Butler while he was here, and now also uses the name Ma-Di (and maybe Russ Dove) in talking to EDAs and others on-line about a new religious cult he's trying to start up, which he calls "the way". He describes the "way'" as being a holy war and he's a stormbringer who's going to usher in the new age -- with Jewel's help. (He's already had one message hand-delivered to Jewel but it didn't mention his plans for her.) An e-mail address on the group's web-site is the same as that used by someone calling themself "Sovereign" and who ran a militia-related web-site that's been taken down. This could be funny or it could be dead serious (or neither) -- one thing that's certain is that for the women (Maras) of the DOMA (the order that Butler and some other male associates are trying to set up), this was no game for the people involved. What the EDAs I'm hearing from aren't sure about is -- what should we do? Do you all think this is something to be worried about? Due to my previously having posted some messages about watching out for scammers and manipulators in cyber-space, I've been receiving e-mails about a variety of things that are going on. Mostly, I'm very happy to report, there's very few people trying to take advantage of the trust and goodness of EDAs. But this is one situation that neither I, nor the EDAs I'm hearing from, expected. Should we tell Jewel? or Atlantic Records? At the very least, one need be careful of checking things out when encountering people in cyber-space. Any ideas on how to deal with such a situation? Right now being aware may be the most useful thing. I first thought Jewel was unattractive when WWSYS came out. I didn't think the video was good at all. Come to think ofit, I didn't think the song was really good either. But, one shitty night after my car accident while in an inebriated/depressed state, I decided to give the POY album a second try and wow, it really was awesome. HOWEVER I didn't think Jewel was any more attractive (judging by her pics in the album leaflet). I was completely hooked on POY though, and eventually, crooked teeth and nose included, I found Jewel to be beautiful. Now, she ranks in my top 3 most attractive women category (with personality, talent, and looks all factored in). It came on right after John Mellenhead's "Key West Intermezzo." The music: I haven't purchased the Batman & Robin soundtrack since I don't care for any of the other music on it, so this was the first time I heard this version, and I don't like it as much as the album version. Not surprisingly, it's been speeded up, made peppier, with back-up vocals added during the chorus, and what sounded like violins or violas instead of a cello for accompaniment. These revisions changed the mood of the song, removing the starkness and solitude of the music that complemented the emotion of the lyrics. Pretty much the same thing they did with YWMFM, although not quite as offensive. The images: Jewel walking around what looked like Joshua Tree National Park (although I didn't really concentrate on the background). Three non-Japanese extras, wearing robes made to look like kimonos, done up in whiteface doing a stereotypical hands clasped together in front of their faces thing (like praying). My guess is that they were like the chorus in a Greek play, who used to observe and comment on the actions going on about them. But I have to stretch to get there, and then it makes very little sense to make them up like geishas. Actually, there was very little sense in their presence at all. Another major image in the video was the body double, dancing with Jewel as if she were in a mirror. To me, this was the only creative scene in the video. Done pretty well, except that the faded out coloring of the video dimished the contrast between the two Jewels, one wearing white and the other wearing black. Horses were big in this video, reminiscent of early 80's videos that had horses and other animals running around in them for no reason whatsoever (remember the Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams"?). The best part of the video, IMO, was a cut of Jewel on horseback, except it was only for a second or two, and was taken from the back, so we couldn't see her face. My review of the video: C-. There was SOOO much they could have done with this video to make it as moving, appealing, unforgettable as the song, but they didn't even come close. Jewel looked allright, except that she was completely made up; in some scenes, her face looks like it's covered with metallic blue powder, it may have been the lighting, but she no longer looked like the elegantly beautiful person I used to enjoy watching. Side point: how many people think that Jewel is becoming over-promoted? It seems she is appearing in every magazine, on every channel, all over the place. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy that she is successful, and that she's getting to live her dream, but, as my friend in DC told me last night, the radio stations up there are calling her a media maven. Could this be partly due to her age, or her innocence, that she doesn't realize this is happening? Or maybe I'm more sensitive to her appearances than others, as I actively look for them, although I'm starting not to care anymore... Bruce Springsteen graced the covers of both Time and Newsweek. What made it special was that it was on the same day, October 27, 1975. At the time, he was still relatively unknown despite having released 3 albums and just releasing his fourth , Born to Run. A few questions come up regarding Jewel on the cover of Time. Why? She has only one CD and not a body of work. We know she has a lot more to offer, but the general public does not. This all may backfire on Jewel. Sean Hooks may be the best person to give us his spin on that. If the article is supposed to be "Time" sensitive and it relates to Lilith Fair, then having only Jewel on the cover is grossly unfair to the other artists. The thing to watch next are the letters to the editor in next weeks issue of Time. Our reaction is to often bias and selfish. Lets see what other people think. Another good place to watch are the used CD bins in your local record stores. As soon as you start seeing a lot of people trading in her CD, it will be a sign that all this hype and publicity has tired the general music buying public. We represent only about 1700 of the 5,000,000 CDs sold. No wonder so many of us are starting to listen to Tara MacLean. We want more music from Jewel and if we don't get it, we'll get look to other artists that are delivering music in a similar style. We don't want pictures and more stories about her sleeping in a van. Give us new CDs. Just one new release is not enough. It will be too little too late. The vinyl release is still more added insult. Wow, another dust collector instead of more music. An interim release of STL on CD would have been a better idea. Better yet would have been JewelStock as an official release. The story doesn't break new ground that hasn't been touched by the dozens of other major magazines that recently covered her. All we are getting is unworthy hype and a couple of nice pictures to add to our collections. She's running out of choices. No more singles after Foolish Games. As her popularity is increasing, it will soon take a turn the other direction. She's at her peak now. There's only one place to go when you're at the peak of a mountain. She's running out of TV shows to appear on, she's already made her fair share of multiple appearances on several shows...both daytime and night. So what does all this mean? After Lilith Fair is over, and after Foolish Games runs it's course, give all this about 2 months to happen, Jewel will once again be what many would like her to be...we all know what that is. How she was about a year ago. As more things continue to happen, her options lessen. What are the chances of a 2nd Time cover? About zero. Another Rolling Stone Cover...slim. Or it'll be over a year from now. Any others? Maybe, but not till the new album is out and only if it does well. So all this media hype is only temporary. I think she's simply enduring it all now, cause she even knows it won't last forever. There's nothing wrong with that. I know alot of EDA's don't like all her extreme popularity now (including myself), but be optimistic and realize that in a couple more months, this will all be history. At least we'll all have another year where she'll no longer be gracing the covers of so many magazines, and appearing on so many TV shows. Until the next album. Then it might pick up again. It's a cycle. That's show business. Cycles. It's nothing new...only that now, it's happening to Jewel. I'm happy for her, for nothing lasts forever and she deserves all this...we all know how hard she's worked too. I'm sure she knows nothing lasts forever as well. She's enjoying this time in her life as much as she can. There's nothing wrong with that. But for those that can't stand this extent of media hype, just hang in there, give it a couple months. Kurt Cobain was on the cover in April or May of 1994, right after he died...The people at Time knew that kurt was #1 in the news at this time, and that he would sell many copies. And he did/ Just for the record, my opinion is that Jewel is on the cover of Time not because she totally dezerves it, but because Time wanted to sell *lots* of issues and thus make lots of money...I love Jewel, but you're right in that she doesn't deserve to be on the cover by herself any more than Tracy, Suzanne, Sarah, etc...It's just that out of all these artists, Jewel is the most currently popular and mainstream and is selling the most records... Mr. BB asked Who was the last