I am glad that you touched on this. I find it unsettling at times that many seem to think that Jewel's "innocence" means that she is not a strong businessminded, money-hungry human like the rest of us. This is not to say she is greedy, but come on guys, face it, we all want wealth...and anyone who doesn't think that Jewel promotes herself in every way, shape, and form, to get more, then you are mistaken. She certainly knows the business, and how to manipulate things to get where she wants to be. She has done this since her days at the Innerchange when she would sit on the beach and get surfdudes to be interested in her, so they would, in turn, go see her perform. Great work! Hell, it got me there: where there are hottie surf guys, I will be! And then, this continues today. So, I am glad that Josh mentioned this! And I wouldn't be on the list and wouldn't even know of Jewel and that's a scary thought for me. I hope that if you are being selfish you will stop and just support Jewel for whatever she does. Just my humble opinion. >Bob I think Derrick was trying to say that if she keeps this overwhelming media presence for much longer, she'll begin to lose popularity and therefore we don't want that to happen. What you want to do is to move to the UK, here you can be blissfully ignorant of Jewel; never see her; never read about her; never hear her. We had the July 21 issue of Time in the shops today, the cover was a picture of a pair of Chinese dragons, any resemblance to Jewel or Sarah MacLachan was purely coincidental. BTW for those countries where your copies of Time lack Jewel you can find both the cover and the full text at www.time.com. Well, next week we're due for the release of YWMFM, I believe it's being released on the same day as Meredith Brooks Bitch, that's the name of the single by the way, not my opinion of Ms Brooks. What's the betting that Meredith Brooks will get a far higher chart entry than Jewel. I reckon YWMFM might scrape into the top 40. I think the solution to all our problems is for Jewel to spend the next two years in the UK. She'll disappear from your TV's and radios and magically appear on ours. Actually I have a cunning plan, you send Jewel to us for 2 years and we'll send you the Spice Girls for 2 years. WOW! you get to keep Baby, Ginger, Posh, Sporty and Scary for two whole years! Hi everyone! Sunday night we finally launched the Future Folklore tape tree that Alan (MrBB) had been talking about. This email is the first of three that you will receive tonight regarding this tree. The others will have the subjects: 2) Future Folklore Tape Tree: Concept & set lists 3) Future Folklore Tape Tree: sign up now! :) Please do NOT email me now with questions or trying to sign up. Wait until you read all three emails, the instructions on what to do *for now* are in the *third* email. Jewel mailing list tape tree veterans: This tree will be very similar to previous trees I ran before, with one exception....that being a simultaneous 'leaf' & 'branch' call as Eric Montas did with the EDA Cover tape. It's up to you if you want to read the rest of THIS email. *All others*, new folk & the like, PLEASE read the rest of this email. ***************************** HOW THIS TAPE TREE WILL WORK: A tape tree on this list is an organized system used to distribute hard to get music of Jewel (or other artists, as in this Future Folklore series) be it live recordings, cuts from promotional releases, radio interviews and the like etc. The basic structure for this tape tree is that it will be a co-operative effort among many subscribers to the Jewel mailing list. It's goal is to spread the music of the artists on this tape series (or Jewel when doing Jewel trees), at no cost, other than to supply your own blank tapes, a return mailer and return postage. It is done in the EDA spirit that if you can, just maybe you can return the favor some day. If not, so be it. Nutshell version: "seed" makes copies for "branches" who make copies for "leafs" :) *This* tape "tree" will start with a "seed" who has a master copy of the tapes that will be treed. (a two tape set in this case, more on that in the next email: Future Folklore Tape Tree: Concept & set lists). The seed (me, in this case) will send an email to the list recruiting *everyone* who wants a copy of the tapes. The recruits are called "branches" and "leafs" (I use the word "leafs", not "leaves" :) Typically, this email to the list recruiting branches and leafs is called a "branch/leaf call". The branches will be the folks who are volunteering to make copies for others, the leafs. The branches will be making up to ten sets of tapes for leafs. PLEASE remember do NOT email me now! Instructions on what to do will be in the third Email entitled: Future Folklore Tape Tree: sign up now! :) All who want these tapes will reply to that third email according to the instructions in that email. I am expecting anywhere from 200 to 300 people to reply. Some will apply to be branches, many more will apply to be just leafs. (remember, branches will be volunteering to make copies for the leafs) I