I see her saying to stop idoling people who are doing things, and do something yourself. It's great to have such a wonderful respect for her and enjoy what she has done, but it would mean so much more to follow her example and get something accomplished yourself. This does not necessarily mean becoming famous writing poetry and music that touches people's souls. That is only the path which she has chosen because this is what she enjoys and obviously she is very talented at this. She's being very humble at telling us all to get a life. ;) Gerrit ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jul 1997 18:31:00 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: The fake JewelJK@aol.com is at it again :( Hi everyone, I thought we had this one licked, but I guess not :\ I've gotten reports of the fake Emails from JewelJK@aol.com starting up again today. They have mostly been in reply to list members who have posted recently. Just wanted to remind you all (and any new folk too) that Jewel is NOT the person writing these emails, nor is anyone in the Jewel management team. It has been confirmed by Jewel's mother Lenedra that Jewel has not and will not be writing any emails to this list or any EDAs. While the address that these emails come from appears to be exactly the address that is listed on the Pieces Of You CD, if you look at the full headers of these emails, you can clearly see are fakes. (The faker is as of now posting from maricopa.edu which is in Phoenix, you'll see maricopa.edu in there somewhere, unless the faker changes his/her home base for emails) Just some humor in this...one of the people who got a fake is one of the EDA pick sellers. The fake Email offered to send her more EDA picks to sell. LOL!!! Jewel doesn't even have HER EDA picks yet.....Mandy still has them! Another EDA had the fake Jewel offer to send him tapes of any Jewel song. AN OPEN MESSAGE TO THE FAKE JEWEL!!: Hey, can you get me an advance copy of the new CD of Jewel's, Fritz Creek Store??? Part 1 Well, here goes my attempt at the first leg of what is sure to be many posts regarding Oceanfest97. I have much to say, as I always do, and unlike others who attended, my participation is still occuring. (Phil is still here. So is Farr, I think...). Let me begin by first thanking all of you that attended, especially considering the late notification and the disarray of this event! I thoroughly enjoyed everyone's company, and was quite pleased at the substance that this group had to offer! Although I can detail parts of the memories that I will forever hold dear to my heart, there will be many more that will not be mentioned. So...this adventure began with picking up one of the angels that truly touched my soul: Farr. John-Eric was gracious enough to fly Farr here all the way from Oklahoma! We were all gabbing so much, we got to the car and realized, duh, that we had forgotton Farr's luggage! The laughs began there! Then, after reminding Farr what the ocean looked like, we ventured out on wheels (rollerblades for the guys, skateboard for the chic). I must say that John-Eric makes Oksana Baiul look like an amateur! Farr then treated us to Jack-in-the-Yak which we ate at Java Joe's while watching Loam...totally GREAT band! Then, Farr and I walked on the beach and got our feet wet in the warm Pacific Ocean, which is always good for the soul. Anyway...rambling on...(skipping info). Farr is totally awesome, and has a good heart. Let's see...Wednesday...hmm..let's just say I was totally buggin and scared John-Eric and Farr enough for them to depart to L.A.! hehe, kidding, they went to see Lilith Fair in Irvine...ask them for details. Thursday: Surfed to cleanse my spirits...and then headed to the airport to pick up Phil (not the T-shirt guy) who came all the way from CanEDA! We hopped in my convertible and headed to L.A., singing loudly, yelling at people on the highway, and having a blast...to see Tara MacLean! We met up with JE, Farr, Kris Kane, Larry, and Karen. Totally had a blast chatting, goofing off, and taking pictures and being video taped by Kris Kane (we're gonna be famous!). Met Tara, who was a complete doll! (Adding this to make Farr jealous....she rubbeed my arm and touched my face so that she could get some of my body glitter, for hers had rubbed off!) Let's see...that was that pretty much. We boogied back down to OB. Friday: Phil and I picked up my biggest fan: my goddaugher Chrysten (remember that name, SHE WILL BE FAMOUS!) and headed out to the Boardwalk in Pacific Beach (where Jewel used to live) and I skateboarded while Chrysten rollerskated and Phil ran! LOL! That night, we headed to Java Joe's to meet up with James...you know, the hottie that we did the Bagelbash fundraiser for...JPK, and Igor and Eric Garske showed up too! Let's just say....this is where the real fun began.... Stay tuned! Part Two of the Oceanfest97 Adventure coming to a