musician on the cover of Time ? Well, in Canada it was Sarah McLachlan, who is on the cover THIS week of the Canadian version of Time, instead of Jewel! I love my country in general, but man! I HATE when they do that. (We didn't get Bruce Springsteen on the simultaneous covers of Time and Newsweek in 1975 either!) The article inside is on the Lilith Fair, but where I imagine there is a separate article on Jewel in the U.S. version, there is an interview with Sarah. I guess in Canada, the Times they are a changin' after all. Oh well. Have a great day everyone. I agree with whoever said that they didn't like the new version of Foolish Games...When I heard the POY version, it was so stark and beautiful and haunting and yearning...It gave me chills, I remember...Then I heard the new version, and was soooo disappointed...They totally commercialized it...Where did the real song go...?? I can't understand how Jewel or anybody can think that this is a better version than the original... Also, what's with the mising verse...?? The verse they took out was my favorite and I think the most meaningful... *sigh* Sorry to be such a gripe, Dancer ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Jul 1997 14:00:48 -0400 (EDT) From: TMiles1270@aol.com Subject: Jewel in Time Magazine Wow, what a treat getting the mail was today!! :) Opening up the box and finding Time with Jewel on the cover. :) The pic is great - a close-up of her with her tead tilted slightly to the right and a soft hint of a smile on her face. The article (on pg. 66, which accompanies a cover story on the Lilith Fair), starts off discussing Jewel's love of horseback riding, which segues into a little background on her growing-up years. The rest of the article is pretty standard, talking about her years in Alaska and moving to San-Diego to live in her van with her mom, working dead-end jobs, playing at the Innerchange, etc. I thought the article was well-written. The author did a pretty good job of giving a brief, concise history of Jewel and her rise to stardom, although he failed to mention anything about the EDA's in the article. :( Oh well, sibtw. And the pic of Jewel on pg. 66 is a tad bit "sexier" than the one on the cover, she's wearing a spaghetti-strap gold shimmer tank-top with what looks to be brown shorts or jeans. And, of course, she's giving that look that only Jewel can give. :) For those interested, this issue of Time hits the newsstands on July 21. HEART AND MIND MIND : Take heed, poor heart, let go of this hope the agony involved is more than you can cope. I know of the nights when the stars up high remind you of the sparkle you see in her eyes. HEART : Foolish mind, dont try to interfere I know what I feel when she draws near. My beating quickens, my woes are kept at bay at least you could guide me on what to say! MIND: Why should I help? I know what its all about this silly infatuation of yours will never work out. Ill stammer, Ill be silent, for you I will not defend, to hasten the blow of the inevitable end. HEART : Pitiful mind, do you fail to grasp that this feeling of mine will not pass. Every day, the strength of this emotion grows more you know I never felt akin for anyone before. MIND: Albeit thats true, but do you not see the futility of what your illusion to be. The blossom reaches for the blazing sun, but the indifferent daystar across the sky will run. Crying for the sun, yet she brings on the night wilting the flower as it steals the light. HEART : Follow me now, I will not lead you wrong Firm your resolve, remain fast and strong. A single drop does nothing, it can barely dream but combined with others, it forms a raging stream. A single try means nothing, giving up is the easy way out Through perseverance to achieve your dream, thats what its all about! MIND : This obstinacy of yours will prove insane consider carefully the terrible pain. Release her now, to reduce this woe `Tis wiser if you would let her go. HEART : Enough, gentle mind, I hear your thoughts but I cannot do what you think I ought. A terrible pain for her I adorn but an indescribable grief will I feel when shes gone. MIND : Alas, timid heart, your sorrow affects me it muddles me up, cant hear or see. Clear thoughts I throw, reason I shun, Your actions affect mine, for we are one. A jug of wine! To escape from this net, this encounter with pain Id rather forget. HEART : Drink, my friend, let anguish not hold you dear, yet as you lose your consciousness, I remain clear. No balm can relieve me, or begin to affect me much, the only way out is to feel her touch. Your concern is appreciated, you have my gratitude. Sleep well, dear comrade, Id continue my solitude. Dream of heaven, till all your distress is gone Leave me to my thoughts, Id meet you again at dawn. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #564 ***************************
