Actually, it's a DVD (Digital Vinyl Disc) not a "cd", though they are the same size and shape. You've probably seen the hype surrounding them. %) > And also, can it play on a regular cd player? Unfortunately, no. You need one of those new-fangled $500 DVD players you see being advertised... > Thanks for listening to my > stupid questions which I'm sure everyone knows but me Shucks.... I can't go through with it. 8) Years ago, there were "record" stores which sold music held on large, round 2-sided vinyl platters into which a groove (or grooves in some instances) with lots of bumps had been pressed. When the vibration created from a "needle" being dragged over these bumps was amplified, music could be heard. So, no, they don't play on regular cd players. ;) - ----- In related news: Word travels fast, apparently. Was in a record store a few hours ago and just happened to overhear (one end of) a phone call: "Jewel on vinyl? No we don't have any, sorry." then to a fellow employee: "That's the second call I've gotten today" So I informed him that it wasn't out yet. "New album?" So I relayed the details. something to the effect of: "Milking that for all its worth." And I concurred. I'm still unsure if I'll be picking it up. Vowed some time ago not to spend another penny on singles (at least those with inferior remixes and no b-sides)/t-shirts/tour books/etc. until the new album is released. Blame it on an overwhelming feeling of being marketed to/used. I'll probably wind up breaking down, though. ;) bob ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Jul 1997 12:33:10 +0000 From: tom morales Subject: Re: Have you gotten your EDA brainwashing today? ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? She is truly one angel everyone should not miss out on, and she is going to get big, very soon. I met her at Wendy' Open Mic a couple of weeks ago and heard her sing. Needless to say, I got her album from her immediately! =) Joy has a voice and a personality of an angel. Her musical style is that of late 1940s jazz like Cole Porter, kind of the same sound as the "Too Darn Hot" cover that Jewel does, but much better and more naturally angelic. Her talent is a breath of fresh air to the music scene today. Joy, herself, is a breath of fresh air in society today. She is one of the nicest, most genuine angels you will ever meet. =) Everyone, do yourself a favor and buy her album! She might be doing a living room tour of her own very shortly so let's see if we can get some angels enthused about her so she has living rooms to play in!!!! =) album: Angel Town bin #: 6700-40501-2 Peace and inner health. Milking it for all it's worth: agreed. I kind of supported the decision at first...but I must say even though I'm glad Jewel is making lots of money now, I'm even getting tired of this dwelling on POY. It doesn't even represent what she is doing now. It has become less about the music and all about a calculated marketing campain to squeeze every possible cent out of this album before releasing the new stuff. By then the new will be old. I don't mind this approach with most artists because they just don't write great stuff at the speed Jewel does, but she's so prolific it seems a shame so much of her great material will never be commercially available. It means, don't be an asshole. There is a difference between having an opinion and being obnoxious about it, between maturely stating something and rudely attacking. There is no need to take out your insecurity and fear on someone else. There is never any excuse to insult or hurt. But yes, we all do it, and I know I'm not exempt. I agree that life can't be all sunshine, lollipops and rainbows. Life has its darkness. But the darkness is good too. But the negative energy to which Mark alludes is that which seeks spitefully to bring another down. There is NEVER any need to do that. And I'm not talking about keeping your mouth shut about abuse or addiction, because that is not acting in love either. Love sees the highest in every person, and wants the best for them. Yes, I know "what's best" can get iffy. But generally, we all know what it is. We all get angry. But remember that it's not the person's pault that you are angry. It is the circumstances fault at most, or at least the fault of your own perceptions. The mature person, the true Angel recognizes the good in the other and responds lovingly. I'll give an example so I don't get flamed. If someone does something that encroaches upon my personal boundaries (that is, violates me, emotionally, physically, etc.), the angelic thing to do is not get riled up but to love the other person, while calmly telling them how you feel and asking them to behave differently. Nobody's perfect. But that doesn't mean we have to act as badly as we can to prove it. Bless and Be Blessed; spread the Love! The point of my post is to clear up what a "vinyl" is, what a "vinyl cd" is, and what "DVD" is. I can only assume those of you referring to a vinyl cd, are actually refering to vinyl. As someone who owns the CD, vinyl, and DVD format I think I can speak from a position on knowdgle. The CD format is a music only format that many of you younger EDA know as the only format for music. It's 5 inches round and made of