email address near you! I drove 340 miles in five hours to make it to Santa Monica at 'round 12:40pm. I met groggy yet still beautiful Rebecca, waking her up from her breif nap (oh what fun while waiting! ehhe). Even though we were both way too tired to be up at that time, we hung out for a while and got to know eachother a little better. =) I really wish I would have been able to see her for a bit more on Saturday, but instead I opted to trek down to OceanFest due to time constraints. Since I had no where to stay as I kept all of my friends in the dark 'bout me coming down (they'd kill me! Cuz they wouldn't be able to see me.. eheh), I decided to drive straight from Santa Monica to San Diego. After arriving at the beach with awesome directions from Man-D, I proceded to crash on the beach waiting for a few hours for anyone to show up. I was hanging out with my Blue Muffin hat when a group of people walked by and then one pointed, asking if I was Gerrit. I was pretty sure, so I responded affirmatively and we went from there. I won't bother going into detail about everything.. as then you would have to kill me.. so let me throw in some highlights. =) - Lora & Nat showed me where I could get some shorts (since I left mine at home cuz I was confused as to when this was until the day before) and we ended up having lunch after they showed me all the cool stuff down there including Java Joes and a few really cool stores. I even got another silly bumper sticker fer my car. =) - Mary was the ONLY one that even had an EDA Shirt. I don't think she had it on when she got there (could be wrong), but she was gracious enough to wear it so that if anyone walked by and saw all of us they MIGHT notice it. ;> (Considering supposedly "everyone" was going to, eheh) Hell.. I don't even have mine yet! :( - Tom & Nancy showed up along with their lovely daughters both interested in poking themselves in the flesh with metal. ;) - Lora & Nat were fun to play 'round with on the beach! =) - At Java Joe's I was introduced to a few more people and promised Cindy I would try and get to a show on the Living Room Tour if I could. I'd REALLY love to go. I hope I can make one. :) - Java Joe's was a great place to hang out and converse 'bout various things.. throwing ideas back and forth while reminiscing. :) A lot of us hung out there while others got some business done. I enjoyed being able to sit in the shade in a cool atmosphere and talk to Larry, Man-D, Farr, and anyone else who felt like it. =) - We saw Randi play at Java Joes. Shoot me, but I can't quite remember her last name. Like Driscoll or something. Anyway, she was spectacular, as was her guitar player. Larry let me borrow some $$ short-term so I could get her CD. She was happy to sign it and commented on my silly hat. :) - Igor showed up at Java Joes, making some people very happy to finally see him. It's been a while dagnabit! - Man-D is wonderful and was fun to hang out with all weekend! =) After seeing Randi play, Man-D, Phil, and I took off to the local bar and had a lot of fun. I *gasp* had some shots and we even danced 'round. Mandy got the idea that it would be fun for Phil and I to lift her up while bouncing around. She went so high up that she almost hit stuff hanging from the ceiling!! Damn she was having fun. :> Oh yeah, so were we! =) - On Sunday afternoon, Man-D, Phil, Lora, Nat, and I all had a blast driving 'round, hooting at hotties, eating at the expensive but tasty Rusty Pelican, flirting with the waiter, checking out thrift shops, getting yelled at by grumpy women, and havin an all 'round blast together. =) - Farr rode back with me to Santa Monica so I was happy to have someone cool to talk to on the way back.. at least part of the way. :) - The EDAs rule!! I try and make it to every EDA gathering I can. - I loved Ocean Beach!!!!!!!!!!! I'm actually considering moving there in the next few years after I pay off all of my school debts so I can start my own Software Company. :) See you all at the next one! =) Talk to many of you much sooner! :) Gerrit ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jul 1997 18:56:17 -0400 (EDT) From: CornflkGl@aol.com Subject: NJC : Adopt A Newbie, etc... Hi, guys :) I just got home from my two week vacation in Florida to find out that the modem in my "new" ( well, newish ) computer isn't working. Apparently, my brother was online during a thunderstorm. The power went out, and when it came back on, the modem decided it refuses to believe it's connected to a phone line anymore. I've hooked up different cables, blown in the little connector holes, etc... nothing. SO.... I'm talking to you all right now from my old Macintosh LC with AOL 2.1 . If any of you were online and actually USED 2.1 let me tell you.... it's very scary. I miss my buddy lists. ANYWAY, the point here is that I use the filing cabinets on 3.0 to do my Adopt A Newbie stuff, which