. The reserved sections have actual seats with backs on them. Prices are $41 for the covered section, $31 for the non-covered, and $23 for lawn seats. All of the tickets also have a service charge...I believe it is about $4.25 It would be great if there were at least15 EDA's at this. There will be 3 stages. A main stage, second stage, and what they're calling an acoustic stage for up-and-coming artists. Also many booths will be set up as well and an on-site Border's music store. The schedule for the various stages are as follows: - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Artist Time Start Time Finish Stage - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Gates open 3:00pm Katell Keineg 4:30pm 4:50pm Second Kelly Willis 5:10pm 5:40pm Second Lisa Loeb 5:50pm 6:25pm Main Mary Black 6:35pm 7:05pm Second Emmylou Harris 7:15pm 7:50pm Main Joan Osborne 8:05pm 8:40pm Main Jewel 9:00pm 9:50pm Main Sarah McLachlan 10:10pm 11:00pm Main Acoustic stage: Alisha's Attic and one other band will be on this stage that will be located inside the on-site Border's music store. Each set will be 15 mintues. Also, a Lilith main stage or second stage artist may perform on this stage, if so, this will happen within the first hour after the gates open. Jewel maybe??? :-) Keeping my fingers crossed. I was very impressed with the artisticness of it all. The body double was used for a sort of "mirroring" scene, where you see the back of the body double, with Jewel facing the camera just beyond the body double, and they are doing mirror image movements. Does that make any sense?? It was just a beautiful job all around, and I think it did a really great job of portraying not only the feeling of the song itself, but it also embodied what Jewel is (at least to me) and sort of her own spirituality and uniqueness. Not to preach or anything, but sometimes some of the videos I see on stations like MTV and VH1 and Much Music are a little wacko, having little to do with song and too much to do with the use of big bright strobe lights and things like that. A good example of a video I liked (although I really dislike the singer, Marilyn Manson) was Manson's video for the "man you fear" or something like that. It was a recreation of Shirley Jackson's short story "The Lottery" which is basically how every year the entire town gathers and picks out the name of a town person who will subsequently be stoned to death. THis person is sort of the scapegoat for all hostility in the town. Sounds a bit sadistic, I know, but Marilyn Manson weaved it into the song in a really interesting way. Read the actual short story by Shirley Jackson. It's really good. Wow, I really babbled on, didn't I?? Sorry.... :) Alana. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jul 1997 18:44:03 -0400 (EDT) From: Chaplain Dan Subject: NJC: EDA Shirt Yahoo! Yipee! Huah! It`s like saying that you wanted her to live in her van all her life....geez,c`mon,what`s the problem here, cant we just be happy for her?We cant want her to stay little all her life.If she wants to do a movie, let her do movie! If she wants to do a world tour, let her do a world tour!If she wants to be the first human being to set foot on the planet mars, then let it be!Im really happy now that she`s able to do a living out of what she loves, and that should be what inspires us,her little angels. That`s what gives us wings. But not only Jewel, but the simple guy who makes 30000$ a year gardening, that guy is happy, that is what inspires people, naked honesty, pure happiness. This attitude is not worthy of the EDA,i cant change someone`s attitude by telling what to do,but maybe i can make them see what they are missing. And they are missing that Jewel is the personnality of the hour right now,and that she`s happy with it.She`s living her dream, she`s making her dream, how cant we be not happy??? lotsa love L.a.e.a. Why did they have to use the words "inspired by" How could anyone be inspired by a grown man running around in a rubber muscle suite with pointed ears and killing a criminal with a gun that shoots ice. A 2 year old boy maybe. Not a 23-year-old award-winning singer/songwriter! But what can you expect from a station that repetedly plays videos of the antiChrist transvestite Marilyn Manson (which makes me glad I have VH1!) By the way, what's the E-mail address for MTV. I want to give them a piece of my mind. I hope all you other EDAs do. Another possibility is that the mail was bounced because the addy it was sent to ( most likely not JewelJK@aol.com) didn't exist. Or there could have been a simple network error. (This is the best way I could put it, so what I have just said roughly translated means: the new version of FG and the new video are still great. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jul 1997 16:53:25 -0500 (CDT) From: dkaracos@marlin.utmb.edu (Derrick) Subject: ***Houston Lilith Fair EDA List Update*** To all EDA's: The Houston Lilith Fair is coming soon! Anyone who thinks they may be interested in attending this, please e-mail me and I can add you to the list. - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Houston Lilith Fair EDA List =======---------============ Will Cheng - Sugarland, TX - soul42@aol.com Bill and Carrie Dallner - Chicago, IL - dallfin@flash.net Tien Dang - Houston TX - tdang2@Bayou.UH.EDU Jason Daring - Houston, TX - tss@blkbox.COM Derrick Karacostas - Hitchcock, TX - dkaracos@marlin.utmb.edu Stacy Katz - Houston, TX - stacy@nol.net Mark Suva Madlangbayan - Pensacola, FL - amalia@pen.net Amber and Mindi Reed - Bridge City, TX - hyypergirl@geocities.com Farr Shepherd - Tecumseh, OK - obie1@ou.edu Fons Taddic - Houston, TX - ftzog@Bayou.UH.EDU Chris Wieland - Houston, TX - cwieland@mindspring.com - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'll be updating this list once a week.
