Well, just thought that I single handedly succeded in having the #1 MP3 archive on the internet remove 3 of Jewel's songs that had been digitally converted into MPEG 3 format in their entireties. Penn '97" Subject: NJC: Big girls oh, my fellow EDAs... especially Matt... things were just academic until you mentioned all the loonies out there... my stock in trade is self-protection stuff, and I'm about to eat up a tremendous amount of bandwidth by suggesting that all the folks here, big or little, girls or boys, learn some self-protection skills. Why? Because unlike the EDA community, the world is filled with people who are under pressure from life, have no means of release, and occasionally do snap. Worse, there is a small but significant minority of people who are just plain dangerous. I say small but significant because while these folks are numerically smaller than the regular folks, they have a tremendous negative impact on the lives of folks just like us and their friends & family. What follows, then, is a list of schools that teach good self-protection stuff. If you live near these schools, drop in for a free sample class and see for yourself what it's all about, and why you might need this sort of thing in your life. I will personally vouch for the Boston school, as I think it's the best in the nation for this particular kind of thing. You can find the list here: http://www.algonet.se/~helmet/BUJINKAN/DOJOLIST/index.html It's sad, but it's true- there are people out there who would seek to undo all of the positivism that embodies the EDA community. I for one want to see this whole group grow, prosper, and eventually influence the majority of Americans for the better, so that we can have a hand in building a tomorrow that is worth living for. Unfortunately, with every dream must come conviction, the desire to create that dream, and the ability to deal with those who would seek to only destroy what we make. That's why this whole topic of self-protection strikes very close to home for me. I've thankfully survived several encounters with nasty people who were bent on doing me harm, and I'd like to think that the EDA community can reach its dreams safely. I mean the whole show, including Jewel, was great but she seemed really unprofessional and really didn't fit in with the whole vibe of the show. And she didn't play that well either, I've seen her five times now and this was the worst, but not to say she sucked, she didn't, she was really good, but for Jewel to be absouloutly wonderful, it needs to be a Jewel show, not a Girls night out type thing. On a different note, Tracy Chapman stole the fricken show, she was awesome, even opened up with "Behind The Wall" alone, like Jewel does it (hmmmm I wonder if Jewel copied Tracy), but anyway Sarah was also amazing Paula Cole blew ass but everyone else was cool! I loved the whole evening and highly recomend going if it comes to your town, Jewel or no Jewel, its a wonderful thing when that many women get toghether in celebation of music, and I must add that the whole evening was very puntual! Yeah, well I use a thin for acoustic playing, a medium when I'm going for a thicker sound when I amp or mike my guitar, sometimes I using finger-picks (only sometimes - I prefer my own fingers) and a thick-thick-heavy pick on my junky electric, and also a thick bass pick when I'm playing bass. I suppose this is the dress. I could try to explain her reaction by making a joke about how unbleached cotton might be more appropriate for the organic, holistic ambience of the fair, or perhaps the reviewer has a more vivid imagination than I do, or maybe the sun was in her eyes. I'm surprised I was able to think clearly after such a performance. The one thing I couldn't believe was that I was the only one dancing, everyone esle just stared dumb founded at Jewel. Oh well, we can't save them all. Anyway here is the list, although not in order: Near You Always- this was done first before the band came out Satellite Down Love Me Just Leave Me Alone- some of the lyrics were different YWMFM- Jewel called this a sick song about stalking YWMFM- rock version Foolish Games Angel Standing By- she introduced this by saying she believes in angels Sometimes it be That Way- some the lyrics were different (a song I didn't know) Passing Time- some of the lyrics were different Dancing Barefoot- or something like that, its a Patty Smith Tune. Pretty cool because I was dancing barefoot! WWSYS- the last song she did, with quite a bit of scatting I might add Jewel was wearing tight demin stretch jeans, (they looked like they laced up,) and the shirt she wore at rockfest, her hair was the same to. The only thing she said at the beginning of the show that made me grind my teeth was that Alaskans feel a kinship with Oregan-ans. Who are Ory-an-ans? Us Oregonians are a little touchy about are name, especially when it is never pronounced correctly. Its just like saying Illinoi-s. Oh well, I forgive her. I hope you enjoyed this. Oh, I have the Tracy Chapman set list, again of what I remember after I got back to my seat. Let me know if you want me to post it. It won't be be for a week though because I'm leaving. Tonight's setlist at Irvine Meadows in Irvine CA: solo: Near You Always Deep Water Started the first bar of Little Sister then said her famous, "I'm going to play a 'new' song"...dedicates song to the guy who fired her from her coffee waitressing stint... Sometimes It Be That Way-messed up the last verse...oh well. enter band: Morning Song Been Down So Long Love Me Just Leave Me Alone Dancing Barefoot Foolish Games solo: Just Passing Time "If you guys quit talking it'd be really cool...(applause)" Angel Standing By band returns: Gushes about Tracy Chapman..."biggest fan of Tracy Chapman and it's a honor sharing the same stage..." "Too cute," all the girls say behind me, "so honest." You Were Meant For Me Who Will Save Your Soul Tracy Chapman had one encore performance of "Give Me One Reason." To my knowledge, she's the only one who encored. ( I didn't stay all the way through Sarah's set.) I was hoping Jewel would encore with "Nikos" or "Angel Needs a Ride" but it didn't happen. She played four guitars in all...didn't see type strats she was using...anyone? This is the first time I've seen her use that many guitars probably just to save time from tuning down and back...Ms. Chapman stole the show. Great stuff... Jewel merchandise at show: Tour book: $18; 3 types of T's: $25...bring your Visa/Mastercard...There was no Lilith Fair CD being sold or a program. So, where was everybody? I went to the Borders Pre-Show in Mission Viejo but just didn't want to yell out "Who are EDA's?" To those who didn't go, Leah Andreone played a great 6-7 song set and Suzanne Vega was late but did two songs... Oh..saw, Sharon Stone strolling in... Stanley, I think you're talking about Tara's Troubador show where she's opening for the great Ron Sexsmith ("I know a lot of incredibly talented, senstive male singer-songwriters-guys like Ron Sexsmith-that, if they were women right now, they'd be huge."-Sarah McLachlan in Entertainment Weekly #387).