aren't available on 2.1 . Hence, well.... let's just say it might be a while until I can do some hooking up. At this point I can't access any of the parents surveys, and I have about 25 newbies sitting in my mailbox that I can't really do anything about. I apologizer to all you newbies, and I want to say that please try to somehow find your way around the list without AAN... I suggest Mike's list etiquette page as a great place to learn everything you need to know. At this point, I don't even have a web brower. This COMPLETELY sucks :(. So, like, the band totally flaked on Java Joe...and my goddaughter got her big break! This vivacious little 7 year-old, accompanied only by a $.99 xylophone, played her first venue: Java Joes! What an angel! She even signed autographs! James was quite impressed, and has proclaimed himself president of the Chrysten McNiel Fan Club! So, while Igor talked James' ear off (WOW, Imagine that!). Then, in the midst of all this talent, I see walking in the door a chic that is so damn cute that I almost wanted to dive into "caddy female" mode: Leif was here! She had Vinnie (who has to be the funniest dude I have met in a longtime) and Jimmy with her. Um, like, hello, Jimmy, you talk WAY too much! Hugs all around! Of course, after an exhausting trip they had all made, they were completely wiped out, but totally tried their best to be lively! I floated around and answered the stress-filled phonecall from Mary who was completely lost, yet so near to us! (*ADVICE: NEVER let Mary be your navigator! Not even on a rollercoaster, she WILL get you lost.*) Let's see...after James snuck a kiss (pervert) from me...the rest of us waddled down to my HUGE, SPACIOUS, BEACHFRONT (almost) MANSION! (I totally warned you guys...it's small, tiny, miniscule...hey, it's just me and a cat, and I'm only 4 foot 11!! oh...and my Kato Kalin John-Eric). Anyway, we piled in, of course in a single file line, and waited for Igor and Eric to bring beer over that nobody drank. (*WARNING: When Igor is around, don't expect to practice any vocal skills yourself! At least he talks about interesting things!*) (I LOVE YOU IGOR!) So, we finally kicked Igor and Eric out at 2:30 or so. We then fought over wings of the house that we wanted to occupy. (My servants, chef, and personal trainer were put out that they had to give up their quarters!) So, we gabbed, and then crashed! (umm...like, hello, I slept on my floor, where the coffee table once sat, with my goddaughter and Phil. Vinnie and Leif were in my room, and Jimmy and Mary each took a couch! Who knows where my cat was?) And we slept... OK FOLKS...PART THREE...THE SEQUEL...COMING SOON The actual Oceanfest Footage coming next! So, like, umm, hello, Crazy Lora's mom gave me lame directions (that's ok, I love seeing cows in California) and I was running late for my own event! I finally find my way to Crazy Lora's house...and two rugrats were sitting pathetically on the curb like two cheerleaders that missed the bus to the big game! Can I just tell you guys, you just KNOW that you are about to embark on a fun-filled adventure as soon as you lay eyes on these two! Natalie and Lora, you guys remind me of my best friend in Oceanside, Kelly! Trust me, enjoy all the great times you share together now, because you are truly friends forever, which is a blessing, and continues to be more of an important blessing as you get older! So, here we are...three wild and crazy gals, in a red convertible, FLYING down a highway that I have never been on. (Um, like where were the hot guys?) So, we get to OB (thank God, I almost went through withdrawl from being away from the water that long!) We trapse out to the sand after picking up my surfboard...and see a crowd, that just had to be the group. So, here's a guy, on the beach, in PANTS and a black shirt, and the coolest blue velvet hat I have ever seen; I knew he had to be an EDA! GERRIT!!! So, Gerrit kidnapped the dynamic duo to go on a scavenger hunt for shorts...we knew there was trouble brewing...better him than us! Then, I look over and see this family that are totally playing together, and laughing together....and was approaced by CJ! CJ has the coolest mom, that totally supports her kids interests, like buying the million magazines with Jewel in them so that CJ can continue his awesome scrapbook, and his sisters were beautiful and full of life! I must say, I was quite envious of how close they all obviously are...