will choose the number of branches needed based on the overall number of replies. I plan on choosing one branch for every ten replies that want tapes, so the final number of branches will not be known until I get all the replies. Leafs (and branch applicants NOT chosen as branches) will then be assigned to the chosen branches who would make copies for their leaves. The branches will send blank tapes & return postage/mailer to the seed, who makes copies and sends them back. Like-wise, the leafs will send blank tapes & return postage/mailer to their assigned branches, who copies them and mails them back. If you are confused at this moment (I would perhaps be), don't worry, step-by-step instructions on what to do are included in future emails as the tree progesses :) There are about 2 days left to sign up for this (Thursday deadline) . After that, all EDAs who missed the 'call' will be able to get their tapes from leafs who got tapes. OK, on to the next Email: Future Folklore Tape Tree: Concept & set lists Mike :) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Jul 1997 18:17:13, -0500 From: AMXD99A@prodigy.com (MISS ANAIS NIN) Subject: SJC: Anais Nin/Jewel Pages/Lilith Fair I know the Anais Nin/Henry Miller thread is over and all that good stuff, but I just wanted to mention that if you're interested in learning more about her, you can check out my Anais Nin page at http://pages.prodigy.com/SymphonicRealm/anais.htm I also have a Jewel page (http://pages.prodigy. com/SymphonicRealm/jewelq.htm) and wanted to ask all of you on this list who have Jewel pages if I can link you (if I haven't already). Even if Jewel is sick of >seeing herself on the cover of mags do you think she should stop being >interviewed or photoed?? I don't think so. Actually, that's exactly what I think!! And I daresay that's part of the message in Jewel's music, that you have to be true to yourself, not to anyone else, no? So if, and I'm not saying that she is, but if Jewel is tired of seeing herself on magazine covers, and she thinks that's enough, then that should be enough reason for her to stop. After reading the posts and thinking about it a while, I believe: 1. I'm not unhappy about her popularity, and I'm glad she's achieved it. However, to me, it's to the point where I no longer care if she's on the latest cover of "insert magazine name here." 2. You cannot, absolutely cannot blame her record company for this. Yes, they can coerce her into doing this. Yes, they can cajole her into appearing in a dozen magazine articles at once. But, only she and she alone decides what she does, just like everyone else on this planet. The only thing a person HAS to do, is die. You don't have to eat, you don't have to sleep, you don't have to work, you don't have to breathe. Now, I'm not saying there aren't consequences of these actions, but you always have a choice. 3. Maybe it's not so much the fact that Jewel's on yet another cover, but that she's appeared on Time Magazine's cover. Doesn't it seem strange to you that this weekly news magazine finds nothing more important to place on its cover than Jewel? Possibly more of a commentary on society than about Jewel. >new album in a long time -- the video doesn't count! :)], Jewel has done >NUMEROUS side projects which keep her fresh. And besides that, she's going on >tour so much [Lilith Fair] that she can't go into the studio. Hi y'all, This email is the third of three that you will receive tonight regarding this tree. The others will have had the subjects: 1) Future Folklore Tape Tree: How this tape tree works 2) Future Folklore Tape Tree: Concept & set lists I recommend you have read the two emails listed above before proceeding with this email. This email is a call to for "branch" volunteers & "leaf" requests for the Future Folklore tape tree. :) Please read every word of this post. Many of you are experienced tape tree "branches" & "leafs". However, many are not and may be totally lost in this. This post is written for their benefit....the new folk. So veterans, please bear with me. This tree will consist of two 90 minute cassette tapes. There will NOT be any DATS, mini-discs or VHS Hi-Fi available of these tapes....standard audio cassettes only. Other than that above, this email will not discuss the tapes at all, or what you'll have to do later. The tapes were discussed in the previous email entitled "Future Folklore Tape Tree: Concept & set lists". This just discusses what you have to do now, if you want these tapes. Note - I will be accepting applications for branches and requests for leafs only up to 6pm EST Thursday night, July 17th. Any email received after that as a branch or leaf request will be denied. (Late emailers can always get copies in the future from EDAs who have the tapes) *************************************** READ THIS IF YOU WANT TO BE A BRANCH: *************************************** To be a branch for this tree you must agree to voluntarily and freely make copies of the two-tape Future Folklore set for up to ten "leafs". The leafs will be the folk who sign up for this tree and *only* want copies. For various reasons, only folks living in the continental United States or Canada will be considered as branches. Anyone living anywhere (even the space station Mir) can be a leaf. NOTE!! - If you know right now that you want to be a LEAF ONLY, then go on below to the section of this email for LEAFS. If you think you may want to apply to be a BRANCH, please read on. :) In addition to what was mentioned above, branches must agree to do and/or have the following: 1) Possess at least one decent quality dual recorder capable of *normal speed dubbing*, OR two decent quality single cassette decks. (We want our branches to have quality equipment, no boom boxes please) 2) Agree to make your master tapes at least a High Grade/High Bias chrome audio cassette. (Maxell XLIIS grade or equivalent as a minimum, NOT XLII) 3) Agree to dub in real time/normal speed. NO high speed dubs allowed. There are other basics for branches that are normal for these sort of things. I will Email them privately to accepted branches. So, if you have the desire to be a branch for these trees, email me. In the SUBJECT of the email, PLEASE put: branch, the state you live in (or Canada, if you live there) It is important that you get this right, it makes it much easier on my end if you do. example *subjects*: branch,New York branch,Washington DC branch,Canada branch,Washington branch,Arizona Please, do not put a 'space' after the comma. Please, NO abbreviations either, spell it all out. In the BODY of your email to me, I'll need your: 1) FULL name 2) Email address 3) Alternate Email address(es) if you have any 4) Postal mailing address 5) Brief description of your TAPING equipment you plan on dubbing with. Just your deck(s), I don't need to know about your receiver etc. *Please include brand, 2 single bay decks or dual deck, approximate cost new, age etc. 6) Any time you will be away in the next 6 weeks and likely unavailable for branch duty during that time. 7) phone number (IF you wish to volunteer that info, it WILL remain confidential. Of course feel free to *not* send it if you wish. Also include good and/or bad times to call) 8) if you intend to use metal tapes 9) anything else at all you want to say When done with your branch application send it to me here at: ducksoup@spectra.net REMEMBER....please put in the subject of your Email to me!: branch, state or country you live in (USA or Canada residents only can apply as a branch please) If you are selected as a branch, you will be notified by me. Please give me up to ten days to respond (it should take less, I just wanna give some "just in case" leeway). If you are NOT selected as a branch, you will be automatically made a leaf for the tree. FYI, please note that for the last tree I ran I had 25 branch openings and received about 72 applications. If you have ANY questions about any of this, feel free to Email me. :) Everyone involved in this project sincerely hopes you enjoy your tapes. ************************************* READ THIS IF YOU WANT TO BE A LEAF: ************************************* if you would just like copies of these tapes, you will have to email me with a leaf request. When I receive your request, I will immediately reply with an email telling you I got your request. Please read it, as it likely will have some more info for you. Again, I will be accepting applications for branches and requests for leafs only up to 6pm EST Thursday night, July 17th. Any email received after that as a branch or leaf request will be denied. (Late emailers can always get copies in the future from EDAs who have the tapes) All I need you to do is to Email me with the SUBJECT (NOT the body) of your email in the following format: leaf, state or country where you live examples: leaf,Alaska leaf,Washington DC leaf,New Zealand leaf,Israel leaf,Canada leaf,New Hampshire leaf,Washington leaf,Guam Please, do not put a 'space' after the comma Please, NO abbreviations either, spell it all out. In the BODY of the email AT LEAST tell me your FULL NAME and if you intend to send METAL tapes to your branch, tell me that too. I do not need to know your postal mailing address. Your branch will later, so you can email it then to him/her at that time. Remember, please get the SUBJECT of your Email to me right. :) It will help immensely. Also, it's a shame that they replaced the album version of YWMFM with the single version since the album version is far, FAR better, and in fact was the reason why I bought the album in the first place. While I am sick to death of the single version, the album version still and always will being a tear to my eye. Take care. Hi y'all: This email is the second of three that you will receive tonight regarding this tree. The others will have the subjects: 1) Future Folklore Tape Tree: How this tape tree works 3) Future Folklore Tape Tree: sign up now! :) Please do NOT email me now with questions or trying to sign up. Wait until you read all three emails, the instructions on what to do for now are in the *third* email. These two tapes are of events that happened at two amazing EDA (list member) gatherings this spring. They were recorded by EDAs on high quality equipment and then the idea to tree them out ballooned into reality :) Along with this tree is the concept of future tape trees of this series, due to the up coming Living Room Tour by Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel at EDA homes across the US of A. Who knows what this will develop into? After the listing of what is on the tapes will be excerpts of Alan's (MrBB) recent post on this tape tree, it best explains the future of this series. Then, on to the third Email in this series: Future Folklore Tape Tree: sign up now! :) ******************************************************** The tapes (both 90 minute cassette tapes): FUTURE FOLKLORE - Volumes 1 & 2 THE EDA CAFE & HOT DOG FEST Key to who is performing: CLB - Cindy Lee Berryhill - EDA Cafe, Boston MA 4-18-97 EH - Elizabeth Hummel - EDA Cafe, Boston MA 4-18-97 SP&S - Steve Poltz & Stinky - The Hot Dog Fest, Dana Point CA 4-9-97 (Steve Poltz & Stinky are from the group the Rugburns. Mike will be posting sign-up instructions this weekend & I hope all who do sign up enjoy the tapes. (Please do not reply to me & keep an eye out for Mike's free sign up instructions later this week end) What follows is a repost of the info explaining what the "Future Folklore" tapes are. Best wishes! Alan(MrBB) *Repost from June 1997*: I'd like to take this opportunity to explain my new project called "Future Folklore". There's been many great EDA parties around the country. Some of these had incredible entertainment provided by other San Diego area musicians such as The Rugburns, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Elizabeth Hummel & Gregory Page. (All friends of Jewel, by the way) In the case of the Hot Dog Festival (HDF), thrown by the Morales Family in Dana Point CA, Steve & Jeff (aka Stinky) from The Rugburns dropped by & played a short but wonderfully unique set. There's many brand new songs & those who were there can testify it was quite unlike any Rugburns show of late. Shortly after that, an impromptu EDA Cafe (EDAC) was thrown together at The Snyder family's home in Boston MA. Cindy Lee Berryhill & Elizabeth Hummel cancelled a gig in Albany & joined us for an incredible night of music & EDA hilarity. I'm sure Cindy Lee & Elizabeth will agree it was a highlight of their tour. It was certainly the longest gig of the tour! (I'd also like to say that any hard core "Pet Sounds/Smile era Brian Wilson" fans will be absolutely blown away by Cindy Lee's new "keyboard" material. I personally love "Antarctica", "Family Tree","Aquamarine" & "She Won't Even Try" more than any other songs I've heard by anyone this year. I mean it, too!) We plan on distributing (free of charge, of course) the 1st two volumes of a new ongoing tape tree series that will contain all the performances from both of these events. These particular EDA events are becoming legendary & thus the name "Future Folklore"..... These recordings will be different than the elaborate authorized Jewel recordings that we've treed in the past. Both of these events were recorded without the use of a mixing desk & are more reflective of the actual events. The music is still crystal clear but you also hear the EDA interaction (as well as the birds & ocean at HDF!). Tegan Godwin made the "ambiant" HDF recording & its really quite nice & captures some of the spirit of this historically significant EDA gathering. At EDAC Phil Kelnhofer & I collaborated on last minute equipment, but it worked out well. We ran a separate mic on vocals, one on instruments & one on the room so everything was captured clearly. (If any techies are curious about the recording techniques utilized, write to me privately.) It's also important to note that the musicians have all been incredibly generous enough to authorize the release of these recordings for this project. I have two goals for this project: I certainly hope to turn more EDAs on to these other San Diego artists. They can all benefit from our continued support. But more than that, I want to share a little of that "x factor" that happens when EDAs get together. There's something very special going on that I want to see continued. Lovable Lawyer Larry said it best: "We all began as fans of Jewel & then became fans of each other". {snip} These first two volumes of "Future Folklore" will consist of two 90 minute cassettes. This music is really something special. If this is successful, I'm willing to donate my resources to continue this series on an ongoing basis. I'm hoping "Future Folklore" Volumes 1 & 2 will be enthusiastically recieved. If nothing else, I sincerely hope this series will help encourage more events like this in the future. Best wishes, Alan(MrBB) ******************************************************** OK, on to the third email to "come & get it" entitiled: Future Folklore Tape Tree: sign up now! :) Mike :) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Jul 1997 19:37:13 -0400 (EDT) From: JENBUG57@aol.com Subject: NJC: Living Room Tour Has a web site been started for this?