a hard plastic shell. You play it on your Compact Disk player. It been around sense about 86-87. The record/vinyl format is a music only format. It's 12 inches round and made of a soft plastic material generally. You play them on a record player, that believe it or not are still made. Finally the DVD format is a new format. It has been on the market for about six months. At this point it is a video/audio format only. Only movies/music video movies have been released. A future audio only DVD will apear also. DVD stands for Digital Versitle Disk. At one time it was going to stand for Digital Video Disk, but they changed it. As now can't reveal the mystery of tomorrow Bug in passing will grow older everyday Just as all is born is new Do know what I say is true That I'll be loving you always Until the rainbow burns the stars out in the sky Always Until the ocean covers every mountain high Always Untill the dolphin flies and parrots live at sea Always Until we dream of life and life becomes a dream Did you know that true love asks for nothing Her acceptance is the way we pay Did you know that life has given love a guarentee To last through forever and another day Just as time knew to move on since the beginning And the seasons know exactly when to change Just as kindness knows no shame Know that through all your joy and pain That I'll be loving you always As today I know I'm living but tomorrow Could make me the past but that I mustn't fear For I'll know deep in my mind The love of me I've left behind Cause I'll be love you always Until the day is night and night becomes the day Always Until the trees and sea just up and fly away Always Until the day that 8x8x8 is 4 Always Until the day that is the day that are no more Did you know you were loved by someone? Until the day the earth starts starts turning right to left Always Until the earth just for the sun denies itself I'll be loving you forever Untill dear Mother Nature says her work is through Always Unill the day that you are me and I am you Always We all know sometimes life hates and troubles Can make you wish you were born in another time and space But you can bet your life times that and twice it's double That God knew exactly where he wanted you to be placed So make sure when you say you're in it but not of it You're not helping to make this earth a place sometimes called Hell Change your words into thruths and then change that truth into love And maybe our children's grandchildren And their great-great grandchildren will tell I'll be loving you always. thanks :) Jen :) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Jul 1997 18:25:03 -0400 (EDT) From: Rambler18@aol.com Subject: save the linoleum hello all, i am looking for save the linoleum or any other smaller projects that jewel has put out. if someone can help me then please reply. also if there are any performances of jewel on video and if so wher you can find them. one more thing ....when is jewel going to be in california....i missed the lilith fair but i am just waiting for when she will be down in southern california.PLEEEEESE reply!!!! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Jul 1997 14:47:54 -0700 From: Tim S Subject: NJC:Hard Rock Live -Blues Travler... My friends kindly backed out on me after asking me to buy the tickets, so might as well sit with some EDAs for the show! The seats are in Section 5, and are $40 each (including the Next surcharge). This show is completely sold out now, not even lawn seats are available. If you're interested, drop me an e-mail. That's Digital VIDEO Disc, or in the computer field Digital > VERSATILE Disc. Where did this screwy vinyl CD thing come from > anyway? Sigh. I hope at least somebody was able to tell that was in jest. Thought the "Shucks... I can't go through with it" made it pretty clear that the first part was tongue-in-cheek. The history of the "V" in DVD just presented too great an opportunity not to stick "vinyl" in there. Perhaps I should have made the first part more outrageous, or thrown a "That's the vinyl they're talking about" after the second part, but I didn't think anybody could possibly even for a second believe that vinyl could be used in a laser-based mechanism. I don't know what the reflectivity of vinyl is, but I suspect it is _CONSIDERABLY_ lower than the (occasionally troublesome) 65% or so that CD-R's have, much less the reflectivity aluminum (or gold) of a true pressed CD (or DVD). ;) Further (and admittedly less obvious to those who haven't been following things), don't be looking for audio DVD's any time soon. As of a month or so ago, they were still bickering over formats (higher sampling rates vs. higher resolution vs. extended playing time) and copy protection methods. Personally, I think it will be a crime if they don't allow multiple standards. Require a bit more smarts in the players, but at $500 (though that will drop...), I expect quite a bit from a machine. This is completely not true. Any and all of you are welcome to attend this event. It's only 5 days away though, so if you plan to attend speak now or forever hold your peace :-) Rsvp to BRSVL97@aol.com if you would like to come or with any questions you might have about the event :-) Lovies, Tammy :-) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Jul 1997 14:12:00 -0700 From: "Adrian du Plessis" Subject: Re: Have you gotten your EDA brainwashing today? The abstract becomes more concrete as people discuss things openly. Recent discussion over the appearance of scammers and those with a manipulative, controlling, approach serves as a useful reminder that there's a need for certain precautions in an on-line community. Albert posted very useful guidelines about how one can order things on-line and not get ripped off. Igor has addressed the cult aspect which is another situation. Regrettably, efforts have been made and continue to be made to attempt to manipulate certain EDAs and even Jewel. That's a fact and it's not going to disappear simply through ignorance or existing in a fantasy. Those that have not encountered this situation are better off. Those that do know what's happening, like Igor and some other, more "veteran", list members have a duty to be honest and open for the good of all. Contrary to what was inferred in the post Igor was responding to said, there are no EDAs cowering from darkness. Fortunately, it's not even an issue of darkness. This list, like other on-line groups, is faced with the fact that there's a small number, and it really is a small number, of individuals who would seek to exploit and take advantage of the good nature of EDAs and others in this world. The problem, bad vibes, or whatever term one uses to describe the situation -- the negativity, say, doesn't come from those who are trying to inform this group or point out the facts, but from the scammers and manipulators. There's an old saying -- and it still holds true -- don't shoot the messenger. Albert, Igor, Mike, Chris and any others who are openly discussing problem situations are doing what I hope any EDA or friend would do. It's giving us all credit to be able to handle the bad as well as the sunny things that crop up. None of these EDAs is a negative person. Once a problem is addressed, life moves on. It's when you pretend that a real problem doesn't exist that things can get out of whack. With such a large number of visitors to this list, I'm really glad that so little crap has occurred to harm EDAs. As a miscrocosm of the larger world, we're lucky. Jewel attracts idealists, but that doesn't mean we needn't be realists as well. There was a line in the Interview article that fits this discussion - -- something about innocence does not mean ignorance. I know he's not the sort to grab the glory for himself, but all EDAs should recognize the tremendous effort and commitment Igor made to raising funds and awareness for James Paul Kalanick, organizing the raffle and, most of all, taking James out to Java Joes and treating him as a person not a disability. Man-D's done that too -- James is one of her many EDA grooms! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Jul 1997 19:58:37 -0400 (EDT) From: Grrly1@aol.com Subject: EDAC:KinneyFest 1 on Saturday, July 12th a few EDAs got together in central park for a concert by an amazing band called "sleater-kinney" i had been a big fan of S-K and had been thinking about going since Chelstock, but i had no one to go with... until Abel offered to go with me... now before i go any further i'll tell you who was there. Me, Abel, Steve messina, Kelly Magee , Pete , Tom , and stephanie , and Russ . okay... now on with the story. After Abel said he'd go we thought... well wouldnt it be cool to have a mini Chelsstock reunion and invite steve, kelly and russ? so we did... kelly wasnt sure. and steve was a definete (heck after that steve and i were on the phone like 3 times a day planning it) okay okay... long story... well SORTA short... about 3 days before the big day i was talkign to tom miles on the Computer and i said Half jokingly "Hey why dont you get down here for this?" (because after all... whats a party without a frat boy?) so he said that he would be there... i was totally blown away by this.. that he was coming all the way from PA for my little tiny gathering. and so to take advantage of teh situation i said why dotn you bring stephanie along with you...and again i had a good idea, because she ended up loving the idea... now you see... NONE of the attendees of this concert/gathering had ever heard of the band... so i of course spend hours on the phone with each of them playing S-K songs for them... almost all of them had great reactions to it.. but my favorite reaction by far was Definetely Steves... i played it for him first... and his reaction was eactly this "Woah... Dude... I'm there!".. it was pretty awesome. and especially since i had expected the EDA reaction to be a bit um... cold to them, since well i havent mentioned it, but they are a Riot grrl Punk band (but one of the best ones out there) and most jewel fans are also strictly or semi-strictly accoust ic, folky fans...well this experience definelty taught me not to underestimate peoples tastes. soo i played some of their songs for everyone... and spent more time on the phone with EDAs in one week than i probably ever will in my lifetime (when my dad sees the bill hes going to flip out... seriously) continued.... ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #554 ***************************