(I miss my mommy!) (Thanks to CJ's mom for giving me melted oreos!) Then, after Leif, Vinnie, Jimmy, and Mary came back from lunch, and Crazy Lora and Natalie untied Gerrit and brought him back to us (sorry you guys never got your ransom), more people trickled in and we goofed on the beach. John-Eric and Farr finally showed up (guess they were busy signing autographs and stuff...you know what Los Angeles can do to you!). And as I was biting my nails, nervously watching JE and Farr ATTEMPT to paddle out (kooks) (hey guys, when you paddle, the object is to go somewhere...not stay in one place!), and praying that my boards, my kinda Okie, and my Kato would safely return to me, I see coming towards me 3/4 of my favorite family unit (hell, favorite people in general) on the list: Tom, Nancy, and Chelsea Morales! I LOVE YOU GUYS! I was like, hello! Like, where is like, Kaili?! No fret...she was there! YEAH! So, Kris Kane showed up with Elizabeth Hummel and taped more footage for Kris' amazing project including JE and Farr and others singing Jewel songs...(why didn't you yoddle JE? Seriously, he is REALLY good you guys! If you come to my house any morning, you too can experience the free concert John-Eric gives in the shower every morning!) Anway, I left with Kris to do my interview...and by that time it was time to depart to Java Joes! (Damn, I talk alot...) PART FOUR...SWEAR THE LAST ONE...COMING SOON.... Freddie Mercury is probably one of the greatest musicians in terms of the range that his voice could carry. Beefjerky is right in the respect that they are quite good. As you can tell below in my sig, I do like Queen. They were well known for their impressive concerts throughout the world. If i could have just heard them once live and in person , It would have made my day. Th experience from what I understand waws out of this world. The only problem with that today is that Freddie is dead. His voice is what carries a lot of weight for several of us here. Okay enough about the lead singer, and more about their songs. If you like motivation, listen to probably the most motivating sports anthem there is, "We Will Rock You", directly followed by "We are the Champions and you will understand the great music that they can sing. For those of you whp watch Highlander the series or have seen the movies of the same name, their album "A Kind Of Magic is basically the soundtrack to it. Now everyone knows Bohemian Rhapsody, but how many remember Another one Bites the Dust. Or Sheer Heart Attack. Under Pressure, Hammer to Fall, One Year of Love( the only time that Queen ever did a live showing on TV for SNL) and so forth. I haven't even named a tenth of their songs. Their repertoire covers the range from operatic in nature(BR) to hard core rock(OV, WWRY, WATC) that it is unbelievable that they actually existed. But I have gone on enough about them, if anyone has anything else to add feel free to. Also if you have not heard their two albums, Classic Queen and Queen's Greatest Hits, then you are missing an awesome part of music history. So, if you are ever so slightly confused about this, then please read this. If you still don't understand something AFTER reading this then feel free to e-mail me with question, but please do not mail the list anymore about this! Just in case you're wondering, I'm 17. First came records, invented by Edison which came to be known as VINYL. It is a 12" or 7" round object that is usually black in color. It has grooves that are wavy. You put one of these on a Record Player (AKA phonograph) which spins the disc. It spins 12" discs at either 33 and 1/3 rpm (revolutions (spins) per minute) or 78 rpm. It spins the 7" discs at 45 rpm. Then you put the needle on the record, which is attached to an arm. When the needle moves along the grooves, the waves in it vibrate the needle, which is then amplified and sent to your stereo and you hear music. A record only holds about 30 minutes per side. This is what Jewel will be re-releasing POY on. Then came 8-tracks. They contain magnetic tape, which you would simply put into an 8-track player. They came to be because folks wanted something they could record on, though they didn't sound nearly as good as records. Then came cassette tapes. I'm not even gonna explain this, except that they came out because they had much better quality than 8-tracks. If you do not know what a cassette tape is e-mail me with FLAME ME as the subject :) Then came CD's, which most everyone has now. I will go into minor details about how they work, because some people may be interested. When the CD is recorded pits are put into the surface of the CD. When you put one in your CD player a laser beam shines at it and the pits in the CD reflect it in different ways which the CD player interprets and the converts it from digital to analog so you can listen to it. They can hold 74 minutes of digital audio, or 650 megs of data, or a combination of them. Now, they have DVD. They look like a CD. That's about as much as they have in common. Especially the price! (hehehehe)...For one they hold a lot more. They can do that by: 1)the pits are smaller and closer together 2)they can have multiple layers/sides A single layer/single sided DVD can hold 4.7 gigabytes of data, or 133 minutes of high quality movies with multiple languages, surround sound, multiple picture sizes (wide