Anyway, I had the first Jewel dream that I can remember last night. The dream started out with me finding out that the Lilith fair would be playing about an hour away from where I live (which it isn't) so I was really exited. Then I went to some park or something and walked over to this van where Jewel and some guy were talking. They were talking about how either Satellite or 1000 Miles Away should be the next single. They decided on Satellite. So I walked in on this conversation and Jewel was smiling and told me that Satellite was gonna be the next single. So I was like, "hi Jewel." then we started walking around the park and talking about stuff. I wish I could remember it more clearly, because it was a long dream and most of it we were just talking. So Jewel and I got to be really good friends, we were all giggly and having a good time. Then we ran into a bunch of my friends. A couple of them were Jewel fans so they were like "wow, that's Jewel???" then they stole her away for a while so I was walking around and then a bunch of people started playing flag football. so I started playing but then i got bored. So I was wandering around again and I found Jewel hiding. She told me she didn't like my friends. They intimidated her or something like that. So then we were talking a little while longer but she said she had to go so she walked back to the van and drove off. Then the phone rang so I woke up. Man, it was a good dream. I had one about Fiona a week or so ago too. I guess I'm just dreaming about a lot of my favorite singers lately. Oh, about Interview magazine. I picked up a copy of it today. I had been looking for it but could never find it. so I found it today but at first I thought it was the wrong issue cuz the girl on the cover didn't look like Jewel. Did anyone else think this? She looks like a porcelin (sp?) doll to me. Kinda scary. I don't know, porcelin dolls scare me for some reason. But the other pics in it were good. It was an ok article. Typical. Anyway... *hugs* Emily sorry for such a long post... ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Jul 1997 01:13:10 -0400 (EDT) From: GRooVe MoNTHLY Subject: Re: VERY important news about FG Video Premiere! I very much like and approve of the idea that we keep each other informed of possible threats to the community, like scammers and cults, because that's the first step in ultimately stopping the bad guys- or at least convincing them to move onto easier targets. To make a stand, you need to present the bad guys with a formidable defense. Scammers need to learn, as we are seeing, that EDAs can use a lawyer just as well as anyone else. We need to clearly define that the EDA community works for the betterment of the world and to foster hope for everyone, but at the same time, don't forget that we can grow teeth everywhere, too. Hopefully, we can be just like the furry bunny in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. :) Just my thoughts. Anyways, i went to the Irvine Meadows Lilith Fair, on Wednesday July 9th. The show was fabolous, Jewel was great, Tracy Chapman was also great. Well, my story is that I drew a 19x24 color pencil portrait of our angel, Jewel. It's a portrait from the photo in the RollingStones mag. It's her with the red top. Well, I hiked down to the VIP entrance to ask the security people if they could give the portrait to Jewel...they said,"that they were'nt sure if she would get it." As i was trying to think of a way of getting the portrait to Jewel....I saw a girl that had an all access pass which had the name "Jewel" stamped on it. I quickly asked her if she will be seeing Jewel? She nodded, and i went on to ask her if she could give the portrait to Jewel, she looked over to a lady with shades, to get a response. As I glanced over to her it suddenly hit me that she was Lenedra. With much excitement, I asked her if she was Lenedra, she kindly responded,"yes." I went on to nervously introduce myself and foolishly told her how big a fan i was, and told that i was an EDA. She graciously responded, "I know." She asked me if i drew the picture myself and from which magazine the portrait was drawn off of. I nervously said,"yep and Rolling Stones...." I nervously scribbled my all my info including where I was sitting and asked Lenedra if she could ask Jewel to sign it and give it back to me or if she was too busy, she could just keep the protrait. Lenedra accepted the portrait graciously. And I shook her hand to thank you. I felt like I was in heaven hiking back up to the terrace section. I was floating on a cloud. As i sat there basking in the warm sun, pinching myself how i actually met Lenedra and that Jewel was going to get the portrait. Suddenly, about ten minutes after i had given the protrait to Lenedra, the kind young lady and a kind man hiked all the way up to the terrace section in the hot sun.....He held up the portrait and yelled out, "special delivery!" I looked over and shocked out of my shoes....saw my portrait and knew that is had been signed by JEWEL! At awe I stumbled over to accept the portrait and thanked the two with all my heart. Jewel signed it: Brandon Wow! Love blah love, jewel's drawing Jewel I was in heaven again...I was so estactic and happy. I felt like I had been blessed. I can't really put how i felt in words. Oh, one more thing I saw a few EDA's there, however; I was kinda shy, and didn't know how to approach you all, I wasn't wearing an EDA shirt, but I did have on a Jewel shirt. Sorry, I regret not talking to you guys, maybe next time, I can be more open and finally meet all the nice people on this wonderful list. Anyways, I thought I share my fabulous experience with you all....I still can't believe it...maybe next time I would have the honor of meeting Jewel! oh god, I think I would die then....WOW! We got there at about 2:00pm but were deterred by the marquee out front that said it was starting at 4:30, so we stopped to get something to eat. Against the advice of some really nice people i took two 1 liter bottles of water in my back pack and got caught. So i took out the bottle the checker chick had seen and guzzled the whole liter right there in front of her. She let me through with the other one. Boy did i have to go then. After waiting in line for what seemed like 20 hours for the restroom we walked around a little and discovered a girl standing on stage with her guitar. Turns out she was Lauren Hoffman. i was really impressed with her voice and her cute little country song about dirty old men. Next on was Mudgirl. i gave her a try, but it just wasn't my kind of music. Leah Andreone peddled her wares next on the electric stage. Now i've heard lots of good reviews about her music from friends and decided this was a great chance to try her out without that CD investment. i was completely bowled over. She was gorgeous! Incredible stage presence and she really got the crowd hyped. She was a wonderfully beautiful voice that made me think of birds in flight, but she was still able to achieve a gritty edge when needed. After her performance i went straight to the Tower Records booth and bought her CD. (Tower had all the featured artists' CDs on sale, but not Lauren Hoffman :() i wasn't sure who Kinnie Starr was, but then again i'd seen two people perform today that were pretty unknown to me, so i decided to give her a try. i got to the acoustic stage and there was this deep bass thumping music coming out of speakers and someone sing-speaking, but she was no where to be found. i jumped and hopped around a little til i saw this woman vibing in the crowd seated on the grass. Turns out she's not really a singer, she's this bohemian poet. Sadly, though, not alot of people got into her and the crowd thinned, but i thought her style was fresh and her poems honest. i suppose dramatic poetry reading is an acquired taste? My friend wasn't into it so he left to look around and we had plans to meet up for Suzanne Vega. i was pretty disappointed when i realized there was only 5 minutes between Vega and Cassandra Wilson and that Vega was performing 20 miles away at the main stage. So my friend and i split again cause i really wanted to familiarize myself with Cassandra Wilson after all the great things i'd heard about her. Cassandra Wilson was worth the wait! i'll never hear Last Train To Clarksville the same way again. i kinda thought it was more sexy, playful and seductive than sad, somber and serious. Sadly though she didn't play an encore and it was time for Paula Cole. Unfortunately i mostly missed her set while waiting in line for....you guessed it! The potty! Jewel was up next, and boy was i shocked when she came out. i was so far away she just looked like a little speck of bare legs. i'd never seen her wear anything that short before and was surprised. Whens he put her guitar on it was bigger than her hot pants...at least that's what the binoculared people in front of me said she was wearing. i can't exactly put my finger on it, but i wasn't as impressed by her as i was with her performance at the RIMAC. Something seemed missing. Then there was the last verse of SIBTW. i couldn't hold myself back and screamed with gusto, "Flames lick the air!!!!!" That garnered me some strange looks. Ironically, i WAS impressed with her delivery of Foolish Games, a song which i intensely dislike. This was the first time that it ever moved me emotionally. Her band sounded pretty good this go round, 'specially on Love Me Just Leave Me Alone. i was kinda disappointed that she chose to end with YWMFM and WWSYS cause it really felt like she didn't want to sing them. i was also sad she didn't yodel. Her voice was amazing and very clear. It was probably the best i've heard her sound , but there was just something about the whole thing that kinda left me feeling like there wasn't much emotion there outside of FG. The real show stealer in many opinions was Tracy Chapman. i was blown away. She opened with Behind the Wall. The pure power and emotion in her voice was amazing. She did Fast Car with a new, well, new to me, little tempo and that was great. Her rendition of Give Me One Reason was soulful and bluesy, the she repeated the last verse or so in an edgier rockier way and just had the crowd on their feet screaming for more. She came back with an encore of the Revolution song. Finishing up the night was Sarah McLachlan.i'd never heard her before and was happy to get a chance to do so. Well, i'd heard her do a radio interview and a couple of songs on the way there. She was really good. But it was kinda hard for me to get into her without being able to see her. Go figure. Well, that's my Lilith report and if you're still reading this you get a gold star for longevity! patrice ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Jul 1997 00:30:35 EST From: trujillo@netwrx.net Subject: Phoenix Lilith Fair Dear EDAs, Lilith Fair was awesome!!!! OK, to all of you who are up to date on your newspapers and CNN reports, this will probably seem like a waste of email, but as I get no newspaper at my apartment and there is no antenna on my TV, I am pretty secluded from lots of stuff in the "informed" world... as many of you or at least as a good deal of you know, I am really into the NEA, and I just read this little blurb on the web. It saddens me greatly..... * * * * * NEA Future On Line in House - The House of Representatives is set to vote today on the future of federal arts funding. Yesterday conservative Republicans edged closer to their dream of abolishing the National Endowment for the Arts, which they consider a waste of money. On a cliffhanger vote of 217-to-216, lawmakers cleared the way to replace the agency with $80 million in block grants to school districts and state arts councils. The NEA distributes grants directly to artists. If the House rejects the block grants, the bill would simply slash NEA funds and provide no alternative arts support. * * * * * thanks for reading. This angel is very sad that our lawmakers are trying to get rid of the NEA. When will they 'get it'? *sigh* i love you all one of the most incredible contemporary poets I know, Kimiko Hahn (if you want to read her stuff I highly suggest her collection called _The Unbearable HEart_) got funding from the NEA which made the writing of that book possible. Imagine if the NEA was not around...the collections in museums would not be as wonderful as they are, many poets, writers, artists, dancers, singers, actors, et al would not be able to share the beauty of their art with the world, and there would be so much less hope for anything that is an expression of soul...what really matters. Sorry for wasting your email space if you find this a waste. I am just really down now after having readthat little blurb... i love you all so much stephanie Greek Poet Chyck PoetAngel ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Jul 1997 11:10:44 -0500 From: fanofjewel@juno.com (Jessica M Winn) Subject: Re: free jewel article Do you still have them?