screen (for real new, real expensive tv's), standard, and letterbox), and multiple camera angles. Part IV LAST ONE! I know, I know...shut up Man-D! So, I had to take my beautiful, talented goddaughter to my house so her mother could have her back...and this turned into a private Hanson concert! Yes, I said HANSON! (DISCLAIMER: I do NOT own the Hanson CD! It was my Goddaughter's) So, here on my couch we had the Hanson look alikes, who, by the way, knew all the words to MMMBop! Kaili, Chrysten, and Natalie, with backup vocals provided by Crazy Lora (Tapes will be treed at a later date)! And they scared all my hottie surfer dudes that live downstairs so I will be dateless for a while, thanks guys! Oh, speaking of that...um, Farr, we like missed our wedding. =) So, we all head to Java Joes...and got there AFTER the interview was over! Larry was there with Karen (Karen, you are awesome, always a pleasure seeing you!) Let's see...after a mix up with going to Starbucks to visit John-Eric, half of the gang made it, half didn't. Dropped Crazy Lora and Diva Natalie off at Java Joes (HA HA, you guys are too young to drink!), Phil and I went to Foggy's Notion, my favorite bar, so that I could see some friends that I had been neglecting. We stayed for a bit, and then came back to Joe's to give the angels a key to my ESTATE, and kidnapped the oh-so-reluctant Gerrit and took him back to the bar and made him buy us drinks! THANKS GERRIT! Well, let me just say, the Village People better watch out, because Phil, Man-D, and Gerrit are the next big hit! We put on quite a show on the dance floor where these two almost threw me so high in the air I could have hit my head on the ceiling, and were incredibly obnoxious (GO US!)! So, after being scouted by the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, we signed autographs and departed for home (don't worry, we were safe to drive)! So, everyone was nicely tucked away when we got home, after a short detour to Stevo's house, and Phil kicked some people out of the way to make room to sleep...and um, Gerrit asked if he could sleep on the cold, concrete porch! Sure, whatever dude! Then, I realized, looking at all the open space in my MAISON GRANDE, that um, like, there was one small problem...I HAD NOWHERE TO SLEEP! So, I headed downstairs to the hottie surfer neighbors house and tapped on the door...PWWEEEASSE LET ME IN MARK...MY HOUSE HAS BEEN INVADED BY ANGELS! So, ha ha to everyone, I got to sleep on a Queen Size fouton (alone). Thank you Mark! (even though you are not on the list) So, here we are the next morning... POST FIVE COMING SOON>>>>JOKES, THEM JUST JOKES! READ ON... To simply conserve space, and because I couldn't possibly find the words to describe how much fun Phil, Gerrit, Crazy Lora, Diva Natalie, and I had on Sunday, I will condense here! We had brunch at Rusty Pelican (THANK YOU GERRIT) with the dingy Hostess (see Natalie for the real audio impression) and the HOT server, Harry (LOVE LOVE LOVED Harry!)...then we went thrift store shopping, and got nagged by some rude lady for messing up her racks "please go to Godwill if you want to play" and so we did! HA! I scored a red scarf so I could do my Marilyn Monroe impressions in my convertible and two slip dresses that I am hoping Nancy Morales will fix up for me, and Crazy Lora got some RAD socks! Then, we made it back to OB! Got fake eyelashes, as if I need more makeup on my face, and then said bye bye to Gerrit and Farr. (Bye the way, Gerrit, I should have ran away with you while I had the chance!) And then we drove Crazy Lora and Diva Natalie back to BFE! (oh, Lora, tell your granny me and my cat will be moving in Friday). So, I reluctantly dropped these two spirited angels off (can I adopt you two? and Kaili and Chelsea too?) And Phil is still here...and we are continuing our adventure. Oh, and for those of you wondering what happened to IGOR...hmmm...good question! So, that ends the main part of Oceanfest 97! Sorry to bore you all with the details, but I had a blast. I am only sorry that my place wasn't the lap of luxury and that the organization was lacking! Wait until I am on the Supreme Court...and have my beach house at Windansea Beach! I hope we can all do it again! Oh, and for those of you that showed up, please forward me your T-shirt size, and addresses, I have a present for all of you! Thanks for making this a memorable event! Thanks for all the help and laughs! Pleasure to meet all of you! I am sure I will take a piece of all of you with me forever! I LOVE YOU GUYS!!!!! While it presents some more information I didn't know (like celery juice and lemon... hmm...), it was less informative than the Rolling Stone article. The interview in the Andy Warhol's Interview mag was also quite nice. For those in North Jersey, the Borders' Book Shop at the Bridgewater Commons has many issues of both Time and Interview. All for now.
